- Arriving in Southern Thailand's largest town, we head directly from the airport for a local lunch at Auntie Chuen's rice noodle buffet ('Kanom Jeen'). Surely one of Thailand's best 'fast foods,' and today I want to show you why its both the MOST awesome thing you could eat for lunch when you're here... and the most healthy choice as well!
Southern Thailand is well-known among locals from other regions of Thailand for its beaches, its slower pace of life (to go with the higher temperatures) and of course for its spicy cuisine. I have been hyping all of these things to my wife Li for quite a few months now, in preparation for this trip, and we are so excited to finally be here!
Thank you for choosing to spend some time with us today - we really appreciate it :). Coming straight from the airport (in any city), you know exactly what you want, and how you want it, and today Auntie Cheun did not let us down in the least.
"The third time was the charm," a saying I can use today, because it really did take me 3 times to get here with food still left in the front cabinets. When YOU visit 'Kanomjeen Pa Chuen,' be SURE to arrive on time (don't trust the Google maps times like I did!).

On Google Maps, you can see the closing time at around 4pm... be careful, this restaurant usually sells out at 1pm, if not sooner. Get here at 10am (which is just after they open) to guarantee yourself a good selection!

it's the cutest thing when Li is already excited, but then when she tastes something she loves & it's extra good, or she tastes something she's never had & loves, her expressions as her taste buds register the different aspects of the dish. I'm so glad there's people out & about again, I know that was depressing for ya'll wondering if the businesses would ever be able to make a come back.
To be honest, I had to swap my shirt out after drooling on it half way through this video ;) Another great adventure my friend! Thanks to you and Li for sharing this.

The fact that you went to this place straight from the airport is a testament to the quality of their cuisine and service 👍 The Auntie ( owner ) and her daughter are so hospitable helping you folks select the best dishes 😋👌Whoa look at the spread looks scrumptious 😋 This is actually the first time I am seeing the veggies under some shaved ice 👌The fish with noodles and pea egg plant in a spicy green curry is worth a visit to this place 👍 It’s my observation that more often than not the “Peoples Lunch” is more tastier than a fine dining experience. The fried chicken has a crunch yet super moist and succulent( drool worthy ) . Looks like South Thailand is truly diverse and that’s the beauty of such places . Wondering why you didn’t amp up the fish curry noodles with some spicy condiment or vinegar ? Then MasterChef Li gives her pro tip to Joel 😀 I simply love the way Li eats her food so cleanly and with grace 👌 She is also a great analyst of the flavour profile , be it the herb in this case . Chicken and Li are synonymous like Joel with Stink beans / Durian 😀 Soothing background music 🎶 The dessert looks super yummy . This is a variant of Kheer that we call in India ; the difference being we don’t add coconut milk but we do add sago seeds or Sabja as we call . Possibly a tad too sweet for our dear Joel 😀 It’s indeed a busy place 👌 So sweet of you to acknowledge the owners and staff each and every time you finish dining at a place . Extremely happy for you and Li that you finally got to eat what you wanted to at this wonderful eatery. My favorite Thai food is Khanom Jeen! The rice noodles and the variety of curries and toppings(veggies) Ao Roy Mac mac or as they say southern Thai - Roy Jan Who - Delicious

Hi Joel and lovely Li 😊 Awesome video as always and what a fun spot to eat. The dishes look amazing with all the fresh herbs and greens. My kind of meal for sure. Thai curries are so unique and so different to Indian curries. You would never find a curry with rice noodles in Indian restaurants. I love noodles and not crazy about rice so probably why I prefer Thai food lol. Now we need to see you come back to Africa and do some videos here and show Li where you grew up 😊❤️🙏. Massaman dish as always u know I love Tom yum noodles qn she made me Gaeng tai pla which was off menu I think that's how you say it...that blew my mind strong taste an spicy .was absolutely epic....she used to cook for the royal thai family in Bangkok an now she has a restaurant here in town...anyway food looks absolutely delicious my brother qn sister an we wish you nothing but health an happiness an many blessings fam....keep up the good work homie big 🫂

Hey Joel and Li! I found out the Dragon Thai place is southern Thai chef. 3 people, 2 appetizers were near $100 US.
I went level 2 spicy basil herb shrimp fried rice(found 2 thin strips of a basil leaf in whole bowl), brother got extra hot and spicy beef fried rice...
0 flavor in mine. No chillis anywhere to be found. No fresh herbs or veg on table. Not even soy sauce! 😒 I tasted my brothers who was level 4 with 5 being hottest they serve and Sriracha is hotter! Good grief! The waitress had no clue what was in anything and had to ask chef what type of Thai recipes he used. We admittedly chose standard things on first visit to check it out but I will never go back. I can go to Panda Express and pay a quarter of the price and taste the same. So sad! Kinda figured it would be though because this is Texas. They offered "fresh" red snapper. $30. We are nowhere near any water except the lake and no snapper in it so that price had to be for frozen....
Next time going to Dallas or Houston to find something that may come closer to authentic. Sheesh! Wish me better luck next time...

I went to an obscure Thai takeout spot recently to film a video and was impressed with a khao mun gai tod (fried crispy, boneless chicken) that I ordered. It came with ginger rice and a side salad. I thought of it as "Thai style fried chicken." But, I guess it isn't. Because this Hat Yai style fried chicken might have something to say about that (LoL). I've never had Hat Yai style fried chicken. I wouldn't even know where to get it (if it is even available) where I am.
Vablonsky!! Hey great to see your name man, and thanks for the story today. I recently had a friend visit, he had managed to find southern Thai food in the USA, including this exact fried chicken. I couldn’t believe it, yes I’m sure it would be difficult, but your fried chicken fat rice does sound awesome and in fact quite authentic. Even within Thailand, only in the south can you have this curry battered red fried chicken.

That there is more than one kind of authentic "Thai fried chicken." I bet your friend who found that Southern/Hat Yai style fried chicken did so in the Los Angeles area. There is such a vibrant Thai community in L.A. with many food offerings that would be difficult to find elsewhere in the U.S. Thanks for your reply. I'll keep my eye out for that chicken!

Why do some people chew their noodle and some dont? I've noticed alot doesn't chew their noodles.. I make hot rice and milk sugar or brown sugar and vanilla extract and nutmeg and it's a for breakfast you can add cinnamon on top afterwards

Johan, hey man! Poisoned never, as in throwing up? No never, but of course after almost 36 years of life, eating food in unlimited numbers of different local spots in dozens of different countries, of course I’ve had some (sudden bathroom visits) :).
I would say that in my own experience, the less variety you consume, and the more careful you are to only eat a few certain types of foods, the FAR higher chance that you will get sick. Our immune systems need to be used, maybe not intentionally tested but… well then again, maybe they should be!
