    This recent direct was actually very unique compared to all the others IMO. There weren't really ANY bombshell announcements for a general audience -- no new Mario platformer, no Pokemon games, etc. Instead, ALMOST EVERY SINGLE GAME was a dream come true for a specific, niche audience completely removed from the mainstream.
    Metroid fans, Donkey Kong fans, MvC fans, Mario RPG fans, 2D Zelda fans, Sakaguchi/Uematsu fans, 2D animation fans, Dragon Quest fans, Ace Attorney fans, and general turn-based RPG fans are ALL relatively niche communities that were severely underserved for years, if not DECADES -- and all their dreams came true in a single presentation.
    I honestly thought it was a boring direct at first because I only cared about two of the games they showed, but when I realized how laser focused it was on pleasing millions of obscure, hardcore fans who were STARVING for attention, it made me a lot happier -- and it also explained why the internet at large loved this direct so much lol

    I think this Direct (& specifically this top 5) sums up the overall scope of the Switch.
    -Echoes of Wisdom demonstrates how various long time series like Mario and Zelda are still innovating and reinventing themselves.
    -Mario & Luigi illustrates how various formerly hibernated/dead franchises have been allowed to come back on the system and make a significant impact (with SMRPG remake being another notable one in the last year).
    _Marvel vs Capcom indicates the extent to which third parties have come back to Nintendo through the console, often not with necessarily cutting-edge AAA titles but long-time classics benefiting from the Switch's nature.
    -Metroid Prime 4 acts as the biggest evidence of the system fulfilling long time promises even with the wait of things like Tears of the Kingdom paying off both commercially and critically.
    And even DKC Returns HD, which was emblematic of one this generations bigger negatives (that certain series like Donkey Kong, F-Zero & StarFox have been underserved by the lack of real new games) also serves as a reminder that such IP's haven't been forgotten either with this game, F-Zero 99, & even Starlink at least giving them some spotlight.
    The whole presentation is a montage of how Nintendo was able to come back and how much higher they're clearly planning to go.

      I think, with next generation, we'll see more AAA 3rd party support. At least from Japan. Some leakers (reliable ones) already revealed Visions of Mana and all of Sega's upcoming games are Switch 2 bound.

    Tutorials are pretty much a Dream Team-exclusive issue, by the way; Paper Jam and the remakes do a sort of adaptive thing where they'll skip the tutorials if you're understanding the ideas in a section without a guide. Plus all those games also having cutscene speedup makes them even faster for the few that are mandatory.

      Considering all the talk about making sure the Switch Online services transition smoothly and stuff like that, I’ve had a hunch for a while that Nintendo’s big strategy to get people to adopt the Switch 2 is to just let the consoles coexist for a while and have the 2 clearly play the same games better.

    As far as the cadence of switch releases this gen, I don’t think people consider the fact that Nintendo used to develop games for multiple platforms in previous gens. They always had to split development between home consoles and handheld. Now they took that same infrastructure and can put all of their resources towards console releases so the output is hard to keep up with. Plus, they did benefit all gen from re-releasing nearly every notable Wii U game and having the public view them as “new games” since nobody owned a Wii U to experience them.

  • @nfugitt89
    @nfugitt89 8 дней назад +2

    I think what helps the amount of new games is that Nintendo has a slew of "second party" devs like Grezzo. They used to mostly do portable titles, but now since there's only one Nintendo device they can be used to prop up the lineup with attractive, new titles from popular series.
    Also MP4 is for sure a crossgen title like Twilight Princess and BOTW

    1860s gamer checking in again!
    I'm just now getting back into fighting games after being out of them for a couple scores. Literally the only reason I stopped was because arcades died. You would have absolutely _loved_ being of age in those days, can confirm. It was magical. (Also sometimes _dangerous_ if you liked throwing your opponents!)
    But yeah, now online play for them is actually _good_ now, making these days the next best thing! MvC Collection is a Day -1 for me.
    Also, _loving_ that custom 8bitdo stick job. ✨

    The moment we started the Direct w/ a brand new M&L game, I knew I was in for a treat. I enjoyed all the games in the series, but the last one I truly loved one of these was Dream Team back in 2013 (even with the admittedly poor pacing and tutorial spam, it didn’t bother me that much). Brothership looks so damn good, the wait to November is going to be painful but exciting. If it ends up on the same personal levels as Bowser’s Inside Story and Dream Team, then we are in for a treat

