Gerrit Peacock That “garbage ass movie” won the Oscar because of Harvey Weinstein. This video does a good job explaining why Gwyneth Paltrow won the Oscar: ruclips.net/video/6tihITlPAn4/видео.html .
Rebekah Roams any. She definitely deserved a nomination in 2016s “arrival” only lost 2013 “American hustle” bc cate blanchett won. Her supporting roles have gotten 5 nominations and I think she should’ve won for “the master” and “The fighter”
They won because of Harvey's campaigning. A typical movie campaigning usually costs about $250,000 but Harvey reportedly spent $5 million on Shakespeare In Love. Saving Private Ryan should have won best picture.
TheGabrielmugue I personally think Julia Roberts deserved her Oscar for Erin Brockovich. I think a lot of these ladies in this category deserved the Oscars they won: Reese Witherspoon, Renee Zellweger, and Jennifer Connelly all deservedly won.
TheGabrielmugue Not the point. Just because she already had one doesn't mean she didn't DESERVE the other. Also, maybe there was a good reason that Julia Roberts didn't have one already?

Zellweger won because she'd been robbed of a statue for "Chicago." The Oscars constantly do that: Give someone a consolation prize for being snubbed recently.
I love Cate in both "Elizabeth"-movies but she shouldn't have won over Fernanda Montenegro in 1999. Watch Montenegro's performance in "Central station"!
Her role was more of a supporting role as opposed to both Julianne and Meryl. However, Nicole wasn’t going to beat Catherine Zeta-Jones in the supporting category. Nobody was. Truth is best actress was a weak category that year.
I love the hours to death, but honestly she was the weakest link out of the three leading ladies in the movie, Moore being the strongest. Out of the best actress lineup it should've been Moore or Zellweger who won. The saddest part is the academy had the chance to reward Moore for either of her fantástic performances that year in The Hours and Far From Heaven, and instead gave the Oscar to her for the subpar still Alice.
I have to disagree about Whoopi Goldberg and Marisa Tomei being on this list. A great comedic performance is just as good as a great dramatic performance. Oftentimes dramatic performances come off as mechanical and pretentious. Comedy is hard- you can't fake it. Drama has so many more tricks that can be used to achieve it's desired effects.
Yea I really liked Marisa's performance in my cousin vinny. I think overall she is a convincing actress, like her performance in slums of Beverly Hills. Comedy or not you believe her portrayal of a character when you watch her or at least I do. :)
+Rhaegar Targaryen Marisa Tomei is a great actress, proven by her subsequent nominations for dramatic roles (In the Bedroom, the Wrestler). Just because a performance is comedic doesn't mean it's not challenging. Comedy is hard, and isn't recognized/awarded enough!
+Rhaegar Targaryen An example I like to use regardin the difficulty of comedy is Julianne Moore. Moore can't do comedy. She had a role in one of the greatest comedies of all time, Big Lebowski, but she's not a comic. She's the straight role in that film. Evolution required her to be funny, and she's not, and that goes for every comedy she has been in. She's terrible. She just can't do it. Tomei did the comedy really well, but she can also do drama, among many other things. She gets way too much flak, in a bad way, but any time I watch My Cousin Vinny, I enjoy the movie. She doesn't annoy at all. On the other hand, there are many other roles I can never rewatch because they annoy the hell out of me.
I reread your initial comment and I still disagree. I haven't seen my Cousin Vinny but in the excerpt where I see Marisa Tomei, I am not convinced at all, in the excerpt where I see Whoopi I am not convinced. I can't juge a performance with two minutes of acting though. But I would still disagree with your definitions of comedy and drama ending with the idea that comedy is harder than drama. They're just different.
The ONE I totally disagree with is Nicole Kidman in The Hours...if you have ever read Virginia Woolf and imagined her in your head, then Kidman's performance was SPOT ON, and she richly deserved that Oscar!!!
Absolutely!!! There are a lot of arguments made in this video that make no sense, but the mere inclusion of this performance in the "Dishonorable Mentions" segment, leads me to believe that this list was compiled from a cursory Google search, and not from informed opinion.
I agree. The movie overall was a thing of beauty especially in addressing the elusiveness of depression. She was mesmerizing not to mention the gorgeous score by Philip Glass.
My thoughts exactly. Everyone is praising the movie and I went to see it. I must say, I was seriously underwhelmed. I don't get the hype. The story is pretty basic. Acting not at par.
Freedfg She wasn't just panting. There were many other lines of dialogue. You clearly weren't paying attention to the movie. The movie has many other good parts to it. The emotional resonance drew me in a lot.
Back then I had JUST broken up with a clone of the stalker type Glenn Close portrayed so brilliantly. The movie was seriously impactful for me. Agree 100%, Glenn Close should have won. I remember late-80's feminists at the time OUTRAGED that the movie was being received so well because they perceived it as a "setback" for professional women who happened to be single. Myuh-huh. The social justice warriors/idiots who whined about that obviously never met my ex. She was about an inch away from boiling a rabbit in my kitchen before I got a restraining order.
