    I think the main concern with this is that the better the system is the more you trust it and the less 'on guard' you become. Right now you don't trust it and your foot is ready to break. IF the system is good, in 6 months you'll just let it do it's thing. Then when it fails to detect a new mini roundabout you won't be ready to 'take charge' because your expecting it to be right as it 'always' is. I think it works great on a motorway to keep with the speed of traffic, but on a more technical road layout, especially with auto's its just not that hard to press the pedals yourself.

    Noticed a couple of times when approaching roundabouts where you intend to carry straight on,you start indicating on approach before you get to the roundabout. I was always taught that when going round a roundabout you indicate at the exit prior to the one you intend taking not on approach.

    Hi Luke, i also have that set up on a 19 plate DAF, it’s called ACC, (adaptive cruise control) which has 5 distance settings i also have an anti Lane departure sensor , I find them good to use but no so great when a car jumps into your gap in front, i also have to turn it off when overtaking other lorries, as it will drop speed at that critical moment when your close enough to manoeuvre out. Overall a good system, but remember it is a first step to putting us all out of work !!

    • @nasa1985
      @nasa1985 4 года назад

      Mad Muppet. The system in the Actros is actually called PPC... Predictive powertrain control. It’s leaps and bounds ahead of ACC regarding its capabilities and safety assist features. The tech that Mercedes are putting in their trucks now is absolutely outstanding.

    • @norm4260

    Amazing tech in that truck, I find it amazing how it can read the signs and adapt speed for corners and roundabouts. There is too much tech though which means there is more to go wrong like as a fail safe would you be told to carry a emergency set of clip on mirrors in case the screen that the mirrors are on fails?

  • @numberplateguy8511
    @numberplateguy8511 4 года назад

    18 plate daf have a similar feature
    Adaptive cruise control
    It reads the road for you but it reads the road all the time for you even when the feature is not turned on
    If a car cuts across the front of you or in traffic at 30 or 40 ish and you get a bit close to the vehicle in front and if a driver doesn't see the traffic backing up etc
    The truck takes over the controls and brings the truck to a stop and does not let the driver retake control until it has slowed the vehicle enough to a safe distance again

  • @chilllytube
    @chilllytube Год назад

    Interesting video. The detail in the smart cruise control is much much more informative than the one in my car, e.g. showing the speeds of other vehicles. The system can get data from updated sources. There is a crowd-sourced map called Openstreetmap. It is very useful and the data (not just the picture of the map) is all freely available. There are other paid-for sources too,

Anyway I look forward to seeing more , keep the videos coming , cheers! 👍

    There was a driver who works at my place, had a car bounce off the left hand side barrier into the side of his cab. Told the officer he side swiped her, that didn’t go down in her favour given all our trucks have cameras in all directions, and radar, they moan about those cameras as it’s ‘spying’ on them, safe to say he was glad they were there.

    I like the idea of the camera mirror less to break off with the over grown bushes and tree branches growing over the roads of Kent and Sussex . I reckon the replacement camera might be a bit more expensive than a mirror glass though.
    Maybe you could point out bad A road that need cutting back in if enough drivers get together about it councils may act or not highways England still haven't done anything about the A27 single carriage way near the long man its almost single file for trucks now. Cheers for the vlogs Luke.

      I agree, Luke done a great demonstration of the capabilities of the Actros but completely different circumstances to my reviews, Luke had the truck to use at his free will, I was attending media days with the brand and it's not quite at easy to do what you want with the very limited time you have.

    I've been using one of those for about 2 weeks. The cruise control is good although I bottle it sometimes and take control myself. The mirrors however are a nightmare, especially in the dark. I reverse onto loading bays 3 or 4 times a night and have taken to hanging out of the cab and ignoring the mirrors. Worse than useless bordering on dangerous.

    Nice video Luke. 👍 These things are great as safety features but I'd say we're a long long way off from fully automated. Our roads are not fit for it, especially for the last few miles off of the bigger roads. Some of the remote roads I deliver through are never going to be done without humans. We're talking mirrors in bushes and low branches, a couple of inches clearance on turns and shunts at junctions even for rigids. I'd also be concerned about the lorry picking up on a 50 sign and accelerating to that as up here in Scotland and also in NI we're still at 40 limits for trunk roads and 50 for dual carriageways. I doubt the lorry knows if it's in England or not. Things like this do need to be developed though as it seems in these days of phone distractions etc. people just can't be trusted to drive properly with their full attention.

