It was brilliant. Still remember this hoax quite well - I fell for it completely. Started to wonder, though, when there was this caller who was given a really hard time by Ken/Rob for never having watched Gavin and Stacy. Couldn't quite understand why Ken was so unusually keen on that series, hahaha.
Loved this! I listened to Ken every morning. Sadly missed. Never realised it was 1 April but thought Ken was drunk! It all seemed a bit off. Never got it! Even when listeners said ‘ you sound different !😂😂😂😂’. Heard Ken say later, even his family didn’t know and I believe he said his sister (apologies if it wasn’t) or similar thought he’d had a few whiskeys before going on! This was the best April Fools ever.x Brill.
Same here. Love Rob, he cracks me up doing his Ronnie Corbett and Terry Wogan impressions on WILTY. He got Ken done to a tee, never even noticed it was'nt Ken himself as it was identical. listened to Ken for years, especially Pop Master.
I remember listening to this. It was great fun. It took me about 10 minutes to work it out I think. I remember afterwards hearing the BBC had lots of emails with people worrying about Ken and questioning if he was having a break down. I remember listening all morning and assuming after half hour it would be revealed but time went on and I was amazed that it went all the way to 12pm. Good laugh and remember it so clearing 6 odd years later.
..just listened to pop master (18/10/21) and remembered this! brilliant!! thankyou for sharing it.. forgot the pop master jingle was so different.. (prefer it now) 🙂
Just seen in an interview with Rob Brydon that even Kens sister was fooled by this. But listening now you can hear Robs voice and Welsh tones. Rob is a very fast talker as to Ken who is slower.
I swore I wasn't going to fall for an April Fool that year - and this got me before I even got out of bed (I live in the US - I wasn't having a long lie). Thanks for the terrific edit (though it goes a bit off the rails at ~31min).
Though a great upload, this isn't the full Rob cut. Among the missing 10 mins, it omits my favourite bit - Rob talking utter gibberish for a whole minute. In fact, that was probably the bit when Ken's sister rang Ken's wife to say get him off the air, he's drunk.
Brilliant; love the bits where he tells Lynn Bowles he's 'sitting on something big', and refers to Rob Brydon as 'the little Welsh guy with the bad skin'.....
Heh he yes, I remember listening to this and wondering how long it would be before he was 'quietly' carted off by the producers! Very funny and fair play to Ken for being such a good sport! :)
Is the first contestant on 'Popmaster' Ruth Jones? Hence the joke about her never having seen 'Gavin and Stacey' plus she wouldn't be offended by anything Rob Brydon said. I loved this show. Lynn Bowles does so well playing it straight with the travel links. Love the way Rob almost goes into Ronnie Corbett at times!
Ken shoulda got Terrys job ,his style is the nearest & he had a show ready made for early morning. It was a damn disgrace that Evans got it, like Steve wright ,he told radio 1, rightly or wrongly to f-0ff,sorry doesn't quite cover it in the real world.Luckily both are gone.
Similar but on reflection not close enough, best impersonator was Peter Serafinowicz of Terry Wogan. Rob needed a slightly deeper voice for Ken. Good on the BBC for allowing it through.
Maybe it's just because I'm scottish, but it's really quite obvious that it's not Ken lol. But I can see why those who aren't completely familiar with Scottish accents would fall for it
I was one of those who fell for it. I don't really listen to the radio, even if its on, so I don't really take in what im listening to but I defo sense something was off because of the odd things "Ken" said.
I'm Welsh and sometimes I can maybe hear him getting a sound or two wrong but if I was listening to this on a crackly FM radio in 2011 without actually knowing it was Rob, I'm pretty sure I would have just assumed it was Ken still recovering from the night before lol
I heard the show at about 9.45 and listened for about a minute. All I thought was that it was annoying. I was very busy that day and I turned over to Classic FM. So I didn't twig.

Shout out to all re-listening to this as Ken moves on to new pastures and leaves BBC Radio 2. Thanks for all the laughs and great music Ken!
Caller: "I'm a chartered accountant".
