- I love it when watch manufacturers bring back some of the past watches from the 1960's
This Nivada Grenchen demonstrates exactly how it should be done, almost a 1:1 reissue, there is so much to like from this timepiece

Never heard of this brand that’s what I like so much about this channel I learn about new (old) brands and see so many watches off of the beaten path. Great video with great quality!
Since the release of this watch it has been on my short list of chronographs. But one thing I don't think I've seen is how well the printing is on the dial. It just looks spectacular! Thanks for showing this watch!
Great looking dial,I like that everything is embossed
I absolutely love these watches, totally agree with the comments on styling etc.
They are near the top of a list of watches I really want!! If only I had the money to buy them all!!!🤣🤣
I was looking for a chronograph in the $2k US price range and considered this watch. But given the thickness, I went with the Longines Avigation Big Eye. More important than thickness though was the movement tech - the Longines features a vertical clutch and column wheel. And after a healthy discount from an AD, I got it for the same price as this Nivada. Thinner, better movement tech, and brand with a stronger legacy. It’s not an apples-to-apples comparison since this is a diving chrono, but dollar for dollar, the Longines gets my money (literally).
Nothing wrong with that Longines, excellent pickup 👍
Very well put Andrew! And congrats on that beautiful big eye.
Hope you have better luck than I have with my Longines. Bought a Spirit Chronograph 11 weeks back. It’s been returned to the AD and is now with Longines and has now been away for a month! I have simply requested a replacement as it was a new watch and am waiting to hear from the AD/Longines.
@@steelsteez6118 Oddly Nivada have a Chronomaster "Big Eye" as well running on a Valjoux 23 calibre with a watch thick ness of 12.65mm
“You get to look at your watch again” … now THAT’S what I call a “negative”! 😄👍🏻
Thanks for sharing this nice discovery.
They have a good number of color variants. Got to check them out at a Worn & Wound Wind-Up in SF recently. I like the brown dial variant. Overall, pretty great value and proof you can get a proper mechanical chronograph into a pretty compact form factor and it still looks great and well proportioned.
Ok so I just found this channel and I literally love the intro very vibe-y 😅🎶🎵
Watching on my roku and a 4k monitor. Makes the macros stunning! Another good one Peter.
It’s all in the details 👍
I suppose you meant Objective, not Subjective. I agree it’s always hard to stay objective when the watch is as beautiful as this one.
Absolutely 😊
Beautiful watch. Absolutely love it.
Thank you for the review.
Thanks for watching!
Makes me want to start a watch RUclips channel just so that I can get one of these from Nivada Grenchen :D
Edit: Not to undermine the work you do. Just love the watch so much that can't think of any other less-expensive way to get my hands on it :D
Love this watch, brand, dimensions, & review!
Almost bought my mates vintage version last year then was sidetracked by the new models🤣
This brand is on my list.
Cheers PK
Its got so much appeal you can go wrong
cheers
this is the one watch I have always wanted to own but have not, it may be the best designed watch of all time I TRULY love that watch
Been eyeing this off for months now. Maybe next year. I also like their Super Antartica remake.
Looks fantastic Peter! Great review as well
Thanks Dale, feels rock solid on and off the wrist
That's a great looking watch. Plus it's a chronograph and a diver so it's the best of both worlds. Nice video, sir.
Couldn't agree more
Cheers Scott
Frankly though 95% of buyers will never use either function.
I love your watch reviews, Peter, and your enthusiasm and balanced reflections are always appreciated. So my comment isn't about your content but about the elephant in the room.
It is a powerful psychological principle that if you give someone something, the recipient will always feel compelled to return the favour. This is what is referred to as 'The Law of Reciprocity' and it is why manufacturers do it. My interest is always higher, then, when manufacturers don't go down that route because it communicates far more confidence in their product and it heightens their appeal.
I hear you David and have considered that, however there are so many watches that I get given to me and its very rare for one to tick all these emotional boxes for me.
If you have a scroll through some of my videos you will see very neutral reviews with free watches and some a little ehhh, and some that I really bond with 👍
Thanks for pointing that out, very true in many cases of course
cheers
@@PeterKotsa Excellent and very balanced response, Peter. Thank you for taking the time to reply.
@@davidlake2137 Thanks for watching David, appreciated mate 👍
Excellent photography 💯
Thanks
Hi Pete I only found out about this watch company a few weeks ago, seen a review on another channel on one of there dive watches they seem like really well built watches definitely one two think about in the future 😁 great video as always buddy keep them coming 😎👍
cheers
Amazing video as usual. I had never heard of the brand and your video definitely inspired me to investigate further. Upon going to the Nivada official website I saw another watch, the Super Antarctica, that I immediately fell for. After much deliberation I ordered one. I'm looking forward to this one. Thanks for the inspiration.
👍
I have one fantastic watch the Super Antarctic - the only issue is the crown is small! The updated versions will have a large crown! However those with smaller crown there is talk you could (for a small fee) get the larger crown. If your watch hasn't been sent out to you yet perhaps try and talk to them about a larger crown - which I tell you is so worth doing.
