I live around 15 miles from the Tunnel. I've walked a bit of it from either end, I've seen the Central Shaft, a 600 foot deep vent straight down to the tracks beneath. It's freezing cold and uninviting. A friend of mine rode his dirt bike through it. It's about 4.75 miles. When I met him at the Eastern Portal he couldn't wait to put the bike on the truck and leave. He said he felt like he was chased by a mob and rode as fast as he dared. "Never going near that place again"
Imagine his bike stumbles into some debris and falls crashing down and he has to walk the rest of the path in the dark, carrying his broken bike, maybe without light in a tunnel where other alone people disappeared or appeared strangled by themselves. Scary and dangerous indeed.
The telling of the protective ghost watching over Joe and saving his life on multiple occasions pulled at my heartstrings. It's heartbreaking to imagine a lonely, isolated soul trapped in the depths underground, using what opportune kindness they can manage to cope with the pain of that solitude.
It makes you wonder if, perhaps, the initial dig into the mountain brought out a malevolent entity which would be the cause of deaths, and maybe even corrupting the souls of those killed. However, there could then be those souls that, although tragically killed, are too benevolent to fall victim of the corruption. It would be a benevolent soul, such as this, which may naturally incline to oppose the malevolent plans. The near deaths seem awfully peculiar..: an unexpected, extremely fast "wild" train suddenly coming through; and then an electric power line suddenly breaking and landing right on the rail that Joe was working on, which would have killed him. Seems like a good vs. evil battle to me. ;-0
The benefits of civilization-power, transportation, housing, waste disposal, clean water-all are built from the blood, sweat, muscle, and life of innumerable men and women who toiled horribly, lived humbly, suffered, and died largely unremembered. My brother, myself and friends have camped in the Savoy State Forest in Western Massachusetts. A few miles away is the Hoosac Tunnel. We took photographs and walked inside for one hundred feet or so. At the entrance you can feel the cold air and smell of tar. We were lucky to see a train enter the tunnel. What a dark, long, slow ride for that train conductor.
I once saw a train come out with a hobo clinging the the side ladder of a freight car. As the train cleared East Portal doing about 30 MPH, he fell off and body surfed 20 feet further on the ballast. Hoosac is notorious for horrible ventilation and it was obvious by the smell he had been drinking. He was barely concious and all cut up. When he came round we asked him if we could go for an ambulance, but he said no. He refused any help. We drove to the nearby village of Charlemont and reported the incident to the police who said they'd contact the B&M Railroad Police. We never heard anything else about it.
@Nolan R If there isn't a seed there to begin with hard work and determination will at best only get you to mediocrity. Some call that seed "natural talent", others call it a gift from God.

I am a railfan that grew up in this area and some of my friends and family work on the B&M (now PASR). When your near either tunnel mouth the cold dampness and eerie feeling of the place grip you. When I asked a railroad buddy if we should walk in, he grimly refused. I asked if he meant the danger of the poor ventilation and danger of getting hit by a train. Hey, I just wanted to give a little correction and some extra context about the current state and operations of the Hoosac Tunnel. The Boston & Main Railroad no longer operates the line as they went bankrupt in 1970, and they hadn't run a train through it since 1958. In 2009 the tunnel transferred ownership to a joint venture between Pan-Am Railways and Norfolk Southern. They were running 8 trains a day through it and were making plans to expand it to allow double stacked shipping containers. Unfortunately in February of this year several large collapses closed the tunnel. Repairs are being made while freight is temporarily moving on the New England Central Railroad, Vermont Railway and on the CSX line. Edit: As of early April 2020 the Hoosac tunnel is reopened to rail traffic with daily temporary closures for engineering studies and further repairs. Norfolk Southern is currently running 8-10 trains a day through the tunnel. Its unknown currently whether the tunnel will be able to continue at its full 4.75 mile length, or if one or both entrances will need to be shaved back, removing the historic tunnel heads.
Trains were running continuously from opening in 1875 until today except for the occasional derailments and a couple of cave ins. It was a vital frieght route especially for several coal power plants that were operating in New England. The tunnel was single tracked in the early sixties and modified for double high cars. The B&M was in trusteeship but still operated from 1970 and worked it's way out of bankruptcy and sold to Timothy Mellon in1981. Currently industry rumors are it's up for sale again.

