She sings this with so much emotion. No one can do this song better than Roberta Flack.
100% AGREE!!!
I like Lori Lieberman. You can feel her listening to Don McLean.
@@asfdadfgdasfh4444 Said no-one:)
True
@@asfdadfgdasfh4444, I took a listen to the fugees version, although it was good and I'm not knocking it ,I think it's a generational thing. Roberta was the first for us" older folks ', her voice has more emotion in it. My opinion, thanks
I have always said... the 2 most beautiful songs ever recorded are 1 The studio version of Roberta Flack The first time ever I saw your face, and 2 the studio version of unchained melody by the righteous Brothers. Great reaction. Thank you. 😊
Yes! The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face!
"Killing Me Softly With His Song" was written by the songwriting team of Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel, and first recorded by Lori Lieberman in 1972. According to Lieberman, the song was inspired by Don McLean, a singer/songwriter famous for his hit "American Pie." After being mesmerized by one of his concerts at the Troubadour theater in Los Angeles - and in particular McLean's song "Empty Chairs" - Lieberman wrote a poem on a napkin describing how she felt about McLean's performance and brought it to Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox, who were writing songs for her new album. Peace out.
I think she deserved a song writing credit.
@@festival5920 Will probably never happen. Fox and Gimbel have tried to downplay Lieberman's contribution after their relation went sour over the years. They even tried to get McLean to retract a statement on his website about being the inspiration for the song.
I was fortunate enough to have seen Ms. Lieberman perform this song, among others, in a club in Greenwich Village back in 1973. She was terrific. And I still have the album on vinyl.
@@dougbrowning82 they screwed her
Spot on info.
Great version the song was originally released by Lori Lieberman
The actual original was from Lori Lieberman, Roberta’s version came out a year later in ‘73. I like Roberta’s best
One of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.
Roberta is soooooo classy and a great artist. ❤❤❤❤❤
Amazing unforgettable legendary Hall of Fame worthy tune. Sorry to hear about Roberta with that incurable illness!😢❤
Roberta was the first artist to win Grammy Award for Record of the Year 2 years in row, and is first artist to win Song of Year 2 years in a row. She won both award for this song in 1974, and in 1973 for The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.
This song was inspired by the original singer Lori Lieberman's reaction after hearing the great Don McLean in concert.
The specific song by McLean was "Empty Chairs."
Growing up in the late 60s and early 70s, Roberta Flack was and still is my favorite female voice! BTW, I'm 63 now and listened to many different genre's of music with a dad who played the big bass playing swing music, my mom listened to Ella's Fitzgerald and Dinha Washington and four sisters and one brother who all listened to Mo- town, hard rock, disco and top 40s ! Great time to be alive for music!
Now react to: "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." by Roberta So sad she has ALS. Such a cruel disease.
I've known this song my whole life but for some reason it really hit me in my feels today. She has such a lovely, pure voice. I love, love, love her song "Jesse" (and of course "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face") and so many others.
Completely agree!
Her voice was magnificent. This song dates to 1973.
The song is from 1972. Roberta Flack's cover is from 1973.
Roberta Flack wins this one, hands down.
LOVE this song! As well as her First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. Like someone else said, it's like an Angel singing. I also like Lauren Hill's version of this song, a close 2nd! I have the urge to sing, "one time, one time" , too! lol
I'm a classic rock fan but I love me some Robert Flack!
Another original that may blow your mind …. Dolly Parton singing I will always love you
Nice reaction to a great song. Btw, Australian singer Olivia Newton John was Sandy from Grease.
She got a huge boost when the so g was used in Clint Eastwood's movie" Play misty for me,".......
It's already been said but you must listen to The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face! So beautiful
My personal favourite track of hers is the duet she did with Donny Hathaway - '' The Closer I Get '' both voices are top notch ❤❤
That song has been lodged in the back of my mind forever. I had lost the melody and tempo, but the words go round and round in my head. Thank you for putting it back together by calling it out.
Yes and "Where is the Love"
So sorry to hear Roberta Flack has ALS. She's one of my favorite singers. She has such a beautiful song and sings so effortlessly. As others have requested, I'd love to see your reaction to her singing The First Time I Saw Your Face(First Take). It's absolutely beautiful!
That is such a sad thing because ALS just can't have a good outcome - especially goven Roberta's age.
So very true.
Just so you know this is not the original. This song was written and performed by Lori Lieberman.
Roberta is the best known
Having heard this when it was released, its the only version for me. I was a young 24 when was release and newly married.
