Still using my win 2 with the 3rd cooling mod regularly and I've been wanting this for so long. I cannot wait to get it.
Almost cancelled my IGG order because of your previous review.
I'm glad i stuck it out and GPD came through
I wasn't very worried but I'm glad they fixed the issues! Your happiness is infectious
I can’t wait 😭 got my unit through droix so patiently waiting for that shipping notification
Same brother, Dec 14, feels like a lifetime from now
That's awesome! Thank you for sharing, as always! :D
Happy GPD Win Mini day!! Hoping mine ships tonight!
Wow, I was waiting for this update! If you plan to make comparison of battery life between say old steamdeck and new win mini, would be awesome, I'm very curious how much battery life I can expect on a lower TDP settings for older games like New Vegas or say Dishonored or Human Revolution with it.
Phawx, you're awesome. Your videos get me so pumped to be a nerd.
You can clearly see how genuinely happy the Phawx is! I'm glad I stuck to my IGG order.
Yeah I was very worried when watching his first video on the mini but like you after watching this follow up video I'm happy I didn't cancel my IGG order too.
Glad I kept my preorder, great update!
Mine's on the way. I ordered the grips because I have long thumbs (compared to most handheld reviewers I see on youtube) and figured it's best to get them just in case I need that extra distance. The GPD Win 3 to me is not comfortable to hold, but the silicone grip case helps somewhat. If I do end up needing to use the grips on the Win Mini, I'll carry a purse or something if it won't fit in an inner jacket pocket.
The Mini has such strong WIN 2 vibes. Can´t wait to start modding!
Still have my bricked win 2. Barely was able to enjoy it
Yeeesss Phawx!!! This is exactly what i wanted to ear.. Cheers from Roma!!!👋
THIS is your king!? Just kidding - this thing seems awesome. Grabbing a coffee and a snack. Let's go.
Once you get it, you'll understand.
Ikr? I waited 3 months and I have so many questions. E.g. fan noise?
have spent 3 days with my 2024 win mini and I couldn't be happier. incredible. everything I wanted
I have the GPD win4, and it's been great
just got my unit, it's awesome! looking for a tutorial for how to tweak it to get the most out of it
What a fantastic machine. Getting ready to retire a 12 year old Vaio, that's been serving me exceptionally well, and looking around at what's out there. I loved the 1st gen GPD models, where you could have an old serial port, which is extremely useful to me, for controlling retro gear from the DOS era, old CNC machines, programming Dell switches etc. To have a serial on a modern pocket computer was great, and here... I guess a USB adapter will do. To have something like this for updating robotic firmware in the field - priceless. I don't even care about gaming. As a technician utility laptop, this is on par with EEE's when those came out. In Windows XP days, those were an IT guru's dream. I had mine loaded to the brim with diagnostic utilities, and Wifi signal testers. For my next laptop, I'll probably go with GPD Win Mini, and it will hopefully serve me for another decade.
I'm liking this a lot, but I did get a Win Max 2 that I still like a lot as well.
I'll probably sit this one out, but maybe next iteration or the one after, I'll be on board.
That's the one problem about making them so good, you kinda don't need to update them for a bit. I loved my Win 2, but it was too problematic that I bailed on it for the original GPD Win Max, which was excellent for the time. The Max 2 was just above and beyond, so much so I use it for everything today.
when do you think the next iteration will come out?
i mean the max2 and mini are very different purposes. The max 2 to me is closer to an ultralight then it is a handheld
@@ctrl_x1770 they've got a pattern of every year releases at this point. I think next year they'll refresh the APU on the Mini, then the year after that they come out with some new model.
I think the Mini is going to be a major hit for them. The following year, they'll either revise it, come out with something completely different, or make a Max 3 or GPD Win 5. Who knows at this point.
As far as computing power goes, I'm fine with the 6800u for now. It's very capable, covers all the games I want to play, does all the emulation I want, and does a fine job with productivity and even virtualization.
The next one I get, whatever it is, will be my dockable desktop replacement device.
@@creaturecore13 maybe, but for me I use them the same way, a mobile gaming and productivity device. I would love the Mini, and if I had the desire to migrate, I would use it as a 1 to 1 replacement for the Max 2. I almost did because I want to get my kid something to game on for Christmas. The thing that made me decide against it for now is mostly cost (I'd need a new 2230 since it doesn't do 2280, driving up the price for me into about $1,200), not wanting to migrate because of laziness, and finding machines that meet his needs for $500-$700. He's still a little bkid and I think a GPD may be a bit much to trust him with.
