Couldn't wish for a better pet. ❤

George! I love it and I love your story!!!!! I grew up on a farm, and I had a horse named George (my much older sister named him, not me) and didn't understand having pet/indoor cats, since we only had barn cats. I'm now in my 50s and have 2 cats who chose to live with me (from the farm). I am very, very lucky to have them. They are mama and son - and the son, like yours, is very vocal. And bossy! Good thing someone oversees our living. :) I loved your post about your beloved George. Thank you!!

Orange and Maine Coon just seems like a fantastic combination. Big ol' chonky lug of a cat. No thoughts, head empty but probably the most affectionate cat ever.
I have a big orange smart cookie of a Maine Coon! He knows that the intercom/video doorbell situation in my flat has some connection to the door opening and him being able to go up and down the corridor outside. From his perspective, when I get a delivery or visitor the intercom makes a sound, I then go and fiddle around with the intercom in some way (answer it, talk to them, press the door open button!), and then shortly afterwards (when they’ve come up in the lift) the door gets opened! He very quickly put this sequence of events together, and decided that if he wants the front door to open, he needs to mess with the intercom, and he’ll frequently reach up and knock the handset off the wall if I refuse to open the door when he very politely asks me 😂 Last night I was watching a video on my phone in the kitchen, and in the video someone rang the doorbell! Harvey took off at a run towards the front door, even though that definitely wasn’t the direction the noise was coming from 😂
My Maine Coon at one point needed a full body shave due to matting, but once it all grew back, she never had that problem again. She had to be sedated for the procedure, but not because of her disposition (which was very sweet and tolerant), but she also needed a dental cleaning at the same time. I lost her last October. RIP Gidget..best cat I ever owned.
My condolences on your loss. It’s never easy to lose a family member like that. Also, from the short bit of info shared I would say that you were Gidget’s guardian, not her “owner”. It’s a small but very distinguished difference. An “owner” takes care of their “property”, where a guardian loves, respects, and takes care of their loved one.
I always had to get my kitty sedated to deal with her teeth, she was a street cat I picked up underweight with a collar digging into her neck, she would have grown into it. But they told me it takes a toll of their organs cus they are so small for their body size. Any time you can avoid putting a cat under, you should. Lost my girl to kidney disease, I just wish I'd had one more summer with her. I was the only one that could handle her but I dunno if I could have got her to let me brush her teeth, I never really tried. She was my satellite.
gidget is such a cute name! we had to say goodbye to my boy last year too. he had to have most of his teeth removed a few years ago. it was very disorienting for him to go to sleep, wake up and suddenly his teeth were gone! he felt a lot better after though, no more pain from rotten teeth.
One thing I've noticed about people that have that stigma against cats...it's usually because they don't understand how to properly communicate with them. Cats are not dogs. A lot of them don't like being manhandled like a dog until they know you well/completely trust you. It's all about respecting the cat's boundaries and continuing to do so throughout the cat's life just like you would a human being. In my case, even cats that hate people warm up to me very fast because I am respectful of their boundaries. It's a miracle how much good it does.
Agreed. If you have time the best way to meet a cat is to hang out in the same room and ignore it. That's polite behaviour for cats! Being too interested in a cat you've only just met can be seen as rude or even aggressive. You don't force yourself on them, you let them decide when they feel safe to approach you. I did that with a friend's cats the first time I catsat for her and they adored me afterwards, I always saw them much more often than anyone else who fed them and the more extroverted one would snuggle on my lap whenever I sat down. I like to have strong personal boundaries and need alone time as well so I get them. (This is also why people who aren't into cats often find that their friends' cats gravitate to them.)
That is very true. I got my first cat as a kitten and he scared the crud when he jumped on my ribs the first night. 20 years later, I can’t sleep without some cuddle time. But it definitely has to be his call.
I have always liked cats, and I had one as a kid. However, I have learned about their boundaries more since going for walks with my spouse and interacting with the neighbourhood kitties. He lets them come up to him and sniff his hand, and he is alert to their body language when petting them. Most cats go to him first over me.
When I got my cat home from the shelter for the first time I put his (open) crate in a corner and let him decompress as long as he needed to. After 3-4 days of adjustment, he was up on my lap constantly and he's now the biggest lovebug I've met. He was a farm cat and terrified of things like sirens at first, but now we go out for walks or drives on my scooter all the time. Cats even more than dogs need things to move at their pace, not the human's.
I miss my grandparents Maine Coon.... He was a massive sweetheart. Sadly he developed cancer and by the time anyone know about it the tumors had run rampant. He was the best teddy bear in the world and I miss him dearly. Loved that big doofus....