"Ken": "Was that a childhood dream?"🤣🤣🤣
He got Ken spot on, every nuance, every line was perfect!
Some of those voice inflections - takes a lot of research time as well as talent I guess.
On his last day - this is still one of the best wind ups ever.
Cried laughing at this having only just found it after all these years. Pure genius and best April fools ever.
This is one of the best April fool's jokes ever! I remember tuning in that day, I got it after about 15 minutes.
When he said "...er who likes Twitter? I got twatted this morning" it was so funny. Respect
I remember hearing this on my radio in my workshop and not realising for some while that anything was amiss. Absolutely brilliantly done.
The greatest ever April Fools prank, heard it live and was in stitches, actually I am listening to it again!
He managed to sneak in "I got twatted this morning". Bravo.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This was hilarious live, I must have clocked him after about 10 mins and it had me crying with laughter,......still does.
Brilliant! Thanks for saving this.

29:25 "You're a heavy drinker?" Remember driving around PMSL to this back in 2011! Priceless!
This is the first time I've come across this. Rob Brydon is absolutely brilliant. Just getting through pop master is a task in itself I think.
Same here. Love Rob, he cracks me up doing his Ronnie Corbett and Terry Wogan impressions on WILTY. He got Ken done to a tee, never even noticed it was'nt Ken himself as it was identical. listened to Ken for years, especially Pop Master.
I can confirm that nothing has changed in 11 yrs-Jeremy Vine is STILL boring us all senseless! Jimmy young he 'aint. 😅
This is probably the last time the BBC had a sense of humour.
Remember this so well, thought he was pissed at 1st, knew something was different about him. Loved it classic 😂😂😂
Both Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan are extremely talented, good at what they do. This was a stroke of genious!!
Absolutely amazing. To keep up that impersonation for so long! Rob is brilliant!
I remember listening to this. And I never had a clue. And I love Ken Bruce!
I remember like it was yesterday, as I was driving to Gainsborough from Doncaster with my ex. It was a nice warm sunny morning too.It was brilliant!

I remember this. Took me about an hour to work it out, then the day, and date dawned on me! Brilliantly 👏🤣
Epic!! Utterly epic!!! Missed this magic show cos of work!! Thanks for repeating it here!! I'm in hysterics!! :D :D :D
Your a heavy drinker!
Never drink alone I think that's the key. Absolutely fantastic
This is an absolute joy from start to finish
Wanted to hear this for so long didnt dissapoint i like Ken bruce and rob brydon did him brilliantly one of our funniest comics 😂
..just listened to pop master (18/10/21) and remembered this! brilliant!! thankyou for sharing it.. forgot the pop master jingle was so different.. (prefer it now) 🙂
Simply BRILLIANT. What a talent.
Amazing, still love this. Thanks for uploading it :)
Just seen in an interview with Rob Brydon that even Kens sister was fooled by this. But listening now you can hear Robs voice and Welsh tones. Rob is a very fast talker as to Ken who is slower.
Glad this on here. Remember hearing it live and wetting myself!
"Anita Baker you will not find, there was no flour anywhere"
Absolutely superb. I remember figuring it out when 'Ken' said about that 'Welsh bloke with the bad skin'.
I swore I wasn't going to fall for an April Fool that year - and this got me before I even got out of bed (I live in the US - I wasn't having a long lie). Thanks for the terrific edit (though it goes a bit off the rails at ~31min).

It's like Ken Bruce had a few spliffs before the the show
Absolutely brilliant! He really moved up another gear when he got towards Pop master
I've got the whole show in HQ here. One of my favourite and most clever shows ever.
Ross Patzelt can you upload the full show somewhere please ?
it should be on mixcloud
Can you please send the link for your full HD version?
@@RossPatzelt excellent thanks a lot. I did record it myself but no idea where or what I recorded it on !
Just brilliant - crying with laughter 🤣🤣
Peter Serafinowicz was doing the Terry Wogan impression.