@@theshadow1812 mine got delivered last week. And yes the crown, while proportional to the case is really tiny. Hard to screw back in, though it looks fine. I may investigate having it switched.
Not a brand I am familiar with. Looks great, no way is it too tall, most modern Chronograph’s are unless they have an in house movement and cost 2/3 times more! Fantastic watch!
Great brand, had a vintage Antarctic and passed it on to my nephew. Have the manual-wind version of this one, black dial. Not too thick, wears well. Excellent 1-to-1 remake of the original, highly recommend. Thanks Peter. 👍⌚️⏱️
I've been thinking about this piece for quite awhile! The chocolate dial version is really delicious lol
Its called the Tropic dial!
Absolutely agree about the watch Pete, it's gorgeous. Don't know where to begin, be it the crystal, the handset or the case shape. Given the movement the case doesn't actually looks to thick, there are much bulkier Valjoux (or Valjoux based) powered watches out there. Depending on the angle the crystal distortion even seems to magnify the tachymeter scale.
It does indeed magnify the tachymeter scale 👍
Nice piece
Good review for a great watch
Morning Peter. It's OBJECTIVE not subjective :)
Yep, got that..😊
I've eyed this particular model for some time. However, comany name history & longevity aside, I cannot equate it's virtues with it's price.
Simply put, I find that my US$499.00 Lorier Gemini is ssooo similar that I am happy to keep it. It's true that it's a manual wind ST19 with a Hesolite glass, but the design language is just as retro & remarkably familiar both in size & form. Great conent Peter & I understand entirely your love of that watch. Keep them coming brother.
Absolutely bang on....I like the Loriers and bought the same as yours for my son....he loves it and it's a fair price too.
Cheers Peter, remember this hobby is about the watches that resonate and make us happy, nothing wrong with the Lorier Gemini, or whatever watch for that matter.
The key is personal satisfaction 👍
I like the double scale in the bezel.
I like the look of these a lot. I'm glad you pointed out the thickness doesn't have to be a deal breaker, as so many can caught up with stats - and the domed crystal adds a few mil but also adds huge character to what would otherwise be a 13mm watch which is fairly par. Like you, I have issue with the cost. Depending on where you source them, this could be Hamilton Intramatic chronograph money. I like these both but the Hamilton would edge it IMHO. If I had the money I'd get both, if I didn't this might miss out unless it were $300 - 400 dollars less. Great review as ever!
👍
A 2 grand watch should not have a ghost position. Which points to the fact they should use an above average movement. The Selitta is just ok, but not for a 2 grand watch.
All pushers should be screw down for water resistance. Use the claimed 100m and accidently push a non-screw psuher and you might have water damage.
The bezel should be with clicks. If done right it shows of workman ship and it is safe against accidental turning.
It should be at least 1-2 mm slimmer in height in both auto and handwound versions. That would be necessary to make it a true daily watch. You cant really wear a thick watch under a shirt with grace.
A beauty!
It's a beauty, can't believe you keep getting freebies like this, lucky you !! Mind you you've earned it. Shame they don't do it in a 42mm version, as it's too small for me. I can just about get away with my 40mm seiko sla043 , but 38.5mm is too small for me . I think it's a lovely design as chronos go. Great review as usual Peter. Since I've got my seiko sla043, I'm finding it hard to lust after many watches as I love the design of the seiko. Yema have brought out some nice chronos lately that are similar to this model . Mind you they are about 2.5k so not exactly cheap , although you can get quartz versions that are affordable. I love all the vintage designs of the 60s/70s , and the fact that manufacturers are releasing old models with improvements in quality materials , is a win win for me. Great vid as always Peter.
I agree with you Martin, the SLA has spoilt as well and I am finding it very hard to find watches that are its equal, emotionally and its beauty 👍👍
@@PeterKotsa yeah I still love my 051 , but the quality on the sla is just mesmerising.. It's an expensive watch for a seiko, but it's actually a steal when you compare it to the competition. I honestly don't think you can buy a better diver , that is as beautiful as this watch. The glashutte sea q is gorgeous too, but it's 10k. I have the chance to buy a sla017, now, for 4k, but I prefer the 043 now, and mine only cost me just over 2k .
The fact that there's only 1700 made worldwide , means it will be a rare watch , 300 less than the original 017. Unless seiko come out and make more versions of this , this watch could go on to be a great investment. Not that I'd ever sell mine, it's such a cool piece. I was cleaning the back the other day and realised that the zaratsui polishing was basically a mirror finish. I could see myself clearly in the back of my watch , and I hadn't noticed this before. Unlike fine wine, I don't improve with age , but it does show the effort that seiko did make, producing this masterpiece.
@@martinharrison4245 stick with the 043, its superb and you got it for a STEAL
@@PeterKotsa got mine really cheap, but the original straps had been replaced with uncle seikos. I can find replacements but would cost me another £400, nearly. I'm not a lover of the original straps anyway, and have purchased a few nice ones to improve it. This watch is a strap monster , so it's easy to sort it. To be honest , it would of been nice to have a bracelet with it , as it all adds to the look.
