I heard Tank Bank hates the summer job jokes.
When using the phrase "don't let anyone tell you otherwise" it supposed to be in addition to a critic statement. Like saying "The summer job jokes are enjoyable, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.", that's a statement.
When saying "I enjoyed the summer jobs joke" that's an opinion and adding "don't let anyone tell you otherwise" is saying you have this opinion, but don't listen to anyone that says you actually have a different opinion not that the summer job jokes are a intrinsically enjoyable.
When people read the initial post they read it as the OP saying the summer jobs jokes are enjoyable and to not let anyone say they aren't. Which reveals people don't actually follow along everything that's said and will automatically drop things to cause the conversation to make sense. So if you're worried about conversations don't worry about elaborating because people won't follow along with what you exactly say.

I know the feeling, I've had some shitty jobs and bosses in the past. I once worked in a cafe/kitchen where every single thing I ever did was a) too slow or b) wrong in the first place, and the lady I was working under wouldn't let me wear gloves, so my hands got butchered by my eczema breakouts as I was constantly washing them. I remember several times where I wanted to push her face against the hot griddle. It was probably the angriest/most beat down I've ever been in my life. I lasted three weeks. I'm glad I'm never going back.

Nice aggretsuko reference. When I worked at a certain grocery store that shall not be named, they never let me work inside. It was always, go outside in the 95-degree weather and push the carts, clean the bathrooms, carry the heavy things for the customers, take care of the garbage. I would literally spend 8 hours running back and forth between things because they couldn't pay anyone else to do that stuff. If I did the bathrooms they would say "The carts are running out!" If I pushed carts they would go "The bathrooms are dirty!" For like the 30 minutes that my sift overlapped with the only other cart pusher we really had to hustle to get the carts all back inside or he would never catch up and he would be there till 1:00 am.

Sorry for the near year late reply, but I remember some freaking people like my own coworkers, supervisors or old bosses saying everyone should work at retail for like at least 6 months, a year, or however long to see what it's like and how hard it is...
I wouldn't wish this on anyone... not someone like you anyway Frankie. :p
I get some customers might be irritable and cranky and should be more understanding by doing this kind of thing themselves, but idk...
I don't think retail should be a necessity though, that's just ridiculous. :p

  • @David-Stanley

Great animation! The art and music just gives off the best creepy vibes :)
I used to work at Michaels many years ago. On one hand I loved it because I was surrounded by ART STUFF. And I also learned how to think on my feet and be able to chat with tons of new people every day (I was shy). There are a few funny stories from that job, one of my favorites being this older lady who comes into my bubble to ask me something. I turn to face her with a smile and as she opens her mouth for the first syllable, she pretty much just burps in my face. She apologized nervously and asked her question. I'll never forget that day. Burps gross me out anyway.
That job wasn't terrible but there was a toxic alliance made at the managerial level and these 2 women were just terrible to most of the workers, and backed each other up on it. Ultimately the little people (me included) rose up to face the beasts by getting corporate involved. Thankfully now I do have my dream job, drawing and making video games! If all goes well I'll never clock in again.

    • @abitfrank
      @abitfrank  6 лет назад +9

      Ah! Thank you!
And... I can smell that burp from here. Both distance and time! Ew. Woof. I would so be tempted to spend my whole paycheck on art supplies - that sounds like heaven minus the toxic ones. There always are toxic ones, aren't there?
SO GLAD YOU ARE MAKING GAMES AND DRAWING. It's gonna go well!

I hated pushing sales on everyone. My managers told me to ask everyone on my shift to buy a candy bar and one of the customers snapped and yelled at me for asking the same question every time they came in. I’m like: “Like, lady, that’s my job. To push sales. Just say no if you don’t want it.”

My favorite job was when I was 16.
I was a goth, but landed working at a retirement home as a waitress.
Surprisingly, those residents, became some of my favorite people.
We had the demanding entitled types, sure. But we also had some of the most encouraging and kindest old folk, too. If you'd told me beforehand I'd enjoy their company so much, I'd've laughed until I was blue in the face.
Sure, it wasn't without the occasional creepy resident, but my male coworkers were always happy to come to the rescue from Mr "Sit on my lap, let me rub your shoulders".
But I genuinely loved the interactions with most of the residents each meal, and chilling with the Laundry Room Ghost as I folded the cloth napkins in the laundry room in the basement.

I had a summer job at a 'Wood Retailer' (basically they sold all kinds of wood, construction materials.). The job was mostly simple, help with deliveries, build Modell pieces, stock shelves. But the last two weeks were pretty bad.
The owner decided to do renovations so it was up to me (and only me) to build a facade for all the sheds where they stored the wood and to paint it grey. So I got to work. 8 hours a day building a wooden facade, painting it and paint some of the older sheds. On day two I noticed, that this old guy who also worked there was staring at me all me, all the time and he kept that up for the rest of the two weeks.
In the end, I was high of paint thinner fumes, looked like a troll from Homestuck (friggin water repelling outdoor paint), and developed an irrational disgust, for the color grey. I still get nauseous sometimes, when I see grey paint.