TONIGHT, I CELEBRATE MY LOVE FOR YOU,
FEEL LIKE MAKING LOVE,
THE FIRST TIME EVER. These 3 songs will knock you off your seats. Enjoy
It wasn't just the brothers making sweet baby-making music. Many ladies could go toe to toe with the best of them and Roberta Flack was definitely one of those women. All the best Roberta.♥🙏
It’s tough to put into words how beautiful this song is, how Roberta sings it and the memories of better times that i first heard this in. Sorry to hear that she is not well. Very nice reaction Dee & Chod. ❤
You should check out some more older singers Sassy Sarah Vaughn singing Misty in Sweden 1964. She had a high fever at the time but you would never know it.
Nobody sings this song like Roberta Flack. I've heard remakes, but to me they don't reach the quality of Roberta's.
Lori Lieberman recorded this song first. Roberta was second. Lori said she was inspired by Don McLean. The songs composers Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel did not give her writing credit. Lori's version is more folk.🤙
And Norman Gimbel was having an extramarital affair with Lori at the time. He was 24 years older than Lori. What a rat. Typical.
🙏 for Roberta. Always loved this song. ALS is a horrible disease. Lou Gehrig's disease.
I had no idea Roberta had ALS! What a gut punch to hear that. Unfortunately, people never get better from that. She was a brilliant vocal artist and this song may have been her best.
I was in junior high school, and this was all the rage. So glad you have now heard the Original!
*~ I was 10 when this song hit; I had an out of body experience the first time I heard this from a jukebox in a pizza place in Wisconsin...I will never forget the feeling...BEST ~*
Such a beautiful song and she is the BEST one to sing it!
Sweet Roberta is from Black Mountain, North Carolina, which has a long history of advanced arts. I hope she recovers. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" may be my favorite song of all.
If there was ever a perfect song to slow dance to, this is it.
I like the natural quality of this version versus the more recent cover. This has no auto-tune and no weird sounding computer generated sounds. It's all real instruments and real voices done with real talent.
The first time ever I saw your face by her is amazing.
One word for this PERFECTION
Roberta Flack is just incomparable. What a voice. I really like her duets with Donnie Hathaway ("Where is the Love").
all natural without ANY vocal avrobatics.....NO AUTOTUNE. Watch the movie "20 Feet From Stardom" it is a dicumentary about famous backup singers.
ALS is 100% fatal, afaict. We had a friend die of it around 25 years ago. Your mind stays clear, your body slowly quits working. I’m really sorry to hear Roberta Flack has it.
Roberta's is the first commercially successful, but not the original version of the song. Here is the first recording, by Lori Lieberman who began the composition by writing lyrics after being moved by the intimacy of the songs of Don McLean at one of his concerts. The song was completed by her producers Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel. ruclips.net/video/ua4n_sTa9f4/видео.html
You’ve got to check out,”Where is the love.” Please
Iconic. Thanks you guys. 💖
She truly owns this song. The only other singer who I truly enjoy listening to
with regard to it is young Angelina Jordan, for she tweaks it with more of jazz
vibe than Roberta's beautiful rendition.
I've never heard this song performed by anyone but Roberta. No need.
The song is about being moved personally by a musician's performance.
Wow, I can't believe that you have never heard this before.
Also, I like your cap.
First On Race Day
Roberta Flack is a great singer with a great voice and Killing me softly is a beautiful song. But Roberta's version is NOT the original, it is a cover of Lori Lieberman's original. Lori sang her original version one year before Roberta.
When reacting to a song, please react to the original version or if you react to a cover give at least some credit to the original artist.
I saw her perform in the late 80s in Cincy. She opened for, um, Bill Cosby.
If I remember correctly this song was inspired by Don McLeans American Pie.
Yes, Don's song inspired Lori Lieberman, who was the first to record it.
Don McLean, yes. American Pie? Doubtful. I don’t see how it would inspire the subject matter of this song.
She was inspired by Don McClean’s song Empty Chairs. She took notes on a napkin and realized she was crying. Took the notes/poem to the writers working on her album.
I know younger people have mostly only heard whatever that other group did with this song, but this is so much better! The way it was meant to sound!
This was written about the great Don McLean (American Pie, Vincent, etc.).
Roberta had one of the most beautiful voices in contemporary music history. Actor/Director Clint Eastwood took the time to use one of her songs in it’s entirety in one of his early movies, and it didn’t disappoint. She was the real deal.
Great song from a great singer, The Fulgees did a great cover but Roberta’s will always be the best
So much talent.
Oh my gosh you two, your faces when this songs just says it all. It is so beautiful done by Roberta.
Such an incredible voice !!!!
I heard this song in a nightclub way back when it first came out, and the singer, who was not a native English speaker, sang "strumming my face with his fingers". She sang it so well that it was more charming than hilarious. It's amazing what talent can do.
The best version for me. Nothing wrong with the Fugees, but this resonates with me more.
Lauryn Hill and the Fugee`s covered this and its AWESOME!!! This and Faith No mores cover of the Commodores "Easy", IMO are the very best ever Covers!
Every time I heard the Fugees do their version it only made me want to hear Roberta.