Juan Bertini Kidman was ok in the hours, but great in To Die For. The year she won for The Hours should have been Julianne Moore for Far From Heaven. By far, the best work that year. Kidman won because Tom left her that year. Moore had two great performance, and one of them was in The Hours, which she was also nominated for and most both. Although she did finally win for Still Alice, it should have been her second.
Thank you for the Oscar's HERstory. None of that means that Kidman gave an "underwhelming" performance. You said it yourself, she was "ok" in The Hours. As a hardcore fan of Virgnia Woolf, I think she was brilliant. She clearly doesn't deserves to be in this Top 10.
Juan Bertini Yes, she was ok, but ok is hardly Oscar worthy. Both Streep and Moore were also in the film, and she looked like a ham next to them. She even has the distinction of being the only Oscar winner, to also be chosen for worst performance of the year, for the very same film, not to mention, the only Oscar winner unable to win any of the major critics awards. That night just have to do with the fact that Moore won most of them for Far From Heaven, and the other big one, New York, went to Diane Lane, although Heaven won Picture, director, supporting actress, supporting actor, cinematography, with Moore's performance finishing second there. I guess at this point, it makes no difference. They've both won. It's just that Kidman won for The wrong film. It should have been for To Die For.
Can't say I agree with any of the critics. The three of them stole the category and they were all really good. Julian got it later on, and very well deserved as well, and Meryl must be by now tired of getting so many awards lol.
Julia Roberts mouth can fit two maybe three you know what easily. She took the deal as well. She can't really act. Pretty Woman was silly. What prostitute has perfect straight teeth? My girlfriend doesn't even have her own dental plan. This is media and celebrity hype yo.
Both films are overrated. A Simple Plan, Truman Show, Thin Red Line and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels were all better, more original and daring films. Saving Private Ryan had unoriginal characters and uninspired writing...not to mention the most shameful continuity screw up of all time. (We were purposefully decieved into thinking the old man at the start of the film was Tom Hanks) You dont lie to your audience, ever.
Culraven are you serious, I never thought it was Tom Hanks at the beginning, and movies lie to their audiences all the time, take the La La Land ending for examples
Marissa Tomei in my opinion DESERVED that Oscar!! I liked the fact that she won for a comedy movie instead of a drama or musical like they always put in those categories.
+Calvin Robinson I found Fernanda Montenegro' s performance the best that year, she should've won. But i doubt hollywood would give an award to a non english speaker actress.
+Marigeousp Well, considering, Sophia Loren and Penelope Cruz have won previously not sure they wouldnt. I still believe it should have been either Streep or Blanchett.
+Calvin Robinson Yes but they can speak english do you know what i mean? And for the academy recognise an actor that is not from hollywood environment is so much rare, so i guess its not much about art but really about the industry, but that's pretty obvious. Anyway, let's not get into that :p. But yes i totally agree with you guys. If Streep or Blanchett have won, it would've been much better then Paltrow.
How is J-Law for Silver Linings not on in this list? She was okay/good in it but not Best Actress worthy, plus Chastain in 0Dark30 was much better that year
+MissMel9110 I personally believe that if Harvey Winstein (one of the producers for Shakespeare in Love) didn't bully the oscar voters, Blanchett would have won.
Maybe you're right but the same year wre nominate Salma Hayek in Frida, Julianne Moore in Far from heaven, Diane Lane in Unfatithful and Renee Zellweger in Chicago. It was a very difficult year for women.
Kidman was superb in that film, that is the reason, she got the bafta, golden globe and the oscar... She was the most memorable role in the hours... her presence was flawless
AussieMan Moore was a double nominee that year, actually-nominated for Supporting Actress in The Hours and Best Actress in Far From Heaven. Both performances were Oscar-worthy, but she had to wait almost 15 years to finally win the award for Still Alice.
Paltrow should not of won for Shakespeare in Love. Cate Blanchett blew all the other nominees out of the water. I always wondered if Paltrow won because of her godfather who is Stephen Spielberg and her dad who was also a major powerhouse in hollywood.
Yeah, and Steven Spielberg directed the movie everybody said should have won Best Picture in 1999 at the Oscars: Saving Private Ryan. Also, Gwyneth's mother is an actress too: Blythe Danner.
I think we all now know the real reason Gwynnie won-her close and personal relationship with the hideous abomination of a human being that is Harvey Weinstein.
Fernanda Montenegro was the one who blew the other nominees out of the water. I'd rank Emily Watson second out of the nominees that year. I also think Ally Sheedy should have been nominated as well. I prefer Paltrow's performance over Blanchet, who I actually love, because I can't abide by that soapy, over-the-top version of Elizabeth I's story with all its shock value with Blanchet overacting and chewing up the scenery.
They thought favoring those two women would get them favoribality among their audience. Due to the fact both of them have high box office numbers compared to kidman. So they figured their viewers would prefer them praising two of the most overpraised actresses.Boy did it backfire. This channel does no research. I doubt they even watched the performances in full. This channel only cares about traffic.