I also have a job I refuse to ever put on a resume. I spent the second half of my sophomore year of college as one of those people who calls your phone to give you a survey. It started out fine, but pigeon-holed me into too many hours on top of class and the fact it was all the way across town and I had to take the bus. I had to meet a specific quota of people who agreed to take surveys before the end of every shift, each survey had a script that I had to at least mostly stick to, and I couldn't do homework between automatically delivered calls like they promised because most of it was only available on my laptop which wasn't allowed on the floor. As time went on most people I called were fine, some were really nice and fun to talk to, and I think part of the reason I was hired was I said during the interview that I usually can't tell when people are mean or rude to me. This is completely true, as I learned a year before working as a cashier in a thrift store, but as I learned as a telephone surveyor and should've learned much earlier, when I can tell someone is being mean to me I take it very personally and depending on how hurtful they're being (usually extremely, I'm very dense) I have a chance of melting into a puddle of tears and uncontrollable reactions. The worst interaction with someone I called I don't even think was purposely hurtful; I was dutifully following my script some time after a discussion with my supervisor, the lady asked if I was a robot, and before I could answer her she told me I was and hung up. Combine this with the mounting stress of a slowly failing college sophomore career thanks to my inability to keep up with hours, and I finally stopped trying to stubbornly stick it out and quit a month before finals with the excuse that I needed the time to study because I had to write a reason for leaving on my 2-week notice and didn't think "I can't take the stress anymore and never should've interviewed in the first place." would be career viable going forward. I don't put it on my resume, because I never want to have a job like that again.

So far, I’ve only worked at two places in my life (I’m in the middle of high school). One is a fall exclusive job where I do pony rides with my lovely horseback riding instructor and have been doing since last year, and the other was working at a diner-grill place for exactly 2 shifts. The grill is 40 minutes away from my house, and I only went because my mother, who is obsessed with me getting social type job experience even though I am incredibly anxious in those setting, asked me if I’d work there as a busser as she was working there; I saw no reason to refuse, so I got my working papers and filled out the application. It was.... awkward. There are no other words for that experience but soul crushingly awkward. My first shift I was being trained my an older boy who was very quiet compared to the very loud rest of staff and restaurant. Of course, my mother was there too, and what’s worse is we have the same name so I was constantly confused as to who wanted who. It was not fun, especially since I’d take drink orders and if someone wanted alcohol I (being a minor who was barely old enough to legally work) had to go and find someone who could actually handle that stuff. Then, I worked my second shift a week later, and had a different buss boy training me and he was so nervous. He was a bit older than me and very nice, but he just seemed as nervous as I was. In addition, he had a similar name to another member of staff, think Ricky and Vicky. Even worse still, his name sounded kinda similar to my name. So it was...confusing. Another thing, my mother is like a customer service God; she thrives in those environments, she’s charming and level headed and just really good at it; I am not. Then my mother quit soon after that second shift and I never went back there because the forty minute ride was not worth my minimum wage first job. I got my 2 paychecks, promptly forgot they existed without cashing them, and found them like six months later and finally got the money. That experience told me that I cannot work in food service, I’m just bad at it; give me a repetitive task or clear instructions and I’ll do exactly what I should, but try and let me just deal with unpredictable people wanting food with my own mother in the room showing me up in every way and watching me and I will just flounder like a fish out of water.

I've found my way into an internship with a small animation company that makes cartoons online. First day. I drove to the address. It lead to an apartment complex with no commercial buildings in sight, except a laundromat and a liquor store across the street. I called the guy, and he was like, "Oh yeah, yeah, hang on, I'll get you." Oh. So this really was the place... He comes out, lets me into the gate, and we head for his room. First thing I see, piles upon piles of dusty Chinese knockoff anime merchandise all in their boxes, like a hoarder trying to open up a crappy anime store. "Oh, that stuff's for my side-gig, I run a toy shop online." Okaaaaaayyyyy... Step around the pile of dusty merchandise, and I his bed mattress on the floor, looking like he's been eating cup ramen and chips on top of it for years, old stains and dust, dirt, and God knows what flecked all over that thing. The computers that he used were pre-built Dells for business, nowhere NEAR the needed power for rendering a long Flash animation, a scene of 30 seconds pretty much took overnight, and you had to cross your fingers and pray for it not to freeze during the process... He had about 3 working computers and a laptop, all around the same specs, I opted for drawing with the mouse and a pen tool because using the stylus was just unworkable. I'd try drawing a smooth curved line, and the lag took about 3 seconds for that line to appear, and many times, the curve either got reinterpreted as 20 right angles from point A to point B, or just an outright straight line. On day one, halfway through the orientations, 3 PM, I suddenly hear movement behind the door I never questioned. "Oh yeah, don't worry about him, he's just my room mate." Umm?? Huh... Okay then. The door opens, revealing a hungover rocker from the early 80's, blonde curly hair to his shoulders, goatee, bags under his eyes, loose tank top, and boxers. Aha. So that was the source of the smell of cigarettes and weed... We get introduced, he seems chill, but I'll make sure not to cross his line, he looks like he can get reactive. So yeah. My first real animation work was done in the grungiest little place and I learned that animation studios may come in all shapes and sizes and work culture, lol. And that the "Scary Truths about the Animation Industry" video is 100000% real, and I'm back in school for a more stable job because of it! The end!