  • @AceTrainerX3
    @AceTrainerX3 8 дней назад +1

    Okay, I'll try to be brief...
    Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story was the *very first RPG I ever played;* on the *very first console I ever owned* (not including those Jakks Pacific plug & plays my parents showered me with in kindergarten). I was 8 when I first got it, so I sucked hard at it. But I kept coming back: over and over again, getting stuck further and further into the game as I got older and gradually more skillful. And then I proceeded to lose my copy around high school... Fast-forward to 2020, and I started college; for my 18th birthday I spent some money on a few DS games I had growing up. BIS was among those. And then I proceeded to beat the game in a mater of a few sidings.
    So with that said, it was the game that taught me how to love an RPG, and would help me lean into stuff like Pokémon once I found some friends who were into that series. While I did hope that I would get Dream Team when that was released, I never did; guess my parents never bothered to notice how hyper-fixated I was on BIS. But I did feel pretty bummed once Alpha Dream closed its doors several years back. (Then again, releasing a remake on the 3DS once the sun was being set on the system, and then yet another *more pointless* remake once it was practically midnight was probably not the greatest decision in video game company history)
    With that off my chest, I was definitely warm and just... happy when I saw that direct open with an announcement of a *new* game in the series. Whether it's being made by some former AD employees at Nintendo or a completely new set of devs, I'm definitely looking forward to it when it comes out. and I was sure it would be the absolute highlight of the direct once it was finished!
    ... And then Nintendo proceeded to include a little segment for a Marvel vs. Capcom collection, and that became my highlight instead; M&L and Prime 4 actually being shown off are still 2 and 3 for me. Oh yeah, and DKC Returns with 3DS content at full 60fps was a nice cherry on top for me!

I’ve finished my undergrad and started grad school, I’ve moved out of my parents’ house, I’ve gotten a regular job, and I’ve started coming out as trans. Nintendo World Championships LOOKS like a fun concept, especially for fans of speed/challenge runs. It's hard for me to get past the fact that Nintendo is Nintendo, and most if not all of this full-price game's gameplay is likely going to require you shell out for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. (Plus the usual fact that, like nearly all primarily online games nowadays, it'll likely be rendered unplayable whenever Nintendo decides the servers aren't worth the upkeep anymore.)

    Prime 4 is coming out sometime in 2025. The next console is going to be announced within FY2024. Watching the Direct I thought it was pretty clear that MP4 is probably aimed at being a launch title for the next system. Maybe a crossover title like how Breath of the Wild technically was, but like BotW, probably only just barely runs on the older hardware.

    The announcement that caught me SO off guard was Phantom Brave The Lost Hero. Not only did I not think that Phantom Brave would get a sequel. But the said sequel was announced in the direct. And while I'm not complaining about a new Phantom Brave cause I'm a sucker for NIS games, I WILL complain about the framerate, cause holy smokes, that framerate did not look pleasing on the switch in the slightest. Now I've gotta get my hands on the original game, whether for PS2, PC or Switch.

