- Franz Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 in C Sharp Minor".
It is most likely undeniable that you have heard this piece of music somewhere at one time or another.
It is perhaps the most prominent piece of classical (romantic, actually) music featured in animated cartoons across the years.
(either that or Rossini's "Largo al Factotum". It's a tough call).
And in honor of Franz Liszt's 200th birthday (2 days late, but whatever), I have assembled a compilation of a couple cartoons that make use of good ol' "Number Two".
And I say "a couple" because these are probably not even half. You really have no idea how much of a trademark this song was to classic cartoons until you actually try to hunt them down.
Now, let the anvils fall and dynamite explode!
This song never left my head, and I can never find it because I didn't know the name, it's like it was only in my subconscious.
Thank you so much for saving my childhood.
It is a great piece. I like the fact that so many cartoons used it. No better way to introduce a child into classical music.
Hungarian Rhapsody no.2
Philippe I know the feeling. I'm looking for the name of the song that the mouse plays at the end of the Looney Tunes episode Rhapsody rabbit. Like as in 20 years I've wanted to know. And I would love to know who composed that piece. It was all the time portrayed as the " super hard to play, so badly hard your fingers tied in knots and your face turned colors" song and my piano and music teacher played it as a kid. Won awards internationally. Kinda ashamed I forgot but I abandoned music and lost a lot of knowledge

I feel like WB cartoon wastes time with the "Franz Liszt? Never heard of him" and shooting the audience jokes, whereas T&J get straight into the music and do a better job of matching music to animation.
The way youre describing it, it doesnt seem like youre a die hard fan if WB didn't do there whole poking fun of famous/legendary characters like Franz Liszt then it wouldn't be WB or Bugs Bunny, its suppose to be funny. if you wanted a music video then you should know a cartoon like Looney Tunes isn't gonna give you that.
I am a huge fan of WB. Both cartoons are of a very high quality, but while I feel the joke of Bugs shooting the audience member falls flat (and not to mention out of character for Bugs) the Tom & Jerry cartoon actually out Looney-Tunes Looney Tunes. It felt like a classic I.Freleng short with his knack of matching the music to the actions.
I don't know why you said I should watch a music video when matching music to animation is a staple of some of the greatest WB shorts such as the Rabbit ot Seville for instance. It's just in this case the T&J short did it better in my view.
Also the Tom & Jerry dynamic just works better than Bugs and his rival here. They could have improved the WB cartoon a little by bringing back A.Flea to be the antagonist as that would have made a bit more sense that this random pair.

Donald vs Daffy in Who Framed Roger Rabbit is one of my favorite scenes from that film lol.
I love with Tom and Jerry the way that Tom is just trying to play music and Jerry is harassing him and it all goes to the tune of the music, it just flows so well.
About the shown part you're right. But earlier on in that cartoon you can see that it begins with Tom playing the piano Jerry was sleeping in and hence got waken up, then Jerry sees Tom playing and enjoying this while acting as a conductor. If this doesn't count as a harassment, then Tom did the first harassment.
Tom bothered Jerry first. Jerry was just enjoying the music and Tom started messing with him.
(This is actually a really weird thing I've noticed on the internet. A LOT of people seem to think Jerry usually starts the conflict, and that just isn't true. I have no idea why that seems to be so widely believed.)

It’s true trying to mind his own business and Jerry comes to mess with him for no reason did you just obviously you’ve never seen Tom and Jerry because everybody who’s actually watch Tom and Jerry knows that Jerry starts to conflict not Tom
@@jamircox8458 Yeah, literally none of that is true, dude. Watch the cartoon again. Jerry is not bothering Tom at all. He's just lying there listening to the music. Tom flicks him away, and then bashes the piano keys on his head. Only THEN does Jerry start trying to get back at him.
And I've been watching the Tom & Jerry shorts my entire life. Seen nearly every short. Tom is the bully in the majority of them. Not all, but the majority. That's just a fact. It's not debatable.

