Your vid helped me take my PS3 apart, so I could replace the thermal paste, clock battery and grease the cd slider. Ready to go for many more years, cheers!
For Thermal Paste cleaning, my secret is wipe it dry first. Then using Contact Cleaner, clean the remaining residue. It always leaves a mirror finish to the dies and removes all traces from the heatsink.
little trick to remove that sticker residue. hit it with some WD40, let is soak and move it around a little. then wipe it away and then clean off the WD40 with some rubbing alcohol.
Thank you! This helped so much. Im not familiar with ps3 mechanics at all and unintentionally unscrewed the part that has the gears and winding mechanism for the sliding disc tray and eject button. It all came falling apart and I was worried i broke it. After watching your video (and watching the same part over and over haha), I got it back together and working. Thank you again!
I got my hands on a Super Slim recently, that came with two very filthy controllers. I gave those a bath and cleaned them up nicely and I used your guide to dust off the console as well. I was expecting the worst, but upon removing the top cover I actually did find a pretty tidy PS3. :) Thanks for the video! 👍
Try some goo-gone for that bottom residue left by the sticker. Works well for me, let it sit on it for a few minutes and it will be easier to wipe it off after. My fav part about this video is how you detail clearly each screw removal. Often times in these tear down videos you can’t tell what types of screws come out of where and when trying to use these videos to match the screws back up during assembly this is helpful. Thanks!
I’ll give goo-gone a go! And thank you! It’s definitely tricky to show each piece and screw coming out without the video dragging on too much, but I try my best!
Ahhhh sorry I can’t make another video on just the gears. Just take your time with it, and see if there are other videos out there if need me. You can fix it!
WD40 gets rid of glue from stickers. Soak the sticker and residue with WD40. On smooth surface, use razor blade (plastic or metal) to scrape it off. On a plastic textured surface, use a scrub brush. Then to get the oil off after, use dish soap and water, and then finally alcohol.
Wd40 has worked well for me in the past to get sticky residue off consoles from old stickers. I spray it on and let it soak for a few minutes and then try and rub it off even with ur finger nail and once u get it all off then just clean it off with sum IPA
No! That's a bare die, like in a laptop, you used way too much thermal paste. If it's not an IHS (integrated heat spreader), you only need a tiny bit to cover that small surface area (the area is the square of the length)
Just followed your video and managed to replace the thermal paste very successfully now it does not sound like a pack of angry bees anymore on start up
I recently found my old ps3 superslim. It still works but it gets hot very quick and im worried it might overheat if i use it for long periods so this vid can hopefully help me
I love how this guide tell you to hold tension on the spring and then to finger it out afterwards... Like there is 0 clear explanation or full video how to fully put back the slide assembly after the stupid jump cuts..
100% isopropyl alcohol is always recommended, however if you use a smaller percentage, just ensure that it dries completely before putting it all back together
Mine kept powering down randomly without warning or messages. Tried to take apart to see if it's dust...screws were impossible to remove, used a pair of pliers. It came apart, in a few pieces, no dust inside, i guess it was the mo0therboard...in the trash it goes lol.
PS3’s are prone to cold solder joints that can cause power issues like not turning on, or power cycling, so maybe that’s the issue? It’s more common on ps3 fats but still. I’ve fixed one before by simply using a heat gun over the processor chips for a while, then allowing to cool and reassemble. Could be something to try if it hasn’t already made its way to the bin haha
@@TheBygoneEra No idea, it worked fine, i didn't use it for about a year, and then this happened. The inside was clean as can be, no burn marks anywhere, no dust at all, solder looked pristine all over the motherboard and power supply. Bought a slim for 30$, working great so far!
I had that exact same colour ps3 super slim in 2019 (I actually thought this might of been my one I doubt it) and I threw it away on accident it was really filthy 😥
Thanks for watching! It’s not as daunting as it seems, just as long as you take your time with it. If yours is overheating I’d say it needs a clean, and probably new thermal paste
i just got ps3they its for parts its works fine it didn't have no hard drive i put in 320gb it good enough and no joystick it don't mater i have few joysticks. that's reason i got super slim just for games i bought online. my ps3 slim i molded it i want go online with it. i don't want to get banded
I’ve got to be honest, I’m not 100% sure if it requires a specific type of paste. The paste I used I think is intended for pc’s but it’s done the job and the PS3 is still working great
Question. I stupidly lost that metal plate thingy on 4:47, whats it called? And is it Necessary for the drive to have it to be functioning? I want to find replacement for it
I’m not sure what the name of it is unfortunately, however I imagine the console should still function without it. I’m sure it’d be a hard piece to track down without buying a whole console
@@TheBygoneEra just test it, the drive still works well without it. Still i would prefer something factory intact rather than having a missing a piece 😅. Watched this tutorial after i tried to fix my nephews ps3 myself and made that mistake. Thank you for the clear video!
I tried cleaning and my ps3 for the first time using this guide and I got to the part were I'm about to lift off the top but I saw the yellow sticker about the radiation to lasers and freaked me out. Just wanted to k on if its safe to open the ps3 or did they mean don't look at it while it's on? Sorry I'm not so tech savvy
great vid man my super slim ps3 model cech 4221c needs hdmi ic chip do you know what the chip code should i get for replacement or i just use a ps3 slim chip 👍❤️
I just got similar ps3 that was also very FILTHY, like it was stuck under a bed for years, dog hair and years of other crud and cigarette smoke smell baked into it. I might have to do this because that smell is nauseating whenever i turn it on I also have to add: some parts you move WAY too fast, especially the gears part, that is the absolute worst of the whole process
How so? It’s often hard to make a disassembly video that covers everything but also isn’t an hour long, because no one would watch that. Ultimately due to this, some things get cut, however the things that get cut are usually very self explanatory things. So what did I miss?
Your video is actually one of the better ones I've seen. It just make me laugh that in nearly all videos, everyone cuts the part where the bottom shield plate is removed. This part should be talked about more, as so many people have damaged the RSX and several other chips in attempting to remove it.
Great job! So nice to see these old consoles freshened up
Thank you!
It’s like watching a neglected child finally get the attention he deserves
It’s so satisfying

This is the first video I've seen where you take off the plastic trim properly instead of just yanking it off and breaking all the tabs. Nice job.
Haha thank you!
Very nice video.
That Bracket that you said was "probably not used", actually holds your HDD in.
That was my thought too but the bracket is on one side and the hard drive is on the other
I believe it’s for the vertical stand.

A little car wax brings back the shine for the front back panels
Re the sticker glue.
Try lighter fluid and tissue.
Sometimes the glue discolours the plastic.

That bracket you thought was unused is for the vertical stand it’s where you screw the stand on to the system.

Too much paste is as bad as too little. I recommend applying a small dab in the corner and spreading it carefully with a razor or an index card.
How did you get a blue one I have a red ps3
Facebook marketplace! The red ones are cool too!
Bought a lot of 8 PS2 Slims for $80 AU (all work perfectly) 😀😀😀

Olive oil on the sticky residue then isopropyl to get the oil off. I promise you it will work
