- In 2018 Kingdom Come Deliverance released for PC and gave users a wide range of graphical settings to choose from. At it's lowest it could run on AMD's Athlon 3000G with integrated graphics but at it's highest, it put the best of hardware through it's paces and the game even tried to discourage people from using the experimental "ultra high" preset.
So three years later how does it run with a high end RTX 3070 or even a mid-range 6600XT?

I always assumed "Ultra" in this game stood for "we tried some shit with the lighting and render distance, didn't really optimize it but if you need to warm your house in the winter then Ultra is for you"
Yeah it's mostly a gimmick. Lots of games have much better graphics than that game on ultra, which clearly shows it's a matter of optimization and not hardware capability.

Most modern games really don't make sense to run on Ultra settings. Hardware Unboxed did a video about that subject recently. Unless you're running a game above your monitor refresh rate, it doesn't make sense to go to the highest settings.

Ultra high is indeed possible on modern day hardware, just lower the screen resolution to 480p.

I'm not sure I'm seeing much of a difference between High and Ultra.
Then again, I've never thought that texture resolution and shadow resolution were the most important factors in photorealism, but rather the global illumination technique.
Most games that have ultra settings in the last 4-5 years have very little fidelity gain for the hit to performance. Ultra is mostly used for gathering screenshots and video footage for marketing their title. The setting just under maximum quality is normally the setting you should be playing on regardless of system specs

it feels like its easier in modern games to balance good texture resolution and shadow to perform well with global illumination, versus titles pre 2018 were heavily about texture resolution and shadows, i.e splinter cell conviction graphic offerings

This game was always badly optimized, on top of CryEngine being quite heavy, simply switching the CPU priority to high or realtime would get a 5-10 fps boost and fewer drops.
Yeah, 40% CPU and 70% GPU utilization, getting only 40FPS is laughable. Why doesn't it run pinned at 100%?
@@red9350 IF that readout is correct, if it’s RTSS it CAN be wrong/cause issue sometimes, then may be VRAM shortage. Game wants 8+GB usage, and I see many games reach the same, just above 8GB, number, possibly because mathematically it’s a factor of 128 or something. And he doesnt have enough, so it takes it constantly fills up his vram to the highest factor of 128 it can, therefore always using 7+GB with another 1024mb always queued up, therefore always bogging down the cpu/gpu processes and not using 100% of the chips’ powers.

I dont know what you guys talking about, I played KCD in 2020 on 5 year old laptop with 16gb ram, i7 from 2016 and GTX 860 2GB with 30 fps on low detail with 1080p and medium textures still with 27 - 32 fps...stable. Super cool game and even now its way better optimized thanks to patches.

I love this game! The atmosphere, the characters, the dialogue; it's all top notch. Even the wonky combat and odd collision detection are strangely charming.

The fact that the 6600XT usage was in the 60% range definitely suggests it had a lot more to give and the CPU single core performance was probably holding it back. I'm surprised the 3070 faired better
How funny that I just got back into this game yesterday after about 6 months off, and then this pops up in my feed. The game is still a lot of fun.
I finally got a pc that can run decent games, not the best but a lil ryzen 5 2400g / rx580 / 16gb ram and i has me hooked lol. kingdom come was the first game i bought. did a 9 hour sesh on the weekend and didnt realize it. amazing game so glad Im able to play it!
I currently play this for the first time. Have around 100 hrs and it's an awesome game. Running it on 3080 1440p with mixed high very high settings. it's smooth 100+ fps except in cities. Realistically modeled environment is the biggest strength.
Agree. I finished the game on a rx480, and if I replay now with a 6900xt runs perfect at 4k.
1440p might've performed slightly better due to the gpu doing more work, the 10400f might not be milking the most out of the 3070 at 1080p.
Also, i find that games with the draw distance being so short i find quite distracting and takes away from the immersion. I wish i wasn't liiiike thiiiiis.

it's always hard to tell what is (demanding) and what's (un optimized) cause even though this game looks good on ultra, it doesn't look or perfrom as good as something like red dead redemption 2 for example

This is definitely one of those games that need DLSS or FSR
They're going to release an RTX version, presumably with DLSS (otherwise no one will be able to run it).
This game is more CPU bound than GPU. DLSS or FSR will for sure help but unless they improve the engine is not going to change a lot
Should try Lossless Scaling. I just got it the other day and haven't messed with it yet but this game seems like a good one to try it with.

