Pushing The GTX 1080 To 8K...

- Gaming at 8K doesn't make too much sense even with a top tier RTX 30 series graphics card. It makes even less sense with a half decade old flagship GTX GPU, but I couldn't help but wonder if it was actually possible. Could we hit decent performance figures at 4320p in any of the latest games?
Thanks for watching :)
Metal Gear Solid 5 is worth checking at 8k. I remember years ago that 4k was achievable on a 1060 I think so 8k 30fps maybe possible on a 1080.
The optimization was very good despite the lacking of graphics options
Can say the same about Death Stranding, a well-optimized game.
Also CSGO. Would've been really interesting to see how that game would've performed considering just how optimized it is.
@@seto007 csgo can run on an overclocked potato...
Great game.
Would be neat to see this done again with a 6700xt or 3060, to use up those oversized frame buffers. It seems like the biggest bottleneck here is VRAM maxing out, so maybe a 12GB 3060 or a 16 GB 6800 or even a Radeon VII could be very interesting. Slower cards, but with more VRAM.
The only problem with the 3060 is it's bus but it's still fine
A 1080 is roughly the same as an RTX2060 , So it's gonna be slower than all 3 cards you listed.
Especially the RX6800 which is comparable to the 3070ti and roughly double the performance of a 1080.
It would be very interesting to see how this same card would perform with 16bg of vram. Seems like it has the power to push that resolution just not enough memory
I'd love to see a 1080 to at 8k
@@arizonarangerwiththebigiro8588 I would love to see an Arizona ranger with a big iron on his hip
The 'weird' behaviour and crashes might be because the system is running out of memory, total memory so including system RAM. When VRAM runs out, it'll overflow into system RAM. The performance will suffer but still work. Once system RAM is also full, well then stuff breaks as at that point windows will write to virtual memory on your system disk.
And that process is terrible if you don't have an SSD as your main boot disk!
My main HP Pavilion 15 is using 12GB of system RAM (out of 16GB installed) as well as just over 8GB of page file. The aforementioned page file is being stored on a 2TB Seagate 5400RPM hard disk, and it's as slow as heck even for general day to day tasks.
@@TheSpotify95 why is it running off a page file when you have 16gb of ram whilst doing every day tasks 🤷

@@Jasontvnd9 my guy the game have a memory leak
You might be able to prevent crashing with 32GB of system RAM, as the GPU will try to use that once you exceed the VRAM. Not that this will make any real difference to playability, though.
i do believe he has 32gigs of DDR4 in already tho or am i nuts?

approaching 6 now actually!
That's why if you go big when you buy a GPU they last along time. My artic storm 980 ti 6gb Vram from 2015 was around 700 bucks then was a lot of money & still is today. That is why even today if you really need a card wait for the price drop crypto is in a all time low right now which is great. So many think the model numbers on the cards mean something they did back then but now just because the number is higher doesn't mean the card is better.

Pretty sure a lot of people are still using half decade or older GPU's, what with the lack of new AFFORDABLE GPU's, due partly to chip shortages and partly to scalpers buying up product and selling them for hugely inflated prices. I mean I'm still using a 6GB GTX 1060 and I've seen the 3GB version(used) selling for more on eBay than what I paid for the 6GB version NEW when I got it.
@@casedistorted thank you for using a realistic price instead of doing 700
Just realised that the 2060 I got which released years after the 1080, is actually worse. amazing.
Raw performance should technically be close, but of course it's a 60 series card so it's slightly bottlenecked by design.

You may think this video is pointless but there are a couple of things that need to be mentioned:
1. Games are so badly optimised.
2. How can a top of the line gpu be "weak" 5 years later? Imagine if we said the same about a 3080. Like im not gonna spend $1000 every 5 years just so i can play a few more demanding games that i also have to pay XD.
3. I dont know why 8K would be a thing, thered be no change at all unless you have a big screen but then again you are going to be far away if you do, so 4k should be most ig..
Even the RTX 3090 can't game at 8K. Nothing can!

