Fun fact: Unlike Rhapsody Rabbit, the animation for Tom's finger placements in Cat Concerto actually hit the correct notes.
I could partially imagine that as Bugs walked on the piano. As for Tom, that's sheer professionalism from the producers, as well as immense respect for their audience. Especially if you take into account this is targetted at children. That's love :)
Well there are certain moments when its not acurrate and the animation blends in with the context in which its made for. For kids. 2:53 is an example, but yeah there are parts where its true. I cant imagine how hard was it to animate something that smoothly in the 1940s. Wow

I like how the animators focused on different things. Bugs, he's the show, so they animated him wonderfully. Tom, the interaction between him and Jerry is the show, and that's what they focused.
Tom also focused on playing the correct notes
Bugs is animated like how the music feels like while listening to it, while Tom and Jerry are animated according to how the piano needs them to move.
Still, Tom hit the correct notes which was insane.
And I think that's why Cat Concerto is ultimately funnier, since there's already a history between the two, and the entire piece has them fighting against each other *using* the piano.
Watching Bugs bunny and Tom n Jerry as a 90s kid did not prepare me to associate them as cartoons from the 40's.

It's strange that you people didn't know that, because the openings do have the dates. In fine print, but they do. In English, but they do. And in Roman numbers, but they do. And I don't know where you guys are from, but I'm from a third world country and even here we studied Roman numbers in school as early as at 7yo. And don't give me the foreign language excuse, because Roman numbers are universal too. It's impossible that I was the only child paying attention and absorving as much information as I could.

@@jayminyoel7911 Yes. but a good animation can also be noticed by accuracy and realism. Usually in animation, the piano notes are animated unrealistically to save time and money. It takes a lot of effort to be super accurate with the notes.

I really enjoyed how they didn't talk in tom and jerry but rather expressed their emotions with music. Sadly that's changed over time.

It’s something both studios did actually. Loony Toons did have dialogue, but both studios lead artists explained that they relied a lot on facial expressions for both comedic effect and portraying the characters emotions.
They did talk, but very very rarely.

Massive props to the animators of The Cat Concerto. They animated most of Tom's fingers correctly in tune with the music, and they still did a really good job in the "cartoon" side of it. They really struck the balance between detail and humour. Even on the internal shots like at 1:03, they still animate it as accurately as possible until they have to switch to "cartoon" with the hammers picking Jerry up and such.

They came out at relatively the same time and if you think about it, I'm sure Looney Tunes would more likely copy Tom and Jerry. Why would a rabbit be feuding with a mouse in a piano? It just makes more sense that this would be a Tom and Jerry story. Also RR seems a bit more hollow than CC.

I always felt Tom won the battle. Jerry wore him out but he hit that last note before collapsing that’s dedication.

The Cat Concerto is one of the few episodes where I’m 100% team Tom not 80% Jerry, 20% Tom
There's episodes like Cat Fishin' where I'm 100% Team Jerry cuz the episode literally starts off with Tom using Jerry as bait. I'm also 100% Team Jerry on episodes like "The Zoot Cat" and "Cassanova Cat," essentially any episode that opens with Jerry clearly being the victim.

Rhapsody rabbit was just a short about bugs playing piano. The mouse just steals his thunder at the which is supposed to be funny because bugs was showing off the whole time it wasn’t meant to be a battle between two characters like the concerto cat
I have to go with Tom and Jerry. The animation looks so much smoother and cleaner. The silence that Tom and Jerry is known for really helps the viewer absorb the song. Also Cat and mouse make more sense than a rabbit and a mouse

The real pianist for Cat Concerto was Walter Scott Bradley, who also did the arrangement. He was the head of MGMs Animation Music Department. He scored and arranged ALL of the MGM cartoons produced from 1937 (when MGM opened its Animation Studio) to 1957 (when it was closed). On all of the cartoons Directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbara (so all of the classic Tom & Jerry cartoons) Bradley worked closely with William Hanna, to get the timing just right. He was a staff musician for Disney (1929), with Ub Iwerks (1930-34), music director for Harman-Ising (who produced cartoons for MGM prior to 1937), and, from 1937, with MGM. Scored more than 300 cartoons, highlighting the antics of Tom & Jerry, Droopy, Barney Bear, Screwy Squirrel, etc.

No kidding. When I was younger I made the assumption that Tom & Jerry was something more modern. Imagine mine and others surprise when we discover the first cartoon was made in 1940.

You know what’s crazy… is how old these animations are! So flawless and beautiful! I’ve seen them already but I would have never guessed that they’d be this old!
40s to 60s was the golden age of Cartoons/Animation.
That's because they were used as short films to warm up movie audiences before the feature film. They could take the time and effort to make them like this, and they had to since they would be shown on a theater screen. Animation for television demanded much more content in much less time.
The Superman cartoon from the 1940s was also superbly animated. It would be a major inspiration to the 90s DCAU. the only time a super hero cartoon was given the same level of artistry again was with Batman the Animated Series and the cartoons that followed it.
Now I wonder what an old cartoon, in your mind, is supposed to look like? When I think crappy animation I think 1970s Hanna Barbera.

In case you're wondering, at 2:30 the object Tom hits Jerry with is a tuning wrench. They are normally not kept inside of pianos, especially concert pianos, but if you're really lazy or just completely inattentive you might leave one.

