Ever wondered where the mysterious Tooth Fairy came from? (Where does she get all that money?!) Do you often think about Disney, and mice? Do you ever ponder teeth, and just how weird and creepy they are? Do you ever stay awake into the wee hours of the night, bemoaning dental mishaps and (worse still) evil expensive dental bills? Well, GREAT NEWS! This video is made just for you! I've been trying to avoid thinking about my latest dental trauma by... researching teeth. And fairies. And Disney! So, I've tied all these wonderful things together in a little animated dip into some tooth lore. It's sometimes creepy, sometimes micey and dicey, but always (I hope!) interesting. Join me as I explore the origins of the Tooth Fairy as we know it today, just how Disney is involved, and what the value of a tooth is in modern times.

When I was little, I, like many, believed in the tooth fairy. One day by the time I learned to write I wrote a letter and put it with my tooth under my pillow.
I asked the fairy what she looked like and where she lived.
My dad, back when he meant something to me, drew a picture of a little fairy and wrote that she didn’t have pictures but she tried to draw herself.
It looked kinda like tinkerbell, but with her hair down and a flow-y dress as well as a little pouch.
Fast forward about a decade and my little sister lost a tooth and my parents forgot to switch it for money two nights in a row, so I went through my stash and found some coins, stitched up a tiny bag that barely fit them and switched it for the tooth, along with a note saying: “sorry I was late!”
So in my family it’s always been this beautiful tiny lady with a little bag :)

When I was little in my family it was always refered as "El Ratón de los Dientes", and it wasn't until I started high school and actually talked to English-native speakers that the concept of "The Tooth Fairy" popped up. I was soo confused over why they had a strange fairy instead of a nice, tiny mouse with a cute little cap and satchel lol. Then, of course, came the Dreamworks movie "Rise of the Guardians" and now I can't think of the "Tooth Fairy" without an image of that movie popping up in my mind lol.

When I was younger (and now, because I have younger siblings) you leave your tooth in a glass of water in the kitchen. The tooth fairy is a bit like santa and would only come if you went to bed on time and were good.
If the tooth fairy didn't come for a few days it was because 'you were naughty yesterday' or 'you were up too late'
I stay up late all the time, so now I just tell my siblings that since I don't loose teeth anymore the tooth fairy doesn't care if I see her so long as I mind my own business

Tooth fairy: ''I add them to *my collection* ''
She opens her mouth showing thousands and thousands of teeth embedded in her jaws
I never had much of the ideology of the tooth fairy, but as you mentioned, when I used to think about it she would be a lot similar to tinkerbell, a little, funny, a bit clumsy but witty fairy, exchanging fallen teeth for one or two euros (I am from italy lol); but for me this figure didn't last long sadly, I found it back with the tv show ''the fairly odd parents'' later on when i was alas too old to believe about her or to have any spare milk tooth

When I was little I thought the tooth fairy was this beautiful young women with long black hair, brown eyes and tanned skin (Basically I though she looked like someone from my culture). When I lost a tooth I was excited and I couldn't wait to see her. I remember occasionally putting letters under my pillow with my tooth and I wanted to see her so badly. My father (who is a dentist) told use that she preferred healthy teeth because it shows her that we are taking care of ourselves. I lost all my baby teeth at the age of 10 (still don't know if that is a bad thing or not but my dad didn't freak out about it so i guess that's ok) and I was very sad cause I knew she would never come see me again. But I shared a room with my younger siblings so I had that to look forward to. She (or my parents) would give us a dollar per tooth and I was so happy cause (to me) this was proof that she existed. I remember waking up super early one morning (like 4 or 5 in the morning) and saw that she had already visited me. I was so happy that I ran to my dad (he was getting ready to go to work) and proudly showed off my dollar while jumping up and down saying "look daddy she came to see me!!". It wasn't until I was 12 when I found out she did not existed in probably the worst way possible. One day I was looking for some toothpaste in my parents bathroom when I came across a container that holds retainers. I never saw one before and I was curious what was inside. lo and behold it there were baby teeth inside. To this day I don't know if it was my teeth or my sisters teeth or all of ours but it was very creepy to see as a 12 year old. Apparently my dad kept them to remind him of our childhoods and I think he still has them to this day. My mom thought it was weird he did that but she and I can understand why he did this. If i become a mom i might keep the first and last baby teeth of my kids (is that weird?). Overall the tooth fairy was a positive thing from my childhood that I look back with happy memories. My two questions I have for parents is 1: How the hell did y'all get the tooth from under the pillow? Like that's some ninja shit right there. 2: I never asked this question as a kid but how would/did you explain to your kid what she did with them. I just assumed she collected them to study them.