As a resident of Massachusetts, I appreciate the thorough research done in your presentation. I know all about this tunnel, or so I thought, but you uncovered many more small nuances of information unknown to me. One can drive over the tunnel when on Route 2 heading either to or from New York state; there is a sign in Florida, MA, that marks where the tunnel runs under the road. Nearby is a pulloff right before you get to North Adams. I stopped there once with my son and walked up into the woods. The feeling in that area was so eerie that we both stopped in our tracks and headed straight back to the car. Although I have been past it many times since, I have no wish to ever experience that again. I feel like not only are there the spirits of the miners in that area, but also Earth elementals and the protectors of the Earth that are linked back to before the time when Native Americans lived in this area. And they are resentful of human intrusion and are very protective of the area.

The Hoosac Tunnel had a cave in just last month... It has still not reopened, Pan Am Southern Railroad is currently detouring trains on the nearby Vermont Railway. The repairs apparently are very expensive.
William H. Baird the tunnel was re-opened last April after several cave ins occurred about 300 feet from the west portal. I am one of the workers who had to repair it, me and my coworkers would have tools go missing or get broken in weird ways. I hated my job for those 3 long months... we would hear a scream from a man at approximately 10:56 am give or take a minute or two. In two months after much digging, hammering and reinforcing, trains were able to reinforce the tunnel. It took three months until all repairs were completed however. This was one of the worst jobs I’ve ever seen, the tunnel was very neglected and we would hear water running even though there was no water, random explosion noises even though there was no explosives being detonated at the time and the occasional ghost was seen. I would run to my car one I’d left the helltunnel when my shift was over. I can’t say this enough, this was awful.
Yeah, it was the mountain alright. I just rolled my eyes at this and realized how stupid this was. I'm sorry, I'm just a bit on edge because of this whole quarantine thing. It's killing me.
I've walked through almost half of this tunnel way back in the late 90's... Spooky place, very dangerous. I got very sick with pneumonia, the air inside is bad.

GamerTag97 but Alaska was not transferred to the United States from the Russian Empire until 1867... meaning at the time this tunnel construction began, Alaska was still part of Russia and not the United States.
A bit of history: The first railway tunnel in the United States was the 900 foot Staple Bend Tunnel completed in 1833. It is located in Mineral Point, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, about 70 miles east of Pittsburgh. It is open to the public at no cost. The walking or bike trail (your preference)is the original railroad bed. It cuts through the beautiful Allegheny Mountains all while overlooking the Little Conemaugh River. All together it is a four mile round trip, if memory serves me right.