One of the most beautiful voices in music to have ever lived.
See that’s What an angel sounds like a lot of people are on this planet because of the song
There are few songs or performances done as well as this.
Imitation is the highest form of flattery.
can you do a reaction to Brand New Morning by Bob Seger
Another oldie but very much a goodie. Last slow dance vibe with a beautiful girl just met. A lovely simple bass line groove to go with it.
The original of this song was by a young white lady, while at the airport Roberta heard the song and re-did it
True, it is sad that so few people know this.
These Women Of Soul Bring MUST HEAR Classic Vocals & Some Great Advice,, Betty Wright "Clean Up Woman",, Jean Knight "Mr. Big Stuff" & "Gwen McCrae "Rockin' Chair"
The LEGENDARY Iconic Ms Roberta Flack ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I've ever heard.....I'm normally a Van Halen-AC/DC-Guns & Roses kinda guy. _FIRE_ 🔥 Y'all needa do some Sade. "Paradise", "Smooth Operator", "No Ordinary Love", "The Sweetest Taboo" are all great ones. (although you could throw a dart at a list of her songs and not hit a bad one).
I believe this song was written about Don McLean.
Yes, you're right, the singer/songwriter who visited Don McLean's concert wrote a poem about her experience. The lyrics of the song are based on that poem. She also sang the original version. That singer/songwriter is Lori Lieberman. One year later Roberta Flack covered Lori's song.
Effortless. 👍❤🤙
I recommend Roberta Flack’s The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.
Mesmerizing.
this is also a cover
Hiya! Thank you so much. I got to see her here in Australia and she was AMAZING! She was running a special music school for underprivileged children into her 70's. Thank you for showing so much respect for someone who thoroughly deserves the accolades.
Olivia Newton-John who played Sandy in Grease and also had several major pop radio hits in the '70s and into the early '80s. Super hot chick from Australia with a great voice, laugh.
Roberta did a duet with Donny Hathaway, "where is the Love" that is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
What a voice - so passionate. I remember 1st hearing Roberta Flack as a youngster and being overwhelmed emotionally with The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face...this is also gorgeous
Thisun is a true classic...Roberta Had such a seductive voice...so sweet and sincere....what a Lady! Ty guyz
One of my all-time favorite song 🎵 ❤ Absolutely love this song and I play at least once a week. Roberta Flack is one of my all time favorite artist/singers. The Fugis did a cover of this song featuring Lauryn Hill as the singer, and really really like Lauryn's version, too. But this version is softer and more intimate!!!
Forever Roberta Flack.....there is none that can match her.
React to Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway. "The closer I get to you." Great duo.
Only a master knows how to sing out of time and make it work. Sting does the same thing in "Murder by Numbers." But, I would never put Sting in Roberta Flack's category. She is one of the great ones.
Never liked this song!! The BEST Roberta Flack "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"
Roberta is a great singer! My husband is a musician and mostly loves rock but to be fair he likes just about any music. He absolutely shocked me when he said one of my favorite songs had the best lyrics he has ever heard. I wanted to share with you two knowing, how much you love music. He plays drums but mostly the guitar. The song is The Heart of the Matter by Don Henley. Please don't think I wanted you to play on RUclips. It's for your pleasure.
Roberta Flack "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"...Nuff Said.
Roberta was opening for Marvin Gaye and closed her set with her new song Killing Me Softly. After she finished and came off stage, Marvin asked if she had recorded it yet. She hadn't. Marvin said, "Baby, don't even do that song live again until you record it." Good advice!
This song is about Don McLean and his effect on her!
The song is about Don McLean and his effect on the artist who sang the original version. That is not Roberta Flack!
Classic song...two other great songs about guitar players: Superstar by The Carpenters, and Guitar Man by Bread.
Sweet voice.
perfection
I agree, so many artists have passed away this year, Christine McVie from Fleetwood Mac, Irene Cara, Olivia Newton John
I'm sorry to tell you but there is no recovery or comeback from ALS (a disease you may know as Lou Gehrigs Disease). It is a terminal illness that eventually takes away all muscular control from the body. Sometimes it happens quickly and sometimes it can take years but everyone who gets it unfortunately dies because they lose the ability to breathe. If she can longer sing there's a good chance that she will soon be gone. So sad. Unfortunately I've known a number of people who succumbed to this disease, one i nthe last year. She had one of the most beautiful voices ever!
Haven't heard Roberta Flack sing this in a long time. I forgot how great she was...even better than I remembered. Flawless performance. She owns this song.
She's so great. Y'all should really react to Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway sing The Closer I Get to You.
The legends are in portuguese! You guys have got this video from Brazil, a fan from here made this. That's amazing!!!
Yes... We are losing our beloved iconic entertainer's. This why it is soooo important to keep thier music alive. Thank you, with much love and respect.