My mom was the tooth fairy in our house. I had to get my baby canine tooth extracted because the adult was actually trying to grow over top of it. The baby tooth broke into 3 pieces during the extraction. The dentist actually backed me up when I said that meant the tooth fairy owed me 3x the amount, one payment for each piece of tooth 😁😎🤑

I never believed in the tooth fairy, when I was younger what I did was throw my baby teeth on the roof and recite a short poem which basically said “mouse mouse take my old tooth and give me one of your new teeth.” (Sorry for the awful translation)
To make sure the rest of the story makes sense I was raised by my grandparents in a different country while my younger siblings were in England with my parents. When I was 6 I moved to England with my parents and I still threw my teeth on the roof and recited the poem, but when one of my siblings teeth fell out my parents told her about the tooth fairy and to leave the tooth under her pillow so she can get a pound. I was amazed that a fairy like that existed so next time my tooth fell out I put it under my pillow. I didn’t tell my parents that this time I would leave my tooth for the tooth fairy so the next day when I looked under my pillow and saw no money, I thought the tooth fairy was mad at me for giving my teeth to the mouse instead of her.
For a while I thought the tooth fairy was a petty brat before I stopped believing in her completely 😂

I'm from Russia, and when I was little and lost teeth I hid them inder a pillow, the 'tooth fairy' aka my parents would change it for some little toy/accessory (like bracelet or ring) or sweets. I was rather old when I found out that in other countries tooth fairies exchange teeth for coins. I think it's really weird because kids can't do anything with money at that age
About the image of the fairy, I never knew what she looked like or was told, but me and my friends imagined her as a little lady with wings and a bag, we also thought she had powers to teleport under the pillows haha

When I was little I lived in an island in the Caribbean and remembered watching this movie called “El Ratonzito Perez” in which it is translated as the little mouse Perez; this little muse is a male. It took me by surprise and I started to asked my parents a bunch of questions about him. They said that at night he finds different ways to enter the house to get my tooth and give me money but he will always leave me a letter with the money inside. A lot of the time I would receive from $5-10 for the tooth that I leave for him. But by accident one night when I was around 9 or 10 I couldn’t sleep well and was pretty much awake. I began to hear one of my parents have woken and is leaving their room, out of panic pretended to be sleeping ‘cause I was supposed to be asleep. At the time I sleeping with my little brother to keep him company for the night so there was only me and my brother in one room and my parents in another. I heard the door open then someone lifted my head with the pillow and then carefully put it back down. I waited till I was sure that whoever it was left my room and went back to my parents bedroom. As soon as the door close I waited for 10 seconds and then lifted my pillow I noticed it was a note & that my tooth wasn’t there anymore. I opened it and noticed that there was money inside but I chose to the letter instead. The little mouse Perez always left his name on the end of the letter and I was shocked that the whole time it was my parents but I decided to be reasonable & believed that my parents were just helping him out for the night. But later on when I was 13 they let me know the truth and I was happy it was them the whole time because I felt that when I grow up I will continue this tradition when I decide to have children of my own.

My grandma bought this relatively big, clear, jar and decorated the inside to look like a little forest. Then she put a cut out of a picture of a fairy and glued it on the inside on the jar. When she gave it to me she said, “I caught the toothfairy!” And I believed her. Then she told me. “Everytime you loose your baby teeth, open the jar before you go to bed so she can give you your money.” I believed this for years until one day when I lost my tooth I woke up to my dad shining a flashlight in my face.

My tooth fairy was a bat!
Okay, some context. I live in the southwestern USA, where there lives a species of long nosed bats. I had a few living in the shed of my childhood home (my dad built them a proper bat house a few years later, but when I was small they were in the shed). One time, after I’d lost a tooth and put it under my pillow, I left the window open for the tooth fairy, and a poor confused bat flew in, probably looking for bat-snacks. I woke up to the sound of it flying around my room. I was a little scared, after all bats were associated with scary things like vampires, so I opened the rest of my windows and tried to as quietly as possible get it out. It eventually left, and I suddenly remembered WHY my window was open in the first place. I checked under my pillow and my tooth was gone! I came to the very obvious conclusion that the bat was the tooth fairy. I was no longer afraid of bats as a bonus. I never had another bat break-in, but that didn’t matter, I had seen the bat fairy once, and that was enough for me.

I remember reading a children's book called, "The Real Tooth Fairy" and looking back it was pretty cool.
If I recall recall right, the main child saw the tooth fairy and they looked their mom.
The kid was surprised and thought their mom was the tooth fairy. I think later The tooth fairy explained that they change their form to become a person that makes the child comfortable so that way they don't accidentally scare the child if they wake up and see a stranger in their room. I remember it had lovely illustrations too. Probably one of my favorite tooth fairy related stories.

