    Knowing how Khuzdul sounds, I was expecting this song to sound a little harsh on the ears. However, my expectations were totally surpassed, and the song sounded great! Great video, I can tell it took a hell of a lot of effort

    • @pmigdal
      @pmigdal 3 года назад +3

      Some people think that all songs in German sound like Rammstein. Same story.

    • @jarlnils435
      @jarlnils435 10 месяцев назад

      People often believe, that german is a harsh language, because they only ever heared german in Nazi speeches.
      But I can assure you, it can be as gentle as a flower.
      Same with the elvish languages of Tolkien.
      If the first thing you hear, in Quenya, is the oath of Fëanor, you would think of it as ugly. But than you hear Namarië, the song of Galadriel, and it is the most beautiful sound in the world.
      Now, of Khuzdul, all we hear of it, we hear in battle. War cries. Of course they sound ugly. That's their purpose.
      But as a spoken language, it would sound very nice, if used in normal day to day live.

    ô, ‘azgu malasul ‘abad nibzurul
    Oh, misty eye of the mountain below
    Iskhira narid u marub nadadê
    Keep carful watch of my brothers’ souls
    Ra muneb id-manl taslami

    If this is to end in fire, then we should all burn together
    Harûs tabidi uzdar, ni id-lomil
    Watch the flames climb high into the night
    Igli ‘adad, ô, itnirab z’mamhili
    Calling out father, oh, stand by and we will

    And if we should die tonight, then we should all die together

    Oh should my people fall, then shortly I’d do the same
    Makhafdûn ni ‘abad-dûm, nekhmâ y’ungat ‘d-urs
    Confined in mountain halls, we got to close to the flame

    Ra nî lomil tamhari, akhsigabi azâgê
    And if the night is burning I will cover my eyes
    Khama nî aznân tanniki, nadadê zatamradîn
    For if the dark returns, then my brothers will die
    Ra ins manl taslini zadahu, ni ‘ala itnîn azsâlul
    And as the sky is falling down it crashed into this lonely town
    Ra ya tada askâd ai-shamal, kanâgê tarkhashîn
    And with that shadow upon the ground I hear my people screaming out
    Asakhi ‘urs, ni ‘abad
    I see fire inside the mountain
    Asakhi ‘urs, tamhari ‘d-zarâs
    I see fire, burning the trees
    Ra asakhi ‘urs, tamtami ‘d-marâb

    • @rebekahmui
      @rebekahmui  6 лет назад +51

      Sean D.G great question! He only formulated a handful of khuzdul words. David Salo, modern Tolkien language scholar, expanded on that (for the Hobbit movies, for example). Dwarrowscholar further expanded the language and created Neo Khuzdul. He's the one who "translated" the song.

    One question shouldn't "kh" and "gh" in Khuzdul sound different than English? ? Actually in the desolation of smaug we heard an Khuzdul sentence between Balin an Thorin (I was an insult to The elf king) and it was clear their that there is a [x] and [q] sound in Khuzdul like German ch in Rorschach and French R respectively..

    1:44 did the Dwarves get their word for father from the elves?

      Not sure!

      Aule/Mahal himself taught the dwarves their language. I'm not sure if I am right, but I think that the only language at that time was Quenya. If I am right, he could have taken some influence from it. If I am wrong, Khuzdul would have been older than Quenya because the elves only awake after the dwarves were created. It could be possible.

    Damn... that's beautiful. I bet it was quite a challenge to set the rythm as in english.

      Haha thanks! It was quite a long but enjoyable process. I've done interlanguage song translations before, sometimes it's impossible, sometimes it's doable, and sometimes the translation needs to be tweaked to get those words fitting properly.

      I think it's in the LOTR appendices

      Yes, it's mentioned in the Appendices of LOTR as Rebekah mentioned, Appendix A: "Dis was the daughter of Thrain II. She is the only dwarf-woman named in these histories." The next page gives the family tree of Durin's Folk where she's mentioned as the last child of Thrain II, with Thorin being listed as "Thorin II Oakenshield 2746-2941" his younger brother Frerin 2751-2799 and then Dis 2760 with no death year listed. Under Dis, they list Fili 2859-2941 and Kili 2864-2941. It's worth noting that the LOTR appendices lists Fili as the elder whereas the original Hobbit said he was the younger.

      Hello ! Have you thought of interpreting the song of durin of Clamavi De Profundis in Khuzdûl? It could be really nice with your voice, although I guess it's a lot of work!
