From a hardware store, you'll also need a 1/4"-20 nut or coupler, 1/4" rubber washer and a 1" Cushion Clamp/Wire Loom Clamp (be careful here, these vary wildly - the one I found at Lowes was good, as is the one at Home Depot - you want one that has longer tabs/flanges or whatever they are called).
I've got an update to this video coming in a couple days that includes power information for the a7III/a7RIII/a9 along with more information for the a6300, a6400 and a6500. I'll link it here as soon as it posts. I'll also be covering NAB 2019 a little differently next week, with my Osmo Pocket click.dji.com/ABsscPLXg-2W8oO7c8be2A?pm=link and Insta360 One X amzn.to/2HJiIKL .
I have used my a6300 with an external 20000mAh powerbank and it worked fine, but after the firmware upgrade something strange has happend with my external power. The internal battery goes as usual to 0 and then the camera shuts off. It seems not to take any juice from the external battery in the ratio 2/3 to 1/3. The first thing I checked was the menu to see that external USB power was turned on, and it was. Before the latest firmware (1.10) it lastet much longer. Now I use instead an Indipro with 4 Canon batteries and a dummy battery. Runs for hours and I can hot swap batteries whenever I like. Love the camera :-).
Great video Jeff. My solution to the over heating issue is to place dry ice between the body and the monitor making sure the dry ice is in a plastic baggie.
This is the best video I have seen regarding the two of the three shortcomings of the a6300 and with a rig there isn't a drawback...the other "fix" videos didn't help at all for me. Now you just need to publish some tips on the silly bad rolling shutter. Thanks again!
Thanks for the info! Haven't heard anyone else mention that the internal battery still drains slowly when recording video even with external usb power. Too bad the camera can't be powered completely by usb!
What external battery is good for the dummy battery? Tx. Also, suppose one drilled vent holes in the dummy battery?
Just the info I was looking for. Awesome. Now if we could just come up with a fix for the screen dimming when shooting in 4k.
really nice explanation, thanks
Leaving opened battery door may cool things a bit (aside moving display away from the camera).
So I want to use this camera via HDMI as a webcam/livestream camera. Can I hook up the USB to it and a wall outlet and run this infinitely? The HDMI will be outputting 108060, and my room is like 68°. Should I point a small fan at the camera to keep it cool? And can it stay powered in for hours at a time?
While you could run it off of a dummy battery forever, it may eventually overheat... Although a fan generally prevents that. Consider the Panasonic g7. It's cheap, 4k, and doesn't overheat.
So if I’m running it for 2-5 hours for streams, and occasionally a 12-24 hour stream here and there, it should be fine? Also can I only do a dummy battery or will a USB work to maintain power?
@@HawksNestYT With cooling, probably fine. However no, it is not possible to power the camera exclusively through the USB port. It only provides an large portion of the power. Technically, using a dummy battery and a 5v to 7.4v buck converter, you *could* power it by USB... but at that point you may as well plug it into the wall.
@@Photonarmy With a fully charged battery, outputting at 1080p60, with a USB plugged into the camera and a wall adapter, how long do you think the cam would last? Trying to decide if a dummy battery that plugs into a wall is worth it or not
Super useful. They don't sell the Aukey PB-N37 battery here in Sweden so was thinking of getting the more powerful TP-Link TL-PB10400. Just need to figure out a way to attach it to the camera though. ^^
Hello very interesting and informative, I didn't fully understand what would be the better between a power supply via usb port and the same power supply via dummy battery. Which solution would cause less overheat? Thanks
Does the speed of the SD card make a difference on overheating issues?
While there are cards that consume slightly more or less power while writing, the differences are largely negligible in the Sony. Sony cameras use a USB 2.0 interface which limits all cards to roughly 35 MB/s. Had they gone with USB 3.0 for a higher write speed, SD card power consumption and heat would likely become a factor. Personally I use Sandisk extreme (just extreme) Microsd cards. They're cheap and just as good as anything else due to the write speed limitations.
QD 185-TY LED 18650 Battery Charger / Power Bank no longer available on Amazon. Any suggestions of another power supply with variable DC output?
this is very helpful, thank you
Forgot to say that I liked your videos:-) Subscribed now!
