It's always nice to see people keep old good quality units in service. Because we all know that saying they just don't make them like they used to

also hear some more great tips for anyone who's trying to correct fire safety issues in regards to emergency lighting or exit signs we have ...
five different types of emergency lighting systems and pieces of equipment.
    we have...
    emergency battery lights
    we have exit signs.
    we have combo units
which is what this video had in it. that's emergency light plus exit sign.
    we have emergency ballasted lights
which is where a standard LED light fixture or fluorescent light fixture has a battery backup with a separate ballast to bring the voltage up from the battery voltage up to usable fluorescent voltage.
and we have emergency battery pack with remote heads,
which means the light part is not in the same spot as the unit is. typically the light part is located outside but the actual power supply where the battery is.. is inside .
last but not least, we have the emergency battery inverter unit.
emergency battery inverter unit runs at full 120 volts for any type of light fixture. so regular light fixtures and AC only exit signs can run on these. and it runs a lot of them .
The parts of emergency battery inverter unit are The transfer printed circuit board controller the battery and a inverter that converts direct current to light outlet current.( AC )alternating current. the same thing you use for your outlet to plug in a lamp.
now the troubleshoot these types of equipment. there are three basics
you push the test button. it doesn't come on. something's wrong with it
or you do your annual inspection which is in the United States 90 minutes
and Canada. it is 30 minutes I believe....
and in the United Kingdom it is 3 hours.
if the unit does not pass inspection but the unit comes on( lights up )or if it's an exit sign and it stays lit when you press the test button until it dies even before it's not supposed to die. so before the 90 minutes is up or whatever the place you're in then yes, it's probably the battery, but if the exit sign does not look like it's lit and it's an LED exit sign, it's time for a new unit same thing for emergency lights. if they don't light up whatsoever and no indicator light, it's time for new unit. unless you have a expensive unit that has a separate transformer .
then take your multimeter look at the transformer. see what the voltage is that comes out of it and test the voltage from the transformer also check the amperage . as long as it's separate it's replaceable. also some units test themselves. not all units test themselves but some do. some also have an alarm that will go off when the unit is not functioning correctly or up to code (not running long enough during power outage ). some to most of the nice units have a battery alarm when you press the test button. a buzzer will sound notifying you that the battery is out. Hope this helps!
also, remember there are no such thing as dimmers or persuasive infrared motion sensors or also known as motion sensors on exit signs, emergency lights. from what I was taught, it's against the building code fire Marshall finds out about it. you're going to jail for it because it's illegal. it's considered tampering with fire safety equipment. exit sign should be lit 24/7 as long as it's a type that is lit so that should be most of them if not all of. in fact it's supposed to be all of them . You're supposed to be even to see it in broad daylight with a bunch of windows in full sun and tell it's lit. if you don't tell that it's lit, can't tell it's not up the code and it needs to be replaced if it's LED if it's fluorescent or incandescent you can just replace the bulbs. emergency lights are the same way by the way when they come on cuz the power went out. both types of emergency lighting equipment has to be a particular brightness because they're made to light up the way when the power gets cut off in the room is smoky from a fire. without the equipment working correctly your occupants and possibly you will get trapped in the building because in commercial buildings the smoke gets thick because there are no smoke release systems because they want to smother the fire.

Excuse me, I think your Fire Exit Sign is upside down.

Where did you find the replacement batteries? thanks! Side question, why would the batteries be used up if the sign is plugged in?

If power is lost then the battery can keep the sign lit up