  • @tenshikaren
    @tenshikaren Год назад

My mom made me a pillow with a little pocket that could just barely fit 4 quarters in and had a nicely stitched letter to the tooth fairy all on the front. I remember this lovely, lace-edged, pillow trading 4 quarters for my tooth for the first half of my teeth, a $2 bill for the second half, and a $5 bill for the last tooth. Mostly my brother got the same, reusing the same pillow 5 years later.
My mom was very thoughtful about holidays for us. For Easter, she never bought pre-made baskets but had us decorate a sturdy one with fun flowers and ribbons every year and got a decent mix of candy (never the super expensive stuff, but tasty and well thought out). Her treats choice was similar for Christmas, but there would be about $25 in little toys that helped keep easily distractible kids focused or little puzzle games along with a bit of decent candies. Her 'Santa gifts' were always wrapped in the same nice gift wrap for every gift, every year; she bought a huge roll of the good stuff for cheap in bulk and dubbed it the 'Santa paper' of which there was still over a dozen yards remaining when we were grown. She would even leave a bit of cookie and milk as proof Santa came and snacked!
I would never describe what I got as 'fancy' and it was never expensive... my family was definitely lower middle living the typical life of debt, a bit above our means... but we had these few nice things because we were very careful to take care of our things and not live a 'disposable lifestyle'. She was a craft mom, so everything felt custom and expensive on a budget. She taught us to treasure our toys so we would have them forever. I still have so many of my old toys boxed away that friends comment of as looking still mint condition even though I know we played a ton with them. I know this was because my mom took a whole lot of extra care and attention in our education.
I don't think I ever believed in a tooth fairy or any of that though, so I kinda feel like all the effort was wasted on me; as much as I appreciated it, it's not like I could turn and thank her when she was trying her best to pretend it was real and I always worried if I didn't act excited enough about the stuff she would have been heartbroken (not that it's hard to be excited on Christmas as a kid lol, just a lot of pressure when you know the truth). Closest I ever felt to believing in any of the holiday myths was crying when I thought a bunny must have actually been in the house when I was 4 and stole my basket... my mom hid the basket too well (I was very good at finding it, she had gotten clever). To be clear, I wasn't ever all that into candy as I prefer salty snacks (she even realized this little thing in later years and started changing my goodies, such a good mom!), but I was upset my decorated basket was stolen and thought the bunny was awful, lol.
I always used to wonder why parents thought it was normal to teach kids about 'stranger danger' and never taking candy or gifts from an unknown adult, then seem fine with strange, powerful, magical, and intelligent creatures breaking into their house to leave gifts for their kids. I don't mind the traditions, but somehow I feel like we should evaluate how we choose to portray the holidays to our kids. In a lot of ways I'm thankful that I knew the truth but also knew better than to spoil the game for my mom.

I have to say I am in love with your channel. Found it about a week ago about already watched every video. It just wonderful. I feel it a perfect balance. Be it the stories, your art style, or your voice. All three feels like this balance of death/dread/decay and cuteness. There just something completely amazing about your art that feels like it is injecting life into something that been long dead. Maybe im weird but I just love it and the whole idea of something both being creepy and cute at the same time. Stories are told wonderfully that easily draws me in which again emphasis both the macabre of a story and also the cute and hopeful side (despite how small).
Although what I find most interesting that seem to wrap everything up so nicely is your voice. Definitely very pretty so got the whole cute thing down but it also has a wispy quality to it, like it being sent by the wind and not a human vassel. I was really curious if that was your normal voice or if it a performance ?
Most likely this comment will get buried and not see the light of day but hopefully you see it, also tried sending a tweet but it often can be difficult to talk with youtubers, just wanted to say you got a new fan and I look forward to seeing the new things you release.

And collect the money in my piggy bank as a kinda allowance(never had one. Still don't! Lol!) I soon started getting suspicious and as the years went by, I discovered, and was elaborated on the true fact that, my Dad kept all my baby teeth in his wallet!; as pristine as when they came out. All the way 'til my baby teeth started to dwindle n dwindle.

My tooth-fairy gave me 5 dollars for my first tooth, since the first one is so special. I still remember putting it under my pillow, only to head to sleep in my parents room. In the morning, my little sister went and got the money for me (trying to help, bless) and I was inconsolable. On another note, I’ve had MANY dental-woes of my own, particularly in childhood. As a rule, the tooth fairy paid extra for teeth that had to be pulled by the dentist, which eased the pain a little 😊

When I was little my family visited some relatives and when I brushed my teeth one of them fell off and went down the drain. I was hysterical because I thought the tooth fairy would be mad at me so my dad or my relative fished it up when I went to bed and the next morning was $20 under my pillow with a note that basically said the tooth increased in value due to my family's labor to get it back.

As for my adult teeth, I’m supposed to have one taken out due to a cavity but since I feel no pain and the dentist can sand the effected area down I’ve been completely fine and dental surgery free.

