    With the second AWD system described, why are there two dog clutches? This seems redundant as one ought to be sufficient whether to turn the axle.

    Good presentation.....allow me a quick question.....so the ( partial AWD system like on Sienna) system is basically always in front-wheel-drive mode and the extra-2 back wheels kick in when needed....OK. Is there a common problem we can check for, if the dash warning comes on? Reason for asking....my son-in-law has this car and the dashboard warning came on, on his 2016 Sienna.... about an AWD problem ( one warning says "Traction Control Off",....the other is "Check AWD system"...and the CEL light came on, too). Is there a "typical" , first-round check that we can do, that may find the cause? Car was never towed .

      The new hybrid Sienna uses the same system as the Highlander Hybrid. The previous generation V6 AWD Sienna likely used the same system as the lower trim Highlander AWD systems (no torque vectoring).

    I got a 3.5 inch lifted Toyota Sienna XLE AWD. AWD systems are still inferior to Grandpa's old 1940s 4wd solid front and rear axles with shifters and hub locks. Just cant improve much on hard metal gears, axles, and transfer case perfection from Dana 60s and New Process...and equally important.....ground clearance for off road. Or overlanding. These high tech lady systems just do the driving for the soccer moms and suits heading to the office.

      I'd be fine going with your take if I hadn't driven all these cars and shot video of me driving in the snow. Yes, any car can get stuck in some situations but overall, Toyota's AWD makes driving in varied conditions safer and more reliable (from my experience).
      The thing is, especially if you live in a region with snow is, what tires do you have? That's a big deal that most people ignore.

      I have a 2013 Sienna AWD. I got stuck this winter and the AWD didn't engage to get me out. Finally had to chain up the fronts with diamond chains and pulled right out. The only time I see it working is when you're starting out on dry pavement and you're turning (like pulling into traffic). The rear axle kicks in and you're good. I was hoping to learn more about the Sienna system here, but it was omitted from the discussion.

    did you ask any of the Toyota people why they are ignoring BEVs when it has been obvious for years that EVs are the future?

      @KaceyGreen 4 года назад +1

      ^ This!

    • @WhatdrivesUs
      @WhatdrivesUs  4 года назад +5

      Yes, I did (russell here).
      And it won't surprise anyone to hear that they are not interested in leading in this product category and are waiting to make a profitable car they think will sell in large quantities.
      I get it's not the answer we want but it's also legitimate from their perspective. I'm not saying anyone has to agree with this but you have to respect it as an answer.
      I have again, this last week, expressed the idea that, like during the time of the Prius, they could help lead this change over to BEVs but they resist that while acknowledging yes, during hybrids they were a leader. Toyota feels they are doing their part in partially electrifying their fleet so more people can drive more cleanly with their vehicles and, they have a point here.
      This position of theirs on EVs is entirely consistent with the way they have viewed them for as long as I have been in this field.
      I am obviously paraphrasing. I have no intentions to put words in Toyota's mouth.
      Personally, I think there are three reasons people harp on Toyota about electrification.
      1-They're the largest
      2-They led with hybrid Prius
      3-(and maybe this one is just me) I think people really want a company with the reputation Toyota for reliability and affordability to build a BEV

      Russell, thanks for the great video. Really explained the systems well.
      It seems to me that Toyota has been developing all the BEV pieces -electric accessories, batteries, AWD systems, - on the hybrids. When it is time to release a BEV, they will have all the engineering in place, just add more battery.
      The Prius Plugin gets like 75 to 100 mpg in typical use. In terms of gas use, compared to an ICE, it's practically a BEV.
