    As a student I lived next to the old ground. It was magnificent. A sloping pitch and standing so close to the pitch that if a player took a throw in you could have easily taken the ball off them.
    The Kassam is OK - it just drains any atmosphere. Even a higher fence with a mural of a stand would be better than an open end. If you ever drive there and park in the car park where there are a load of spaces free, just beware. A poor shot at goal can easily fly into the car park and do damage!

      The one in the statue was still very much a bull! :D

    • @dex1lsp
      @dex1lsp 2 месяца назад +5

      In reality, it's both an ox AND a bull. The term "bull" can be applied to uncastrated males of various bovine species, and "ox" is not really a specific species either, but rather a term for any kind of bovine that has been domesticated as a draft animal.
      Overall, the majority of oxen are castrated, and are therefore not bulls (which does make the inclusion of the balls on the statue a bit odd and unnecessary). However, there are indeed some parts of the world where at least some of the oxen are bulls. This is not common overall because bulls are significantly more difficult to control due to their much higher testosterone levels, but it's not impossible, especially depending on the specific job.
      It's a bull-ox with bollocks!

    The Kassam seems to have acquired "character". My nominations for bad stadiums are from the 80s: Colchester United's ground at Layer Road had an away section enclosed with chicken wire; the ball regularly ended up in someone's back garden and parts of the terracing were fenced off for safety reasons. Northampton Town used to ground share with the county cricket club, and had open air urinals. This video was very entertaining; I think you should treat Nieve to a game at Dereham Town.

  • @addym45
    @addym45 2 месяца назад +2

    It stinks because of the sewage works next door. Also there used to be a pub just opposite called The Priory, Kassam evicted the tenants and then left it to rot despite it being a listed building.
    We pay a service charge that supposedly means the stadium will be upkept, but it's consistently dirty and the toilets are minging. There's no hot water and the reception is non existent.
    The sooner we leave this dump the better.

    Echoing the thoughts of the fans you spoke to Ellis, I don't dislike Grenoble Road, I hate it. The sheet metal sides, cold concrete, lack of much to make it feel like our home. It's Awful.
    I'm gutted I couldn't experience our old home The Manor Ground, it was a proper British stadium, had a slopped pitch and everything.
    To expand on what Nieve said about how cold it can get, from late October to mid April every season, standing in the East stand (the one behind the goal) is like arctic level freezing.
    If the inability to clear the pigeons weren't enough, until a few years ago, every penny from concourse sales went to Firoz as well as the Hollywood Bowl complex. It's believed when we eventually leave, the whole thing will get torn down and replaced with houses.
    I can't wait to leave Grenoble Road. But, cos the approval to build a new ground is taking a while, it looks like the solution will be to extend our license to play there until our new stadium is build.

    This was my local when it was built, I saw the very first match there against Palace. I was actually down the Palace end as a long time sufferer of Palace (before they became premier league quality). Palace lost on penalties.
    But I remember the ball going over the fence and hitting cars in the car park.
    The place has never felt nice and felt rundown from the very start.
    Also, rumours were that Kassam couldn't afford the 4th stand but built the entertainment complex to pay for it and have a longterm income. He managed the second one.
    The new ground about to be built will be far easier to get to as well.

    Taunton is dangerous for away fans, advertised capacity of 1,000 in the away end, safe capacity, about 600 at most. 3 Porta Potties for all the away fans, Pitch constantly Flooded, No proper food only pastries, no room before the pitch meaning fans are dangerously crammed in together, and meanwhile the home end gets way more room only to bring less fans than the away. Overall the Club is very nice but the Stadium is almost dangerous.

Never cleaned, no character, everything done on the cheap (hence why it’s so unbearably ugly), grim interior, and the weird gaps and 3 stands mean that atmosphere is very difficult to create inside the stadium. Even if our new stadium plans were fully accepted and construction started immediately, there’s no way it would be finished in time and ground sharing is inevitable. Various owners of the club have tried to buy the stadium from Kassam but he won’t budge. Not only do we not own the stadium, the club has to pay hundreds of thousands of pounds every season to play there. So yeah, not great.

