Nice to see my Athletic Club represented on one of these lists. While the cantera/local player policy does have political ramifications, I wouldn't say that the club is more nationalist or "separatist" than Real Sociedad. La Real used to have the same policy until 1989 (only gave it up due to Basque talent being either bought by rich clubs or Athletic), and their region votes more for radical nationalist/separatist parties than Athletic Clubs. Within the Athletic Club-Real Sociedad Rivalry, there is a mutual respect on the level of them both being clubs with strong Basque identities (this doesn't apply to Eibar, Alavés, and Osasuna, for various reasons)... so if anything, I think it should be a tie between the two teams. While outsiders view Athletic as more political because of its policies, from fan perspective, they're equally political.
@@zzz5094 1. Alaves's region, Alava, has more cultural links to Castille than the coastal provinces, and except for certain pockets in the regional capital, there isn't as much Basque nationalist sentiment. The region just gave a seat in Basque parliament to a neo-fascist pro-Spain party. They're proud to be the government capital of the Basque Autonomous community, but they tend to be of the "I'm Basque, but also Spanish" ideology. Still, much of their advertisements and slogans are in Basque, because in the Basque Autonomous Community they're trying to make it an institutional language. Also, most clubs in Galicia, Catalunya and Valencia do this with their regional languages, and it's not seen as nationalist. (Even the club called ESPANYOL has slogans in Catalán all over its stadium) 2. Eibar was founded right after the Spanish civil war, so for their first 40 years or so of existence they couldn't develop institutional ties to Basque nationalism or identity. While the town itself is very Basque, the club has risen to prominence in recent years through its ability to sign players on the cheap and resell them at profit. They don't have a significant local youth program that I know of. The only Basque players they sign are typically Real Sociedad or Athletic youth players who couldn't find a spot in the senior team, and the two big clubs typically buy them back if they show any promise (see Ander Capa and Dani Garcia). People love them because they are a smartly managed club. They represent the opposite end of the spectrum from Athletic's policy. La Real and Athletic were created and had success during the peak years of the first wave of Basque nationalism (1896-1936). Furthermore, they represent the regional capitals of the two "most Basque" areas: Bizkaia, where Basque nationalism was founded, and Gipuzkoa, where more Basque is spoken and there are more rural traditions. They both have had Basque-only policies for most of their histories. After Franco died, the clubs became synonymous with the push to legalize the Basque national flag and other manifestations of national identity. I could go on like this, but ultimately they are two evenly matched rivals from the two unquestionably Basque regions.

As for Burnley that’s what I mean by we’d end up with a load of Zenit’s, the racist twats will be a loud minority at some clubs
@Bosco's box Left-wing nationalism isn't about expelling people. It's about creating polities defined by their rightful owners. The North of Ireland is occupied from Westminster, Irish republicans want to change that, they don't want to force out protestants and unionists who have equal representation on the flag of Ireland as catholics. In much the same way Palestine is occupied by a settler colonial state. We should abolish that state, not force out Jewish people, many of whom have lived in Palestine peacefully with their Muslim and Christian neighbours for centuries.
Whats wrong with that? You can accept the original borders while being against the illegal occupations that have broken UN mandate. Many Isrealis hold this position, of course they are branded false Jews for supporting international law.
@@AndyTomlins keep preaching my brother. The idea that it is someone anti semetic to oppose colonialism is anti semetic in itself. Athletic Bilbao is not a xenophobic/racist club at all. The region had always suffered from identity crisis due to various reasons I don't even want to mention. A club is trying to maintain identity and suddenly they are racist bla bla bla. If they are racist then the world is fucked.
@@djevo5662 they also have had entire fan groups banned for racism... even this year lol. But yeah it tends to be a section of fanbase rather than the club itself since they have taken actions like banning those
Because Rangers' politics is more or less based off of the idea "let's do the opposite of what Celtic do". Ever notice when Celtic fans started coming out in support of Palestine a number of Israeli flags started popping up around Ibrox?
Believe it or not Real Sociedad could be considered a much more pro-indepence (I hate the "separatist" term) club than Athletic. Gipuzkoa is the most basque province of the seven which conform Euskal Herria, it's where euskara is prevalent in a lot of zones and politically the IA (the Abertzale Left) earns most votes. Bizkaia has more inmigrants (absolutely no problem with them) and there the PNV wins, which is a regionalist party, they don't care about the independence.