MikeySaint859 best impression going
spot on impression
Brilliant; love the bits where he tells Lynn Bowles he's 'sitting on something big', and refers to Rob Brydon as 'the little Welsh guy with the bad skin'.....
absolutely brilliant!!
Brilliant radio. Was hillarious.
Think I'd have got it at about 1.58.
"Ehoohewooewoo...Popmaster!"
haha brilliant!
utterly classic!
Hear no green, speak no green.
It’s good
If I’d have listened I would have thought something is not quite right with Ken this morning.
Adding Coogan to the mix, as Terry Wogan, was a master stroke.
it wasnt coogan
@@RossPatzelt Peter Serefenowicz, then.
@@johnnyboy2k Steve Coogan does a better Wogan. I thought Coogan once did the Wogan show and Rob did the Ken Bruce show.
this is awesome
Genius
Thank you
Great impression very funny.
very funny, i bet lynn bowles was blushing. she does wear a cardigan.
@21.20 they asked this question on popmaster again today 1st of April 2021. Nice callback!
21:20
"Michael... Randy (not often)... Tito... Jermaine... Hilda... Sue... The Jacksons!"
I thought Ken Bruce was having a nervous breakdown on air.
Heh he yes, I remember listening to this and wondering how long it would be before he was 'quietly' carted off by the producers! Very funny and fair play to Ken for being such a good sport! :)
This was great. Rob did a remarkable job keeping this up and it was really funny.
What happens to the audio 31:27 - 32:20?
This is brilliant, but I'm sure the best bit is missing when "Ken" goes on for about a minute just mumbling and mumbling.
This was wicked
Best impersonation
The clues are all there when you listen to it now but back then???…….
01:59 cracks me up
Brilliant Rob brydon one top impressionist
Great, sounded a bit like Ken drifting into Terry Wogan at times though lol
Not Alison Steadman on Pop Master is it? Wondered if she was acting along. Husband called Mick 🤣
That Popmaster winner sounds a barrel of laughs
Rob Brydon is a great presenter and entertainer, he should be on radio more, but definitely doesn't sound like Ken 😉 great laugh though
This was gold 😂😂😂😂
I'm here after the hand over between the faux Jeremy Vine and Ken the Bruce.
Love the way Rob almost goes into Ronnie Corbett at times!
it would have been awesome but i doubt it as popmaster is very serious so doubt they would get a fake contesant on
Does sound a bit like her but no.
Goes a bit Terry Wogan in places but he fooled me at the time
you can still tell its rob brydon though. got ken's mannerisms though.
.
classic
still funny
the knob joke gave it away. too risky for the BBC.
stephen borsbey But... it was on the BBC!
Have u heard Janice and John ?
6:57 How right they were
Yer don't know happened there at the 31 min bit ?? My bad lol
If you hadn't have told me.
42:27 Terry calls in
31.41 goes back to evans
i thought that
29:21 - in 2011 he knew
"Nothing humorous about cardiac episodes."
Easily best impressionist
42:25 Terry Wogan
Can you dig it
Mock turtles
Coogans brother Martin
Is that Adam Buxton at the end doing Jeremy Vine?
Could well be!
55%... stick to the "man in The Box"....Which is amazing!
Terry sarcastic king wogan
Ken shoulda got Terrys job ,his style is the nearest & he had a show ready made for early morning. It was a damn disgrace that Evans got it, like Steve wright ,he told radio 1, rightly or wrongly to f-0ff,sorry doesn't quite cover it in the real world.Luckily both are gone.
He did do breakfast before a bit in the mid 80s
What was all that about eggs in the middle of this.
Sounds more like Wogan.
Similar but on reflection not close enough, best impersonator was Peter Serafinowicz of Terry Wogan. Rob needed a slightly deeper voice for Ken. Good on the BBC for allowing it through.
Look up wogan gets stoned. Excellent impression .
@@alanjones5786”Me love a bit o’ the old ‘eavy dub” 😂
RHLSTP...
No, his voice is not as deep as Bruce's. Wouldn't mistake him for Ken.
Ken Bruce said his sister was listening to the broadcast and rang his wife and asked if Ken was drunk ! 😅