I don't know man, I've tried 1440p and 4k, I just still prefer good ol' 1920x1080p. It looks fine, you can use weaker hardware and get PERFECT framerates, they are cheap so you can up the budget and get a 144hz monitor, I also don't ever see 1080p becoming "SD" like 720p has, I think 1080p will be timeless.

They are too busy adding quests to fetch 9000 leaves and a tiger toothbrush than to make a decent running game.
This a 5+ year old graphics card.
Fucking get over yourself, no shit it doesn't run modern games well at 8k. That doesn't make them badly optimized, it makes them optimized for the hardware that's actually currently relevant and capable running the games.
@@Speedojesus it runs Forza perfectly fine as it was clearly optimised properly, probably because it has to run well on a potato console as well as a pc. Unlike most of the other games. Doom would probably run ok as well.

Have you considered using a slightly higher tier processor when you do videos on GPUs not meant for budget?(710,1030,1050ti,1650,etc is what I would consider budget). I was a firm believer in i5's being the best processor for gaming and that anything higher was for content creation and editing. After years of gaming on 4760k,8600k,9600k I found a great deal on a 9900k for $280 new and those extra cores/threads did actually make a difference. I was seeing 15-20+ fps in almost all games I played a long with much less stutter. The 10400 you use is no slouch but I feel you could get better results going up one or two more tiers in cpu class. I understand your channel isnt about bleeding edge and that why I enjoy it, I was just curious as to why you stick with the processor you use.
Ahh, nothing like driving through Mexico in eight "¿que?"
I believe digital foundary mentioned this game had auto dynamic resolution scaling. That's why it's running so well at 8k.
Erm......only if you turn that option on..
Remember when this gpu was a monster!
You should add Deep Rock Galactic to your testing! Its (sometimes) quite easy to run if you find the right settings, and its really fun to play.
I wonder if there is some sort of DRS wizardry going on in horizon 5. I'm shocked at the framerates that 1080 was getting. I'll have to try it out on my 2080 ti

Could you please do a video where you see what older games can run on a gtx 1080 with good settings at 8k?
Quality content, right here. Thanks, dude ... this is what we come for.
I did this same thing but with a 4K monitor back when I got my GTX 1080. It's amazing that so many games would work in 8k even at 30fps. I would suggest maxing out resolution and making your own pre rendered cut scenes by letting the GPU run 1-2 fps, recording it, and speeding it up. It would make great, photorealistic scenes pop to life.
While the 1080 can play games at comparable quality to the ps5 and series x at an average price around 500 used there's really no value in it unless you need it for development.
If the cryptoscaplocolypse never happened this gpu would have dropped to under 300 used. At that price point it would definitely outperform the series s and while building a console killer pc for less than the cost of the console wouldn't be happening soon, it would eventually happen before the next major console release.
Now I dont see that happening until the next major console release. With the 6500XT costing at the lowest price point 200 it's going to be quite a while before budget pc gaming becomes relevant again.
Great video btw.
I wonder is amd's fsr support for older gpu's would help
Nvidia's 8K demo with Doom Eternal used DLSS upscaling, it should work well with FSR - even the driver versions (RSR/NIS) would work but you'd get worse looking HUD/UI elements.
I'm so glad I bought mine 1080 for 340usd used of a marketplace in 2019 :D Today's prices are insane and it still performs awesome. I use 1080p 144hz and everything I throw at it runs at 100fps+, G-SYNC enabled and I can't be happier. Not 780, not 980, but 1080 is future-proof. I hope it'll hold up next 2 years. Not 8K admittedly, but works for Fortnite and World of Tanks at High Settings etc and surprisingly good!. Still life left in the Vega 64 yet and it's coming on for 5 years old too. If I use Ultra settings, the fan spins up a bit, but it's all in a Corsair 680X with plenty of fans so keeps it cool. I have a GTX 1080, and even if I had a newer card I would still not play at 8K because of the concept of "diminishing returns". 1080p with a good form of antialiasing like TXAA is good enough for my eyes. Playing at least 60fps with relatively nice graphics is more important than even 4k gaming.
I did some 8K tests with my 1080ti and was amazed that things even started, old games were fine, New Vegas worked well, at ultra settings, it never dropped below 50 and that's with a mountain of mods, the Witcher 3 was playable, newer titles not so much.