When you set the card to be able to hold just above 60fps, turning on triple buffering and vsync on 60hz will in many cases give a little bit of headroom and even prevent some dips from happening.

This game gave me so much trouble trying to get a solid frame rate. The issue is with the game engine and the CPU. The Ultra preset in this game does not cull geometry AT ALL, so every triangle out to horizon is drawn as if you were right next to it. The only way to speed this up (that I know of) is to have a much larger L2 cache on the CPU. I saw some benchmarks last year and I believe the 9900K is the minimum CPU you'll need to run this game at 60 FPS in Rattay, although some Zen 3 and Rocket Lake CPUs might also be able to do it.
For me night and torches in cities is what kills fps

Is this not just something that the cryengine doesn't do well? Crysis remastered has the same issue with not handling multiple cpu threads properly and the CPU then bottlenecks the GPU.

I don't have this game, but since I see Crysis being mentioned... if it works the same way then basically the game ENGINE, to oversimplify, like pretty much all games focuses on a single core to direct the flow of a game. When games are "multi-threaded" the main core is still crunching the game code and then sending certain tasks to another core. Sometimes it's CPU physics or whatever... to "fix" this kind of "bug" you'd have to essentially rewrite the entire game using a newer game engine that was designed to do a better job of multi-threading but that's not a trivial task... hence why Crysis Remastered still wasn't hitting 60FPS at times with an i7-8700K @ 5.2GHz. There are only THREE ways to "fix" this: drop quality to reduce the load on the CPU core (not ideal), rewrite the game (not ideal) or run with a CPU that gets better performance per core (although GSync/Freesync is excellent for addressing slight FPS drops too).
(and just FYI, if you see a game "spread" across eight cores with, say, "20%" utilization per core, the GPU utilization is 75% and there's no software cap then you've got a CPU bottleneck... games don't just "spread" across cores. What's actually happening if you check Task Manager and see this is that the code is starting and stopping on one core then jumping to another core. It's called "thread jumping" but you're still limited by the performance of one core since the main software thread is still running on only one core at any given moment. You're just seeing an average but it's, again (for my example), 100% bottleneck of one CPU core despite showing 20%)
Started this game on a subpar system and got about halfway through, upgraded and replayed from the beginning. Absolute blast with this game. Need a part 2 or an expansion.

KCD is amazing. At 3440x1440 with a 2080s it ran great after I got the mod Optimized Graphical Presets. Ultra High ran at a consistent 80+, even in towns. Made the game even that much more enjoyable. If you're on PC, there's no reason not to get that mod.

@@chadshowdown9382 I uninstalled it. Had the same issue happen again where tinkering with game settings and then going back to what you started with does not give you the same performance, lost 20fps and couldn't get it back.

Kcd is of my favorite games right now. It runs great on my 3060 on a mix of very high and ultra high settings at 1080p. I did tweak the game a bit including enabling volumetric fog in my user config. Not sure why it's disabled/hidden in game.
Another great video! KCD and RDR2 performance will always be interesting to me. Such versatile options with so much headroom for performance and beauty!
I think that's great that there is a low-res mode in the game. Up until a few years ago, the only PC I had to game on was a laptop with AMD integrated graphics, and I always appreciated when a game was easily put into potato mode.
I've literally been playing this game for the past few weeks. It's amazing.
Truly is. My favorite RPG of all time. I put like 400 hours into it and completed every single mission, grid searched the entire map, haha loved the game. I highly recommend the DLC.