+vanna kinder Since you care so much about “research”, how about you actually do some of your own. Watchmojo’s videos are user voted. If you wanted to see Lawrence on this list you should have voted for her.
Oh, Marisa Tomei's courtroom scene is one of the best ever. She deserved the Oscar for that alone. And no, it was not just great writing. I also liked Cher in Moonstruck.
Moonstruck is not the best movie of that year but Cher actually did an amazing job and the film has its merits. She’s extremely underrated as an actor, some of her films are truly great movies, Suspect and Mask among the best.
@@pakese30 I'm not saying that Moonstruck is a bad film, or that Cher's performance was poor. What I'm saying is that it isn't Oscar-worthy. The Oscars are for the best films, performances etc. - which Moonstruck isn't. Cher is an above-average actress, but she's not one of the best & Moonstruck isn't her best performance. She acted better in Mask.
Andrew Smith didn’t mean to sound like I was getting on your case mate, was only stating my feelings about the movie. I do agree that there were other more deserving movies that year, and that the other actresses work especially Glen Close’s part in Fatal Attraction was a more worthy part to receive an Oscar especially as her work has yet to be honoured in such a way, however I do think Cher’s portrayal was worthy of note, and that she is better than many give her credit for. It’s unfortunate that the work she’s had done has now limited her ability as an actress but love her all the same lol.
@@pakese30 I'm puzzled at Fatal Attraction not winning any of the Oscars it was nominated for, and Glenn Close not having won any of the Oscars or BAFTAs she has been nominated for.
@@tymaa9349 it's her who made it so good bro . I mean she isn't pretending and she makes the audience to believe as character so true . I didn't see Jennifer Lawrence I saw Tiffany maxwell

She was outstanding in Birth, that close up scene alone is a masterpiece. Just say that you hate her and get over it. You’re all over the comment section. You don’t have that much knowledge about her filmography and you look pathetic
Marvin Omar Menjivar Alvarez all of these performances aren't bad they just not happen to be deserving the Oscar coz there were much more superior performances, Julianne Moore possibly gave the best performance of the year in Far From Heaven
agree so much and I actually love her but that performance had nothing Oscar worthy in it...plus the overdue factor shouldn't have played into the decision at all since she hasn't given an award worthy performance up to then anyways!
+David G She hasn't won an award every time she's in a movie xD she's won three of 19 Oscar noms so the claim Meryl wins for being Meryl is really quite laughable.
Cher was PERFECT and had already deserved to win for "Silkwood" and "Mask"! To call her win a joke is plain wrong! Her Brooklyn Italian accent was perfect and she WAS hands-down the Best Actress that year! It's not easy to achieve such a perfect balance of slapstick and reality with good results.
I think comedic performances are looked down upon by movie snobs. Marisa Tomei and Whoopie Goldberg's performances were memorable and found themselves on the list too.
A lot of times people seem to win for having been nominated and losing a year or two prior. Cher was better in Silkwood and Mask than Moonstruck, Nicole Kidman was better in Moulin Rouge than The Hours, Russel Crowe was better in Gladiator and The Insider than A Beautiful Mind, Jennifer Connely was better in Requiem for a Dream. It happens all the time. Other times they just give wins to people who make money for the industry like Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Lawrence.
Seriously? You really think Nicole Kidman didn't deserve her Oscar for the hours? Like, have you even seen the movie? And you chose her for this video over JLaw, whose Oscar win was so undeserving?
Whoopi Goldberg deserved to win in 1985 for "The Color Purple". Even so, her win for "Ghost" was well-deserved! Without her the movie wouldn’t have succeeded. She was perfect...
@@Saintinthecity-wh9nl That's not true...the part was not even written with a black actress in mind for the part. Truly, Goldberg deserved to win for her debut in "The Color Purple" even more.
That's because the media and everyone in the industry totally think she deserved it.... They love her. She really deserved it for Winter's Bone, though.
Lawrence won because the industry was prepping her to be the next star. Good actor, but that was the wrong year when Emmanuelle Riva was SO much better in Amour.
As much as I enjoy Sandra Bullock, her win for "The Blind Side" over Meryl Streep's captivating and luscious performance as Julia Child was as unsatisfying as it was bewildering.
Yea, that was the only one I really didn't agree with. The moment they said it I was totally caught off guard. I thought she had a terrific performance and her and Pesci's scenes made that movie.
I personally think that Nicole Kidman shouldn't be "honoured" with a dishonorable mention; her performance in 'The Hours' was breathtaking and stunning!
Any list of underwhelming Actress wins that doesn’t include Grace Kelly in 1954’s “The Country Girl” is itself underwhelming. Plus, she stole the Oscar from Judy Garland in “A Star Is Born.”
