Agreed. Everyone adjusts to fit, not sure what happens after that though. Problem is sometimes it's not recoverable, skip the solo and come back in as they were about to.
@@TimRsn ..The drummer is King. It's why a solid drummer is so key live. Most of them go to warp speed and speed everything up.
This is why perfectionists can sometimes be the cause of imperfect results. Nobody noticed anything wrong, he just had to have it spot on perfect. It’s live, mistakes happen. That’s why improvisation like Murray and Gers makes them sound amazing when a slip up happens, because they bring it back perfectly and don’t get mad.
I remember seeing that they had issues on their first gig of the 2012 tour (Charlotte). I was in Atlanta and headed to the second show. Fortunately, they had it all figured out by then and they sounded like the best metal band in the world.
@@drummer7557 As a guitarist the drummer being off can be the worst thing to go wrong. It's pretty difficult to recover from when it happens during change. The best thing to do is for the drummer to stop, everyone keep going and the drummer to come back. That can be worse for the audience though.
Granted this is old now, but seeing this for the first time reminds me of Adrian saying this was partly why he left the first time. That he wanted the songs to breathe but they were being played at breakneck speed and he just had enough. Can see it on his face there, it’s his song being fumbled in front of him.
This song is actually not easy to play...& to see the 5 guys responsible for this masterpiece of a song ACTUALLY botch it (I don't care which one DID & is "at fault") tells us ALOT about this composition. Besides...these guys are in their 70's now...& energy like this becomes harder to maintain.
bah... c'est surtout grave pour Adrian, quoi... c'est clair qu'après avoir joué avec Kotzen, il doit plus supporter les errances habituelles de McBrain.
If Adrian is cranky at anyone it’s himself- he dragged the crap out of the timing. Tap your foot during the chorus and see where he comes in, and stays, for the e string part
I went back and watched it again . I’d assume they are running a click track and Nico got off and was trying to find the one. It happens to everyone. But what a brutal spot to have that happen.
Most bands do these days due to pyro and stage production. It doesn't make them less a musician, in fact it keeps it closer to the Album tempo , and of course they have in the studio , you record guitars to a click. Nicko would do rough tracks and then they time it all out in Pro Tools and adjust the click track accordingly.
I think he's got a problem with his ears monitor and did not ear well the drum. We can see him looking at Nicko, maybe, and we can ear that his not in the rhythm, that's why he first stop playing, trying to earing to the band, but still not get in rhythm.
He's not angry just annoyed and his mix on his amps is wrong , anyway for a man in his 60s he's looking great not many blokes still have hair at that Age
Nicko is slowing down and speeding up so drastically. I saw Maiden less than a year ago live and Nicko played aces high so slow that made Bruce Dickinson skip the beat 😢
The guy's over 70 playing drums for a heavy metal band people are gonna need to adjust their expectations a 2 hour set of complex and fast paced music is a challenge for a guy half his age.
It wasn’t the tempo, that may have had something to do with it as well, it’s a bit on the slow side. But Nicko only did TWO of the FOUR measures before the drum fill that was supposed to close the end of the bridge leading into Adrian’s solo. He literally cut him off 😂
Listen to the original. The bass comes in with the "melody notes" the 2nd time and the 3rd time is when the drums build up. It's exactly as the original. Adrian was supposed to continue his "melodyline" after the build up. The solo starts a bit later. I've played the song numerous times as a guitar player.🍻