Hey RGiHD, as far as I know Radeons don‘t have a great DX11 performance but there is DXVK (a library of .dll files which converts DirectX into Vulkan). It’s intended for Linux but you can also use it on Windows (but I only would recommend it in Singleplayer games due to Anticheat systems) and from what I‘ve read it will boost performance on AMD cards. I tried it on my RTX 2060 but there were no performance gains. Maybe you can give it a try on a Radeon.

I had a 1080 Ti when this came out and it looked great on ultra but ran badly at times. But I found the game boring and it just wasn't my thing really but I should give it another try as it has a really good reputation for being quality with those who do like it
game's quite fun, the archery in the beginning blows ass though
You have to give it some hours to fall in love in it. The combat being pretty hard, but once learned, it's very fun.
The quest line is also pretty interesting, way better than many games

There's some amazing mods out now probably make the game super fun.
Its a game where you really need to inhabit the character, he cant fight very well in the beginning so you either need to train him to fight well or be aware of that fact and not charge headlong into enemies. He cant even read at the start so you either need to learn or go around not reading anything. Its my favorite game ever because it connects you to the character much more than any other game has done
I remember Doom 3 having a similar warning when turning the graphics all the way up
This is still my favourite RPG ever, very hard to get into but once you do it’s an incredible journey. Really hope we get a sequel.

I just love that mechanic where you fall of your horse if you bump your head into something. It makes riding through small gates and near low hanging stuff fun. And more realistic than just going through it.
I love thise mechanics too. I beat black Peter in the tourney and he ambushed me by setting up a rope to clothesline me off my horse just next to the Theresa's house. I accidentally ended up killing him, I kinda wish he lived so we could have more interactions.
One of the best games I've ever played. In some ways it made me feel like a kid again, like I was playing Oblivion or Skyrim for the first time, but more realistic.. you can really feel your character grow, there are so many good things to say about this game. The only issue I have with the game is fighting groups of high level enemies in melee at the highest difficulty.. the targeting system is horrible when there are 4 or more and they're all rushing at you, spamming you, trying to flank you. It constantly selects the wrong target. It was bad enough to make me stop playing but I'll definitely play it again in the future.
Fighting system is a nightmare! I was forced to use cheat codes (trainer) in fight scenes. My advice - Do the same, to enjoy the story
It's hilarious when people praise the game for it's realism, but then slam it for not letting you take on 6 armed and armored guys at the same time with zero effort...

@@AmyLeesPetWookiee I mean, they did die if they decided to fight multiple opponents simultaneously, regardless of their targeting system. Hell, they still die even today for the same reason :D
I've tried to get into Kingdom Come but I cant. They teach you the sword play mechanics like once and then you're on your own which means if you forget the perfect technique you are guaranteed to get killed by any bandit.
The thing is, it's very punishing at the beginning because Henry just sucks at everything, the combat mechanics are designed not to work that well from the start. The game is a breeze later on because Henry's skills are just so much better and the combat mechanics will actually work
I'm definitely noticing the wide-angle lens effect that I never understood being added to games. It just makes everything look weird. We already know how to film things where the shape and size of things doesn't change in the corners, so we should know the right FOV to use, but games for a while would not use them.
Sure, increased FOV makes sense on an ultrawide monitor, or if you sit with your monitor where it takes up your entire point of view, but I find it disorienting as a default. I'm glad I haven't noticed anything like that in the modern games I pick up. I'd actually forgotten about this problem until it showed up here.
I can't really accept narrow field of view. I feel our eyes can see way more in real life.