Bedtime Stories still at it: Hell yea, man. Let the Story begin!
@@ryanthompson2893 Thanks for the detailed reply. I would have loved to have traveled about lead B&M unit through there back in the day!
We visited this tunnel on a school camping trip when I lived in North Adam's. Didn't go in. Was pretty spooky, although I was in 4th grade.
Mountain: "AHHH OH GOD THERE CUTTING INTO ME AHHHHHH THE PAIN"
People: **GHOSTS**
*They're ?
@@SamK-vk7kb yes indeed, thank you for the correction
@@bournelucid Sorry
Yeah, it was the mountain alright. I just rolled my eyes at this and realized how stupid this was. I'm sorry, I'm just a bit on edge because of this whole quarantine thing. It's killing me.
I've walked through almost half of this tunnel way back in the late 90's... Spooky place, very dangerous. I got very sick with pneumonia, the air inside is bad.
I have absolutely no self control when it comes to Bedtime Stories. Can't save it until tomorrow.
I find if you save it for a couple of days, the next one is extra scary.
go barb !
I procrastinated watching the three latest videos for some reason, and today I got a call to come in later to work. No point going to sleep again, so here I am binging :D
Thank goodness for Bedtime Stories....Sure beats the doldrums of "social distancing"....
Some suggestions:
Pickens County Courthouse Alabama
The Phantom Steamboat of the Tombigbee River
The Hole that Will Not Stay Filled - Bill Sketoe
Just some thoughts.
Oh very nice!!! Now I can't sleep! 10/10 for Atmosphere and creep factor..well done!
How do you dislike a video that has no hate or nothing to offend anyone? Its not even annoying. Just a guy talking calmly over some great pictures.
maybe some people are big mad 24/7 so they just downvote everything? i like to picture them as those kentucky goblins.
bro wtf, i mean is there a video in youtube that doesn't have dislikes? it's a common thing
Some people roll their eyes at the idea of ghosts.
But it has 0 dislikes?
@@OhtheSuffering Well, who is forcing them to watch this? Somebody have a gun to their heads? SMH.
I live in Massachusetts in a town near this tunnel. It’s a very creepy spot I’ve never experienced anything personally but you best believe people know the stories
Thank you for the nice diversion. Everyone can use some good diversions right now!
Thank you for all of your hard work and awesome videos! Seeing your notification is definitely a highlight of a cold, snowy day, during the COVID-19 stay-at-home order here in Illinois!
Coronavirus: "I'll be the scariest thing people worry about all day!"
Bedtime Stories: "No, I don't think you will"
some ghosts in a tunnel i will never visit is not scary at all
@Beh Meh cant borders are closed right now
Bedtime Stories: "Hold my haunting."
@Spider oh the horror!!!!
If your scared of coronavirus your a moron or 150 years old
This story stands out amongst an already fine collection of stories. Well done. Narration, art work, and sound effects enhanced the story without over exaggeration. 👍
I was just out exploring supposedly haunted places in greenfield Ma and the hoosac tunnel got brought up in discussion. I open RUclips up right after I got home and this is the first video to pop up in my feed. Now that’s a creepy coincidence
Nick Jarvis there is a little spot on the road, or there was when I was a kid, just behind the food mart where your car would roll uphill. It was fun to do when skipping school.
Excellent. This is a nice respite from the reality we are all facing. Thank you and looking forward to your next story.
Just what I was looking for! Thanks guys!!!
Splendid job on the animations! The way that blue light transpired and how you narrated accompanied by the ambient music certainty made my skin crawl!
I was actually going to rewatch his smiling man video
Since that's my favourite video
Of his
When i got the notification
For this
The Smiling Man story freaks me out! It also reminds me of a quote attributed to Lon Chaney, Sr.: "There's nothing funny about a clown dancing alone in the moonlight."
That's pretty
Cool
Br
O
the only kotal fan in existence The Smiling Man is a classic.
I watched a show called Building Big when I was a kid that brought up this tunnel--spooked the ever loving heckballs out of me when I was a kid. Now I love it. Had not heard any of the stories in this video, tho. Thanks for posting this, guys!
I don't know if any one from the Channel is reads the comments but thank you for the content you produce, there always interesting! (I personally love the Ghost videos you produce and hope you make many more).
Clicked watch so fast I almost fell off the bed 😂 Been binging your videos since I stumbled on your channel a few weeks back. Gonna purchase one of your awesome shirts also.
This channel should have 1-2 million subs already. This content is unrivaled.
dying was prob the easy part
I live 30 minutes outside Boston so North Adams is a bit of a haul for me, but I’ve always been so fascinated by the hoosac tunnel and I really wanna go, great video guys!
Tyler Turcotte there is a great campground in Charlemont. Also lots of outdoor summer recreation to draw you. Tubing down the Deerfield from Zoar Gap is fun and Ziplining at Berkshire East is epic. Hoosac Tunnel isn't too far from there.
Man your videos are really getting me through this quarantine.
your*
Yep...now if I had some tp I'd be set! LOL!
The artwork gets better and better with each video
I'm having to turn up the heat to unchill my blood from the screaming. Also, I swear, when the bucket started moving, I thought I was gonna get jumpscared..
Prolific and interesting, every time. Thanks!
Does anyone else click the like before these stories even begin? ;)
Noticed your little badge of honour there 😉 Thank you for joining!
I do the exact same thing! You just know the episode will be top quality, without even seeing it
Yes!
Oh yes! These people produce some of the creepiest sh!t I've ever heard in my life. Grab my anti-depressants, sleeping tablets and toilette paper..with Bedtime Stories you know ur gonna get freaked out!
Guilty. lol
This is what I needed for this quarantine. Thank you!
Could you guys do a video on the Lizard Man sighted in South Carolina back in the late 80s?
Bedtime Stories: "In the Northernmost reaches of the United States"
Alaska: Am i a joke to you?
GamerTag97 but Alaska was not transferred to the United States from the Russian Empire until 1867... meaning at the time this tunnel construction began, Alaska was still part of Russia and not the United States.
So many ghost stories in Alaska though. >.>
Why do people keep using this copy and paste joke format? Does anyone have original thought anymore?
@@marhawkman303 not to mention Alien Abduction, and Cryptids too
@Eye Above All It's just as bad as the whole