I have 2 brothers, 1 older and 1 younger, we're real close in age difference(the biggest between me and the youngest, which is like 2 years). How Tooth Fairy visits went, for us, were to put the tooth under your pillow and you'd wake up to find the tooth replaced with $1. It was a very exciting thing to us(almost like a right of passage now that I think about it lol, one child was sure to follow the other within a year or so).
I remember losing a baby tooth in elementary school, going to the nurse, and getting one of those neon pink, tooth-shaped, plastic holders(as shown in the video). I was excited to show it to any other kid who would point out the container, I held it in my hands and put it on my desk instead of putting it in my pocket. (Hopefully this shows you how excited we would get.) That's how the whole day went until I got home, and then proceeded to mention it 50 billion times to my parents and brothers lol(my brothers would do the same btw).
Now every time my mother, my older bother, or I have teeth taken out, my younger brother eventually mentions the Tooth Fairy, him thinking that she's the one who took care of business(None of us want to burst his bubble, plus we honestly don't mind). When that happens, it reminds me of those fond memories and simple times.

I always tucked my teeth under my pillow as soon as they fell out (until later years of course) and was eager to imagine a fairy visiting me. I was always disappointed that I couldn't ever meet her and ask her about herself and her job, but with the ever-present warning of "catching a holiday figure can ruin their magic", I was always sure to be asleep. I imagined her kinda like a fusiin between Tinkerbell and Merryweather, being younger but still carrying that maternal presence.

Yo when I was younger, I got $20 per tooth from the ‘tooth fairy’ since I had such a low pain tolerance and I hated loosing teeth because of it. Then I realized that the tooth fairy wasn’t actually a thing and that my parents were the ones giving me money but I kept pretending to believe in it to continue to get money. Still the best act I’ve ever managed to keep up.

When I was little (1980’s) we were poor so I got a dollar or two but one time it was near Christmas and I lost a tooth and I got a Barbie under my pillow that was the best one and now with my son I usually leave him a couple of dollars under his pillow and one time I left him a set of markers and a sketchbook! I think it also helps make kids less afraid of losing their teeth I know my son is high functioning autistic and it kind of freaked him out to loose his teeth but when I told him that the TOOTH FAIRY 🧚‍♀️ was going to come and leave him a present he got excited about it and didn’t really think about the mechanics of it as much.
Very informative and amazing animations as per usual! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🧚‍♀️

When I was 1-4 I had seen the tooth fairy as a tiny little lady with long brown hair but was kept in a messy bun, wearing a sky blue glow-ish but sparkle-ish dress with big blue butterfly wings. When I was 6 or 7 a woman came to my school and put on a show or us, where she would show us her fairies that were kept in a glass jar, and they lit up like little fireflies. Ever since then up until I was told the tooth fairy doesn't exist I've always thought that ALL fairies looked (and acted) the same.
Glowing so bright, like a spiritual orb, as quiet as a mouse. Acting shy but elegant.
To sum it up I've always seen fairies as angelic, elegant-like. As beautiful as butterflies. :)

The tooth fairy I think of is a small creature with what look like shimmering butterfly wings and a face that only a mother could love, one so twisted and creepy with long sharp teeth like a rats with yellow piercing eyes that lightly glow in the dark (we had cats). In addition to its long yellow teeth and yellow eyes the tooth fair had long sharp claws that it used to steal the tooth from beneath your pillows, often leaving marks behind, and they almost never left something behind.

My mom was a very crafty sort who made a little embroidered pillow with a pocket for the lost tooth, one for me and one for my younger brother. We both had our own individual tooth fairies, mine was a woman named Sylvia and my brother’s was a man named Hermie (after the elf in the Rankenbass Rudolf stop motion short). They would both leave us a dollar for our teeth (more if we either had to get a dentist involved or if it was particularly painful) and a note saying that they built houses with our teeth and how they especially liked how ours were so shiny and healthy looking. I remember I sarcastically said “The ‘tooth fairy’ owes me about a hundred dollars for this.” When I got my wisdom teeth out. And I got the money afterward.

My tooth fairy left a big surprise. (my mom) would actually make a trail in and out of our bedrooms with glitter and we would usually have a gift waiting on the kitchen counter and money under our pillow. She was a single mom with two of us. She would also say Cupid visited every Valentine's day. She would make a trail of glitter and little heart confetti and we would have a gift waiting for us on the counter. Our school got upset and told her to stop doing that with us because other kids didn't get visits from Cupid and were upset. She was basically like, "Uh...F you?" Thinking back on this and the fact she was a single mom with me and my little brother really brings a sweet tear to my eye knowing she did that for us. She made me an Easter basket this year and I'm 26. Ha old habits die hard. Love you Mom!
