Bochum fans boycott away games at Red Bull Leipzig, thats why there weren't many of them. Some other clubs fanbases do it too. For example, Freiburg fans go to their U23 teams game instead of going to RB away.
@awaydaysfootball yeah that's true. Also, Bochum fans are class if you ever are in NRW. Their away support is usually quite good as well. RB with the worst atmosphere in both ends 😂
I just don't understand how you can hate a club because of tradition in this day and age. We live in capitalism, it's the 21st century. RB Leipzig is only working for the good of German football: the Bundesliga is becoming much more competitive and entertaining. Do you want Bayern to win the league easily every year? Is that really what you want? The German public may have had enough of that, but the DFL does not just show football for the German public!
@@awaydaysfootball I went Leipzig last year. Enjoyable city. I see a lokomotive game. They are traditionally the biggest club in Leipzig. There is also another club called Chemie Leipzig. They contest the Leipzig derby with lokomotive

Lokomotive und Chemie Leipzig still control the city. Look at the streetart. They have big fanbases and both average attendances around 5000 in the 4th division. A lot of people going to RB Leipzig used to follow those teams in the past but dogded them for not being succesfull enough, probably even before RB Leipzig was founded. They don't care about the club, they just want to watch succesful football. Fair enough, but thats not what german football culture is about. It’s quite interesting that, historically, East German football clubs in the former GDR were always linked to a certain company. The other two traditional clubs of Leipzig are called Lokomotiv and Chemie. Lokomotiv belonged to the railway company while Chemie belonged to the local chemical industry, just like Chemie Halle (now Hallescher FC). Dynamo Dresden belonged to the police department while Dynamo Berlin belonged to the Ministry of State Security. The main economic activity in Cottbus was its energy plant, hence the football club Energie Cottbus. Erzgebirge Aue used to be called Pneumatik Aue and later Wismut Aue and was owned by the local construction tool company, with Hansa Rostock being owned by the local fishing industry and FSV Zwickau, then called Motor Zwickau, being owned by the local car and engine manufacturing company.
I think you don't get why RB is hated, it's not just because they are owned by a company. It is because the company has nothing to do with the city and just wanted to make a road to glory with a club. In the lower leagues they spend 10 times the money their competitors have been able to spend. They also asked Dynamo Dresden, Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1860 München and other clubs if they would be interested. They simply rebranded the whole club they bought. They just don't care about basic sport values
I highly recommend Gladbach. Went there last season, sat next to the away end which was also Bochum that day. Met a group of Germans lads, some of which were Bochum fans and ended up having a massive session with them in Cologne.
I was at Gladbach the night before this Leipzig match. It was the opener versus Bayer. It was indeed an incredible experience. The atmosphere was truly stunning.
Gladbach Fans are incredible, they even helped the families of the Hillsborough disaster raising money to give to them, will always love that club as a “second” club
It should be Puskás Akadémia, the Hungarian giant club is located in a 1000 person small village which is famous of the football club, and the village's famous born: Viktor Orbán who is the Hungarian prime minister, the stadium is almost in Viktor's old house's back garden.
I’m old enough to remember watching Lokomotiv Leipzig in the Cup Winners Cup final in 1987: they lost to Ajax with the goal scored by a young Marco van Basten.
I am from Austria and was a big fan of Austria Salzburg in the 90s. But then die club declined and nearly went bankrupt. Without Red Bull there would be no professional football team in Salzburg i think. And the investment of Red Bull liftet the Austrian football to a much higher level.
Salzburg is for austrians what leipzig is to eastern germans. RB elevated the level of football there and therefore the ppl dont care that much about the construct behind it.
You may not be old enough to remember Lokomotive Leipzig which was a strong East German club, such as Dynamo Dresden and FC Magdeburg often representing that country in various European competitions. Though I;m surprised as you are well read when it comes to football.