Love Maine Coon cats. Ours lived to 21 years old, passed this past March. And of course, Mr "no more pets" go's and finds a beautiful white belly orange coat with freckled eyes and gray paws Maine Coon kitten recently. Already at 20 lbs and not even a year old yet. LoL Great video!
My daughter acquired a rescue fluffy kitten while living in Australia. She came home to NZ not long after and the kitty immigrated too. Didn't know he was Maine Coon until he was a lot older and a lot bigger and fluffier! He lived until he gave up fighting cancer last year (2023) when he was 16. RIP Jester, what a sweetheart. Vanessa is the best I reckon ❤
Than you for what you said about cats, Vanessa! We love all animals equally but me and my family used to be the people who thought all cats were mean until we got our first pet, who was a stray Snowshoe Siamese that showed up on our doorstep. She's since passed about a year ago now and she changed our whole lives. She's my soulmate, my twin flame, my best friend, even in kitty heaven, and she's the reason I know why I was put on this earth. To care for animals and especially cats. We've had and currently have many cats of all personalities and each is such a gift. Because of her, we have a cat wall in our house that we fill with kitty decor, and we take care of any strays who come by. Our lives were flipped completely upside down in the best way possible and my god I miss her so much. RIP Bali, and Pretty Kitty, Moose, Cecil, Marmalade, and the cats of extended family who've passed. Thank you for showing us how powerful love is. I hope you're happy up there
One huge difference between cats and dogs is cats in groups practice social grooming. If you can tap in to that they can be very accepting. Of course, they don't usually dunk each other in tubs of water...
Grooming often ended up in fights between my two boys that died in 2014. I always imagined the conversation as "you licked my fur the wrong way!" or "I said 12 licks, not 14!".
Whenever I groom my girl Maine Coon in particular, she seems absolutely compelled to also groom me back 🥰 And unlike her big ginger brother only about 18lbs!), she knows I’m not going to get carried away with grooming and turn it into wrestling or biting! 😂
You say that last part, and by and large that is true. The exception was our neighbor's Siamese. He loved to swim, and babysit kittens. He would take eack kitten to the pool and plop it in the shallow end near the stairs, and teach it how to get out. Strange cat, but very safety conscious.
I was one of those people who thought I was just more of a dog person until I became a cat mom (the distribution system chose me) to a rescue. Sadly, we had to send him over the bridge over a month ago, and I'm waiting a bit before I consider another furbaby. But I can confidently say that dogs and cats both have their charms and I adore both now!
Aw, there is so much life and love and soul in those furry little bodies, we do miss them when they have to go. Oh, no worry, the distribution system knows where you are ... 😸 Could happily tell stores for an hour on the family dogs of my childhood, a runt of the litter beagle then a rescue collie. Have had cats while living out on my own in apartments & could happily tell stories on them too.
Thank you for calling out the annoying people that say they hate all cats! I never tend to trust those people, because they put zero effort into understanding the wonderful animal, and are surprised when they meet a super friendly cat lol
I used to know an annoying person who "loved" cats. We'd be walking around the neighborhood, he'd see a cat, and immediately run over and try to make friends with it. The cats always ran away. This man annoyed a lot of humans, too. He was born to be annoying, apparently.
It usually takes being forced into a relationship with 1 cat for that attitude to change. I had a rescue cat when I met my now partner. He hated cats when we moved in together. He had a day off one day and I went to work. I came home to find them asleep on the couch cuddling together and his arm scratched up. They had been playing rough together all day. His arm remained scratched up from that day on.😂
Seeing all these cat videos you make, makes me want a cat again. I had a cat, that was a "parrot" cat. By that i mean, she talked to me when i called her name and she loved to sit on my shoulder.
probably because dog people would think you're a psycho or murderer if you did. I swear they're nutbags. Thanks though, I prefer my animal that doesn't need constant walks, baths, extreme attention, and doesn't regularly smell like ugh. When I was a kid I was playing with some puppies and realized they were eating their own turds. And then sometime not much later I saw a dog in the street eating out of a baby diaper. The cuteness factor was mostly gone after that for me. I don't hate them but definitely not a fan most of the time.
My beloved Maine Coon ginger boy Pip passed away two weeks ago. What a joy it was to see this fellow chill out during the whole grooming session. My cat was such a challenge when being groomed!😾😹Each cat is so different! Loved how you approached the matted fur problem while keeping the outer coat. We used to do that as best we could too with Pip.
I am the owner of the World's Smallest Maine Coon (only 13 lb) Unfortunately, we learned the hard way that we couldn't keep up with brushing her, so now she has a bi-monthly maintenance appointment with our groomer (after they told us she needed a lion cut due to how matted she had gotten) We give her a daily brushing regimen (along with her DSH brothers), which she thankfully tolerates
Even thought I used to brush my 25 pound Maine Coon, he still would mat like this. Their fur ( or at least mine was) mat easily, but was probably the best behaved kitty I’ve ever had
My childhood Maine Coon *never* got a mat. His fur was longer than this cat's, but he *lived* to be brushed, combed & hose-vacuumed! He took "showers" in the rain, never bathed. Rest in peace, Moider!