Great actress though, and her performance in Hitchcock's Dial M For Murder and Rear Window were better. Even her most famous film High Noon maybe could have snagged her a Best Supporting Actress win on a better day.
lousy list. i agree with most of the picks, but they just did not consider anything before the 60s, i mean, how can you make this list without including grace kelly (against judy garland) and judy holliday (against gloria swanson and bette davis in some of the most iconic female performances of all time).
I have tried to watch that movie a few times. I just didn’t see it. However, knowing that Harvey knows how to Oscar Bait answers a lot of questions. BTW I love ‘Chicago’ I’m surprised so many here don’t like it. The singing and dancing take it up a notch and CZJ is married into Hollywood Royalty so that’s that
One HUGE oversight for this list, in my opinion, is Sandra Bullock's win for "The Blind Side." Her performance was pedestrian at best, and her regional accent was literally all over the place. And to think she won over Meryl Streep in the terrific "Julie and Julia" AND Gabourey Sidibe in the incredible role of "Precious" is just a slap in the face.
Tommy80 Completely agree. I was aghast when Paltrow won and winslet was overrated in The Reader. Winslet is a terrific actress though. Binoche is another undeserving win in a lightweight role.
People tend to judge comedies for not being good art. But honestly, well pulled off comedy is pretty much just as hard as dramatic performaces. People don't like whoopi goldberg's win for ghost cause she was playing a comedic character.
+Balcon Frances Her British accent is awful! And she always look, to me, like she should take a laxative before she goes on set, as she appears constipated.
Respectfully disagree. Kidman was absolutely amazing in The Hours. I was riveted to the screen when she appeared. Her acting was flawless, intense and heart breaking. She DESERVED that Oscar.
Zarahemla Dela Cruz Naomi Watts' acting on The Impossible make me fright and even make me cry. She's totally amazing. I hope Watts gonna win one in near future
Zarahemla Dela Cruz exactly her performance was a typical rom com role not even a gr8 women centric role which is the symbol of Best Actress at Oscars I really don't know who much bribe would have been given for her win
Shd is great and I love that film but as a critic said at the time, why was Rosie Perez not even nominated for playing the same type of role in "White Men Can't Jump".
The #1 most underwhelming Best Actress Oscar Wins from was by Judy Holliday "Born Yesterday", when Bette Davis "All About Eve" or Gloria Swanson "Sunset Boulevard" should have won.
I used to feel the same. I thought Swanson was the definite winner that year. BUT I have to admit that Judy was brilliant in that role. Swanson and Davis were in their element. Brilliant comedy comes from a totally different place. Marisa Tomei, although many thought her win was a travesty, in my mind deserved that award for brilliant comedic acting.
Naomi Watts for the impossible... She was incredible... It was scary... With her vomiting and stuff... She actually made me believe she was about to die... :|
it's important to remember that an actors best isn't necessarily the years best. Moore and Zelwegger that year were better, imo, and far more deserving.
+Eman Hashim I agree. I like her and the film was good, but it played more like a cable movie of the week, nothing Oscar worthy about it or her performance.
@ She won the Oscar because Erin Brockovich is exactly like that herself. Have you ever seen an interview with her or seen her speak? Julia nailed it, even if it was mostly because the actress and the person she was cast as are basically two identical peas in a pod already. She deserved the win for that reason. She is basically Erin's identical twin seperated from birth. They even have the each same accent and personality.
@@angelmora3660 I have to disagree. Geraldine Page won that Oscar against Whoopi Goldberg and Geraldine Page deserved that Oscar. The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Oscars and won 0 - which is shameful on the Academy - but Geraldine Page owned that category that year for me.
Cher was pretty great in Moonstruck, a movie that combined comedy and drama. Olympia Dukakis was also memorable in that film. I think some folks like to disrespect Cher because of her infamous concert performance aboard the aircraft carrier.
Why is Nicole Kidman in the hours underwhelming? She portrayed so well with depth and pain. With the nose and other things, I can relate her to Virginia Woolf
“Reese Witherspoon’s accent had been criticized” By whom? She’s from middle Tennessee and the Cash family lived in middle Tennessee. I think she sounded fine.
gadget00 Maximilian Schell in JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG was the wiser choice for my money.I preferred Mr. Newman's win for THE COLOR OF MONEY. He was certainly the award-worthy Runner-upon numerous occasions.
+gadget00 Lets not forget that the Academy usually tries to make amends when an Oscar doesnt go to a given actor/actress for a cleary better performance. Examples right above on this video: Judy Dench for the Queen in Shakespeare in Love, after losing an Oscar when she was, well, playing a queen.
+eyyodc Because Geraldine Page was long overdue her Oscar. They nominated her several times, and she finally won for that year. Sadly, she passed away the year after (1987).
Absolutely correct..Carrey Mulligan's incredible performance in An Education or Gabourey Sidibe's layered performance in Precious deserved the Oscar...
Shakespear in love was one of the worst films yet was heavily loaded with Oscars and it brutally stole the award of Best picture from Saving Private Ryan. Shame! Apart from your list, I think Whoopie was deserving, her Performance in Ghost was commendable.
