So the sandman comic takes place in the actual DC comics superhero universe. So characters like the martian manhunter and swamp thing do crossover with this story. But the series was smart to distance itself from the superhero universe. We even see at one point that the DC comics heroes are products in this universe just like they are in ours.
For instance, in the comics, Dr. D in the diner is the justice league villain dr destiny. Sbut they reimagined him perfect in this series, in a way that ties him to Morpehu’s original captors.
So Dream is one of seven beings called the endless. These beings kind of embody the different aspects of humanity, or all intelligent life. They are destiny, death, dream, desire, despair, and delirium.
Yes, but one of them took off a few hundred years earlier, and I don’t want to spoil anything about them.
Allright, so each of these seven have th eir own realms that they maintain. IN the case of dreams, he is the lord of stories, and the dreams we have when we’re asleep. So if you go someplace in a dream, what you’re actually doing is visiting his metaphysical realm. Every dream or nightmare you have is someone who the dream lord created.
One of these nightmares, the corinthian, leaves the dreaming realm so he can murder humanity at will. He likes the freedom, and feels empowered by preying on human beings.
Before Dream can erase Corinthian, a group of rich old men in England accidentally imprison him for decades. This causes the dreaming to fall apart. In the waking world, people begin to fall asleep for decades. All of this is perhaps a commentary on humanity in the 20th century, and how our reliance on technology has inhibited our ability to see the world through a more fantastical lens.
Dream breaks out of his prison, but is weakened. He spends the season gathering his tools where he placed portions of his power.
During this time, he wins back his helm from hell, embarrassing Lucifer in the process. [you embarrassed me]. Lucifer is played brilliantly by Gwenoldine Christie. You look at her and you really do see this beautiful, perfect warrior from heaven.
She has a plan to get back at Dream-and heaven-that is so perfect and devious, I can’t wait to see it play out in season 2.
Also, most importantly-dream is an a-hole.housnd dog years ago he fell in love with an african princess, and when she rejected him he cursed her to hell-just because she hurt his feelings, and embarrassed him [you embarrassed me in front of her]
After Dream re-acquires his tools, we enter the final arc of the season-where things start to get really confusing.
First let’s talk about the Corinthians. He was created by Drea, to be a nightmare. But nightmares serve a function to help humanity-they expose us to our worst gears, so we can face them [dream saying this]. The problem is, the corinthian stopped living to serve humanity, and wanted to serve only himself.
He breaks away from dream to eat the eyeballs out of random people’s heads. He does this for a few reasons. One, eyes are symbolic of the soul-and the corinthian has no soul. But eyes are also a way to create empathy. To understand someone, we look into their eyes. But, instead of eyes, the corinthian only has teeth. So instead of seeing others, and relating to people with eye contact-he only desires to consume others. He can never connect with a human being on an emotional level-he just wants to consume them.
So Corinthian is also a metaphor of how in today’s society we don't feel empathy for one another-and we’re all just rampaging consumers.
The Corinthian’s goal is to stay alive. He wants to keep dream imprisoned so he’s free to walk the earth. And for the 20th century he quietly killed thousands of people, ensuring an army of serial killers-who call themselves collectors. These are people that the corinthian has infected with his evil. None of these people can feel empathy for their fellow humans-they just want to use and consume other people to make themselves feel complete. Hence the name-collectors.

A question that bothered me from the comics and now carries over here: why did Death herself never try to help Dream while he was imprisoned? I initially thought the ending of the Lucifer vs Dream battle is a bit cheesy, hope defeating anti-life and Lucifer not being able to think of something that can kill hope. After re-watching that scene, I think Lucifer was not able to think anything the can kill hope because Lucifer themselves rely on hope. Lucifer has been described as having an indomitable will. Lucifer really needs that indomitable will and hope. They need their indomitable will to wage war against Heaven and the ability to hope that they can win. If Lucifer countered Dream with something that can kill hope, they're essentially saying that their own ability to hope can be killed. Maybe by not responding, Lucifer is saying that their own ability to hope can't be killed.

A bit disappointed how they introduced Despair in contrast to Desire, but it's understandable they didn't want to get too graphic. The story of the Dream Lord was ahead of its time and was shackled by initially being connected to DC Supes IMO It deserved to be retold in this manner (10 eps vs. a 2.5hr movie) to give the characters better context as the story moves along. Not only does the invention of streaming benefit this content, but the world is more accepting of fluid identities (what I meant by "ahead of its time") = The story was more appreciable due to the fact such diverse representation was incorporated to tell it = great job!

You know, I'm pretty intrigued by your idea that the Vortex was breaking down the walls between the Endless' realms in addition to the barriers between dreamers' minds. Absent Brute and Glob's very particular scheme from the comic, it's a good way of headcanoning how Lyta and Hector can meet in her dreams.
Also, I don't think Desire raped Unity in the show. They seem to have changed things so they more seduce her in dreams and got her pregnant through a consensual relationship much as Hector and Lyta conceived Daniel.

    • @riopato2009
      @riopato2009 Год назад +3

Hey, the mention of Daniel is a spoiler! Viewers don't know yet! I doubt the show will get this far but it's possible. Also the show suggested that Desire seduced Unity in her dreams but that would mean Desire crossed Morpheus's Realm while he was imprisoned, that would've broken the kingdom rule. The books didn't break that rule and Desire raped Unity instead so I can see how Ryan got mixed up between the books and show since he's a fan of the books.

Would also like to recommend here the beautiful audio adaptation of Sandman on Audible. It has a stacked cast headed by James McAvoy as the title character. Can't wait for the next season's story arcs.

Also, the motivation for desire to do what it does is... because desire IS desire. It wants. It doesn't care if it attains what it wants - all desire does is want. Dreams imprisonment allowed desire to infiltrate the dreaming to cause nightmare and dreams to want things beyond their original design. Remember - there isn't necessarily a ultimate goal to desires actions. The actions are the goal themselves.

Maybe worth noting that at least in the comics the "rule" against the Endless spilling family blood isn't one they've imposed upon themselves, merely one that Desire is seeking to take advantage of. I won't go into more detail to respect the need not to spoil comics details, but it does wind up tying back into something else in this season. Uncle Neil rather brilliantly seeded so much of the ultimate story from the very beginning and the show looks to be following suit while remixing certain elements! Beautiful adaptation of a masterpiece (though agreed on Matthew's "pep talk". 😜)!

I read these books when I was a teenager, and now here we are 30 years later and it's all done so beautifully!! I'm really impressed by it. The few changes have been either not important, or for the better. Like how Brute & Glob are made into one being with a better motivation. Or more recently how Calliope was given a more Grecian appearance than was in the comics, and Dream is less cold to her desire to visit him in the Dreaming.