I got this game a couple of years ago and it was such an immersive experience I wanted to hold off on playing it until I got better hardware. I've had a 5900X/6800XT for months now and is coming up in my backlog of games. I keep putting it off because I want to have a week off to dive into it properly.
That said this game in particular tends to run better on Nvidia graphic cards.
With an RX 580, a Ryzen 7 3700X, and 16 GB of RAM, I find this game usually runs the High settings (in 1080p) at a pretty steady 60 FPS. I only occasionally get tiny frame drops when the game's loading in a bunch of things at once. Thankfully haven't encountered stuttering or frame drops in combat though. There are some weird bugs I've noticed regarding the screen flashing black twice every time I enter Rattay (through either the Lower Gate or the Upper Gate), as well as audio stuttering of dialog when there's a lot of ambient (or even active) noise. When I got that roan from Uzhitz and Henry had to sing to it, his voice kept cutting out to the point where it almost sounded like he was singing through a box fan. I had the same thing happen in Skalitz upon returning and dealing with Zbyshek. After I beat him down and he ran away, Henry's shouts would start cutting out, just as described before.
Got this game last year and only just started playing it recently, love the game, heaps in depth storyline (so far), truly feels like your in Henry's shoes seeing what life was like back then, though I reckon they could have made it a bit more dark and gory but hey that's what mods are for, also running the game on a hand-me-down GTX 970 because I refuse to pay $500-700AUD because of markup for the card I want that I can't get lol :)
Fun video! One note though: You are CPU bound, 11700K produces a higher framerate in bigger towns. If someone buys a 1200 dollar 3070 or 3080 they probably won't combine that with a 170 dollar 10400F, to be honest... A core i7 or core i9 would be more befitting that kind of GPU horsepower in these types of games.

The reason you were getting lower performance and low GPU usage in Rattay is because you were CPU-limited. An i5 10400F is too weak to sustain 60FPS in busier areas
One tip - show where the game really shines - night at castles with lanterns etc - thats even more demanding and awesome atmospheric

As a coincidental bonus the game is currently on sale in the Epic store - less than £10 for base version & just over £10 for the Royal edition.
When playing at lower resolutions like 1080p most of the process is offloaded onto the CPU when increasing resolution the GPU will start picking up more slack.

@Zoofy Zoof screen resolutions are way higher than 1080p these days. Even laptop uses can plug into a second display. 1440p is a big increase from 1080p and 4k is a giant leap, but requires more powerful hardware especially in games. If you are a laptop user exclusively, I understand your question, but even then you can use higher resolution displays with your laptop

Unfortunately laptops have their limitations as well as their hardware being specifically designed for their use case. 1080p gaming is considerably easier for a desktop PC to handle so the PC will use more CPU as it isn’t as demanding. When you move to 1440p, 4K or even 8K your GPU will handle more and more of the tasks required as the CPU will no longer be able to deal with the increased work load.

I am not flexing you probs got better, but I have a gtx 1650 graphics card with 8 gb ram (too low! D:) and 1 Terabyte storage memory.
It handles nearly all games really well for me, I just need 16 gb ram and the type my laptop takes isn't being shipped to America so I am stuck

I think many games like this one that strain high end PCs on launch are actually “future proofed” meaning that the high res settings are intended to be run in years to come as a way to give the game longevity.

You can get your hands on a top gpu but at the price of a crown jewel.

Let's exclude how there was no shortage in 2019 and the 5700XT and 2080 ti were selling without issue despite being the most RMA'd GPUs AMD and Nvidia have ever released. They were literally so abundant they were returned in mass over small defects. But sure, no one could acquire one. Keep telling yourself that.
Back when I had my computer, I ran this at 1440p ultra settings hitting 60+ fps with a 2080 super and i9-9900k I believe. God this game was gorgeous. I remember just stopping to watch a stream flow in the morning with bushes on both sides. Super relaxing.

Still have this installed. Beat it 3 times now and still will fire it up from time to time. 100 percent agree though, stick it out! Once you learn the combat system/ game mechanics, it is an amazing game. Hope they make a second!
In Skalitz before the army attacks, you can farm the village and get to level 20 before you leave, no lie. You can kill all the guards and npc and they will eventually respawn and you can farm them. You can build multiple skills, combat skills including bow, fists, sword, mace and so on. You can sneak, pickpocket, and pick locks. You can pick herbs, and other things. If you do it right, you can kill the cumans when you leave Skalitz, even without knowing the fighting moves you learn later. When you ride the horse to Talmburg, there is supposed to be cumans on horses chasing you, but you can kill them all, but for some reason on the way to Talmburg you will still take the damage from arrows even tho no one is chasing you.
Started playing this on a 1050 4GB now I got a 3060 TI I love this game I feel guilty for not playing it as much this last summer.

