One thing I love about bedtime stories is even when they embellish or speculate on the supernatural, they always take time to respect and lament those who are lost in the mysteries.

I was stationed near Nome Alaska at Port Clarence (USCG LORAN Station). 1 year of bleak isolation. I had the opportunity to overnight in Nome several times - which was a metropolis compared to the 26 people stationed at Port Clarence.
It is a very unique, desolate yet lovely place. On my last trip out of Nome, I flew out on the afternoon "milk" run on Alaska Air and got a chance to fly all the way up to Barrow before heading to Anchorage. Summers were a total blast up there - sunrise was around 3.30 am and sunset was around 12.30 am. I used to stay up late on Friday nights and watch the sunset. Winters took a lot out of you - sunrise was around 10.00 am and sunset was around 2.30 pm. We used "SAD" lights in our rooms and work areas so we could keep our sanity. "SAD" lights were special lights that had a full spectrum of light. One of the biggest things in winter time was to keep yourself busy - stay away from booze and exercise! All that said - I would go back in a heartbeat. (Was also stationed in Kodiak and Cordova as well.)

One of the most interesting places I ever saw in Alaska was the nuclear test area on Amchitka Island - on the Aleutian Islands. In the late 60's and early 70's - DOD did underground nuclear test detonations at Amchitka for weapons research. Amchitka was the site of a WW2 Army / Air Corps long range bomber based used to drive the Japanese out of Attu and Kiska. One of the ships I was stationed on stopped there and had beach party to celebrate crossing the International Date Line (1987). The air field still had lots and lots of old buildings - warehouses and quonset huts left standing.

One thing I find amusing and interesting is that with men and women stationed at the Amundsen-Scott station in the south pole, they know they are in the most isolated region anywhere on earth and they have to find ways to stay entertained when not at work. While some watch movies from a massive stack of DVDs in the living room or play online games on the Playstation, others amuse themselves by running through the snow completely naked. No, I am not making this up. This comes from the scientists' own mouths. And of course, when you're stuck over a day's flight from home, that scientist down the hall, sooner or later, winds up looking as hot as a Sports Illustrated or GQ model. So one scientist showed the "emergency supplies closet". It has everything you'd expect: bandages, Neosporin, medical tape, etc. And then he pulled out a MASSIVE plastic crate.
It was stuffed completely full of condoms of all sorts. Well, human nature. Better safe than sorry. I understand completely and find absolutely nothing wrong or unusual about that.

The first case is exactly like the Michael McKeeny case where I live. Michael drove his car to Hueston woods here in Ohio. His family and friends couldn't reach him and when cops found his car, his cell phone, money, wallet, everything was still in his car, but he was gone. No sign of a struggle, no evidence of an animal attack. No one had messaged to meet him there and the dogs couldn't pick up a scent outside of the car. A truly bizzare case. He was a young guy I think his mid 20s. I lay awake at night wondering what could had possibly happened to him. I'd say that was about 2 years ago now.

One of the most known disappearance cases here in Finland was the 2006 case of Antti Hanhivaara, who disappeared without a trace in Inari, Lapland. Police eventually found his car abandoned and in a bad shape along a narrow, rural road in Angeli, which is not terribly far off from the town of Inari. Apparently he had ran out of gas, and his tires had literally been burned off the rims. Investigation concluded that Antti had taken part in local festivities on the night of his disappearance and had friends along for the 60 kilometers he drove from the town of Karigasniemi, where they had first attended a house party, to Angeli where his car eventually broke down due to reckless driving. The last known sighting of Antti came from two lumberjacks who claimed to have seen a man matching Antti's last known description walk into the Laplands wilderness and never returned. To this day, no one knows for certainty what happened to Antti, since his body was never found and Police concluded no foul play, since Antti wasnt known to have had enemies. He was only 21-years old at the time.

Years ago I met a man in a bar in Gettysburg ND I was bird hunting with friends. As I was talking to this man we were drinking and he was getting more and more drunk. He got this sad look on his face and told be that "You could kill a man out here and put his body in a draw somewhere and no one will ever find him". "The police won't even investigate". I always think about this when people go missing and how much space there is and how easy it would be for someone to "disappear".

One story in my country in the 1970s an elderly man murdered his wife and buried her in the back garden under an apple tree. The cops invesigated and found her. The thing was, he was in a street that backed on to the huge cemetery which had valley parts and drops in it. I guess he didn't have transport though as he used to walk along with his dog and a cart. We were only about 4 streets away from the murder at that time. Ironic though he was so close to the creepy giant tree filled and huge gullies type cemetery.