AwayDates is a genius spinoff idea, go to a random city and see if you can convince a Hinge/Tinder date to come join you for a date at the match on the day
Living in Leipzig myself, I‘d agree on the term »family club«. To me, it feels like the experience tends to be one of a more casual activity that’s just as entertaining as anything you’d be doing on your typical weekend alone or with your kids. I think the brand(!) Red Bull, what they do and what they stand for besides selling beverages, emphasises that sort of entertainment. The target group of the clubs fanbase is literally the average Joe - they even partnered with the city of Leipzig to include some benefits (2x free or reduced tickets to a game I believe and some other little goodies) in their welcoming gift for citizens who’d move here. Ofc they target football enthusiasts; they have fan organisations and »Ultras« as well but for the most part i perceive it as described. Since the club does have little history to some or none according to others, there just isn’t that immersive, exciting and dramatic atmosphere you would get during a game of a traditional club. Yet, I don’t think it’s entirely reprehensible because football should be enjoyable in a way where you don’t necessarily have to be a die-hard stan to feel included. And it’s RedBull still - they don’t have to try that much anyway… On the other hand, the issue with the 50+1 rule and RB Staff making up most of the club‘s members is just horrific. I bet it’d be different if ordinary fans would be allowed to participate more and requirements for membership were adjusted. But for that, i think that literal industry plant of a football club has yet to achieve anything decent for people to care more about that situation. Evidently, they do not yet. Anyways, great video and hope the two of you had a good time staying here!
Sadly as a fan of Casino Salzburg back in the early 90's when I lived for a year near the Stadion Lehen RB did buy them out and change everything just like Leipzig. The sad part is that when I went back for a Austrian Bundesliga game during one of my visits it was empty. And I mean empty. It was cold, but that's winter in Europe and doesn't keep you guys inside so when I asked friends they said there isn't much support for them because they continually dominate the Austrian Bundesliga and then crash out early doors from the Champions League. True old school fans miss the purple and white and what Salzburg football used to be. As mentioned below it may have gone bankrupt so RB saved it but a lot (for lack of a better word) support a restart of the old Salzburg Austria club that plays in lower divisions still and at a small field on the other side of the airport from the big stadium. I haven't made it to one of those yet but I plan to
Leipzig not selling out games is kinda a meme... When I was in Leipzig 2020 for Dreamhack 2020 in february I literally would have been given tickets for free... They were asking people in the city centre if they were up to watch Bundesliga... Because that fixture was nowhere near to be sold out. And they didn't could have had that... I had to leave that day tough back to my at the time home Cologne. And despite them rarely selling out, you literally have to buy fixtures as a combi ticket. Top fixtures like Bayer, Bayern, Dortmund with literally Heidenheim, Bochum and the like...
Making fun of the most hated club for not having so many fans is kinda stupid. You could blame them for the way they were founded instead of laughing about them for not filling their stadium completely for a match against Bochum.
@@figure.09-LP meanwhile my club you rarely get tickets on the free market. And that is regardless they struggled to stay in the Bundesliga. Köln is selling out basically to members only. You can get Women’s and U21 or U18 tickets but rarely Bundesliga. The only time in the current season you could get tickets on the free market it was Köln - Braunschweig (after Braunschweig haven’t sold their allocated away tickets in full) Which has been a rare sight for Köln since we were in lofty heights of Europa League and Coference League
"Tradition starts somewhere" - yeah lad. You're in Leipzig. The place the DFB was founded. You have Lok Leipzig who played in a European final. Chemie won two league titles in East Germany. You've got tradition on your doorstep
@awaydaysfootball football in the former East Germany was wild. Suspected government involvement in fixing games, 100% government doping of national team players, players and whole clubs picked up and moved at the will of administrators, insane team names, it's quite literally bonkers. Leipzig's a city with a pretty crackers football story all in all.
@@BannersOnTheWall And how many of the teams from East Germany now play in the top division in Germany? Union Berlin and Leipzig are the only 2 and a big reason for that is the 50+1 rule. I get why the rule exists BUT it does significantly benefit clubs from the richer West German than the poorer East.
