It was a great year for metal, hard to argue with the quality of music from Gojira and Mastodon especially this go round but DT has been deserving of this nod for YEARS and The Alien is the band in absolute top form. I'm so happy for the band, a true set of world leading musicians that deserve to be known as such on a mainstream level. Very well spoken, too, John, you make a great spokesperson for the band!
"Wow, this is absolutely insane," Petrucci said while accepting the award. "On behalf of the entire band, I'd like to thank the Recording Academy and everybody who voted for us. You know, they used to tell us our songs were way too long, we used weird time signatures and there were too many guitar solos. In fact, this song is in 17/8, so try to tap your foot to it. But, we just won a Grammy, so I'm glad we didn't listen... All the Dream Theater fans around the world, you guys rock! We love you. For fans of prog and prog metal, stay true to your art - it's alive and well."☺️
Thank you very much.
I didn't understand much of his speech.
Thank you for telling us what he said.
Why?
Thank you. We all watched the same video.
Who would’ve thought that Dream Theater would finally take home their first Grammy literally 30 years after their major label debut…great goin guys 🤙
But let’s be honest here…I&W, Awake, Scenes, Six Degrees, Octavarium, Distance…nearly every Dream Theater album has at least one or two Grammy-worthy moments on it. Hell, if it were up to me…Awake would be preserved in the national recording registry, so my opinion is a bit swayed.
Nah, Scenes from a Memory, dawgie.
Your exclusion of Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos is outrageous man
Hell yeah. Awake should absolutely preserved in the National recording registry.
Yay! Good job boys, I’m glad you won this one
Following DT since 1992, you guys have been there throughout my whole life, this is finally the recognition for all that this band has offered to the world of metal and music. Congrats guys, well deserved 👏 DT4L
I was right there from 92 on as well... It's about time
Its actually a nice speech JP! It shows them that your music is complex and it deserves a Grammy! Congratulations! DT!!!
One of the greatest guitarists in the world taking the stage and the audience dead without reaction... they really don't know what real music is. ❤Congratulations! Dream Theater and John P❤
WOW... music is still being recognized. Well I'll be darned. Petrucci is the living incarnation of the term virtuoso! Among the very best guitarists ever to have walked the Grammy stage and the Earth!
Congratulation DT,you should have won the Grammy 10 times already for your amazing outstanding music !!!
Shocking!
The best rock band in the world at this time is actually recognized!
Congrats.
You deserve it!
Congratulations, almost 35 years ago, little did i know first time seeing an unknown band playing a small club called Sparks, completely left my jaw on the floor, a year or two later our two bands opening for Zebra at Sundance, now accepting a Grammy. We all knew from the first note 35 years ago, this was inevitable, Big Congratulations to all of you, and many, many more!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💽💽💽💽💽🥇🏆🏆🏆🏆🎼🎹🎤🥁🎸
Everyone in that room was like “who’s Dream Theater?” Lol. Nobody at the Grammy’s knows “good” music!!!! The only decent award IS “best metal performance” & what the FUCK does that mean anyways?!?! Metal has & will always have 100 times the talent than any other form of music aside from jazz/ funk & classical
There is good music in almost any genre. One just has to dig a little. Not sure if these artists go to the grammys though, I don't watch them.
John's speech is as clever and brilliant as his guitar playing
Would love to see John Myung receive the award on stage.
Wonder if he would've spoken at all....lol
@@enricopallazzo2987 walks on stage, takes the Award, nods to the audience, walks off the stage 😂
"well, thanks...bye" :D
@@Ray_2112 John Petrucci Hey John, would you like to give the acceptance speech if we win the Grammy?" John Myung "No"
He would have a very thoughtful and articulated speech that transcends time and space only to be cut short by the host after a few seconds.
I’ve been a Dream Theater fan for 20+ years. I’ve seen them live 9 times. This feels like a culmination of my fandom and I couldn’t be more proud. Congrats to the band and all of their fans. And to Mike Portnoy: You deserve this too!
The song the backing band plays during the walk up is God Hates a Coward. There’s a live version where Mike Parton kills it.
What a lively crowd. Although 3/4 of them did not know who the band is, the silence was justified by the praises of their fans worldwide. I've followed them since day 1 when I bought When Dream and Day Unite on cassette on a whim in my local Pamida store. I've followed them around since, congrats guys!
I'd say 17/8 of the crowd didn't know who they were 😏
Congrats!! Well deserved!! I can proudly say my 16 yr olds first concert is DT..she absolutely loved it!!
Been listening to DT for 16 years so great to see them being acknowledged in the mainstream like this and JP talking about staying true to prog metal. Well done guys!
