Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show I'm your host Paul aka the Man of the your dreams...fff...---
Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show I'm your host Paul aka the guy who's videos send you to sleep and this episode we're gonna be breaking down Sandman on Netflix.
This is an absolutely outstanding adaptation of one of the greatest comic books ever written and it proves that sticking to the source material actually works.
Whereas showrunners have recently used shows like Halo and Resident Evil to tell their own stories by stealth, Sandman embraces it's beloved franchise and shows that Neil Gaiman knows best.
A film has been in the works since 1991 and has gone through the ringer with everyone from James Mangold, Eric Kripke and even Joseph Gordon Levitt attached in some way.
The development hell is over though and the plot and ending have a lot to unpack from it. This series adapts the first two arcs, Preludes & Nocturnes as well as The Doll’s House and going off what happens after that we can pretty much predict exactly the way that the show is gonna go. I wanna break it all down but up top I thought I'd talk about comic property and some of the easter eggs. If you wanna skip ahead to see us tackling certain sections in the video then timecodes will be linked below but I also hope that you hit the thumbs up button if you enjoy the video.
    Thanks.
Now incase you didn’t know, The Sandman is part of the supernatural wing of DC along with Hellblazer and The Sandman spin off Lucifer. The original work is filled with nods to Batman, Green Arrow, Etrigan, Mister Miracle, The Justice League and it's awash with DC characters that are sadly removed from this entry.
This is obviosuly due to casting and rights issues and who knows, Discovery could've cancelled the whole series for a laugh if it had been on HBO Max. Lucifer and Constantine...sorry Constantine appear in the show too with their genders swapped so they dont clash too much with the other live action versions out there. Lucifer was originally based on David Bowie but Gwendoline Christie brings her own style too and judging by the ending we'll no doubt be seeing her again very soon.

I really liked John's story. He was just a kid who was truly scared because of the ruby. His dreams and nightmares became true and thus his emotional development was stunted. He had difficulty distinguishing reality from the dream leading him to be impulsive. But the interaction between him and the lady driver enabled him to trust more (albeit in small increments). When Morpheus realised that he had become a killer was due to external factors, he granted him eternal sleep.
Long story short, there is still redemption. Sorry if it is too long.

If I remember correctly, in the comic book he still killed the lady he hitchhiked with, but in the show he has a better moral compass. So I think it makes sense that Dream's punishment for him is also less cruel than in the comic book.

the waitress ripped her book and burned
pages of the story she was writing about the daily life's of the people at the diner her dream was to be a writer and find a guy for herself
the cook cut his hands that he uses for cooking his dream was to have a person of his own to cook for and be with but he was looking in the wrong places and the wrong people to do it with
the wife slits her throat which is really bad in Asian culture she was flawed but her dream was to be perfect
The intern cut of his hand his dream was to be in a important company and be successful but he urges he couldn't control
The husbands dream was to prove his dad wrong and stay with his wife but he kept cheating on her with anyone even men

I initially thought the ending of the Lucifer vs Dream battle is a bit cheesy, hope defeating anti-life and Lucifer not being able to think of something that can kill hope. After rewatching that scene, I think Lucifer was not able to think anything the can kill hope because Lucifer themselves rely on hope. Lucifer has been described as having an indomitable will. Lucifer really needs that indomitable will and hope. They need their indomitable will to wage war against Heaven and the ability to hope that they can win. If Lucifer countered Dream with something that can kill hope, they're essentially saying that their own ability to hope can be killed. Maybe by not responding, Lucifer is saying that their own ability to hope can't be killed.

If the Anti-Life Lucifer is talking about is anything related to the Anti-life equation, then despair is already part of the Anti-life (i.e. Aspects of the Anti-life are loneliness, alienation, fear, despair, etc). A lot of the aspects of Anti-life can be countered with hope.