Do a " 7 European left wing clubs" video. As a left leaning man, I admire left win politics, especially in football. So far I've learned I admire Schalke FC, on account of their left wing ideologies of fan ownership etc. I've learned I admire AEK Athens, who oppose racism and hatred. I've learned I admire Athletic Bilbao, who strengthen local talent.
I oppose racism and I am about as right wing as they come politically. So what exactly is your point? Leftism "feels" good and that's why you and others like you admire it so much. It "feels" good to simply say "I oppose racism/bigotry/etc", but it doesn't MEAN anything. So what is racism? Calling someone different than you a nasty name? No, that's just being a nasty person. People have the right to be nasty, and then they can deal with the consequences. If that was racism, the whole world would be racist. How about telling someone you are banned from joining our team because of what you look like, believe, what your sexual orientation is, etc. Yes, that would be. And I am on the right and would never support such a thing. Racism and bigotry is not synonymous with politics. The left likes to paint this picture of that uneducated, knuckle dragging right wing hater but that is absolute nonsense. Read up on South American countries sometime, most of the big ones anyways. They are some of the most racist places on the planet and they are all run by left wing governments. Not saying right wingers can't be racist because they can, and are. But your political views do not definite your views on race. That is an entirely separate thing, usually life experience and culture.

Keep making great vids.
Saying racism is bad and branding yourself as an anti racist are two different things. One is political and one is not. I agree racism is bad, but I am not an anti racist...in the same sense that I believe adultery is bad, alcoholism is bad, and just plain being a mean nasty person is bad, but none of these things are illegal, and if you want to be a bad person you have every right to be so, and deal with the consequences thereof. To me there is a big difference.
@@100percentSNAFU I dont see how theres a difference. You seem to be caught up in polarized labels also and are ignoring definitions. By you saying you think racism is bad that then in turn makes you an anti-racist. If you witnessed someone being a racist and called them out then you are being anti-racist. Being an anti-racist is not being anti-free speech which I think you're implying unless I read that wrong. It's simply being a person who doesn't put up with it and calls it out. Imo if you don't call it out or back people calling it out then you dont really think its bad as you are tolerating it. I just think people need to stop letting the news and the internet twist definitions and assign their own agenda to them when they are simple things such as being against racism.

Athletic Club or Athletic Bilbao has that name and their colours is because they were founded by a Mackem! I don't hold that against them though! I remember someone commenting on a video of British chants vs American chants by pointing out that Celtic, who are in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdon, are an Irish club, not a Scottish club, despite being based in Scotland, not Ireland. One of their reasons being that they have fans in Ireland (many clubs have fans outside of their country) and that the club was founded by an Irishman (by that logic, all Americans are English, because was founded by the thirteen colonies who were in turn, founded by English people)

Now, where was I? Oh yeah getting into this vid.
fascism and communism both have brutal regimes. as soon as a communist party gets to power they devolve to the capitalist fascist way almost instantly. you cannot call having a party with all the power communism, yet all of u always do, and u worship those past or present dictators that were just as bad as any far right dictator. thats why i dont support communism, it's often the same as authoritarian dictatorships. there's way too much room for corruption, that's why communism won't work. If you have a party that run everything and make the rules is that the communist freedom you're looking for as opposed to fascist leadership? at the end of the day it's just passing power from 1 dictator to the next, doesn't matter what way u put it every communist party has been just as bad as the fascist ones. just way too much corruption in the world for the current state of communism to be a fix for that, although i like the idea, it just won't work, you need fundamental changes to make corruption as limited as possible so it doesn't become like every other brutal state hungry for power. (went on a rant at 3 am u dont have to read this or respond and u probably dont care ik im sorry)

both are different things even though both are food!
point being, you don’t get bunch of racist trying to exterminate people who are not of there own colour or religion in a club like St Pauli but you do on one of those pretty neo Nazi-extremist ones!
Fran Ohmsford yeah Liverpool is probably the most left wing city in England so that makes sense, just a shame there’s very rarely organised action through the club. I imagine it’s because at the end of the day the big English clubs have become businesses and the owners don’t want to rock the boat. As for Burnley that’s what I mean by we’d end up with a load of Zenit’s, the racist twats will be a loud minority at some clubs

Celtic: Supports Palestine
Also Celtic: has ties with a club in Israel
To be fair Hapoel is a very left wing club and some of their fans even support Palestine so it makes sense
There are many Jews in my family and none of them support colonialism. The idea that we must support Israel for some reason is far more insulting than any critisism of Israel we hear.

Athletic Bilbao is not a xenophobic/racist club at all. The region had always suffered from identity crisis due to various reasons I don't even want to mention. A club is trying to maintain identity and suddenly they are racist bla bla bla. If they are racist then the world is fucked.

Katidis story was a little sad actually. From what I read from comments during that time period he truly didn't know because he skipped most of school in favour of football. He was even the captain of the U-21 Greek team that made it in the European U-21 final only to lose to Spain. He just saw it and thought it was cool. Centrism is an absence of conviction and not a real political position. It's a good spot for people who find morality negotiable

One side is racist and proud and the other side is anti-racist and proud so theres nothing you are lying about and trying to convince anyone of by saying the facts and "manifestos" of these supporters.
