Drawing in my sketchbook at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City. John Singer Sargent is one of the greatest portrait artist of all time, I took advantage of a special exhibition showing his drawings in charcoal. I love drawing this way. It really is like painting with a stick or pencil, filling in local tones and working to the bolder details, and the result looks classically academic. I believe it's how Sargent himself characteristically worked, considering his regard of values, the confidence that highlights would reveal themselves, and the situation of features.

I know from his biography that Sargent traveled as a young person with his family throughout Europe and made studies of master works in museums. It is remarkable to me how Cesar is connected to the history of the old masters through the seminal process of learning from the past to prepare to make something new. Enjoyed the video .

Cesar’s ability to nail the proportions always strikes me. Getting your marks in largely the right place on the first try goes a long way towards having a successful drawing. It is a difficult skill to ingrain . The other thing he really does well in these quick sketches is apply a solid value structure that holds up at distance. Shape and value folks shape and value, it’s fundamental

Fantastic to watch you develop this in real time and to listen to your thoughts as you do. Your initial tones in the shadow shapes are exactly how Sargent would have started a watercolor sketch. ❤️ So great. I wonder if the people who sat for these portraits ever imagined that their images would be hanging in museums for the world to study? 😉

    • @sharonoddlyenough

Great video. Sargent has always been one of my favorites. I did the same thing, any master that provoked something within me; I studied them. First to analyze what it was about their piece that I was drawn to and then how this was achieved by the other artist. I copied and studied until I felt comfortable with the technique and then I attempted to reproduce this aspect and it into my own pieces, no matter how minute the step. And so, as a result the personal techniques and style of my artwork is just a marriage, a mashup, a compilation, the offspring of many small nuances of art that I admired enough to study and become intimate with. Does this make me an unimaginative fraud or analytical artist? You are a master, I think that you are amazing.