    One small comment - you said that this is the "worst competition" for Oxford United, however it really can't be, seeing as they won it in 1986 - credit where it's due.
    The ground just looks unfinished, and badly so - the stands are so disconnected, at least Shrewsbury's look like they're on speaking terms. On a more serious note, the pigeon situation is a serious Health and Safety violation, that looks disgusting and really unhealthy.

      Under Kassam, the Merchant of Misery as he was know before he bought us, we went from Championship to National League in 7 years.

    Let’s not forget the fact it has an Indian/Nepalese buffet in the car park as well.

    It's an interesting and unique game day experience. A friend and I took a day trip to Oxford a few years back when we were traveling around the UK from Australia and went to an Oxford United game at this stadium.
    Public transport to the stadium was a bit sketchy, the fact there are no pubs around seemed strange to us. But the fans were fantastic during the match. I still remember a kid after the game getting all excited that my mate had an Adelaide United kit on haha.
    We enjoyed the experience, but it was 100% different to any other game we attended that trip up and down the pyramid.
    Though public transport to venues was a reoccurring issue to a lot of stadiums and grounds we went to in the UK.

      For a while there was a pub, next to the car park, called the Priory - and it was a great place, a proper friendly, traditional pub in a medieval building, an oasis of history and character in a desert of dull concrete-and-steel modernity - but, guess what, Kassam made sure it was impossible for the owner to make a living. It's now boarded up and neglected (despite being a Grade II* listed building). Kassam is a soulless money-grabbing creep.

    A fair review, the ground is stuck owned by a guy that doesn't care (you just have to look at the state of the hotels he runs to see that) and a club that wants to move forward - and moving forward means away from that ground. For the privilege of being able to play there (and besides the ticket office, the club are not allowed into the ground much otherwise - for example on a matchday on a 3pm kickoff, apart from pitch maintenance (and although we actually pay for that as part of our payments to Kassam, we actually provide our own staff and pay for machinery and upkeep so the pitch is acceptable) and ticket office club staff are not allowed in before 12pm) we are paying all told (rent and maintenance) around £1m/year, and with that we have no money making ability besides tickets and pitchside advertising. As another example of the club paying for things that should be fabric of the stadium, the new scoreboard (and indeed the previous scoreboard) were paid for by club owners not stadium. A final example of the stadium co not caring and wanting to save money - there is no hot water in the public parts of the stands, hand washing in the toilets is firmly cold water.
    The smell in the general area is from the nearby Thames Water treatment works - and there is another example of a company that doesn't care. When you say it smells s**t it really is.
    come 2026/2027 (fingers crossed) when we finally get a new stadium that is well designed, and well maintained, the club can finally truly move on. Hopefully Ellis is still making content then and returns for a revisit.

    Ellis, you should go to Gillingham. I was an ST holder there for 3 years for my sins. The Kassam looks positively luxurious by comparison. At least the Gills now have an owner who cares. Feel really sorry for the Oxford fans as they deserve more.
    If the club could buy the land and stadium from Firoz Kassam (who would never sell it, or put a extortionate price on it), there is real potential for it to be developed into a good stadium.

    I've seen worse. My hometown club, during a period when they won two titles and two cups, had tribunes made of concrete with hardly any seating. Fortunately, the new club owner, along with local authorities and government, funded new tribunes. So now we have beautiful new tribunes but miserable players.

  • @samyates790
    @samyates790 2 месяца назад

    The bad smell is cause there is a sewage works less than half a mile from the ground (at the fence end) it’s even worse on a hot day when the winds blowing towards the ground. Kassam brought the club for £1 and took on the debt as said in the video. Then he sold the site of the old ground which is now a hospital, the issue with him and all owners since is that he won’t sell the ground without the leisure park which obviously would cost a lot more than any owner would be willing to pay for a stadium. Only renting the ground causes all sorts of issues there’s been times before that club staff have been unable to get in in match days, the pictures on the stand behind the goal have only been there 6-7 years at most before then there was nothing connecting the ground to the club. The home fans hate it, away fans hate it, even the players complain cause it’s so hard to get atmosphere in there but there’s a new fan group set up with flags and banners before games which helps but we just want out and hope the council see sense and approve planning sooner rather than later as we could be homeless. COYY