I spent a week working for a company that represents charities in shopping centres, and it was the worst time of my life.
I was constantly under pressure to get people signed up for donations, and everyone I tried to talk to wasn't interested and flatout ignored me.
One of my coworkers finally got me to sign up the one guy who actually stayed and listened, even though he was MENTALLY ILL AND ON A DISABILITY PENSION, and I knew I could never work another day for them again so I quit that night.

I think the worst job I was in was my first Software Development job; I had been interested in coding since the start of high school so this was like a dream come true for me.
Everything seemed fine at first, everyone was friendly, could wear casual clothing.
But ah........I was in a team by myself, with no official prior experience, writing in a language I'd never used.
But that's okay! Because I could ask my direct manager THE CEO for assistance when HE WASN'T BUSY......(spoiler alert he was always busy)
So I would always get in trouble for asking questions and after working full days of work I would bring my work home and continue / learn at home which ended up me developing some stress-related habits
This went on for about a year until a recruiter approached me about a job and somehow I thought any other job would be WORSE than that.
Funny enough, I went to the interview, nailed it, started working for this place and it was the most amazing workplace for about 3 years xD
Sometimes the grass IS greener on the other side. :)

Rat, mouse, mold and WEASEL infested run down theatrical costume shop with a broken a/c (in 103 average temp) with coworkers who were more clique-y than a bunch of teenagers in a school drama series FOR 2 SUMMERS because my parents didn't believe that it was hell on Earth and forced me to stick with it until I had 4 full blown panic attacks (hyperventilating, rocking, sobbing uncontrollably, muscles locking up, etc) in the span of 2 weeks just from thinking about my next shift and then going into a spiraling depression that made my doctor tell them to never force me to go back again. I cringe every time anyone mentions that forsaken place.

I learned that if you are super pale and are pretty much a vampire then retail is not the way to go. I hated putting on a fake smile just to get yelled at by customers and then yelled at by my boss because I didn't get enough of my work done due to being yelled at all day >.> never again.

I'm not really sure what my dream job is... it used to make games and express myself in some way, simple enough. :p Or maybe be an author, an artist, an actor, be a scientist and do science stuff, etc...
But sometimes as either a hobby, career, or both, I kind of want to travel the world, maybe be an explorer like Exploring with Josh or be a youtuber like you, or learn more about my cultural heritage, whether it's from my literal bloodline or not, and so on...
I want to be free like a bird and experience new things instead of feeling tied down. :p
Who knows, maybe I can go to some haunted places and see spooky ghosts with my very eyes for the first time. :O
Otherwise, most other stuff seems really boring. :p

I had a love-hate relationship with my first retail job. I worked in Jewelry at a department store. You had to maintain a monthly quota, basically sell jewelry insurance at 33%, AND try to get people to enroll for the credit card. If you did not maintain your monthly quota OR the 33%, you got fired. Oh! And you had to carry that on your name badge at all time so if anyone from corporate asked about our sales, we had to show it AT ANY TIME. AND if you met your monthly quota every month at the end of the year, it meant you were moving up and YOUR QUOTA INCREASED! YAY!
The Love: We ran on an honor system. So if anyone mentioned you by name, that sale was SUPPOSED to go to you. As upsetting as it was to spend time with a customer and up sale, the second they mentioned anyone else's name, that sale went to them. You had to mark in THEIR employee number. We very much had each other's back...except one person. We high-fived each other when we met our weekly insurance rate and would get friendly competitive (think: "Hey, Lucy! I just got my fifth insurance. How many do you have? Oh, I'll top that!")
The hate: We had one girl who stole sales. We HATED her. We had no way to prove it. All those wonderful up-sales would be credited to her and it got us all angry. So, we kind of teamed up to remember which customers spoke with who and would casually mention each other by name and do our best to make sure the appropriate person got their commission. Also, this was during the beginning of the recession in 2008. It was already VERY difficult to get your sales goals since we were nowhere near any freeway for fresh blood...I mean, new clients. Even the experienced reps were having a hard time meeting their goals. So you can imagine hustling with your all, giving 110% a week before Black Friday (pre-sales for the win), and being pulled into the manager's office to hear "You missed your sales goals for x-months. We have to let you go." Broke my poor little heart and crushed me when I found out they meant two months in the beginning of the year, when returns were being made left and right (returns killed me) and September, the slowest month of the year for us.