    • @ICU1337
      @ICU1337 Год назад +5

The full formula typically manifests itself physically as a series of fiery, inscrutable alien symbols and glyphs which form around the one who uses it, while incomplete fragments are projected as singular glyphs.[2][11]
By speaking the Equation, Darkseid can insert the full formula into people's minds, giving them the mathematical certainty that life, hope, and freedom are all pointless."
According to DC, hope is also apart of the Anti-Life equation and its rendered moot. It does get a bit wishy-washy with this point though. Its like on one hand AL > Hope but then its like "maybe hope can work 🤷‍♂" So again, him countering A-L with hope doesnt add up. But we're just nitpicking, at the end of the day, plot armor is going to make this pointless, its just that technically Dream used rock to beat Lightbringers paper.

Episode 6 was a masterpiece of storytelling. It shows a strong guiding hand from Neil Gaiman in the project, focusing on consistent storytelling and character development over the long term (even at the risk of puzzling and turning away those who haven't read the source material), as opposed to squeezing as much action and drama into the first season as possible.

As a newbie to the source material, I have to say this has been the best breakdown of the Sandman material I've found, and I've even watched the Spanish breakdown versions (I'm bilingual). You've got a great balance of snark, humor, mockery, whilst tiptoeing right up to the 'spoilers' line w/out crossing it (not messing w/ your NDA); your serious attention to the storyline (and the previously mentioned sticking to the original Sandman source material), all the while offering your unique observations & depth I've found lacking in other reviews.
That'll save me from wasting time on at least a dozen superfluous channels, almost all of which start w/, "Must listen to this before watching Sandman" in their titles. And for that, kind sir, I thank you. Pleasant dreams...

Episode 6 was my fave! Loved, loved the sharing experiences with Death and the 500+ years with Hob Gadling. For me, the series was bingeworthy up til then. The drawn-out episodes about the vortex lost me, i had to fast forward through most of them. Each episode definitely felt inconsistent, with the 1st episode almost unbearably heavy. Glad i stuck with it, tho, as it got more humorous and complex. Tom Sturridge is perfect as Dream. Hope to see more of the siblings....

They've adapted it so so well. Going to be a big hit for Netflix for a few years presuming it gets 4 or 5 seasons. What they need now stranger things is winding down, more adaptions like this.
The acting is great too which helps a lot. Sandman and Lucifer being played by such talented actors really just elevates it. This, Shadow and Bone, Alice in Borderland, Bridgerton, Elite and All of us are dead will be the main shows for now until a big budget drama comes along.

I loved it, & REALLY want entire standalone series for both Johanna Constantine and Death.
The changes worked, for the most part, especially simplifying John Dee’s history whilst simultaneously giving him a sympathetic backstory (and making the episode not nearly as horrific as its source material, though still keeping the feel of it.)
Also, changing Brute and Glob to Gault allowed Morpheus to realize his mistakes and grow, something that we need to see to keep us involved with the character.
And Jenna Coleman was simply perfect as Johanna Constantine: give me a series of her demon-hunting any day! (Especially if you add in Ric the Vic, because I freaking love Meera Syal)
I have rarely been as happy with a casting as I was with Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death. She brought such warmth, joy and humour to her role that she utterly captured the underlying feeling of Death from the original. And her slightly frustrated but good-hearted older sister energy with Dream was spot-on. She seemed to be keeping herself from chucking something upside his head as she drew him out the entire way. I have never wanted to spend seven seasons and a film watching people join a psychopomp on their last journey, but now I do!
Now for next season, Netflix, give us the other Endless! I need side-quest Destruction & my girl Delirium!! (Fine, Destiny as well)
And more Roger Allan voicing Azazel!

If there is a season 2 and Gaiman remains faithful to his story in the source material . . .
    1) Lucifer's revenge on Morpheus is to burden him with the enormous responsibility of finding a new owner to the realm of Hell. Lucifer quits, hands the Key of Hell to Dream and it's absolute chaos. All the demons escape, many powerful supernatural beings threaten and tempt Dream because they want Hell, souls escape, ghosts of the newly deceased remain on earth as they don't go to hell, etc etc
    2) Just like in this season, getting Dream to kill a relative of his is Desire's main ploy through out the entire series run as means to kill Dream. For beings such as them, the punishment is their version of death.
    3) The season 1 side character "Barbie" (and her fairytale fantasy dream) will be the star of 4 to 5 episodes in season 2.
    4) Lyta Hall and her baby will be very very important characters (should this series not get cancelled prematurely) in the final season of the series.