@@spikeychris but the problem is not the 50 plus 1 rule. The Problems are the still ongoing huge infrastructural differences between east and west germany
@@Noah-rw9on yes that plays a role as well but the 50 plus 1 rule also helps keep western german football clubs in the ascendency because they are in a more wealthy regions generally.
The funny thing is, they built the RedBull Leipzig Stadium inside an old traditional stadium that could fit 100.000 to have a capacity of 40.000 seats only for Leipzig to be unable to fill the stadium
If you want to experience an MLS club with more history and excitement, I can't recommend a trip to Columbus enough. First team in the league, and currently one of the best in the league, but you gotta get here before Wilfried Nancy gets poached by a Europen club. Absolutely top class manager.
Having been to a couple RB matches when they were in the lower leagues, the point about there being a sanitized match day experience is actually a big draw for a lot of fans. Leipzig’s traditional clubs (Chemie and Lok) both have had and still have massive issues with riots, hooliganism and general mismanagement. My feeling was that lots of people in Leipzig just want to be able to watch a somewhat successful team in peace.
Hi Ellis, I hope u see this. I once met you in the classic football shirts on Manchester and was amazed by how kind and humble you were. I wish you all the best.
What a video.. reminds me of the old school copa 90 days. Leipzig has a similar vibe to Hoffenheim also in the Bundesliga.. when I went ads for Audi & SAP overpowered the noise of the fans every few minutes…
Visit Peru (or more of South America), our Liga 1 isn’t the best in terms of skill, but the atmosphere and emotion on the field and stands you will feel exists nowhere else.
Apart from the whole Red Bull thing, it is really strange to me that people from Leipzig would choose to support RB Leipzig given that the city already has two main teams with big histories (Lok and Chemie). I could understand it more if the club was located in a big city with no major football teams. Also I have a friend who has a season ticket for VfB Stuttgart. He has been to every home game in the last 10 years or so except the games against Leipzig. He also doesn't watch the games on TV when we play them away.
It's precisely because of this. (I'm from Aue, not Leipzig, but sufficiently close I suppose) Lok (VfB) and Chemie (Sachsen) Leipzig have tons of history between them. The First all german Champion in 1903, the East german rivalry, both relatively successful until East germany fell off. Both bancrupt a few times since. An interresting picture of the interweaving club histories I found... de.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC_Sachsen_Leipzig#/media/Datei:FC_Sachsen_Leipzig_grafische_Historie.png (blue Lok and green Chemie) Bottom line is: they hate each other. With a passion. And no one in their right mind is going to touch any of them. And most important both seem to be okay with that. So the best thing anyone could do was found a completely new club to rally around. (Well, Markranstädt... almost nobody knew or cared about before the takeover. It's still not the _right_ way to do it, but it was a way to get away with.) Do i like the red bull way? No. Certainly not in football. They do some fancy niche sports though. Do I support a L team? No. We have football at home here. L is a 30 times bigger city so I'm not mad they have a team in a higher league. What I do understand is people being sick of the Lok/Chemie rivalry ruining both clubs and wanting a new start.
Because I as a person from Leipzig just think that the to be 6th biggest city in Germany (currently 8th) should have an adequate representation in terms of football quality. Honestly, Lok and Chemie are a shame from a football perspective. At this point they are just angry children because they are not relevant
@@CollineinfachCollinexBut how is it „adequate representation“ for an Eastern German city when an Austrian company basically ignores your values, buys your heritage and completely derails it? There has barely been any player from Eastern Germany even playing for Leipzig in recent years - with the exception of some youth players who only made a few appearances.
They don't support but go and watch them. They're customer, not supporters. It's entertainment (not in The Jam's sense, of course) devoid of any tradition or football culture.