Keep up the great work man!
Finally you are back! Hope videos will return to normal schedule soon. Keep up the great work!
Should do an episode on the tunnels in Australia true story I think there’s also a movie about it aswell homeless people going missing down there love your bedtime stories interesting and scary at the same time 😱 keep them coming.
Okay, this is one the most creepy and chilling stories I’ve watched on your channel.
Imagine being trapped clinging to a raft in the pitch black darkness with the slow feeling of suffocation taking its toll on you,
That's one of the most fucking terrifying things I could imagine
Infrasound is highly suspect in a situation like this.
Funny how I can't seem to wait until bedtime to watch any of these videos. Fantastic work. You always deliver the goods.
This is the only thing that makes my life come to a complete halt! And I love it! You guys are unrivaled in this game! 🏆
Great illustrations and narration, definitely subscribing.
Bedtime Stories and Lazy Masquerade both posting within 10 minutes of each other? Great way to fix a long day!!
Andrew Miller, I've never heard of the latter, I'll have a neb 👍🏻 thanks
And Dark Histories! I was flummoxed trying to figure out what to listen to first.
Check out the youtube channel : bob gymlan. It's really good too. Mainly about bigfoot but he has other stories and amazing black and white artwork
Hot dog! I love lm and bs :)
Nexpo is a really good underrated channel.
Interesting story felt sorry for the workers that had endured working in harsh conditions. The ghost sightings can be explained as souls yearning for peace some even earning it by saving a mans life twice. Hopefully all those that perished their are resting in peace.
Favorite show...since you balance your stories from ALL types of high strangeness. Good Work!
amazing as always, guys! The stories get better and better and creepier each time, as always, keep up the amazing work!!!
The Hoosac Tunnel just had some collapses last month. Convenient timing!
This page rocks, exactly what I have been searching for, thanks heaps, going through and watching all your vids now !
Can't even imagine the fear and sorrow of the men that slowly died in the darkness of that cave.
Discovered your channel tonight as a Recommended video on my RUclips feed... Very impressed! Subscribed... Very well written, excellent narration, and outstanding artwork and animations. Riveting history... intriguing events. May those restless souls find peace after coming to such sudden and tragic ends. May those who benefit from their sacrifice honour their memory. Rest In Peace men of the Hoosac Tunnel.
If I could be a patroen for any RUclips channel it'd be this one. I think it's great

Good episode. Being from Massachusetts I’ve heard and read a hundred Hoosac Tunnel stories and yours is the best!
Loved this story and I really hope to see more uploads ! Hopefully one soon about alien encounters.
Finally I've been binge watching all the vids time for something new..thanks guys love your work
Spoiler: It's just Old Man Witherspoon with a sheet over his head.
Why does he have a spoon?
@@ozmond2600 Because spoons are scary.
Yes! This is one of the better episodes taking it back to when you guys first started. Gave me goosebumps the whole way through!
Me: Now what am I going to do during self-quarantine?
Bedtime Stories: I got you, fam.
Nothing like a fresh video around bedtime. Thanks guys. Your channel is superb. Also, stay safe and take care :)
Finally another new episode! It was feeling like ages now lol
19:22 An Excellent Story. Thank You Very Much. I truly enjoyed it. Even if I had goose bunps, now and then.
Only a few more hours till sundown... then it'll be time to get SPOOKEH
Yep👍
So funneh :)
@Hannah Dyson That counts for ghosts too though :D They aren't allowed to leave hell to haunt people until after the lockdown :)
@Hannah Dyson someone's been reading the daily mail
It is now Aug 2022 but I'd still like to comment about Joe's experience. I have learned never to ignore what I call 'angel voices'. For example, if you ever 'hear' a 'voice' urging you to deviate from what you are doing, or a route you are on, do not dismiss it. Same for a strong gut feeling. It does not indicate a mental illness and could save your life. You'll know it when it happens.
There are more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of...
Look up the Moonville Tunnel in Ohio. It also have a very dark past.
I 🖤 this channel & I'll love to see more unexplained deaths. Those were quite interesting & thought provoking!!!