Great honestly, for 1080p/144Hz it's plenty. I'm fairly CPU bound right now anyway (R5 1600 @ 3.8GHz) so GPU isn't my upgrade path.
Won't push the most demanding games at 120+ FPS of course, Cyberpunk 2077 I get 74 FPS average with dips to 48-52 FPS in a couple locations like Kabuki District. That's at Med/High settings.
I don't think you need 120+ FPS for AAA games anyway though, 60-85 FPS is the sweet spot.
But for games it really counts let's say Path of Exile, shooters, etc I have no trouble hitting 120 FPS steady.
Unfortunately I don't play tons of games especially newer ones so you'll probably find better comparisons elsewhere. That being said if you're happy with Med/High settings it performs extremely well for 1080p/144Hz and 1440p/60-90Hz.

The game drops to 58-60 fps in the big towns at points. Also some shadowy areas on Ultra tanks the framerate further but that seems to be resolved by lowering the shadows one notch.

I know RUclips does a fair amount of compression that may have made this look sub-optimal, but I've played the game on High settings, and other than the framerate drop, I can't tell the difference between high and ultra.
What a legendary game, hard as hell, but super immersive.

This game has come the closest to replicating the feeling of playing Oblivion and Skyrim for the first time for me. So immersive.
This is 100% one of my favorite games, i had 1080 ti back in the day and i couldnt get 4k medium
And now with the 3080 4k high 60 any day

1080ti would be great for 1080p back then high refresh i dont get it 4K is just not worth it for this age gpus are slow for that still i wait for 4K 240hz experience 🙂

I have a 5900x and a 3080 Ti and it still struggles in Rattay. I shouldn't run it at max settings but that is one of the few areas of the game where it struggles to get a solid frame rate.

Just instal reshade, looks way better than ultra. One good man made great video about this. On maxed settings i got 70-100fps. i5 11400f gtx1080. Poor research man
Love this game. And I really hope that the next iteration of it will keep all the realistic mechanics and improve them or even make the game more hardcore. I'm really afraid that given the criticism of the lame game "journalists" and some streamers that couldn't get past the mechanics and the pace of the game, they might dumb it down and try to make it another Skyrim.
They could just add a "game journo" mode. Basically turn off combat altogether. I agree with you though.

I was surprised at the warning, but chose to ignore it when I got my Strix RTX 3090. I can't remember what FPS (5120×1440) I got, but I quickly lowered the settings. Let me know if you want me to get an actual FPS count for you and I'll fire it up.

Y'know Crytek engine has a standardised plug in for RTX now too I believe, wait for that update to melt every GPU for the next few years.
I only aged it on Xbox one. I wanted it on PC, but was afraid it'd be too demanding on my aging mid-range rig. Had no idea it scaled.
I am glad KCD holds up, though, because it's really a remarkable game well worthy of extended playthroughs and replay.
The optimization of this game is absolutely abysmal
My first KC:D playthrough was on an r9 360, the game is demanding but it chugged along all the way to the end even on that ancient card. One of my favorite games of all time.
I really enjoyed Kingdom Come back when it first released, actually played the PS4 port. I still shudder at how absolutely horrible it ran but I still finished it cuz the story was really engaging. However, since getting a powerful PC and retrying it - I couldn't get far. The combat, IMO at least, is pretty janky and bad. I hope they rework it whenever they do a sequel.
One of my favorite game releases ever. I was just a bit sad I put it off buying for years and wish I had not. I hope they make a sequel and hope to get back to this game again one day to try on Ultra!

