    I was a station commander of that area for 8 years joydens wood is unique as it a large woodland surrounded on three sides by housing and motorway type road there are four cul-de-sac leading to it and only one fire access
    Due to
    a huge fire 30 fire engine in 1976 only trees are allowed to grow to thirty feet so it can never reoccur
    We were fighting the original fire for 10 days and the calls from the public exceeded 90 before mobile phones were available
    This is why the engines are in the street I was on the initial call and thought the world was on fire 🔥

      Clearly, a landmark event in your firefighting career. The incident that you describe may have been very difficult to deal with at the time, but once over, must give you a lasting sense of satisfaction when you reflect upon your past achievements.
      From your description of the location, I wondered how many of the residents, when viewing their house for the first time, would have looked at the lie of the land and considered, ‘What would happen if there was a fire?’

    I had no idea where in the UK this was until I did some research. Nice to see that some parts of Britain have normal houses with a yard and a 1-2 car garage. Curious to know why it's not "Kent Ambulance Service".

    • @ElliottRodgers
      @ElliottRodgers Год назад +3

      Some years back the county ambulances were merged into 11 NHS Trusts from 1996 onwards.
      As fire services have historixally had a big chunk of funding from local taxes ("Council tax") and there is legislation on fire service response times, stations per population, risks etc no mergers. Discussions have taken place on mergers in past but rhey went nowhere.
      Hope thia helps.

      If you exclude blocks of flats, pretty much every house in the UK has a garden ('yard'), front and back, and lots have garages attached or at the end of a drive.

      As others have said since about 2006 the number of UK NHS Ambulance Services have been vastly reduced . Northern Ireland has one service as do their police and fire . Scotland has had one ambulance service covering the whole country for years and in more recent years the 8 fire and police services have been merged to form Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire Service . Wales has one ambulance service and in England the ambulance services are Isle of Wight and London ( which are the only two that have been left covering one county each ) .Mergers started years ago such as between Norfolk , Suffolk and Cambs to form East Anglia , East and West Sussex were merged , Cheshire and Merseyside merged and Avon , Gloucs and Wilts merged . The final and current services ( apart from Isle of Wight and London ) are South East Coast which covers Kent , East and west Sussex , Surrey and part of North East Hants. East of England which covers Essex , Herts , Beds , Norfolk , Suffolk and Cambs .South West which covers , Cornwall , Isles of Scilly , Devon , Dorset , Gloucs , Wilts , Somerset and Bristol and a very small part of Oxfordshire . South Central which covers most of Hants , most of Oxfordshire and all of Berks and Bucks , North West which covers Greater Manchester , Merseyside , Lancs , Cumbria , Cheshire and a small parts of Derbyshire including Glossop , North East which covers Northumberland , Tyne and Wear , County Durham and the area formerly know as Cleveland . Yorkshire which covers North , West , South and East Yorks / North Humberside . West Midlands which covers West Mids county , Warks , Worcs , Herefordshire , Shropshire and Staffs and East Midlands which covers Notts , Leics , Northants , Rutland , Lincs ( including South Humberside ) and most of Derbyshire .

    If it had been in the US they'd have sent about 5 ladder engines and still been scratching their heads with no water being directed on the fire, half an hour later!! At least in the UK and Europe we do know how to fight fires!

    • @sugarbertie1143
      @sugarbertie1143 Год назад +3

      @@empirecook I haven't, but I did watch one with a car on fire in an open air carpark. The first engine to arrive was a ladder engine!! WTF? By the time a pump appliance arrived with water on board and they'd put on their gear and scratched their head looking for a fire hydrant, there were about 5 cars on fire. Also saw one with a house on fire and there was a fireman on the roof smashing a hole in the roof. What does fire need to burn? Oxygen ! Needless to say the house just about burnt down. Staggering incompetence for a so called professional service.

    • @pandaman3367
      @pandaman3367 Год назад +4

      For one, that's not all US fire services, in my town they send the pump appliance, or pumper as we call it, and 5-10 minutes later they start fire attack, spraying water on the flames, this is the same for a lot of fire services around the US, not just the ones you see on video (there's over 20,000 registered municipal, county and state fire services in the US)
      For two, ladder engines, or quints as we call them, carry anywhere from 300 to 700 gallons (1135-2650 liters) of water, they do start fire attack, but often look for a hydrant first to get water on the fire, either that or an engine pulls up to the scene and goes to secure a water supply for the quint.
      Third, "poking holes" ventilates the structure from smoke, sometimes you need it when the smoke is so dense you cannot see a thing while searching for dying victims stuck inside the home.
      Fourth, the American fire service is not incompetent, far from it, refer to my three reasons above, any questions, just ask them.

    • @pandaman3367
      @pandaman3367 Год назад +1

      Adding onto this, Quints are first response trucks in some some volunteer and paid services, they do this because quints are nearly all purpose
      Quints carry:
      1. Hoses
      2. Firefighting pumps
      3. Ground ladders
      4. An aerial ladder
      5. A water tank
