There's something to be said for staying in your lane for what you do great, look at Arkane & Redfall.
Rand nailed it around 1:27:00. The enthusiasts say exclusives matter, but they don’t. What really matters is mindshare and “it” factor. Which PS5 has for the same reason Apple has. It’s a popular item. Sunset Overdrive and Ori and Titanfall all would have smashed it on PS4.
Nah Ratchet lost money and even super hero games aren't as kucrative as some might suggest 315m for Spiderman 2 yeah Xbox is doing fine

I start the night with a long Triple Jump video to help fall asleep and I wake up to this podcast so thanks for helping keep me asleep.
What surprised me most with Xbox year in review was the amount of MS rewards earned. 162,394 earned in 2023 while barely trying. God I hope they aren't gutting the rewards program on Xbox like it seems.
They already have. Across the board.
I'm one of the rare people who switch from PS to Xbox. I was a happy PS4 user but Xbox were offering next gen at a very affordable price with the Series S. I didn't really play Sony first party and what Xbox had interested me. Very happy with my decision!
I hope Xbox does this. PS5 Pro is next year and I'd hate for Xbox to lag behind for four more years, let's not do that. That would mean Pro becomes my main console for two years and then it's back to Xbox.
Im a little chapped that series x is finally getting some games and they are already announcing the next system... lets try supporting the current gen before pushing the next one
Interesting discussion on Xbox releasing the next gen early. I think its a pretty risky endeavor. I know the console space has changed dramatically since, but the Dreamcast got completely undercut by the PS2 for releasing ahead of it. PS2 came out with the ability to play dvds, better graphics, a better controller etc. There could be some jump in technology between the next gen Xbox and the PS6 that's omission could hurt Xbox, not to mention the ability to manipulate prices in reaction to the Xbox by Sony. Things have homogenized in the console space compared to then, but I think releasing the next Xbox early with a bunch of AI features (which I think consumers are still pretty iffy on the implications of, right or wrong) is a pretty big gambit in some ways, but maybe its worth it to get the spotlight on release. Great pod!
The next gen console talk was interesting. Does platform choice and a digital library matter much anymore
when both platforms have a streaming service and you can play many games from last gen and current gen. All Xbox has to do to swing things in there favor is just make great games and continue keeping game pass as good as it is now or better. Especially for the casual gamers. Wait till the abk games get put on game pass and people can play cod. If most casuals only play cod and sports games then why does your last console matter anymore? Xbox has all of it on gamepass?
Also have to consider that PC gaming is becoming more accessible. We have handheld's like the Steam deck starting at $400 and offering the biggest exclusives from Xbox, PS, and PC. I very much expect consoles to go the future route Microsoft painted in 2013 with the Xbox One. An all in one entertainment device focused on playing games. People push back against it, but the Series S is probably the most future proof console this generation because of both it's size and price. I can actually see someone thinking "why get a Roku or Alexa or Apple TV when we can get a Series S on sale for a hundred bucks more". I think traditional console gaming has hit maturity in traditional markets. If we see console sale growth it'll be in growing markets, but on global scale the growth we'll see in places like the US is in Mobile, cloud, and PC gaming. The PS5 and Xbox Series X don't really have a place as mid-range PCs become more accessible and have more content at lower prices and better hardware for not much more. Or as low range PC hardware becomes more accessible and optimize improves. Or as we see mobile hardware improve so much we get video games (in whatever state) playing natively on iPhones. Or as cloud gaming improves and so on. One of Sony's bigger issues this gen is not realizing this trend. Consoles like the Series X and PS5 can't be pushing for this narrative of more expensive more powerful hardware in a market where people only really buy consoles because they're cheaper and easier to use than PCs. Price is what killed the PS3 and the Xbox One.

Glad to hear Rand is going to give Baldur's Gate a try. For someone who loves games as much as he does I was surprised he was considering skipping it despite all the accolades which it richly deserves, he really would be missing out.
I'm not a fan of isometric RPGs but once I got used to the point of view and control scheme I was blown away by how amazing the interlocking story choice/consequence was and the sheer variety of gameplay options the game gives you. As Jez said every combat encounter is hand-crafted with unique NPCs, many creatures you will only fight once and never see again which you just don't see in games today.
Oh, and bragging about beating it before Jez would not be impressive since you can skip like 85% of the game to finish it. Which I did for my second run as the Dark Urge lol.
These guys are straight cappin when it comes to younger gamers not wanting consoles. Most ppl that have a gaming pc have a console too. It just happens that Xbox isn’t that console of choice.

100% on the same vibe as Jez with gaming right now...working a lot of hours per week along with family, gaming has become a time to just shut off my mind in typically shorter sessions...so I only beat maybe 2-3 games this year, but played a lot of different stuff and had some fun with Halo, Diablo, Battlefield, Doom & a bunch of indies
Jez you’ll have to source anything more anecdotal than what your friends are saying about their kids’ gaming habits because the data does not support consoles becoming boomer products or losing popularity. It’s true that tablets are gamer friendly for young kids but beyond that very young age I don’t think any data is suggesting consoles being replaced by PC. It’s true PC has a nice surge as of late thanks to the popularity of streamer culture but I don’t see any data suggesting kids aren’t into consoles or that generationally consoles are losing popularity.
That’s bc there isn’t any evidence supporting their claims. They’re just trying to save face as much as possible when presented the data of console sales.
It’s just like the Xbox engagement Jez likes to spin. Microsoft smudges the heck out of those numbers to help them look better(like counting ps and switch users that play Minecraft as Xbox users)

I was 16 years on Xbox but this year I switched to PC (4080) I played all games on my Series X and sold it now I play from my couch on my 65" oled TV with a controller and it feels like a Console but much more powerful and that's what I wanted this gen! Iam playing Resident evil 4 re at 4k 120hz on ultra with ray tracing 🤯.. will I get the next xbox I don't know rumours said it had 16 core 32 threads... that's what my 4080 already got 😅 so at this point its already outdated + I can play all the great Tactic Shooter like ready or not which is not on the Consoles with an controller it's a win for me
Sony could remake the last of us part 1 30 times, and the fanboys would praise them and enjoy the same game each year...