Also, take a closer look at 6600xt being used at 65-68% in town. Guess AMD needs to work on their drivers a bit more. I played on my gtx1070 before and 2 years later after release and performance difference was very pleasing. I was able to get stable frames at ultra with a little bit more than 50 frames in Rattay

@@lukatosic4447 Haha I used to have a 1080ti but sold it in January I believe then my backup gtx 780 died so I had to shell out $80 (AUD) for a used 7970 so I could have a gpu temporarily but then prices went to crap when I finally had enough saved for an rtx 3080 that it was no longer possible to get that upgrade that I wanted... Guess I sold my gpu too late. Still hoping for decent enough pricing on the next gen cards as I'm not paying 2-3x the original pricing on a gpu just because miners/scalpers buy them all up. I'm not really miserable at the moment but I definitely want to have a capable gpu for my 4k display as there are upcoming games I want to be able to play with my mates that my current gpu probably won't be able to even run haha.
I swear, I was JUST about to load this game up and decided to put on some RUclips in the background when I saw this video's title and thumbnail. I thought "Wait, this game looks familiar. *clicks video*" and 1 second in, I already know it's KCD. I only started playing it the other day, but I absolutely love it.
I had to play trough this game 3 times to finish all quests (because of story line breaking bugs) but I enjoyed every moment of it.
Well I played with 1050 ti OC so ...
1280x720p mixed ran pretty smoothly (big towns were disastrous) before patching. Gotta try it again to see how it handles now. Love your vids😁
the Rattay fps dip must be an unsolved bug because there's absolutely no reason why it should do that - it always happens in that open area at the bottom of the hill, I've tested this on a 1080ti, 2080ti, 3070 and 3080 and it always happens.
I bought this game on steam a couple of months ago and I'm just now getting the time to really dive into it... and I fricken love it!!!
Hmm, nice to see developers are maing graphics settings that are aimed at truly testing hardware, including targetting future hardware releases.
Troube is, getting a decent graphics card for anywhere near its RRP nowadays (except for something like a GT210, GT710 or GT1030) is going to be very difficult. Even my GTX 960 2GB is selling on eBay for far more than it should do, given how less and less games tend to run as well on it.
Is there something I'm missing? Not to say that it looks bad. It looks pretty good. But even on Ultra High, it doesn't look all that amazing that you'd need a 3080 to run it smoothly. Maybe its just video compression on RUclips, but it seems like it is just poorly optimized in terms of graphics.
The best way to play KCD is with Mods. You can install reshade mods which change the lighting, shadows, colour, gamma, contrast to make it so much better without a huge performance hit.
There is something I always wondered: Do you only have low end hardware? I know your channel focuses a lot on low end hardware but I was just curious.
It's not commonly talked about in most games being PC releases is that the ultra setting generally has zero effect on the visuals in motion if you were to take a screen grab and switch between the two and stare at it for about 10 minutes and you can probably pick out the subtle details that are different but if it takes you 10 minutes what's the point?
I mean if I can play Doom eternal at 4K without the resolution changing in dynamic mode.
with some Shadow resolution set to medium that the majority set to high and ultra.
setting textures and model detail to ultra. the shadow's have the largest effect on hardware yet had the least effect on visuals.
Im still running on a 1080ti which has very little difference from a 2080.
so in reality we're only one generation from a 1080 TI.
the only major improvements have been on stereoscopic and RTX.
The improvements have been minor.
But it's clear RTX still isn't ready for prime time.

To make the game look *really* good, I put the in-game GFX settings at around Medium (with greater emphasis put into higher vegitation settings whenever possible)
and then installed reShade and messed around with filters and setting until it was a popping green technicolor wizard of Oz wonder!
I highly recommend this game, and it runs well on linux with steam's "protonDB" too.
I have beat KCD about 10 times now and every time I find out something new or play in a different way. I just wish we had got a story DLC that had a more fulfilling ending.

One of my favorite modern RPGs, i absolutely got lost in this world for a 100hrs, it's one of those games that make you depressed once you finish it.
Because the 1% lows don't change much between 1440p and 1080p on the 3070, it seems to be CPU bottlenecked at those resolutions. Have you tested it on a different CPU setup, or with an overclock?