About the lawn sports thing, in German it's ,,Rasenballsport", it does roughly translate to lawn ball sport, however lawn ball is ,,Kugelstoßen" in German, not ,,Rasenball". Rasenball literally just means lawn and ball, a non-existant/rarely used word wich what makes it even weirder
22:58 I disagree with this. Most MLS teams are franchises, which means their base is only made of people who support that team because it's the big team of the area. True passion comes in the USL with all the local communities of the teams getting involved in making the club mean somethint
except for the fact that USL teams are also franchises and their fan base is largely made up of people who support that team because it's the biggest in the area (as far as the USL championship is concerned)
All pro sports in the U.S. are pretty much franchises. USL run a franchise based league with requirements to be in certain leagues as well, which is why some are destined to be stuck in League One forever as they probably will never meet the requirements to move up to the Championship

Not talking about football, just to give you some more information about the city: Leipzig is actually a booming city. The fastest growing in Germany which has lots of green areas and many hip districs. People call it the new Berlin because many of the so called cool people move from there, also because Berlin rents became to expensive.
I’ve been to Leipzig over a year ago (the city). I really liked it. Went to Leipzig and Dresden with my dad after doing my high school finals. I preferred Leipzig. It felt more alive to me. Dresden has most of its beauty jam-packed in a smaller surface area, making it feel like an outdoor museum. Whereas Leipzig just felt more lively, more city-like. As someone who wouldn’t really like to live in cities, I’ve made a list of (smaller/medium) cities I would most want to live in, based on personal impression during my visits. Leipzig is on that list. How was the panorama tower the highest rated tourist attraction in the city…? The views are nice, but the building… You have actual nice buildings in Leipzig. Quite a few of them. The Leipzig zoo might have been one of my favourite zoos ever. If you like zoos, you should visit zoo Leipzig. The Gondwanaland area was really awesome. And for a zoo located in a city, it feels really spacious and secluded. I don’t like where RB Leipzig came from to reach their success. I like the players Leipzig and Salzburg have helped grow. I find that Leipzig especially often has some interesting players. I just don’t like the overarching institution. Plus, Salzburg players are often transferred to Leipzig. Multi club owners are not good for the sport. 8:08 Good point. I’m currently on holiday and went to Freiburg yesterday and saw quite a few Freiburg kits. I’d even seen a Schalke flag waaaays off from Gelsenkirchen. And you basically always see some Bayern kits here or there wherever you are in Germany. But in Leipzig…? I’m not sure I saw many Leipzig kits. I only saw a batch of already drunk fans who made a lot of noise in a pub/bar in the Hauptbahnhof. Leipzig supporters, because I believe they were going to play a cup final later that day. From an outside perspective, there seems to be a pretty big disparity within Germany when it comes to teams from former west/east Germany. West Germany was bigger, but in the top flight, it is definitely overly represented. Leipzig gives the former east Germany (which is still mostly economically weaker) a really consistently good team. But it’s all about the way RB rose to the top, right? And many people, including myself, don’t like that. 6:10 Lol I remember that statue… All these shots of Leipzig I’m seeing does bring back memories.
I can’t lie when I went to their game before the atmosphere was amazing for it. It did help it finished 8-2 with a hat trick of goals and assists in the same game
Really enjoyed the video, also subscribed. I think you should get a bigger microphone or a small one that's attached to your shirt. However these were some interesting and fun impressions! Cheers from Kiel

I live in Leipzig. It has so many older fans is that they are fed up with the fan culture of traditional teams. When they attend an RB game they get to see good (or even world class) football without having to inhale smoke from pyro or having to get out of a mass brawl. You can go to an RB game, bring your family, have a good time and a beer with your boys after. Other local clubs fans like BSG Chemie, Lok Leipzig, Halle FC, Dynamo Dresden etc. are overly politicized, violent and always causing trouble.