Please benchmark this game. This is more demanding than Crysis.
Real question is can it run minecraft with all possible 1.12.2 mods?

" i got no idea why"
"might be my extreme overclock"
contradicting ur own statement?
Even the most extreme overclock won't turn the 1070 into a 1080. The 1080 has 33% more SMs and uses GDDR5X rather than GDDR5. A radically overclocked 1070 Ti might might do it, especially if the 1080 is at stock and if the application is not bandwidth sensitive. There is only one SM difference between the two but the GDDR5/X issue remains.
I don't even like my RTX 3080 Ti's performance in a game like Fortnite on my 4k screen. I literally have to turn down some settings for a stable 144fps. I can't even imagine trying 8k on my card, let alone a GTX 1080!
Fortnite has some optimization issues after years and years of updates. I run it with a 5900X and TITAN Xp at 1080p and it's crazy how much the framerate will fluctuate. Really should be running at 300+ all the time with comp settings. It isn't like when BR first launched where a Sandy Bridge i5 and 750 Ti could run the game flawlessly at that resolution and even get high refresh rate frames with reduced settings. Problem is the game CPU bottlenecks on even the fastest CPUs.

Interesting experiment... but I wouldn't recommend 8K gaming for the time being.
Most graphics cards that you can get hold of are not capable of 8K gaming, as can be seen by the video - and besides, most monitors aren't even 8K ready anyway. To spend over £3,000 on a monitor is nothing short of lidicrous.
Also, a lot of people don't even have 4K monitors - as seen by the usage statistics, the most common resolution by far is 1080p. 1080p monitors are relatively easy (and cheap) to come by, especially compared to 4K and 8K monitors.
Also, if a lot of devices can't max out games at 1080p (like how my HP OMEN doesn't hit 144FPS on it's 1080p, 144Hz display at maximum settings), there's really no point in using 1440p, 4K, or 8K.
(Also note how 768p is no longer that common compared to 1080p or 1440p, since people are upgrading from older 768p laptops.)
Nah. I absolutely love my 1440p144hz display on my 3070Ti. Not every game warrants 144fps lol.

Then Far Cry 6 at 8K on ultra showed up and proved them wrong. Adding the HD texture pack it could use way over that.
In these extreme res tests u should try Max Payne 3, u showed that it is really well optimised. Would be interesting to see 8k results
Hey RandomGaming, any plans to upgrade to a 12400F for this machine?
Oh what a beautiful slideshow
its funny to remember that before rtx card being released, people showcased game graphics with mods at 4k 60fps using this type of cards
So the 1080 at 4k original settings has same preformance at 1080p ultra+ settings
Can you use 2.0 resolution scale in conjunction with far or can you only have either or ? Also damn Forza and Doom are the pinnacle of optimization.
My 1070 ti is still pushing. I can’t bare the prices at the moment lol. Things don’t make sense anymore when I see a €1000 RTX 3060 lol.
My vega 64 doesnt have any issues with 3440x1440, i don't get 144fps in most games but the competitive ones i need to i get just fine in vulkan. Believe it or not swtiching from a 2700x to a 5800x actually boosted my vega 64 performance when i was using my 2560x1080 monitor.
Same here. Could sell the two I have to miners and buy a newer card but mining represents everything I despise about our species in this century - burning our limited resources to produce nothing actually useful.
Full 8K resolution with maxed graphical settings and raytracing enabled (yes, the GTX 1080 does have support, with latest drivers). Nothing less is acceptable.
you should try MGSV for your benchmark. It being a 2015 game means that a card like the 1080 could perhaps run it at 8k
Did you buy a shed? ~300 pounds for a mortage seems super low.
I love DSR on my old 1070.. problem is if you run a 21:9 UW monitor you can't use DSR in Nvidia Control Panel.
Thanks Nvidia! For some reason it's just disabled, like you can turn it on but in any game I've run it doesn't work at all. Sucks because I used to use it on my 1080p 16:9 monitor all the time.
