Same topic brought me to RUclips and I just discovered your video. I am in the same situation, I will be completing my MPA in May and I am being offered 35k for a coordinator position. I thought about this long and hard, and I think I will take it for 3 reasons: 1- I have little to no supervisory experience and my goal is to remain in this position for at least a year to gain a little experience. 2- we are in the middle of a pandemic and I have no idea what the future holds for the job market 3- I am single (for now), with no serious commitments, so being in this position for a year or so, wouldn’t be the worst. But in all honesty, 35k is WAY too low for anyone with a master’s degree. Unfortunately, the situation we are in currently, is forcing us to make sacrifices. Great video 👍🏿👍🏿😊😊
Thank you so much for sharing! Getting/having a job during this pandemic is a true blessing and yes, we have to start somewhere. I am glad you were able to make the best decision for yourself and your situation. That initial reality check is like woah lol but it definitely gets better over time. Best of luck on your journey!
I just graduated with my masters in social work a week ago, and turned down a job that was only 30k, and had soo many tasks/extensive work within the role. I was debating back and forth with myself too and I felt bad afterwards thinking “maybe I should’ve taken it.” It’s unfortunate
@@LifeCoachYvette exactly! I think some employers think most new graduates are just that desperate, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, like you said, we can’t be stressed for that little.
Girl I can totally feel your pain! I was making $38,000 in my first job in higher ed with an MSW, I was so sad and ended up working 2 side jobs to make the difference up. Great video!
It's not low if its your first full time job. It's a great stepping stone and " Low is better than No." It's just my mantra. Keep it up and happy new year.
Thank you for sharing your story. As a culture, we have to do a better job preparing the next generation & setting reasonable expectations for adulting. Too many of us have this same experience. It can be unfortunate rude awakening.
$35000 is a good entry level salary for a BA. People are expecting the work conditions that existed in the 1970's. A BA now is the equivalent of a High School diploma in the 50's and 60's when not everyone had one.
Yvette this video is so insightful! Thank you for authentically sharing you testimony and being transparent . You’re an amazing speaker. This may be where your bread and butter is.
I have a BA in sociology i was going to get my master's in social work but i realize i wasn't into social work so now i have a degree that i don't use. I really enjoyed watching this video amazing journey i like how you didn't give up and continue on your path
I have my BA in Sociology and I am planning yo get my MSW and I’ve been out of school since 1991 but the options are so amazing I love knowledge and I know I can do a lot with my MSW and plan to pursue a LCSW I’m older and wiser…. Get a Career Coach/Therapist and walk yourself through your life and what you desire!!!! Hope this post helps someone who is not sure of what to do!!!! The government positions are amazing as well especially if you want security and many are remote in research or travel with medical SW -the skies the limit now!!!!
@@Melanatedminimalist I am glad that I saw your comment. I am really considering going for my BSW and then MSW. I currently have an Associates in Psychology. I am nervous because I am not a spring chicken, so I felt that I shouldn't do it. This encouraged me. Thank you and good luck to you.
Thanks for sharing, I'm currently in school for my BSW and hope to continue on to get my MSW and LCSW. I'm so worried I make more at my bank job than I will in my future social work job.
Thank you for watching! This was directly after graduation but it has gotten A LOTTTT better with time. I’ve also learned so many ways social workers can earn 6 figures and more especially as you increase your credentials. You could keep your banking job and do therapy on the side lol sometimes you have to get creative to meet your needs as well
I'm only one semester from earning my MSW from UTA and I just had a friend who graduated with a degree in food service and he got offered a job as a manager at In & Out Burger in Austin starting off at $125K a year. Had a guy I retired from the Army with get his CDL back in 2016 and now he's earning 65K a year. I'm about to graduate and really regretting this path I took.
Wowwwwww 125k!! I had to Google that and the average is 160! Yeah I mean there’s money to be made in social work but factoring the time and energy it took to get the degree makes this seem a lot more appealing
Thank you for this video! I’m experiencing nearly the same thing now. I’m 24, about to graduate with my MSW and I’m facing this same dilemma. I’m definitely going to be looking for a good part time gig like you mentioned
It definitely gets better!! I would also recommend getting your license as soon as possible even if you don’t think you will use it. It will open up a lot of opportunities to make more money on the side.
I’m so glad you got the full message. I definitely have NO regrets for getting my Masters. At the time the starting salary was just a reality check. You got this!!!
You are preaching to the choir. This is the story of my life. Much needed information. I will feel like I have arrived once I pay off these student loans.
Haha! I graduated with a BA in sociology, and I’m currently in grad school for it (7th year 😩). Plus, I’m a SUNY Grad. Yassss!!!!! We twinning up in here 😂😂😂.
Hey. I noticed u said that u graduated from SUNY Albany. There’s a decent amount of jobs in the capital region that pays pretty well in the state. Have u ever tried applying to be a social worker for the office of mental health? You’ll be able to work ur first year there with your MSW. But overall, the best way to avoid being low ball is to avoid working for non profits. I got my BA in sociology from SUNY Albany and I’ve found a great paying job in human services at an employment center w my bachelors. We should definitely look diligently for great paying jobs in SW bc we are so programmed to believe that we don’t go into this field for the money when we all need money to live in the capitalist country.
Oh nvm. It seems like you’re killing it with Air b&b and having another outlet of income. I hope you continue to get to where you wanna be because you deserve it 🎆
Omg thank you for your comment lol as soon as I graduated I moved back to NYC to live at home and avoid paying rent. At that time I definitely didn’t know how much more was out there salary wise. I desperately took the first opportunity I could get in a college system and that was the starting rates. Over time things got much better as I learned to navigate. Thank you for your kind words and I wish you the best in your life journey as well!
29 yo with only a bachelor's in bio trying to find a job at least $35k so I can pursue a masters. I cannot take a pay cut while studying. it's been so frustrating to try to show my potential in interviews to be selected
