- For better or worse, Australian breakdancer, Raygun has taken the world by storm after her colourful and imaginative performance at the Paris Olympics on the weekend.
So how on Earth did we get here, and is she ok?

No, that is not the best they got, in a couple of weeks they will have in Australia the qualifiers for the Red Bull world championship and there you will see the actual best performers, many of them were misinformed about the Olympic qualifiers, many of the top competitors in Australia have denounced many irregularities with the qualifying process.
I mean Australia is hardly a place known for its vibrant urban dance culture. This is probably the best they had.

The IOC gave the organization of Olympic qualification in the nations own hands. In this case it fell into the hands of dancesport Australia which specify in ballroom, so they reached out to Rachel gun which they thought was an Expert in breaking. She adviced to partner up with the Australian breaking federation which surprise surprise is founded by Rachel Gunn and her husband and which has 20 members in total - they organized the qualification for australias entry team in breaking and surprise surprise again Rachel was chosen (her husband was one of the judges who made the call)
So yeah there most definitely were better option for the Olympic breaking team but the deliberately choose to send themselves.

As a former bboy who is now in his mid 40s and was dancing in the late 90s and early millenial, she is basically slightly past beginners level and no where near Olympic level to represent an entire nation.
His true thoughts slipped and he said around 5:10 "They should be focusing on the good talent, they should be focusing on those that actually won".
if it wasnt for her, i would never find out that break dance was an olimpic sport... You guys should thank her! she is a GENIUS!, break dance is gaining interes by the general public thanks to her!

it hasn't been removed. it was clear from the start that it wouldn't be featured in LA before the paris games began. HOWEVER. she probably put the nail in the coffin for later games.

You can tell that guy is trying really hard to talk around it, but when he says he wants the focus to be on the talented dancers and how good they are, the flip side is he's saying she's not.
Also, that guy is right that the meme footage isn't the true picture. If you look at longer footage, it's clear she simply lacks the technical ability (speed, flexibility, and strength) to do many of the moves.

If a country sent a swim team to the Olympics that couldn't swim they would be ridiculed. So, if you send a break dancer that can't break dance, expect the same treatment.
They make history. Lots of poor black countrys send a guy who can barely swim. This is not that though, aus is a first world country with actual half decent break dancers.

As a breaker 40 years in the game . If the entire judging panel doesn't consist of hard core old-school breaker as well as the commentators.. I agree pull out of the Olympics.
But no salute to the judges brought into Australia (at taxpayer expense no doubt) to judge the Oceania selection trial for the Olympics, and who selected Raygun out of a small talent pool of 20. They should have concluded that none of the contestants meet the minimum standard for Olympic competition. Go home.

Poor thing, though. You can tell from this video how upsetting this has been to her. Don't get me wrong--I'm all over the place laughing about her performance, and I've found my next Halloween costume idea already. I just hope she can see the humor that everyone else saw, take some time off with support from friends and family, and figure out how to use this to move forward in a positive and realistic direction. This might be bad for her academic career, but maybe she'll get her own TV show where she travels the world exploring how breaking evolved in different countries and using her Ph.D. to educate the world on its importance as an art form.

If u actually knew the dedication that these ppl go thru to be good enough to go to the Olympics for example Synchronize swimming or water dancing as u called it. Let's see if u could hold ur breathe under water as u lift ur team mate out of the water and still be in synch with everyone else and still have the musicality on top of that. The ones that actually have real talent have given up everything for that one passion I think is incredible. I think that an athlete is anyone who can put in the hardwork, time, and have to perform in ways most normal average person can't do is what makes a true sportsman. Also riding horses isn't just sitting on top of a horse. One has to have strong legs and core plus balance. U would know what it feels like after riding a horse for hours and how sore ur body feels afterwards.They also have to be able to have trust between the person and horse as well.
Breakdancing isnt a sport. Its borderline gymnastics. Its borderline double bars. In how it could be judged. But mostly, its just people spinning around on the ground and you have no idea how to judge it.

You can sugarcoat it and say I “did my best” but at the end of the day it’s professional sports and doing the best you can as a recreational level athlete is not good enough at Olympic level.

Its not fair for every better Australien breaker athlete in that sport. The Australian selection process has rubbed a real talent's chance to compete at the Olympics. Her performances would not even get respected in a street performance!

Not Because of her, breakdance is removed from Los Angeles 2028. Before Paris 2024 started, it was said that breakdancing will not be part of Los Angeles 2028, because of lack of fundings.
"Makes a mockery of her sport?" It should never be a sport at all, and it's supposed to be about fun and self-expression. I don't see it that way at all, this is reminiscent of Emmanuel Augustus unfairly losing a lot of boxing matches to decision because the judges basically all hated his signature unorthodox style, hated that he was always dancing around his opponents, and thought that he was generally "bad for the sport". So, what works for you might not work for everyone else, the things you like aren't the same things and the same standards everyone else holds.

I'm sure when the first expressionist painters evolved, the classics were in shock.... bring on the simplicity of iconic movements and simplicity. Why do we always need to want more rather than to want less for simplicity. It think it's refreshing in this debate to hear what people expect versus what is really interesting in its bare bones simplicity.