'Brutally stole'? Give me a break! No one stole anything from anyone. It just didn't win enough votes. For the record, Saving Private Ryan had an extraordinary opening scene but the rest of it was an anti-climax. I know I'm not the only one who thinks this, too.
Weinstein at his best - selling his films and stars!! Everybody knew of his atrocious behavior but nobody said anything cause, well, they' are a selfish lot.
Helen Hunt was amazing in As Good as It Gets. You seem don't think that acting in comedy is good, let alone great. Her performance was flawless. Her character was a single mom in dilemma, but still bring laugh to anyone. And she toe to toe with the great Jack Nicholson. Love that movie
Agreed. Yea, the character is strident but that’s the point. Helen gave a performance of equal comedic and dramatic weight. It’s one of the most unique performances I’ve ever seen and she acted it beautifully. It was also a huge deal because at the time she was just known as a sitcom actress because she was still starring in Mad About You.
@@hawrnball yeah, exactly. There were then some chit chat about how the actress from TV stole the top prize for movie awards. Helen proof then to not be underrated by get another Oscar nomination.
Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook was seriously underwhelming. It was just a boring rom com, but because it was about mental health, her performance was blown into something that it wasnt.

Her perfomance in 'The Hours" is a masterpiece but she was not the lead actress in the movie. However, I do agree with you.
Totally agree.
I agree. The movie overall was a thing of beauty especially in addressing the elusiveness of depression. She was mesmerizing not to mention the gorgeous score by Philip Glass.
She was fine, but one of three leads. There’s no way to justify she was best actress.
Cate Blanchett was robbed by Gwyenth Paltrow
Yup!!! Still bugs me till this day!!
Maybe because of Harvey Weinstein?
Or Fernanda Montenegro in "Central Station"
Yes, yes, yes and yes.
The only reason Platrow won was because of Harvey Weinstein. He had the Oscars in his pocket
Emma Stone for Lala Land. She was definitely great but nothing compared to other nominees.
Mary Grace Tsai Ya she was.. she was atleast the third best (haven't seen Jackie or Elle yet)
*BLA BLA BLAND
My thoughts exactly. Everyone is praising the movie and I went to see it. I must say, I was seriously underwhelmed. I don't get the hype. The story is pretty basic. Acting not at par.
In my opinion she did win because of birdman. Like what happened to colin firth
Emma Stone isn't even a good actress.
Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook)
I was extremely underwhelmed with Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side
True, true
I'm underwhelmed with Sandra Bullock in everything.
Her performance in Gravity was much better.
Actively Insane too bad that was the best part of the movie... and is panting for 2 hours really a performance?
Freedfg She wasn't just panting. There were many other lines of dialogue. You clearly weren't paying attention to the movie. The movie has many other good parts to it. The emotional resonance drew me in a lot.
Whoopi shoud've gotten an Oscar for The Color Purple.
Agreed! She was brilliant!
Agree So Much
What's Wrong With The Academy
Fact.
Hell yes👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾
Absolute facts. The Color Purple was nominated for 11 oscars and took home ZERO.
How did Glenn Close not win for Fatal Attraction? Her performance was excellent and it's one of the best thrillers ever.
She was f-ing amazing!!! Kill the rabbit.
@Romina Yes, but it's about underwhelming wins AS COMPARED to their competition, thus the superior performances are relevant.
GC is great in every role she's in. She's getting much buzz for "The Wife." Maybe this is her year, finally.
Coz it was already done in play misty for me
Back then I had JUST broken up with a clone of the stalker type Glenn Close portrayed so brilliantly.
Are you freaking kidding me with Nicole Kidman? She was amazing in "The Hours"
Juan Bertini I agree with you!
I think Natalie Portman in Jackie was more deserving than Emma Stone in La La Land.
Agreed lala land was crap.
nichole g no it was not,you just hate it because it made you look edgy
But is it worthy as her second win?
@@sebastianlifoon lol i like emma stone and ryan gosling usually but couldnt sit through this one the singing annoyed me oh well
She was definitely robbed.
I love Julia Roberts. But Ellen Burstyn's performance in Requiem For A Dream is one of the greatest performances of all time, in my opinion.
Julia Roberts mouth can fit two maybe three you know what easily. She took the deal as well. She can't really act. Pretty Woman was silly. What prostitute has perfect straight teeth? My girlfriend doesn't even have her own dental plan. This is media and celebrity hype yo.
Jennfier Lawrence, that's right I said it.
The fact that Shakespeare in Love beat out Saving Private Ryan for best picture is a joke
Culraven so disrespectful
Culraven are you serious, I never thought it was Tom Hanks at the beginning, and movies lie to their audiences all the time, take the La La Land ending for examples
Lock Stock and There's Something About Mary are much better, but critics and awards ceremonies hate comedy.
I didn't mind Shakespeare a light well written comedy oh gwentyh did nothing to deserve it sorry judi delivered v witty dialogue 😣
I CAN'T GET OVER ELLEN BURSTYN IN REQUIEM... I CAN'T.