I think Xbox's strategy will be different in different regions. If their strongest xCloud market is Brazil, they will try pushing people to Cloud more there. With PC being strong in Europe they will push PC more in Europe. In USA? They will be push consoles. And so on.
There are some people that think that Microsoft is going to buy Sony outright but I don't think so.
I foresee a "Japanese Killer App" being developed for Xbox but it's timing is probably gonna land as a launch window for XSX²
I have a question if Xbox wanted to could they make online free. If someone buy the full game download it and start playing cause there WiFi is good but don’t have game pass or do.
Great, great commentary about Sony long term strategy. Over next 5 years Xbox looks strong, Sony seem to be in a precarious position where thier margins are small and are highly reliant on 3rd parties. Xbox is one of the largest producers of games and can sustain themselves.
To be honest don't care about Blade only because Arkane are making it
Sony multi player push is in disarray, i agree. Set back, delays and cancellations, and the main architect of this push is leaving. They seem out of their depth

I have an Xbox Series X. If Microsoft drops support for it so early on its lifetime, I will never again purchase an "Elite Version" of a console. 👎🏻
why cant we get awesome live service games that have single player campaigns. remember SOCOM, REACH, Battlefield 3, Bad company. Its so sad a live service game doesnt need to go 5-10 years like apex. some can go two years and be fine!
Guys i subbed. Video was good but way to long. Would love a deadpool game for xbox but also daredevil and Ghost rider would be money makers. Same with Thor if ninjatheory gave it a shot. Melina juergens as hella or lady sift.
The problem with the notion "MS already has a Pro, it's the PC" is that 3rd party games (which make up most of the games) don't go through xbox live unless they are on gamepass. I want all my achievements and friends through one account. Sadly, due to the total screw-up of MS over the years, nobody is selling their games on the windows store.
Not really gamepass, more like Xbox Play Anywhere. Which Microsoft should 100% do more to incentivize developers and publishers to take advantage. There's no xbox ecosystem unless it becomes the forefront.

Xbots should definitely get a medal for optimism against all odds. The Xbox Tax is not a lack of praise for mediocrity. A cutting edge next gen Xbox console is coming to beat PS5 Pro. Masterpiece games are in the works. And Xbox have another secret weapon to replace all the other secret weapons that did not work. If there is a lack of good news, put PlayStation bad news in there to compensate. But the cancelation is actually good news because it is a rejection of games as a service in favour of masterpiece single player story based games. Basically, Jim Ryan rocked the boat and tried to jump on games as a service because it was trending, so he had to go.

I don't think there ever was a time when they were the best studio in the world. They've always been overhyped.
It would be hard to place them in a top 100 list to be honest. They always made mid games and eventually peaked with UC4 (which was one of my favorite games of 2016), and since then they just nosedived into irrelevancy.

And btw, TLOU2 is one of the most mechanically sound game of last gen that features some of the best stealth and action gameplay we have seen in an action adventure game.
@@sbh1889 Calling TLOU 2 one of the most mechanically sound games ever made is insane when it and its predecessor has some of the most plain third-person shooting combat systems ever made. You want a real cover shooter? Go play the Gears games, which are superior from a combat standpoint to TLOU in every way. Oh and btw nothing from last gen can beat MGSV when it comes to stealth gameplay
Oh and unlike TLOU2, Hellblade 2 will have a good story made by competent writers. And, for the record, the reason why we are hyping up Hellblade 2 despite it being a "WaLkInG SiM" (which is rich considering most Sony exclusives could be considered walking sims) is because Xbox doesn't have many third-person style games. If Xbox had a million walking sims like PlayStation does, then it wouldn't be as hype-worthy. It's all about the variety, something that PlayStation lacks.

For someone who is almost always pessimistic about Xbox, Jez sure is giving a very positive view of PlayStation's future... When reality is very different. They were not prepared for this future because of their arrogance, and it's not beyond reason that this could be the beginning of their end. They cannot get any bigger, so I think if they want to survive, they should pivot towards focusing on what they are good at but at the cost of growth. They will never grow bigger than they are unless they are bought by someone bigger. Nintendo stays in their lane, but they will never be bigger than what they are today, and they are fine with it.
I don't think their problem is being arrogant, it's more their strategy that is problematic.
They try to stop progress and change, to keep things the way they are now where they are on top in the market. And that has never before worked out for any market leader.
Nobody can stop progress, if they invest in that by trying to halt progress for their competitors, it means they aren't investing that money in their own technological progression, and they will eventually lose. And once that ball starts rolling the other way and they are in a bad position, they are done. And that would actually be bad for everyone that likes gaming. Because it's very difficult to jump into a solidified market with huge companies and still be successful.

However, I do still believe that this could be their beginning of the end because they were not prepared, and life does not wait for you when you're late. I also do not fully subscribe to your last point about it being bad for gaming because I think it may only apply to those who want to see gaming remain the way it has been in recent years and before that... Gaming is evolving, and it will look very different in the future whether we like it or not.

Avowed has been in development since 2018 that 5 years there is no reason that game should look the way it does I don't care if it's an art style they need to improve it, it's not an independent game anymore it's a first party title these excuses about what the engine can do just don't fly anymore I don't care about picking up random trash in my games I'd rather have great graphics and animations over the physics of leaving 2000 potatoes on my spaceship lol