Once you understand how cats communicate and how it differs from dogs you'll fall in love with them. They have a stigma of being less loving and that's just not true. They're so loving of their people.
So very true. Every time I've met a dog person who dislikes cats, a bit of conversation reveals that the dog person is not great at remembering that cats communicate and think differently from dogs. That "wagging" tail was not an invitation to pet the cat!
Indeed they do. That's why we have 16 of them. 8 indoors and 8 ferals that we had spayed and neutered that live in a garage I heat for them and back porch I enclose with panals in winter so the less socialable umong them stay warm in heated houses. I like dogs also , but at my age I prefer cats because cats can fend for themselves if I drop dead. Cats are predators and dogs are scavengers and I don't want them to have to scavenger to survive. Regards !😉
Once you understand their body language and how they communicate, it's easy to tell that cats are just as loving as dogs in their own way. It's just that iirc the wildcats our domestic cats are descended from live in colonies composed of multiple families that aren't genetically related. As opposed to wolves, whose pack structure is more akin to a human nuclear family. So cats' way of thinking and caring about their owners is less in the vein of human parents or family, and more as members of the colony.
As someone who is owned two Maine coons who would not tolerate being brushed. I am most impressed by his lay back attitude. Maine coons are so much fun and it's like more than a dog. It's almost like up human.

My Maine Coon Frankie weighed 38lbs. He was built like a tank and the size of toddler. He let me do whatever he needed done. I miss him. He went over the Rainbow Bridge in 2017.

Yes they are, Thomas was a big lover boy. The only time I ever saw him get aggressive was when I had him out in my front yard and the neighbor's 50-lb dog took a run at him. It didn't go well for the dog.

He just turned the Rage Cage into the mildly annoyed cage ! What a sweetheart

how nice to hear about thanks for sharing him with us😊
I bet he loved you all❤
Choosing between fight and flight, he literally chose flight! 🤣 Good boy! Considering his size, this groom could be very challenging if he decided to be feisty.
Fight or Flight? Nah Wall, wall is best choice.
and when flight didn't work he chose the third option...