Marissa Tomei in my opinion DESERVED that Oscar!! I liked the fact that she won for a comedy movie instead of a drama or musical like they always put in those categories.
No way Paltrow should have won. It should have been either Streep or Blanchett, that year.
Definitely Blanchett! I was shocked when she didn't win that year.
Fernanda Montenegro was the best
lol please. Just because these women weren't having nervous breakdowns on-screen it doesn't mean didn't "deserve" their awards.
+Eric Toribio exactly.
How is J-Law for Silver Linings not on in this list? She was okay/good in it but not Best Actress worthy, plus Chastain in 0Dark30 was much better that year
Amen!!!
Emanuelle Riva from Amour was more diseerving too. Hell even the 6 year old girl from Beasts of the Southern Wild acted better than J-Lawrence.
Mo V ids Technically she was 9 when she got the Oscar nomination.
Not to mention Naomi Watts in The Impossible...
Chastain didn't do anything spectacular in that movie.
Give Amy Adams, Emily Blunt and Glen Close an Oscar Award!
Emily Blunt.... no.
But Angela B gets one next month for an Honorary
Gwyneth Paltrow winning over Cate Blanchett was a joke... anyway, Cate got 2 after that so I guess it's ok..?
+MissMel9110 Watchmojo should make a top 10 Cate Blanchett performances. She can turn any mediocre movie script into a beautiful pearl.
+gast128 yes she does. She's quite extraordinary. :)
And yes, they should make a Top 10 about her!
+MissMel9110 Well Cate deserves to have three oscars then, cuz for Elizabeth the oscar was hers!
+MissMel9110 I personally believe that if Harvey Winstein (one of the producers for Shakespeare in Love) didn't bully the oscar voters, Blanchett would have won.
+MissMel9110 i love you for saying this
nicole kidman for The Hours? in dishonourable mention? i think she deserve the Oscar for that role...
Maybe you're right but the same year wre nominate Salma Hayek in Frida, Julianne Moore in Far from heaven, Diane Lane in Unfatithful and Renee Zellweger in Chicago. It was a very difficult year for women.
+Amparo Narbona Julianne Moore was also in The Hours the same year.
Amparo Narbona and of the five, they picked the worse one, Kidman.
I think we all now know the real reason Gwynnie won-her close and personal relationship with the hideous abomination of a human being that is Harvey Weinstein.
it was because Weinstein
@Gertrude Smith YAAAAASSSS!!!!
You know something is wrong with the world when Gwyneth Paltrow steals an oscar from Cate Blanchett
you put Nichole Kidman and not Jennifer Lawrence or Sandra Bullock???XD are you serius?
Cher in Moonstruck is nowhere near as good as Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone. You cannot change my mind.
I still don’t understand why Jennifer won
@@tymaa9349 cause her acting was good
Vishwa Ravi her role was basic and any (not great) good actress would’ve pulled it off

Don't forget the Harvey Weinstein factor here.
Nicole Kidman as Virginia Wolf is one of her strongest performance!! She does not deserve to be in this list
Marvin Omar Menjivar Alvarez To Die For is the only thing Kidman deserves an Oscar for. She was the worse of the three female leads in The Hours.
James Harris . To die for is the only thing she deserves an Oscar? Lol. Delusional much? What about Moulin Rouge, Rabbit Hole, Dogville, The Paperboy and Birth.
Actually she does, Julianne Moore in Far From Heaven was the top Acting Role That Year...
I love her in The Paperboy

SANDRA BULLOCK - THE BLIND SIDE. That year the Oscar was for Meryl Streep in Julia and Julia, or for Gabourey Sidibe for Precious!
THATS WHAT I SAID!!!! Not to mention the day before, she won a Razzie!!
+Federico Andrés Gil De La Rosa I have never understood the hype about Sandra Bullock. In my opinion, moderately talented at most.
I also think her acting in that movie was overrated .
agree so much and I actually love her but that performance had nothing Oscar worthy in it...plus the overdue factor shouldn't have played into the decision at all since she hasn't given an award worthy performance up to then anyways!
Agreed!
Oh yes-I almost forgot they had Whoopi on there
Yeah, and Moonstruck has really stood the test of time; a wonderful movie and a great performance by Cher.
Nicole Kidman is amazing in The Hours. Jennifer Lawrence should be on the list.
They seem to love JLaw on this channel for some reason...
Whoopi Goldberg deserved to win in 1985 for "The Color Purple".
Even so, her win for "Ghost" was well-deserved!
Without her the movie wouldn’t have succeeded.
She was perfect...
The role in "Ghost" relied on a black actor playing the clown for the audience.
@@Saintinthecity-wh9nl That's not true...the part was not even written with a black actress in mind for the part.
Truly, Goldberg deserved to win for her debut in "The Color Purple" even more.
@@Saintinthecity-wh9nl Not a fan of Goldberg the person, but she was great in that movie; for me she made that movie.