Yep. I'm especially suspicious of this kind of outcome when hunters go missing. Men out in the wild, sometimes drunk or just careless, shooting at anything that moves, only to discover they've shot another man instead of a moose or an elk or bear. What to do? Why, just hide the body and take the victim's gun and hope if the body is ever found, it's too destroyed by animal predation and exposure to reveal the cause of death. I'm pretty sure this happens more often than people think when outdoorsmen go missing.

And it's been known to happen - hunters accidentally injuring or killing themselves through careless gun-handling or clumsiness; hunters mistaking other hunters for deer or shooting them on purpose - maybe after an argument, for revenge, or whatever, and then claiming it was accidental or that their pal had "just vanished". And then there are the hunters who deliberately stalk human prey. That's happened a few infamous times where the killer was caught...you have to wonder how many times it's happened and the real killer is never even suspected.

Little oversight (if any) from government entities (of any kind) and there are some people who do whatever they want, to whomever they want. I lived in Kotzebue (which is north of Nome), the only way in or out is by airplane. Kotzebue serves as the central hub to the much smaller surrounding villages, and it's a "damp" village meaning you can buy a personal amount of alcohol per day with a special license, but the surrounding villages are all dry, so bootlegging is a really big thing up there. You can't travel over the tundra in the summer but fall, winter, and spring you can ride a snowmobile to the other villages, even though it is incredibly dangerous sine you have to cross many bodies of water that might not be completely frozen over. Many, many natives have gone missing transporting goods to outside villages. There was one instance where we only knew what happened because the snowmachine was still stuck halfway inside the ice of a large river. They assumed both riders must have been sucked under the ice and swept away. Most of the time the snowmachines and riders disappear completely though.

I remember The Fourth Kind. The movie put so much emphasis on its fictitious stories being true, especially with the back-to-back shots between the ‘dramatized’ vs ‘raw footage’ scenes, that it felt fake.

I remember watching this movie, and the one shot that gave it away, was the supposed raw footage from a police vehicle dash camera showing a flying saucer- it was the same flying saucer model used in the 1956 movie " This Island Earth ".
I can't quite understand why all of the seriousness in the beginning of the movie with Milla Jovovich giving a narrative on the missing people of Nome, and the UFO phenomenon, and then totally faking every aspect in the film.
This I believe was the beginning of the " found footage " type of films that I have come to hate and avoid at all costs.

Talking about these disappearances sure bring to light the very odd! I mean the snowmobile with no tracks? That one spoked me something fierce,I'm from Minn. and used to snowmobile often that is till one late nite adventure turned spooky as hell when I found myself alone and mobile just stopped for no reason and when listening while working on sled I couldn't hear absolutely nothing! Looking around I felt like I was being watched by something I couldn't see!. Very very scary!. When almost by luck another sled came by and assisted me I noticed life came back by simply noise, then got going again going forward behind the guy who helped me,while riding forward lost sight of guy who helped and finally caught up to my guys and they said no one else come through?. Man that was creepy weird scary.

as for missing native populations, i encourage people to be highly vigilant and to not speculate about the supernatural. native populations, especially our children and girls, are highly vulnerable - as for canada and alaska, look up something called a "starlight tour". cops will pick up natives - sometimes drunk, sometimes not - drive them out to the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night and leave them in the cold to walk back to town. most do not make it. and yes, it happens to this day. so im sorry to say, there is no mystery there - just abuse of power and negligence from the public

Life long Alaskan here : Here are a few cases of interest
    Circumstances of Disappearance
    1. Mary Wilson, 69, was last seen in Healy, Alaska on July 12 after staying the night with friends. Mary was reported missing on 07-14-2022 at 0130 hours, when her vehicle was located stuck at approximately 6.8 mile of the Stampede Trail near Healy. Inside the vehicle was an approximately two-year-old girl who Mary had agreed to watch for several days. Mary was last seen the morning of 07-12-2022 at a residence near Healy where she stayed the night with friends. Personal items belonging to Mary were located at approximately 7.8 mile of the Stampede Trail. Extensive searches of the area have been unsuccessful in locating her.
    2. 65-year-old Michael LeMaitre was competing in the Mount Marathon race in Seward, Alaska, which is south of the city of Anchorage. This was an extreme event and he was last seen on July 4, 2012 about 200 feet from the top of Mount Marathon, a 3022 feet high peak. He was never seen again and his body was never located despite extensive searching. Lost without a trace, not even clothing - black shorts, a black T-shirt and a black headband.