My husband grew up with only dogs because his mother is allergic to cats, but he has always wanted a cat and so for his 30th birthday, I took him to the shelter and he fell in love with an 11yo ginger cat named George. We've had him for more than 5 years now and he is just the best. Incredibly affectionate, easiest pet in the world for first-time cat owners, great with kids....... and extremely vocal, lol. Couldn't wish for a better pet. ❤
I'm glad your hubby finally got his kitty!! And thank you for adopting a senior kitty! ❤❤❤
@@JBOD We went in specifically to get a senior cat, knowing they don't get adopted as easily as younger cats. Give him some good final years. But George is still super healthy for an almost-17-year-old cat. He can still move around with no issues and doesn't need any medication. We are truly blessed with him. ❤️
Thank you!!
So sweet! Senior cats are great for first-time cat owners and anyone looking for a more relaxed cat. They're usually mellow, and you can know what you're getting with their personalities and habits.
@@abaigealduda2756 Aww, thank you! I read your comment with a smile on my face. It's so amazing when cats choose their owner. They knew they'd be in good hands with you.
You see so many cats that are overwhelmed by keeping their fur clean and groomed. My American Shorthair was fastidious. I hope people buying or rescuing a long-haired cat understand that they have to step up and help their cat with the grooming. I love your cat videos!!
Bet it's lovely that the owners can see how caring you are to there fluff ball❤
I have an orange Maine Coon 🥰 He is 99% air and hair, not a brain cell to be found, but he is my fluffy orange angel baby 🥰
Orange and Maine Coon just seems like a fantastic combination. Big ol' chonky lug of a cat. No thoughts, head empty but probably the most affectionate cat ever.
@@vicroc4 yes, that's why I say mine is just 99% air and hair lol
Harvey took off at a run towards the front door, even though that definitely wasn’t the direction the noise was coming from 😂
@@EmmaVB82 Ah, he's hogging the brain cell. XD
@@EmmaVB82 there's always that occasional orange cat that hoards all the brain cells lol
I thought I was a dog person until I had a Tonkinese stay with me for a month. So 4 cats and 30 years later, I’m totally owned by any cat I meet.
Oooh they are great! I have two Tonkinese and Burmese half brothers and they are the best! 💜
Tonks are awesome 💯😎
3:15 I love this moment where he completely ignores what's happening and taps lightly interested the nail clipper! 😂❤
What a gentleman he is! And so brave. He is a credit to his breed and to his family.
Exactly. Cats are boring and rude to you until you become one of their people. If you don’t put some effort in you will only ever see boring assholes.
Maine Coons are the best!!! This big orange guy was so patient, even after his great escape.
He looked so confused while being bathed, bless him!
Mine gets that wth look too. I don't think they're use to feeling the water on their skin though that thick coat lol

It looked like he was trying to remember if he may have done something bad that made him deserve this. 😂

I think he was feeling the immediate relief, that's why he was so calm.
He's so sweet 🥹 Thanks for making these videos btw. Really helps me with my depression ❤️
😂😂😂
Whenever I groom my girl Maine Coon in particular, she seems absolutely compelled to also groom me back 🥰 And unlike her big ginger brother only about 18lbs!), she knows I’m not going to get carried away with grooming and turn it into wrestling or biting! 😂
You say that last part, and by and large that is true. The exception was our neighbor's Siamese. He loved to swim, and babysit kittens. He would take eack kitten to the pool and plop it in the shallow end near the stairs, and teach it how to get out. Strange cat, but very safety conscious.

I'm so glad she called out dog people who say they don't like cats, because it's so true. You never hear cat people say they hate dogs. 😄
probably because dog people would think you're a psycho or murderer if you did.

Once you understand how cats communicate and how it differs from dogs you'll fall in love with them. They have a stigma of being less loving and that's just not true. They're so loving of their people.
So true
Regards !😉
Yep
Once you understand their body language and how they communicate, it's easy to tell that cats are just as loving as dogs in their own way. It's just that iirc the wildcats our domestic cats are descended from live in colonies composed of multiple families that aren't genetically related. As opposed to wolves, whose pack structure is more akin to a human nuclear family. So cats' way of thinking and caring about their owners is less in the vein of human parents or family, and more as members of the colony.