The cartoon of 1:16 is rhapsody in rivets it was realized in december 6 1941 and today is december 6 2017 and the cartoon is now 76 years oh and it was one day before pearl habor attack

the Cat Concerto is one of the best animated shorts ever made. good lord it is brilliant in it's directing and how it's put together.
I hope this piece gets included in modern cartoons, as well.
I noticed this because i grew up on all of these cartoons, I didnt realise it was this prevalent though. i wonder how it got this way..... all I know is that I love this song because of this repetition of hearing it as a kid. thanks for this video, really made my day
One of my favourite memories was attending the very first (it was actually Bugs' 50th - shhh! - birthday, and 'he' was accompanied by a huge 50+piece orchestra.
When I was little, my father 'only listened to classical', and - though I didn't run out and buy the discs, I DI D learn to appreciate it, and a HUGE part of this...LEARNING, was thanks to the 'rabbit'.
Bugs' influenced me, and I'm certain MANY others, who'd never have otherwise been exposed to classical, and other musical styles which weren't 'au courrant'.
A HUGE thanks goes to the music maestro of Warner Bros. The man behind the rabbit, the one and ONLY Mr Carl Stalling.
Cartoons of today are NOTHING like they were, and HAD been - they were made for ALL ages.
Yes, their definitely was some humour in the Loony Toons, et al, which was there FOR adults, but, as a kid, it didn't mean a thing.
Today's (pathetic excuse at) cartoons are things which literally are so 'safe', so sanitised, that - unless one's literally 2, who'd WANT to watch it?
Bugs, and ALL the greats (I can't name them all) were, and ALWAYS will be for kids.
And teens.
And adults.
And last, and NOT the least; seniors (we're all gonna be one, one day. Might as well laugh).
I have Hungarian Rhapsody on my iPhone, and when it plays, it brings a smile to my face, as I think back, and imagine 'Number 2''.
One of my favorite bits of classical music.
I've never known that many animations based on Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (S. 244, No. 2) were made in the early-mid 20th century -- before that, I've only listened to Marc-André Hamelin's performance (in 1997).
P.S.: I wish I could make a fan animation: Doraemon playing this piece at the recital, much more serious than those shown above.

Finally located it! For some weird reason, I thought this was by Rachmaninoff and not Liszt. Have heard this piece in so many cartoons (Rhapsody in Rivets comes to my mind). Thanks for uploading:).

I think this song was a major influence for Freddie Mercury in writing Bohemian Rhapsody. Both songs transcend being a song and turns more into an experience. They both have a similar feel. Highs and lows. Fast and slow and everything changing from one beat to the next and using moments of silence after thunderous music. Both are masterpieces.
I was particularly glad to see the Woody Woodpecker clip in there. I had no idea it existed until I happened to be watching a show one day and saw the short!

Ar7wen i originally meant the musical piece "the typewriter" where a typewriter is actually used as the main instrument, but yeah that's also cool too

Pretty well done, but considering the myriad of cartoons and animations that have used this, perhaps redoing it so the song actually flows as a complete (or nearly complete) song instead of chopping it up like that? That would take this from entertaining to phenomenal.

The two gangster s in the Woody Woodpecker sequence are exactly the same character design as the gangsters in a Daffy Duck cartoon - I think it was "Fried Yeggs".

Yes indeed, no classical music theme will ever stand the test of time like ol' #2. My favorite example here would probably be either "Rhapsody Rabbit" or the audio clip from "Daffy's Rhapsody". And Y'know, now that there's a cartoon based off that song, you could update this with video footage from DR.

My favorite cartoon was the one with the construction work for the Empire State Building. A close second would be Tom and Jerry's.

Being one to answer my own question, the WB cartoon with the building construction to the Hungarian Rhapsody was "Rhapsody in Rivets" (1941).

It's the same song, Hungarian Rhapsody no.2 in C# Minor.
The part the mouse plays is the ending to it.