How long of a battery life do you get with the usb power on the hotshoe and how long with the dummy battery option?
i have the a7s and with the battery grip and two internal batteries i can get about 2 hrs 10 minutes for record time before the batteries run out.
this is with the open memories hack installed to remove the recording time limit.
would there be a problem using one of these dummy packs if you wanted 3-4 hrs continuous recording time??
a useful product might be a dummy battery that has a small fan that sucks in cold air to keep that side of the camera cold
where can I bay this converter power pack?
Hi, considering the fact that you can only record for 29mins max at-a-go, when you say 45mins continuous recording time, do you means 29mins(stop recording) + 16mins(after hitting record again)?
Thank you
Lukman Lawal in my case I was stopping restarting, but there is a hack that can be performed that allows unlimited record time.
oh I see, heard about the hack but haven't tried it yet. Have you heard of any side effects?
Thank you
Hi!!! IS there any risk to damage the camera with the power bank and dummy battery? Any power bank is good to use or not? do you think 5A USB power bank will be good?
Thomas L. There is always risk. With the dummy battery, you have to use a power source that provides in the neighborhood of 7.5 volts. Definitely no more than 8.5. volts and no less than 7.2V. Standard USB power source are always 5 volts... So that won't work with the dummy battery without a buck converter also in the mix. I will be releasing a video on that soon.
thanks a lot!!!
so if i plugin the 5volts directly it will damage the camera or simply won't work? you meant the only in case the volts are more than 8.5 can damage the camera?
Will the Aukey work w/ a6000 ?
is it possible to record 120 fps from the Sony A6300 hdmi on the Atomos Ninja Assassin?
I don't believe so, unfortunately. Though surely this would just be a firmware fix from Atomos to allow it..
+DOD Media actually its the Sony a6300 that don't provide 120fps HDMI
Oh right! Then in that case it would surely be a firmware fix from Sony! :-)
Unless there's some hardware limitation that prevents 120fps through HDMI?
I think you're on to something with the voltage @ 8.5v resulted in less heat. The camera will use 6.5w no matter what so less volts = more amps.
I also found my camera will overheat quicker when battery is low, below 7.2v
I decided to power my SONY A5100 with a 20v DeWalt lithium drill battery! I will have a buck converter lower the voltage to 8.4v of course and follow my similar use of a DeWalt battery here:
ruclips.net/video/PQTAForw_I0/видео.html
Thanks for your video. It has re enforced my suspicion of low battery voltage worsening the overheat problem.
Could I use the Aukey power bank with a dummy battery in order to eliminate ANY heat that the Sony battery might be generating (even at low amp draw)? I would just need a cable with USB on one end and the round jack on the other, like this:
www.amazon.com/Barrel-Jack-Adapter-5-5mm-5-5x2-1mm/dp/B01EHG9SJG/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1471054197&sr=1-1&keywords=5.5x2.1mm+usb
Do you foresee any issue with this setup? Extra wire length isn't a problem. I'd just zip tie it up.
Can I use aukey qc 3.0 5000mAh PB-T12?
Agus Rindarjo with the right adapter, sure
thanks Jeff
Overheating is not a problem if you do this ruclips.net/video/juO0Uojw8l8/видео.html the fix is at 28:50min. I did this to all my sony cams. Very easy to do. The problem is in that stupid heat sink {which I complete removed} and the lack of thermal pad. I run for hours with no heat issues. Easy fix - hope that helps!
Apparently the guy who made that video got an a6300 and is still trying to figure out just what is overheating. According to him, the a6300 has a better heat dissipation mechanism inside by default. I'm still waiting to see what he comes up with.
I actually got the materials to try and do this on my a6300 but found out there's at least one extra screw that I can't get to, and was told that there is some kind of heat dissipating material in the a6300 already. Not sure if I should just sell the this and go for the a6500 at this point.
When a car has a manufacturing defect, the brand collects that vehicle and corrects the problem with no financial charges to the owner.
Sony should do the same with their A series cameras.
I bought a Sony A 6000 and with a temperature of only 22 degrees celcius and only recording in full hd, the camera stopped recording after 5 to 8 minutes due to over heating.
This is ridiculous and unacceptable.
If Sony has any respect for its customers, then it should do the same as the car manufacturers do. Collect the cameras and correct the problem.