saw the somewhere in time tour this is right when bands were switching to rack mount stuff not as many stacks and lots of rackmount lights at the side if the stage
I've played in bands for years. I don't think this had anything to do with Nicko's timing. I think his monitor or ear piece if he wears one wasn't working and he heard nothing...practically deaf. Stage volume in a venue is horrible. Plus Steve and Dave didn't have an issue. And if Nicko did mess up Adrian is classy enough not to call him out on it. He looked at Nicko to try and get a visual of where he was in the song so he can figure out where he should be in my opinion.
This. Regardless of how Nicko is all over the place, these guys rehearse and tour together for decades now. They basically gotten old together so every one of them must be very familiar with each others potential shortcomings at this stage of their careers. They are far too great musicians to stop playing completely just because one of the band member keeps missing time. That is most likely a technical issue, I can't think anything else that would make him STOP playing completely. A musician like them would only stop if they cannot hear what's being played or that their instrument somehow became totally unplayable (which would be replaced rather quickly by the tech guys). Plus, Lars never caused Kirk to stop playing for four decades now lol
Its Nicko. Hes dragging the beat so much thats it's impossible for anyone playing to keep it together. Nicko's studio work has also been "very loose" for a good 18 years. I truly think that Steve is very loyal to Nicko and Dave, he wont have his mate kicked out .. its up to Nicko to call it quits. Steve wont make him quit because Nickos been tight with Steve since 1983.
Yeah, for what I've watched of this tour, seems they have some issues with some songs parts, specially those from the SIT era, because of Nicko. The drumer is the one who "drives" the band after all🤷♂️...so Neil Peart was right👍

Adrian originally left Maiden because Nicko would get carried away and play too fast, resulting in Adrian being unable to keep up when play his solo's. I think that is what's going on again here.

It's not Nicko's fault. Adrian came into that solo intro WAY too slow. You can hear Nicko trying to slow the pace to Smith's. As a guitarist, I heard that instantly
If the singer goes off, you try not to hang him out to dry and go with him if possible, but not to the detriment of the song and the rest of the band.
ps... And Adrian is a decades long seasoned pro. He should have easily been able to figure it out and gotten back on track, or just played through it. You don't just stop playing
@@nickjohnson3622 the drummer is not king. It's the responsibilty of all the musicians to keep time.

He is a drum machine!!!
An old one

Wow people in the comments are so pessimistic. They still mess up way less than the young bands😂
You're always going to have some technical difficulties in the first show of a tour.
I remember seeing that they had issues on their first gig of the 2012 tour (Charlotte). I was in Atlanta and headed to the second show. Fortunately, they had it all figured out by then and they sounded like the best metal band in the world.
Yep
It was my hero. Nicko, he slowed down WAY to much and was totally off. There is an off time part during the kick drum as well.
@@drummer7557 As a guitarist the drummer being off can be the worst thing to go wrong. It's pretty difficult to recover from when it happens during change. The best thing to do is for the drummer to stop, everyone keep going and the drummer to come back. That can be worse for the audience though.
Yep best tickets are end of tour shows when the kinks are worked out
Granted this is old now, but seeing this for the first time reminds me of Adrian saying this was partly why he left the first time.

How can anyone listen to this and argue that Nicko isn't off tempo?
He's way out

I went back and watched it again . I’d assume they are running a click track and Nico got off and was trying to find the one. It happens to everyone. But what a brutal spot to have that happen.
Maiden has never played to a click track in studio or live
Nicko famously doesn't use a click track as you you can see from this video... he dropped the tempo
@@beardykins3073 I think Adrian fell behind on the tempo and rest of the band kept up with Nicko. Or is that what you also meant.

It wasn’t the tempo, that may have had something to do with it as well, it’s a bit on the slow side. But Nicko only did TWO of the FOUR measures before the drum fill that was supposed to close the end of the bridge leading into Adrian’s solo.
He literally cut him off 😂
The measures are correct... so it must've been the tempo or something of screen that we can't see or an audio thing🤔

Listen to the original. The bass comes in with the "melody notes" the 2nd time and the 3rd time is when the drums build up. It's exactly as the original.
Tap your foot to the beat..... Timing was continually changing. Even if a drummer cannot hear the band.... He should still keep time.
it's been happening pretty consistently for it to be a monitor issue. Nicko is dragging the beat routinely now. He's all over the place.
Adrian could definitely hear, that’s why he slowed his part to match Nikko, but then Nikko continued to change tempos. Dude looked frustrated.
@adamregan4921 The time will move, no matter how good a technician you are. If you can't hear, it's like driving a car at night without headlights.
First concert I saw in 84 first concert my son saw in 2019 and then 2022. For sure one of if not the best live act to ever perform.
