- this was my 15 minutes of fame on popmaster on the ken bruce show. it is so cringe worthy and embarrassing.
before you start calling me thick, its alot harder when you're on the phone and not just in your car or van shouting at the radio!!!

Ken has a voice of a warm blanket! Anyone could recognize that voice. Ken Bruce is a living legend!
Also love his sense of humour - recall a contestant mistaking Willie Nelson for Charles Anaznarour - he totally lost it! 🤣🤣🤣
I used to listen to Ken every day in my workshop and always had a go at Pop Master, but I was never brave enough to get on the phone and do it properly. Well done - you scored three more points than me!
Fair play for uploading this!! Tough questions there.....I managed 12 (the guess the year was a pure guess). I was on Popmaster in 2013 and like you say, it’s so much harder on the phone. I scored 36 on that occasion and got the 3 in 10. I qualified for the Champions League only to crash and burn to score 12. It’s very much luck of the draw with the questions but brilliant fun!!
You're right Lee. It's easy as you say, shouting at the radio but when you're on the spot, speaking to Ken, pressure really on, then it's a whole different ball game. Anyway, well done for being on the show and at least you can laugh at yourself which is a really good quality.

At least you had a go, that's the main thing! I only got 2 of those questions right myself, including that 'name the year' question, but that was by a sheer lucky guess! Even when I've been playing along while listening to the radio, I don't tend to do THAT well :D
I got 18, but it was admirable how well you took it. Though I haven't been on the show I'm sure it's harder under that pressure than just listening to it at home.
Thanks for sharing that Lee. Tough questions for most avid pop fans to be fair. The majority of the DJs on Radio 1,2,3,4 & 5 wouldn't have got double figures Mate!

well done mate for posting this! no disgrace! I normally score in the twenties but only got 12 on this! like u say it's a lot harder when somebody else is answering the questions coz u can also say I knew that and score yourself a point!

Yes, usually the first question is really easy, just to get you off the mark.

I got 24 points (but only half of Bobby Purify so maybe i should only get 2 for that?) and i got the year, there were some tough questions there though :-/

I was a contestant in 2018. It was amazing and reading without reply through the love and the 'hate' on Twitter afterwards was enjoyable and very much part of it.
"middle of the road radio 2 type music", they probably picked the tough questions after that one!! Well done for having the bottle in the first place.
its all down to the questions a few weeks ago i scored 3 and two days later i got my only maximum score ever listening to this quiz... as for your questions i scored 18 but failed on all three bonus questions. my problem is im pretty good on stuff from the early 70s to the mid 80s but pretty hopeless on anything from the last 30 years so i would have to drop lucky with the eras if i took part
Those questions were hard. I only got 9. I have won many pop quizzes, but my average on PopMaster is always 12-15. Is it true that when you phone up they ask you questions and if you don't do well, they just cut you off? This morning someone asked why she was cut off, and Ken said "It's because of a lack of knowledge... We cut you off to save you money". I thought he was joking, but then I rememebered how a few months ago, he got really stroppy after several people got low scores, saying "Here's a novel idea... if you're going to phone PopMaster, can you make sure you have at least SOME knowledge of pop music? I thought this was harsh, seeing as 1. Not everyone is a music DJ like him. 2. The questions span 50+ years of music. 3. He wasn't even the presenter when three people had low scores. Gary Davies was standing in! Another time he got unfairly stroppy was when a guy last year said in the beginning "Happy Birthday to my son, who is 16 today" He didn't go on and on, but because of that, Ken just said "Ok thanks Bye" at the end, and refused to let this poor guy say any Hellos to anyone! If the phone system does cut people off without first telling them why, that is so rude. I am posting this while PopMaster is on ...in protest!

Phil Swern who sets the questions used to do a really good quiz on Capital - You Aint Heard Nothing Yet. Hes actually made the Radio 2 questions seem slightlu easier than I remember the Capital Programme ones.
I squeaked a 9 with no bonus questions right. I'd never have the guts to do it for real so well done you! Plus you got the t-shirt, which is what everyone wants anyway ;-)
I got 27, but not silly enough to think I would get anywhere near that live on air! (Would start swearing at wrong answers!😂)

These questions are absolutely rediculous mate really fucking hard and I like to think of myself as the 70s and 80s throwback and I got sod all points ! Don’t think yourself bad at all chap x
So good to here that this show inspired me to do a daly quiz on my radio show XLR radio Monday to Thursday 1-4 the fun starts at one and I’ll knock on your door till 4

I phoned up all my mates and told them that I'd been chosen to go on... When I walked in the pud that afternoon they were playing a CD that they'd burned of it. Even my dad who lives 300 miles away who I've not seen in about 15 years because of a falling out sent me a txt with just the words "I Don't Know, Ken"... I never even told him I was on. Hed just heard it in his car. Hahahahaha.
It took me years and years of trying everyday to get on that quiz and when I finally do I choke. Hahaha. I know you've probably only commented to advertise your show, but I'm gonna let it slide and let your comment be visible.