Great looking watch and a more realistically attainable alternative to a Daytona
Beautiful watch Peter! Love that box sapphire crystal. And I'm a sucker for the mesh bracelet. What brand is it Pete? Did it come with the watch or is that yours? Anyway, loved the video and of course the superb watch!
Mesh is just an aftermarket, I had it lying around so put it on..looks superb on it 👍
I really thought it was more expensive. I was surprised 😮
Sweet watch I scene it in there website for about $1,788.
I must say this really floats my boat, like the Aquastar tho, its pricey
This watch is not for me, nor am I for it. Mutual feelings!!!
Be well bro Peter 😀
You too Leonidas 👍
The tach scale is easily distorted. You have look it square. Though it's a beautiful watch, I like it
Looks good, but my concerns are with the thickness and the aluminium bezel (which i expected to be ceramic at this price point)
Aluminum is far better than ceramic, and one of the true hallmarks of a watch that's actually meant to be used. Put ceramic on a watch, and not only does the price go up, but the only guys who are going to care about buying them are the cowards who are so afraid of scratches that they're actually going to forget to live their lives. Be a man. Buy aluminum.
And it’s out of stock (manual version) although some other colour variants are available 😀
Wonderfull😍
Would love to see you review the CW Aquitaine!
I just saw this brand the other day and had no idea what I was looking at...
If the original has 200m water resistance the new one should also
I mean if they could do it back in the day they certainly can do it with ease today
Great looking watch, but it's a bit too thick for my liking. Wish they could trim down the thickness, but it's a brilliant looking watch.
Great review pete. I’m sure you’re reeling the loss of mr kambosos against haney . Not to worry though we still have watches
Haha, watches definitely bring me more joy than punching each others lights out 😊😂
@@PeterKotsa amen brother. Keep up the good work Pete
Toolish yet looking great overall.
Does the tachometer scale distorted and difficult to read due to the dome crystal?
The scale is almost hidden at the edge of the crystal
A slight turn of the wrist and it appears and its super legible.
Being hidden at the edge it has the effect of unflattering the dial and then when you need it, its there..
Really impressed with he layout and use of space here, especially for a smaller watch
Just wondering if Chrono 24 is a trusted place to buy watches? I'm looking at a Seiko spb 143 from Japan. I've never bought a watch from overseas & I've never spent $1000 plus over the internet. I've been saving for a while & I really love how the Seiko looks.
If you buy from a professional dealer on chrono24 you should be fine
If it’s a private seller there’s no obligation to get a refund or return a watch
Peter. What you think of the Yema Speedgraf? So much similarity dont you think??
Yes quite similar, albeit I have not handled the Yema in the steel yet
Cheers
The sub dials look small in proportion to the dial. I get that to keep the watch at 38 mm they needed to do that. I much prefer the Hamilton Intramatic Chronograph over this
This or the Longines Weems Chronograph if you could only choose one?
Ooooh tuff question and a good one at that.
I gotta say the Nivada has really bonded with me and I cannot see myself parting with it any time soon
Extremely versatile and excellent look
That said, the longings offers much easier legibility and readability as a watch, but I still think the NG is cooler 😊
@@PeterKotsa awesome, thanks for your reply! Might just have to pick one up.
Never heard a watch called delicious before, but hey I'll let it slide 🤣 what a looker though
Hahaha
What is the red strap you used on it?
Tropic strap, you can get them anywhere, this one was from Aliexpress
cheers
I wish my Super Antarctic had that particular crown. Too hard to manipulate on the Super Antarctic.
My black dial version (handwond) does NOT have a screw down crown. Oh, oh.
The hand wound version doesn’t have a screw down crown for a reason
Your winding it every second day so a screw down crown doesn’t make sense, you would damage the threads with that much usage
Cheers
@@PeterKotsa Thanks.
0:49 **objective** 😊
What sort of conference where people commented on your watch?
Must have been a watch lover’s conference. Usually no one notices watches.
I was at a work meeting with other professionals in their respective fields and also at a 40th Birthday last weekend.
The only thing that's puzzling me is "aviator sea diver". What does that mean???
This was a watch designed for many purposes back in the day. As a pilots chronograph and back then it also had 200m water resistance
If you "love" this watch so much, you would have to be literally blown away by Tudor Black Bay Chrono Panda. It dominates this one in every single aspect. I know the Tudor is not that easily available and cheap....and also Tudor doesn't do affiliate marketing...
I was at the Tudor AD twice in the last few months and had the opportunity to buy the chrono and said no both times
Beautiful looking watch, wears like a brick on my wrist unfortunately, so I let the opportunity go
You mean, "this is what a proper reissue looks like when it is sold out."
??
I just checked their website, it shows ‘in stock’
I would love too if I got it for free.
I can forgive thicc watches with a small diameter
Did you mean, trying to stay ‘objective’?
yep
Too small. I find with my 39mm that the dial is beautiful but I want to see more of the beauty. 41mm is a better minimum size when you’ve got a big bezel.
Yeah legibility does suffer being a smaller dial, however the romance of having someone almost 1:1 is just superb
3:18 15 thousandths of what?
??
15 mm (millimiteres)
im sure they do a better job than dan henry
This is over a 1000$ more than Dan Henry…