"Besides lacking tradition: RB has bought its way to the top with the money of the soft drink manufacturer. Maybe they've done a good job, the problem is just: Many of the people who do this good job are also poached from other clubs with money that they haven't earned through football, but money that the corporation has pumped in. Additionally, they've found as many loopholes as possible to comply with the DFL's statutes. You've already noticed the connection of "Rasenballsport" and the club's crest. Moreover, the "Verein", that have to own the "majority" of the club's shares, only allows a small handful of members, all with good connections to the corporation. By the way: "Ciao Ciao!" or "Tschau Tschau" is a common way to say "By!" in Germany. He didn't think you're Italiens.
If you go to a 3rd division game, for example the game Between Dresden and Cottbus, you have way more tradition and way louder fans than RB Leipzig will never accomplish!
its a different experience. they chant, sing, scream right wing paroles, make monkey sounds towards players of african descent, the teams can play 3 consecutive passes and on the other side you only have champions league football.
It's quite funny to see you walking without maps through Leipzig. Especially because I knew all the places you went :D Please make a video like this. Sounds great
Say that to Heidenheim, Augsburg and Mainz, who fought with passion in order to promote to a higher football tier and not by cheating like Hoffenheim for example.
You should've talked a bit about the history of football in East Germany. I don't think these fans are "glory hunters", they're just happy to finally have a club in the top division. For all the hate that Red Bull gets, it's nice to see them invest in East German football.
That's actually a good point... Looking for maps (available on Reddit) for the 3 top divisions of Germany, i can count 8 clubs on the East Germany site. Two of them are Herta Berlin and Union Berlin. It's true that RB Leipzig is "artificial" in a sense, but having a top flight for the people in Leipzig is a "win". I get the point for the german supporters to protest against it. It's a fair thing to do.
Not glory Hunters but happy to have a club in the first division. That is the definition of a glory hunter. They are not fans of a football club but customers of a marketing product and only care for the success and are happy to ignore the unfair advantages Red Bull has in comparison to other clubs in Germany.
@@the_l_generator1779 Nice job completely missing my point. It's about representation. Look at the state of East German football then compare it to what Red Bull has been able to give the region.
@@the_l_generator1779 Wrong, as @halnone said, you missed the point completely. That region had almost nothing. Then, one club started climbing. Climbing gathers supporters, fanbase. Ok, I agree that there's some marketing involved. But it's for the greater good, the existance of a club. If only old clubs deserve support, due to their supporters not being "glory hunting" (in your POV), nobody will create a new club anywhere...
@@nunocspinto They did not climb. They bought a starting place in the 5. division and than due to being a marketing product and circumventing 50+1 more then Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim etc. could spend huge and buy a squad that easily got to all division. I am sorry that East Germany has no clubs in higer division but Red Bull can never be accepted. And yeah nobody should just start a club. There are enough clubs with history in Germany so we do not need more marketing products.
The big problem with the game against Bochum was that the active fan community boycotted the game at the beginning because, according to their statements, there were many arbitrary stadium bans against some chaotic people. It was also extremely hot that day, which is why many people only stood in the shade and were not in their seats. If you really want to see a game in Leipzig, where there is more going on, you have to come against the big clubs or against Union Berlin (due to the location it is declared a derby). Many who go to RB don't care that they hate you so much because in Leipzig you can see that money is used sensibly and you don't spend millions on "finished" players. Rather, you buy young players, some of whom are unknown, and develop them further and simply play very nice football. Sorry for the bad English.

I agree with you that by the looks of it the environment was very much like MLS. That said, I would then suggest you return to Leipzig and see a game with Lokomotive. Compare the experiences
I like Lok and the old school ground looks amazing but the stands are way to far from the pitch and make a good atmosphere almost impossible. Chemie is the place to be for a good atmosphere in Leipzig.
Probably a no because of costs etc, but have you ever thought about coming to Australia to check the A-League at all? It’s in a really weird position where the fans at the game can be kinda hardcore about it, but it doesn’t translate to the league’s success. Could make for an interesting experience
The RB Salzburg logo you showed is the Ice hockey team... 😅 also Red Bull has the Munich Ice Hockey team who were going bankrupt before Red Bull stepped in.