I don't see Jennifer Lawrence here, I'm leaving disappointed.
WM loves her.
I find myself randomly getting upset about Sandra Bullock winning for the blindside, over Gabourey Sidibe and Meryl Streep. ugh.
And Carey Mulligan
yeah i preferred carey or gabourey
gabourey??? are u crazy? she cant act. I like her a lot but no.
Carey Mulligan was robbed.
Jhon1234567 have you ever seen her in an interview? she's NOTHING like precious. She truly inhabited that character
As much as I enjoy Sandra Bullock, her win for "The Blind Side" over Meryl Streep's captivating and luscious performance as Julia Child was as unsatisfying as it was bewildering.
DD Burrows Gabourey Sibide was more deserving that year than Sandra Bullock.
Carey Mulligan for An Education deserved
It was a white savior movie. The academy probably thought they cured racism by giving it to Sandra Bullock that year.
@TheDestroyer2alltrolls it really was boring I agree
Nicole Kidman was fantastic in The Hours!!!
Agreed. That was deserved.
Dominika Paksicza you are so right. She killed that performance.

Totally.
Kidman owned that Oscar. Flawless.
Renee Zellweger DESERVED that oscar! She wasnt a one note. She was firey, passionate, vulnerable, and full of heart.
Thank you! Totally agreed
So am I the only one who thought Jessica Chastain should've won over Jennifer Lawrence?
Nope, I agree. She didn't even deserve a nomination this year for that crappy film Joy.
+BladeBlurX I still remembered Jessica Chastain's performance in zero dark thirty years later
Yes
Nope. Everyone does except the Oscar voters.
At this point, it is almost common sense she should have lost. Jessica and Emmanuelle Riva were better.
Maurissa tomei was a revelation and she still is a national treasure- how dare you besmirch her star turn like this. May god have mercy on your souls.
Marissa Tomeis was amazing in my cousin Vinny!
Yea, that was the only one I really didn't agree with. The moment they said it I was totally caught off guard. I thought she had a terrific performance and her and Pesci's scenes made that movie.
She was great but not the best when compared to the other nominees.
The only memorable scenes in that movie are ones that she's in, which should say a lot about how deserved her win was
Miranda Richardson should have won for Damages or Vanessa Redgrave in Howard's End
@@NYChica23 Absolutely true!
I personally think that Nicole Kidman shouldn't be "honoured" with a dishonorable mention; her performance in 'The Hours' was breathtaking and stunning!
Marisa Tomei was really great in my cousin vinny. A lot of actors find comedy harder than drama. Comedic actors are underrated
Hell yes! Judy Garland was robbed blind!!
lousy list. i agree with most of the picks, but they just did not consider anything before the 60s, i mean, how can you make this list without including grace kelly (against judy garland) and judy holliday (against gloria swanson and bette davis in some of the most iconic female performances of all time).
@@luccaderby

I have tried to watch that movie a few times. I just didn’t see it. However, knowing that Harvey knows how to Oscar Bait answers a lot of questions. Nah forest gump is more overated
Yes! Never understood that one.
She is good in that role but listen Oscars love true story films that's why
Yeah, the girl should have won for "Precious". It was an inexplicable decision.
I would have rather seen her win for Gravity or Crash. The Blind Side was awful
Sandra Bullock was a million times better in Gravity
...just wondering; how many of them were Weinstein's Miramax studios promoted actresses?...can anyone do the math? 😏
Gwyneth definitely
@Tommy80 Awww, I loved CZJ in Chicago. I thought she deserved it. Agree with the others, though.

No, Whoopi should have won for Colour Purple, no doubt at all, but for Ghost? Nope.
David Cortes Her performance in Ghost was iconic? *dies laughing*
@ "Molly, you in danger girl" That line alone got her the Oscar.
People tend to judge comedies for not being good art. But honestly, well pulled off comedy is pretty much just as hard as dramatic performaces. People don't like whoopi goldberg's win for ghost cause she was playing a comedic character.
I remember being upset over the Paltrow win. I was like wtf?! anybody couldve delivered the acting that she did...

Jennifer Lawrence winner over anyone else that was nominated.... especially over Naomi Watt for "the impossible" -__-
Zarahemla Dela Cruz Naomi Watts' acting on The Impossible make me fright and even make me cry. She's totally amazing. I hope Watts gonna win one in near future
Teddy Liong she'll definitely.
Zarahemla Dela Cruz exactly her performance was a typical rom com role not even a gr8 women centric role which is the symbol of Best Actress at Oscars I really don't know who much bribe would have been given for her win

The #1 most underwhelming Best Actress Oscar Wins from was by Judy Holliday "Born Yesterday", when Bette Davis "All About Eve" or Gloria Swanson "Sunset Boulevard" should have won.
I couldn't agree more!!!!
Love Jennifer Lawrence, but she didn't deserve to win...

Julia Roberts always plays the same kind of character (romantic comedies and soft dramas).