1st - Congrats DT!! 2nd - this audience had no clue. Just absolutely hilarious. Seemed like they were scared of the long haired guy and then when he opens his mouth they're thinking, "Hey this guy speaks real good!" Bahahaha. The "Normal" world of music today just absolutely blows - JP you are too kind to grace them with your presence.
I feel this award is for DT and all progmetal fans around the world. Thank you JP for representing us and i hope you get more in the future.
we love you
Wow i ´ve been a fan since Awake,now the Grammy´s have awoken...at last
The circle of vengeance for prog metal is complete!
Finally DT wins a Grammy! So happy for you guys!
Congrats!! While we all know being accepted by the "main stream" has never been a focus of DT, it has to be nice to get some recognition for all your hard work. Guess I have to start referring to you guys as "The Grammy Award-winning band, Dream Theater" 🙂
I'm so happy for you guys!! You damn well deserve it. You will always be the biggest most incredibly talented and inspiring band ever (IMO).
I love you so much, wish you all the best!!
John, I doubt many in the audience even know what a time signature is.
Been here a long time my friends. Since I snuck into a DT show in the mid 90's because I was underage for the venue. This is long overdue. DT is one of the best ever.
YEEEEEEEEEEES, CONGRATULATIONS GUYS, YOU SHALL ALWAYS BE THE BESTS
Great job DT! You guys have deserved that award for decades and it's fantastic to see you finally receive it. Thanks for all of your amazing work and I hope people continue to see how inspired and rich your music is.
I'm so happy for you guys, you totally deserved it for years of hard work and dedication. You've been an inspiration and your music is the soundtrack of my life for 30 years now, I love you guys.
Been a fan since the awake album , this has been such a long time coming ! Welcome back Mike ! And keep the spirit carry on!
Would have been funny to watch the audience squirm in their seats had they played even just the first thirty seconds The Alien 🤘
Notice this 1:00. John is a beast at tempo!! The band stopped playing just when he stopped in front of mic
Yes, noticed this also!
So well-deserved, The Alien is incredible, and the band is still innovating after all these years. So glad I saw y'all in Atlanta this tour, night to remember!
Hopefully not a NIGHTMARE to remember… 🥁 😉
@@almightyhotdoglady5383 eyyyyyyyy
You could say after that pun, “I’ll never be the same”
It is about time they got a Grammy!! The Alien is a pretty awesome song, and you have to be a world class musician to play it whether it’s the guitar, bass, keyboard, or drums. Finally a band that has practiced a lot, and I really mean A LOT, wins a Grammy!! Them not getting recognized for their music would be the equivalent of Beethoven’s music being ignored in the classical world. So happy for my favorite band!! I love you guys!! 👍😁😎.
I saw Dream Theater in concert back in March. One of the best experiences of my life. It's really amazing to see that Petrucci thanked his fans here. It really shows a lot about them. Thank you, Dream Theater
This is how acceptances speeches should be, well done John! Congratulations!
In another universe John Myung acted like Will Smith.
@@psimbyosis8162 😆😆😆
2 minutes of #JohnPetrucci worth more than the contemporany music.
Super proud of the boys for this! You guys deserved this one with what you put out on this last album. Congrats, guys! John Petrucci bringing down the house with the Prog Metal joke xD.
Dream Theater made me learn, that Dream Theater is much more than just a ''prog metal band'' with a catchy name.
It's a new paradigm in which you can experience the magic of Music in many levels. It's about Art in its pure form. It made me appreciate Life in a new way 💖
Completely deserved award! Your spirit carries on, on every fan you touch, guys...
great Words, Well Spoken!
Well said, Veronica.
I think exactly what you say. They are showing us a different way in feeling music. Excluding The Beatles (they are the creators of rock music), Dream Theater is the best band ever.
true ,their music keeps getting more and more amazing . on the scene no band like them.
So proud of the band! Winning a grammy is so huge! There wasnt another band up for this award that even came close to DT!
For some reason I thought the band was gonna play part of the Alien after the announcement lmao
So proud of DT, this is so heart warming.
THE best band on the planet!! I’ve followed them since 93 seen them countless times in many countries.. May they long continue.. Love them.
Well deserved guys! Longtime fan since 1996 and I couldn't be happier right now! Carpe Diem!
Seize the day! And live another day DT!
Speech was spot on, this is honestly a win for these genres, that while progressively (no pun intended) more niche, it's still relevant and prevails, which is of course quite refreshing.
Was not expecting "God Hates a Coward" to be what the live band plays when DT is called up, thats pretty awesome
This is amazing, Dream theater is my favorite band