Just to be correct: RB are or were not SSV Markranstädt. Red Bull just bought SSV Markranstädts starting rights in the 5. divison. There is still a club SSV Markranstädt playing in the 5. division again

Great summary 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Not comparable because these clubs are not an ad. They are more comparable to Leverkusen probably
As far as i know they weren't owned by the companies. Those we're more Like assigned sponsors
I'd love to see more Away Days at stadiums in the former GDR. Ellis at a Jena-Erfurt derby, anyone?
I think you don't get why RB is hated, it's not just because they are owned by a company. It is because the company has nothing to do with the city and just wanted to make a road to glory with a club. In the lower leagues they spend 10 times the money their competitors have been able to spend. They also asked Dynamo Dresden, Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1860 München and other clubs if they would be interested. They simply rebranded the whole club they bought. They just don't care about basic sport values
Always love seeing Ben the goat appear on a small channel for support
I highly recommend Gladbach. Went there last season, sat next to the away end which was also Bochum that day. Met a group of Germans lads, some of which were Bochum fans and ended up having a massive session with them in Cologne.
I was at Gladbach the night before this Leipzig match. It was the opener versus Bayer. It was indeed an incredible experience. The atmosphere was truly stunning.
So the reason you recommend Gladbach is because Bochum away lads and you drank in Cologne? Okay kind of random :D

Wouldn’t RB Salzburg be more hated considering they stole one of the biggest Austrian clubs to make the new club
That's what I understand
They are both hated
Salzburg took over austria salzburg. They would have gone bankrupt if they werent taken over by rb. But yeah they are unfortunetly hated in austria

And it’s RedBull still - they don’t have to try that much anyway…
On the other hand, the issue with the 50+1 rule and RB Staff making up most of the club‘s members is just horrific.
It's so emberassing, I love it 😂
Making fun of the most hated club for not having so many fans is kinda stupid.
The only time in the current season you could get tickets on the free market it was Köln - Braunschweig (after Braunschweig haven’t sold their allocated away tickets in full)
Which has been a rare sight for Köln since we were in lofty heights of Europa League and Coference League
Idk, Leeds comes a close second

"Tradition starts somewhere" - yeah lad. You're in Leipzig. The place the DFB was founded. You have Lok Leipzig who played in a European final. Chemie won two league titles in East Germany. You've got tradition on your doorstep
Unreal
RB could sell the Club anytime to Putin for a huge profit. Would be quite fitting in so many ways.

(I'm from Aue, not Leipzig, but sufficiently close I suppose)
Lok (VfB) and Chemie (Sachsen) Leipzig have tons of history between them. The First all german Champion in 1903, the East german rivalry, both relatively successful until East germany fell off. Both bancrupt a few times since.
An interresting picture of the interweaving club histories I found...
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC_Sachsen_Leipzig#/media/Datei:FC_Sachsen_Leipzig_grafische_Historie.png (blue Lok and green Chemie)
Bottom line is: they hate each other. With a passion. And no one in their right mind is going to touch any of them. And most important both seem to be okay with that.
So the best thing anyone could do was found a completely new club to rally around. (Well, Markranstädt... almost nobody knew or cared about before the takeover. It's still not the _right_ way to do it, but it was a way to get away with.)
Do i like the red bull way?
People hate failure. the energy drink club has played in the UCL or UEL since promotion. Also, won the DFB Pokal in the 21/22 and 22/23 seasons.
That’s the point though haha, I didn’t slate it either, I love MLS
except for the fact that USL teams are also franchises and their fan base is largely made up of people who support that team because it's the biggest in the area (as far as the USL championship is concerned)
All pro sports in the U.S. are pretty much franchises. USL run a franchise based league with requirements to be in certain leagues as well, which is why some are destined to be stuck in League One forever as they probably will never meet the requirements to move up to the Championship

Good point.