Exactly. One dimensional and overrated.
Yess thats because julia is a film star not an actress like meryl or something like that
Check her out in Ben Is Back. Different role for her and outstanding in my opinion.
The point about Julia Roberts’ usual vehicles is well made, but that was what made Erin Brockovich special, some humour but generally against type.
Whoopi Goldberg is the absolute best part of Ghost. I quote her lines from that movie constantly. Don't talk shit about Whoopi!
She deserved the Oscar for "The Color Purple", not Ghost.
@@angelmora3660 I have to disagree. Geraldine Page won that Oscar against Whoopi Goldberg and Geraldine Page deserved that Oscar. The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Oscars and won 0 - which is shameful on the Academy - but Geraldine Page owned that category that year for me.

gadget00 Maximilian Schell in JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG was the wiser choice for my money.I preferred Mr.
Sadly, she passed away the year after (1987).
eyyodc I agree that award was a consolation prize for not winning for The Color Purple
It's an outrage that the sublime Glenn Close is STILL Oscarless!
I didn't see anything remarkable about Jennifer Lawrence's in Silverlinings Playbook. or was it because all other actresses were so bad that year?
Naomi Watts was good but all the other actresses were just average so JLaw 's win is not a big surprise !!!
She and all cast got a nomination for best /suporting actor because the movie was great. Maybe it didn't like you
holiday07 Finally someone who agrees with me. I cant stand Jennifer Lawrence.
Excuse me ? Jessica Chastain's Zero Dark Thirty perf was awesome .
Mehdi Foudala that is a opinion. For me she is not
There's alot of contraversy over how Shakespeare in love won so many Oscars.
And there definitely should have been...I thought it was crap.
I think it's wrong to mention Nicole Kidman at the end... I don't really like her, but the performance in "The Hours" was extremely good
Ellen Burstyn is on my top three best performances of all time!
Sigourney Weaver doesn't have this fucking Oscar. There's NO justice in this world!!!
Am I the only one who thought Rene Zellweger was amazing in Cold Mountain?! I didn't mind that she won.
I agree with you- she was great in Cold Mountain
I know, right?? I mean To be honest, I havent seen other roles that were nominated that year, but to say that Ruby is One dimensional?? Like wtf??
She was amazing.
She deserved to win
Jillybean she was brilliant👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I was very surprised that Witherspoon won, but Pheonix didn't.
Madame K His JC was spot on ... Like to the point where I had to buy the soundtrack for the movie bc it was THAT good
Because PSH was better.
@@uncreativelynamedchannel5887 Totally
I totally agreed, I surprised too
Nicole was amazing in the hours and she defiantly deserve it
Defiantly? Perhaps you mean definitely..
Nicole Kidman deserved her's for The Hours.
Sandra Bullock should have been on there for The Blind side.
Brian Doyle totally agreed
Absolutely correct..Carrey Mulligan's incredible performance in An Education or Gabourey Sidibe's layered performance in Precious deserved the Oscar...
I agree. I don’t even think she should have been nominated. Wasn’t her best performance and it wasn’t believable
@@rambunctiousrohan It was "politically correct" decision.
Yes Carey Mulligan should have won
Shakespear in love was one of the worst films yet was heavily loaded with Oscars and it brutally stole the award of Best picture from Saving Private Ryan. Shame! Apart from your list, I think Whoopie was deserving, her Performance in Ghost was commendable.
'Brutally stole'? Give me a break! No one stole anything from anyone. It just didn't win enough votes. For the record, Saving Private Ryan had an extraordinary opening scene but the rest of it was an anti-climax. I know I'm not the only one who thinks this, too.
Because the awards ceremony love boring, historical crap.
Weinstein at his best - selling his films and stars!! Everybody knew of his atrocious behavior but nobody said anything cause, well, they' are a selfish lot.
If you honestly think Shakespeare in Love is one of the worst films of all time, then you need to watch more movies.
Gojira, King of the Monsters I agree totally, Ryan wasn’t even the best War Movie that year! That would be The Thin Red Line.
Literally every single Jennifer Lawerence performance
I'm just glad she didn't win for American Hustle. I found that performance in particular to be completely average.
Don't get me wrong but its obviously that nearly young actresses wins over the older ones.
Emma Stone should be added to this list. She wasn't bad in Lalaland, but she wasn't that great. The other performances had much more depth to them.
This top was made in 2015.
Fernanda Montenegro, who was also competing against Gwyneth Paltrow, was much more deserving of the award.
Guilherme Eddino Agreed! She even came right out and said that Paltrow didn't deserve to win.
5. Gwyneth Paltrow
4. Meryl Streep
3. Emily Watson
2. Fernanda Montenegro
1. Cate Blanchett
Fernanda Montenegro is amazing, even in soap operas
Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook was seriously underwhelming. It was just a boring rom com, but because it was about mental health, her performance was blown into something that it wasnt.
The mothers performance in Requiem for A Dream is one of the most powerful and terrifying performance i have ever seen