    All the truck needs to do know is stear it self and bam you got a driverless truck. My daf has a similar system adaptive cruse. The scania with the next gen uses the satnav to read when there is hills and simula obstacles and will pre select the gears.
    I predict in my driving carrie there will be driverless Trucks, witch will me huge job losses and for those who remain may have to accept low pay. Lot of this technology is cool and amazing but I’ve got a feeling we are being used a testers for the tech for driverless trucks. There may be some danger with this predictive drive train mainly with the Driver becoming complacent and some drivers concentration could be affected and response time affected in emergency situations. Good Vlog and time will tell with this tech.

    But where merc win is because in other trucks when a driver has the vehicle set at 50mph the etc if a driver applies the brakes they have to reset the cruise control etc
    But as merc is effectively a limiter it prevents the vehicle going above 50mph for example but a driver can still apply the break but the truck will not let the driver go above 50 etc as the limiter is not affected by the application of the break etc

    Thanks for this, very interesting. It seems to know about roundabouts long before they're visible, implying it's getting that information from the GPS route planning system (which might not be up-to-date?). I wonder if it gets the speed limit info from GPS (could be out of date?) or physical signs on the road (could be obscured by foliage or other vehicles?). Are the "mirrors" reversed left and right (as real mirrors would be) or simple camera images (could be tricky to get used to?). These aren't meant as criticisms of the truck (and certainly not of you), I'm just asking questions out of curiosity.

    • @Jonc25

      With you on the gps and maps, it can take more than 12 months for these things to get updated with new locations and road changes, its a good tool but its not 100%. Google maps gets it wrong regularly especially if location is situated next to motorway, it will take you to the motorway carriageway if your not on the ball.

    Not sure I like the cruise control auto slow/speed up part of the truck. I like that it does detect the other vehicles speeds but for me I would fear that cause I not doing anything on motorways that I would lose my alertness cause you grow used to how the system works therefore you grow over dependent on the system???? Also with the alertness comes sleepness, cause your not having to speed up or slow down and constantly making your brain tick over as vehicles come and go from overtakes etc. Don't get me wrong I'm not against the future stuff, but I do wonder if this is actually a good thing to have in vehicles in general

    95% of accidents involve human error. If automated systems help the driver to ensure where possible that potential is reduced then I'm all for it . Can't see in the next ten years how the system can operate the steering with all the variations our A roads through up especially parked cars etc etc . Tesla have auto pilot for cars but it's only really suited for motorways and dual carriageways let alone tractor and trailer on tight b roads and they are at the forefront of these systems.
    Embrace it . It's a support for the driver.

      Unless you use type of trucks, you will understand that they can cause accidents too, mine picks up objects or obstructions that dont exist, for example mine thinks it's going to hit a bridge so it will anchor up, if something is behind me it's going to cause an accident. These bridges are motorway and dual carriageway so plenty of room to get through, also it will anchor up on going through big enough gaps, not 100% rather drive old school

    see.... i find a lot of comments on this video hilarious because i don't think most people realise how horrific and totally non standard any yard we enter is.... i would love for a computer to figure out what the fuck you're supposed to do in some places when as a driver you have to get out find someone be told to find someone else then be told to move to a place to wait to be told to move somewhere else then swing round and back into the newly invented *this is where we unload this time* area
    when my truck can do that for me........ i'll be having a brew

    The truck is great until it makes a mistake (which it will) and hits something or someone then you are responsible and the law will say you were not in control of your vehicle !

    Need a system on trucks that prevents it from overtaking another truck going 1mph slower on a dual carriageway taking forever to get past holding up a line of traffic behind it.

    I got to say technology is a great thing, but then like that example your driving being 9/10. that kind of thing should not be monitored by the company, even if it is a good score, it should only report things like this vehicle has been involved in an accident, or a serious accident and requesting emergency response, and vehicle location when involved in an accident, for say the driver is unresponding to phone calls etc. or to send reports back to the depot that the vehicle has got a serious say electrical, or mechanical fault, or potential fault so that the depot can order parts while the vehicle is on the road, plus the depot knows of the exact reason for a driver to report a fault so that they can attend with the right equipment rather than a general diagnosis like my battery is flat, or the headlight isn't working even the replacement light isn't working, but the bulb is ok, type of thing. but driving, unless a very serious fault shouldn't be allowed to be monitored back at the depot.

    I’m with the others here, you’ll be calling it a bag of shit as it drives past you DRIVERLESS as you’re walking to the job centre. I’m not stone aged but I remember when trucks needed truck drivers. My VW T6 has all this kit and I hate it, it spends its time deactivated.