@@Cobalt-Jester thanks cj. That wasn’t my intention I do a different quiz e every day I try and make it interesting and informative as hearing music from the decades can really trigger your memory cells and help you remember things which is a good thing right
I just listened to it again and only got two this time. After serious thought, if the questions were only on May 1968 I would do rather well. (The last two weeks in May I might add)

Someone got 12 points yesterday. Ken said no fear, it's been done before. And the second contestant got 3. It definitely is the luck of the draw!
That was like champions League Popmaster! I got the year, but I usually do, then all I got was Leanne Rimes and Stevie Wonder, I didn't even get Bill Withers, tough questions them!
jeepers dude, they were tough, I get around 20 ish on a good day like yourself, but only managed 6 with these questions! bet its 10 x tougher too live, i wouldn't have the balls to do it live so hats off to you!

Good ol Ken Bruce, love his show. .. a bit weird, listening to him on youtube at 1:40am, normally in my car, shouting out the right answers!
I’ve heard people get none right and on the last question Ken gives so many clues that he practically gives them the answer to make sure they get at least 3 points so def not the worst
Good on you, my average is nine, on a good day, sometimes I even go into the minus with wrong guesses.
Ey Up Lee; When I was on the show I got 6 points. Mind you, I was too busy showing off doing Zippy and George, Prince Charles and Jimmy Saville impressions! I asked the researcher, before I went on, if Ken had a sense of humour. She said he did. All I can say is, he must have gone to work without it that day! Best Wishes, Billy Gibbons. Very difficult questions...... And he was also out delivering Christmas cards at the same time. So double the pressure.I got the Elvis Presley one correct........ And Elton John with Kinky Dee.
i listen to pop quiz all the time and they were really obscure questions. the winners of pop quizzes generally tend to be as dull as shit anyway so don't be too down on yourself.

yes i can tell by the popmaster jingle this is an old one. when was this? we listen to this at work although i usually just catch the one contestant but somedays its easy but these questions were hard. id've got maybe 6 or 7 points.

I got 36 (one year out). I got on in 2007, scored 36 then and got the three in ten on the Jacksons and Jackson Five.

I managed 18, those bonus ones were hard. I've been on popmaster twice. First time got 33 points and won, second time got 12 and lost. All depends what questions you get. Nerves can get to you and if you choose the wrong bonus...well...!!!

That's not the worst score ever. You got one question right all by yourself. I too have had days when I've only scored 3 points. But other days I've got as high as 30. It's luck of the draw on the day.
There are plenty of people who have only scored 3 points after ken has almost given them the answer.

over the years of listening ive got maximum points once, and generaly done well . however theres a few time when ive only got a few questions right.its the luck of the draw .at least leeofbacup has been brave enough to go on popmaster which is something im not brave enough to do .its not about winning its about the taking part.well done lad

Obviously he has never driven a car or wagon for a living.... I was a driver when this was recorded and travelled the length and breadth of the country... Radio 2 Is the most listened to station in the country, mainly by the British truckers/drivers. Who indecently Sally Traffic is the spokesperson of.... Terry Wogan in the morning got 6 million listeners. That was more than the rest of the stations put together.And Radio 2 found Katie Melua.... 'nuff said.

Thank you. What is not known is that when you're thinking of the answer there's not just Ken on the other end of the phone. There's also a member of production who's saying things like "keep calm", "you can do it", "relax", and "please don't swear- DON'T SWEAR", as you're trying to answer the questions. Hahahaha. I was a nervous wreak as I knew the entire work force in the warehouse would be listening and I was worried about being on the quiz in work hours and getting into trouble. But not as worried about all the staff giving me a hard time when I did bad. lol. Hahahaha.

Thank you.... I have always been blessed with bad luck and clumsiness... For years I had done that quiz while out and about in my van. I always scored mid to high 20's.... But when I finally get on the radio, after phoning every day for 5 years, I get these questions and all I get is humiliated in front of my friends and a 'Radio 2' CD wallet that only holds 10 cds.... lol

Well done for posting but you need to reduce the volume. I suspect your input was clipping rather badly from an overloaded signal. (You had the source turned up too loud when you hit the record button.)

ha ha, i made the classic mistake of calling my mates, the works depot and family members.....
they all heard my die on my arse, and they even had the decency of recording it on cd , so they could put it on as i walked in my local pub, that afternoon.
I got '84 at first but changed my mind to '87 ... so I got that wrong. Damn! Nul points.
I'm too scared to go on Popmaster, I can get up to 27, but 3 is not uncommon either, I'm not consistent enough!

How can you be the worst contestant - Ive heard several people get zero. At least you didnt get Mike Dickin, who used to do a notoriously hard quiz when on Capital, I`m sure it was done deliberately so he could berate people who said "and any one who knows me" when doing the dedications after failing it.

i didn't know any, I was 1 year out one question, i guessed 1985 for careless whisper. Also I thought Stevie Wonder "Uptight" went to number one, i guess not then.

Narcissisticnobody I'm not brave at all. I just thought it was too funny not to share. When everyone is standing around laughing at you, you might as well join in. Life's too short to care about what other people think about you and if I made just one person smile with this video then I'll be happy... Pick up the phone and give it a go... You still get a prize even if you do as bad as me lol... And I think it's a t-shirt nowadays... I wish I got a t-shirt.
I got three right, none were bonus. Actually I'm lying, I cheated on the Stevie Wonder one. Another thing, if truth be told, the James and Bobby Purify one is one of my favourite records of all time. On merit I only got the Lulu one with any skill but then again it was the first question and that's always the easiest. Yep, just another typical pop master quiz for me.......lying, cheating and getting the easy one(s).