    @Furluge 6 дней назад +2

    Yeah, wow, that certainly was one crazy direct. I had a friend of mind pose the same question about "Is Prime 4 running on switch hardware". And, I just really don't get it. It looks good, but it doesn't look good because of particularly incredibly graphical hardware, it looks good because of art design and direction. The truth is that many many more games could look that good but to do that requires a colossal amount of effort and talent. You need people willing to do things manually, to paint things in by hand and not have the GPU generate it for you. All that sort of thing is hard. Throwing some bloom , raytracing, and autogenerated reflections and other effects is. I'd argue in a lot of the current issues we're reaching is where the amount of effort to make something great is so massive it's bordering on insane. That's why so many people are desperately hoping for AI tools to help relieve them of the grunt work, in a similar fashion to how Disney used CG to help with grunt work in backgrounds and such for their features. Once again just like so much of human history, human talent and labor is the bottleneck. :D
    Most of my gaming is on PC but really the hardware most games need these days has really flattened. And I've noticed a trend of people not really grasping just how much it has flattened. In fact it often seems like people are in denial about hardware development slowing down despite so many metrics and benchmarks pointing it out. For example, the old PC I built in 2012 has run everything I throw at it with no issues up until recently this past year. It did get occasional graphics card updates and some new hard drives but CPU, RAM, and everything else did not change. And the GPU updates stopped with a 1080 Ti which is now quite old. So how did this work out? Well, there's two big fronts, CPUs and GPUs.
    On the GPU front somethign that keeps getting overlooked is pretty much all the benchmarks show that by and large there was little benefit for expensive graphics cards over 1080p. Everyone was chasing 1440p and 2160p. To the point AMD and Nvidia invented frame generation and upscale technology to be able to display a 4k image. But add to this that 99.9 percent of people don't have a display big enough to get the full benefit of 2160p. This is not a new story. Back in the day when displays were going from 720p to 1080p lots of people didn't have a tv big enough for that either as TVs were often under 40". Well tech advanced and bigger TVs came down and we got benefits out of 1080p, but 2160p? If you sit about 10 feet from a 2160p display that display needs to be 108 inches in size to get the full benefit of it. That's a size of display that starts to get absurd to have in home. It's pretty much just the realm of projectors. And you can't just sit closer to a TV because you have viewing angles to consider as there is such a thing as sitting too close to a display. So just the way we view traditional screen naturally puts a cap on just how much resolution is beneficial and it appears to be roughly somewhere between the 1080p to the 1440p or so mark.
    And on the CPU end of things, if you look at CPUs for the past twenty years or so you may have noticed there is a trend of adding more cores, instruction sets, or extra features to these chips rather than adding more clock cycles. Current tech already is cramming about as much instructions as are physically possible without errors into current silicon. "Just giving it more horsepower" isn't really an option anymore. So chips are instead developing in parallel paths that make the chip work smarter or add more multitasking functions rather than just being stronger. And this is good and all, but simply put games don't need massive tons of multitasking processes. It helps, and there's definitely game ideas and types that benefit from more cores than others (dwarf fortress.) But most traditional games? Not so much.
    So if you combine these two trends you start to realize that unless you try to chase after a very high resolution you can actually get a lot of game performance with very little. That's why the Steam Deck works so well. And the Switch with it's Tegra X1 architecture is basically the same idea, it's just a lot earlier and not nearly as well actualized as AMD's solutions would come to be which have basically pushed Nvidia aout of the APU space. The APU space is interesting because these days a AMD APU with Radeon graphics built into it will do pretty much everything you want it to, and look good doing it. I was recently doing all my PC gaming on a Ryzen 6800U handheld and the only two games that made it struggle were Helldivers 2 and Star Citizen, two games that are known for not being well optimized. Nothing had any issues when I was running it. And to be honest I could have really done all my PC gaming on a Steam Deck if just accepted not playing anything extremely niche. That's pretty crazy when you think about it. This is why GPU prices are surging. Because Nvidia and AMD had realized that the market for these cards is slowly drying up as the forces to push people to buy these cards are dying down. So if you can't sell high volume, you have to sell at boutique prices.
    Now there certainly are things coming down the pipe that are going to need higher end hardware. Time isn't standing still. It's just those pushes are coming in the form of VR and AI. It's just not coming out of traditional gaming like it was in the day of old. At least for now until there's a big change in the industry.

    Nintendo really proved with this direct that they plan on letting the Switch outsell the PS2--And you know what, I'd be fine with the current Switch for another seven years. Everything they announced, proved once again, that the power of a console is irrelevant so long as you have the right talent to make the hardware shine.
    The fact that so many people believe Metroid Prime 4 couldn't be on the current console, is evidence to that fact. That new Mario and Luigi game, Metroid Prime 4 or even Remastered, Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4--I could go on for awhile--But these are in my opinion, some of the best looking games in the industry--That's not even discussing how they actually play.
    It really says something that the first PS5 game I actually intend on buying and playing nearly four years after getting the console, is Astro Bot, and it looks nothing like anything else in Sony's lineup.
    This had to have been my favorite Direct, there was a little something for everyone--And even if you're not a Metroid fan, _there had to be part of you that couldn't help but smile at the announcement._ C'mon, Prime 4 has been one of _those_ games that everyone, fan of the series or not, has been anticipating. Like Half Life 3, or Silksong. At this point, we've all been waiting to see these games for so long, we don't even care if we plan to play them or not! How could a Metroid Prime 4 "One More Thing" not be one of the most exciting ways to end an already great Direct?
    Great video as usual, I can't wait to see you critique MP4--I might be more excited for that than I am the game right now, if only because I still don't know if Prime 4 is actually real or not, and I haven't just been dreaming up these past couple days.