My grandmother was a piano teacher when she was young and she used to tell me that what Tom plays was pretty accurate in fact. I'm not saying that I didnt believe her, but its nice to see that this "theory" was indeed true.
As a pianist, it seems pretty accurate. Though I will say that the parts that show only the hammers (the inside of the piano) instead of him playing the piano, are not at all accurate.
Tom and Jerry had such fluid animation, I would not have thought it to be from 1947.

Hanna Barbera studios helped popularize "Limited Animation" in TV cartoons since it's way cheaper and faster to make.
These other type of older cartoons were often made to be premiered at cinema theaters, therefore they had very big production values, hence the extremely smooth animation.

Bugs Bunny’s version was an indeed comedic yet impressive take, while Tom and Jerry’s was a majestic yet amusing take. Both of their jazzy breakdowns, I’ll admit, were real genius. Tom went as accurate as he could, and Bugs went a bit more outside lol
Old cartoons like this is probably why I recognize classical music.
In my opinion, both of them did great on their own. Bugs and Tom are one of my favorite cartoon characters
Despite all the issues Tom had to face, he did far better in playing the piano as compared to Bugs, who showed off. And Cat Concerto is something I remember more than Rhapsody Rabbit.

The Cat Concerto is the best in my opinion. The animation is so smooth & feels real, quality is overwhelming and the jokes always get me laughing.
I remember seeing cat concerto as a kid and I loved it. Had no idea how old it was, thats what I love about these cartoons, theyre timeless and classic.

During my childhood, I always side with Jerry and thought Tom was the one being evil in the whole series😂 but sometimes feel sorry when Tom got hurt. When I rewatched it, I realized Jerry was actually the one being really annoying here😂
That seems to be the case with a loooot of us. As kids, we root for Jerry cause he's the small, adorable mouse. As adults, we root for Tom cause he's gotta deal with bullshit from Jerry. 😆

I will say as a pianist, the part where Bugs turns the page and just sees musical nonsense got a legit chuckle out of me. But overall I prefer the Tom and Jerry cartoon.

I'm a classical musician who started piano young. It was always such a fun thing for me to see my favorite cartoons playing Liszt. I still think back on those cartoons every so often

I can actually see Bugs and Tom side by side playing the piano with all sorts of pieces to gain the audiences respect, then Jerry and the other mouse thwart the two by making it intense for both of them.
If they got Tom and Jerry into roger rabbit, they should have done that instead of Donald and daffy

Friz Freleng, the director for Rhapsody Rabbit, was apparently gobbed-smacked that Hanna Barbara and he had hit upon the same idea as him, at the same time, he and they had both produced their respective cartoons for their respective studios during the same year and both were shown at the same Academy Awards in 1947.
Friz had the harder fight given that a rabbit fighting a mouse does not make as much sense as a cat fighting a mouse.
Yeah the mouse bit never really fit Rhapsody Rabbit. Would've been a more "Looney Toons-y" joke to pan to a Toon-y Franz Liszt or a Hungarian Giant Rabbit opposite him bashing out the final lines instead.

When you see both of these classic cartoons, it is rather clear that for accuracy and history of the characters involved, Tom and Jerry is the clear winner here. You must remember, Bugs Bunny never had a situation like this. His confrontations usually involved being hunted by Elmer Fudd or harassed by a host of other characters (Examples include Daffy Duck, the Tazmainan Devil, et al.) so Bugs went all out for the slapstick aspect in this cartoon short. Therefore, while very much the same, these two cartoons are vastly different. Enjoying one more than the other is immaterial as long as you see the angles that each went from.
Now, If you take it from the standpoint of the adversarial situation, again, Tom and Jerry have this won going away as they have had this relationship for many years as mentioned before and Bugs, if he had Elmer or even Daffy causing mischief, might have made it closer. But, alas for Bugs, they gave him a mouse in an attempt to show a bit of mayhem.
In short, enjoy both for what they are and don't worry about who was better.
It's even rare to see Bugs being defeated by someone or something since he usually wins all the time. This would be his first time being defeated by some unnamed rat.
I think that supports the premise that, despite being earlier, Looney Tunes stole the idea from Tom and Jerry. I think T & J started it but had a snag in the production schedule, so theirs came later, and Bugs stole it in the first place. As you say, putting him with a mouse is so much out of left field, and the confrontation doesn't really happen organically.

As much as I love both, I still feel like Tom and Jerry has a bit more depth to their animation. Both are golden shows though!!! Nothing will beat these two!
At least Tom didn't have to shoot somebody before playing, lol.

That pinky stretch from Tom at 3:09 always made me laugh. And I love the ragtime section after that
The ability to turn PIANO NOTES into visual gags is amazing
First time I see both side by side like this. Quite the eye-opener. Even though there's only a year seperating both shorts, Cat Concerto definitely comes out on top in almost every category. The animation, the gags, the timing...it was so well thought out compared to Bugs' short.
They actually came out same year, competing for the same award
Those were real cartoon, you can clearly see at this day how much effort they used and how much they loved their work ❤
The fact they animated them playing the peice semi-accurate enough to be believable is impressive. You don't see that amount of dedication nowadays
