- I have gone almost one year without a visit, and the noodles here never ever fail :) so what a great chance to visit an old favorite place when Martin comes to visit Chiang Mai. This is our first stop, and I want to pick one that's a guarantee basically, a sure-thing when it comes to culture and experience, flavor and meal awesomeness, and of course finally the friendliness in the hands of these excellent restaurant owners.
*SPECIAL COSTUME I am wearing for this day actually has nothing to do with this restaurant, or this recipe, however people of Hmong descent do live in this village (and actually the village is just referred to locally as "Baan Hmong" on top of Doi Pui (this mountain's name)) - I have had the privilege to make many videos eating food of Hmong origin, I have been able to visit many beautiful villages and experience a lot of friendliness (in many different parts of Thailand), but I've never taken the chance to dress in the traditional colors or wear this cool and unique jewelry. So again these clothes are not Thai, they are Hmong, although there are many Hmong who call Thailand home, this is something very unique and very distinct amidst all the diversity within the country of Thailand.*
It is so good to be here, and thank YOU for joining us as well! If you are not familiar with Martin then well, you are in for a treat :) He definitely has my favorite Instagram channel for the entire year 2024, I literally cannot open the app fast enough when he tells me "hey so I have a new running video..." he is the best!! Martin Bravo Siam on Instagram (and he has a RUclips channel now as well, doing great!)

I think is delicious!! And really unique! The thickness of the stew was incredible 😮 Joel really knows where to find the best foods! 🔥

Well honestly as now it seems SO many people have seen my Instagram/RUclips recommendations for this exact restaurant, they’re actually quite busy with tourists now… and I would still tell you to visit!! For sure… but I am also now looking for a new place (a new yet to be discovered gem of Khao soi), so you can join me on that!!

Love Baan Hmong! Haven't been there in years though. Hope they're OK in all this rain. WOW! Pt lll of the same Khao Soi place! Good! It's sure to help them! Too crowded at the places in town that are now famous. Just was on the Live stream but needed more Joel positivity after the stream cut off! Hey! As an idea for videos; chase down the original Khao Soi at the Myanmar restaurants in Chiang Mai. There are many that could use some boosting. Like Klong Khum (up a few sois [haha] from Payod Shan.) I don't think anyone has tracked down org Khao Soi (maybe Gary Butler, the 'Roaming Cook'?) OTR just did a great little documentary on Burmese food.
Hey hey Don! I remember you asking, I remember this message (I doubt this guy you are mentioning has tracked down any origins of anything :) but ok... I will check out the OTR!) - but also, I did have the privilege once of traveling to several places in Northern Laos (which would have been very close to "Original Khao Soi"), followed by northern Thailand, with Dr. Hanuman, possibly the most knowledgable Thai chef in the world, surely one of... Mark made the video :)

And, I definitely wondered the same, the answer is two-part - he has gotten used to the humidity, as have I :) over 10 years living here now for both of us… but also, he has tested a few fabrics for this exact reason!! He said some previous shirts were totally impossible 😂😂😂

Thanks Joel. Khao Soi must have adapted to the Burmese HKAUK-HSWEAR at some point in history. The Burmese also add Coconut Milk.

Na Hak! Good morning! Thanks for getting super excited about this dish so rich in both history and flavor!! Many times on many trips to Luang Prabang I have enjoyed the tomato broth, clear and without coconut milk, much more basic and still so good, as well as trips to Northern Thailand (Chiang Rai) where one can have this "Original style" Khao Soi (which does not look very much like the orange curry milky thick broth, for sure!) - both are wonderful but yes its so good to be able to appreciate the history :) again, great to see you!!
