The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoff...
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.

The fact that the family of a former staff member that worked at Hinchingbrooke Castle still have letters from Alberta is a testament of how well loved the countess was. It would be interesting to see the thoughts and reflections of other former staff members as well as it gives you an ideal of what life was like then and your stepping back in time. I hope there was a record of what was sold at the auction and what you have been able to retrieve back. The records will show of how much was lost.........

To see they found through the photograph's happy times through war, and how Alberta was as a person. I find myself crying a lot as we go through Alberta's journey with you, but not of sadness, but of how we all couldn't know this woman. Julie, I can't wait to read your dissertation. Julie, the more I see your old ancestor, the more convinced I am that she has been restored. Her face is all wrong and her ruff really seems to have been retouched. I hope I am wrong, and that you can get someone to check her out, and find I am wrong. Love the videos.😊

Do Luke's parents no longer live at Mapperton?
I would love to join you for the needlework class. I've been sewing by hand for 60 years, since I was 5, but I recently got a new puppy and he is 10 weeks old tomorrow so he takes a lot of time and supervision. Maybe, if you do this again, I'll be able to join you.