I think I'll do a hand-me-down when I upgrade in 2 to 3 years though. Hell be older and I'll be looking for more power for sure.
I have the max 2 and plan on getting this one, I love everything about the Max 2 but playing games on it. the only comfy way to do it for me is laying down in bed with the keyboard on my standing up right on my stomach screen straightened all the way out. The steam deck has a nice size screen and i'm glad the mini is the same
got mine a few days ago and loving it, what a wonderful little pc, such a nice screen , the only annoyance is the fan pitch and the only regret is not getting the 7840 version
I am most curious to learn about the fan noise and whether it can be mitigated by lowering the tdp. I mostly want this for general use, portable programming, etc. and sometimes some gaming.
@@SamGarfield1 its not too noisy just high pitched if you playing a game doesnt really matter as you will have audio but for work Id say headphones and music as vscode will get its fans spinning quite quickly :D also dont think you can code on that keyboard, its so tiny its not really comfortable for a lot of typing, so It will be a desktop setup with external everything
@Moonrakerd AI has seriously reduced the amount of typing I need to do. A thumb keyboard is actually workable now.
7840 what is that ?
Thanks for mentioning the fan pitch, this always goes unsaid and it's a total dealbreaker for some! :(
Very insightful metal vs. plastic thermal tests even if you don't care about the particular device!
What a weird coincidence, I was doing some research on if GPD has updated the GPD Win Mini and your video popped up.
cant wait for mine to arrive in a couple of days!!!!!
Awesome. I want one!!!
Daaaaaamn, there is SO MUCH choice right now !!!!!
Thanks!
WHOA! Dude!! Thank you so much! This is extremely generous!!
I know that I'm hard to satisfy but I'd love something between the Mini and the MAx size wise: an 8inch screen with small bezels (the fist win max had way too big ones) and full sized keys.
I’d much rather see the Win 4 with a 7-8” screen myself.
@@protaginets The clamshell from factor is king for pocketability and portability. I'd still prefer it.
I doubt an 8 inch would be pocketable. The win mini already seems to be cutting it close. I'll wait to get it before making a final judgement though I guess.
@@thibaldus3happy for you, but the clamshell design also has too many compromises for my taste.
@@particular_individual I have very big pockets. 😉
I wish it wasn't, but that's still way too warm in general - and especially on the controls...
I really, REALLY want this device.
Thank you for the review but im waiting for the win max 3!!!
Bro that thumbnail is glorious!
If you ever get a 760M and 740M device (or...880M/860M/840M next year lol), could you test CU performance scaling (same PL and clock?)
The heat that is being transfered is way less because metal is very thermally conductive and plastic is not. It's why ice will also melt slower on same room temperature plastic vs metal.
And the reason I think, why you seem to remove heat from the plastic body is because it is not able to heatup as fast as the metal one :)
A powerfully hype thumbnail!
I hope the win mini is successful and sells well. Easier sell than the win max 2, which i love a lot!
@The Phawx did you try baldur's Gate 3 on the Mini? I've heard some units have issues in gamepad mode with the screen going co-op splitscreen thinking the trackpad is for player 2 or something.
Thank you for doing this video! Is this your daily driver?
Dude is beaming about this one, I love it.
I would've got it instead of Steam Deck OLED if it had an OLED screen.
I am in love with OLED on handhold devices ever since PS Vita.
Hey. Great job on the video. I really want one. Do you know how upgradeable the storage is?
Are you able to go up to 28 watts on the apu? I know it was locked on the other prototype so was wondering if they fixed that?
I think when it'll be time to replace my desktop, I'll seriously consider using a device like this paired with an eGPU, I don't think there are really good GPU cases just yet though, also having the handheld plugged at all time sounds scary for battery life.
have one of these. They're not great to use when you really need the oomph for extended period of time
really bad choice. Still tons of issues with e gpus on these gpd devices.
dont listen to the others i have replaced mine and love it 😊 it works effectively no problems at all.
It looks awesome and i want one, but GPD has burned me a few too many times with bloating batteries. Also, even with the new insulation.. this thing still looks a bit too hot for my sensitive fingies. I would have been fine with it being a little bit thicker, if it meant it had an even bigger/better cooling solution.
Yea Win1 and Win2 were really bad with batteries. However, since 2020 with the Win Max, the battery supplier GPD is using now seems to be much much better
I haven't had battery issues, but did have other problems with QC on their previous devices. I can't see myself buying another product from them- the biggest advantage of devices like the Steam Deck, Asus Ally, and Legion Go over something like this is that it's far easier to get assistance and repair/return these devices compared to GPD and the rest.
I rarely use my Win 1 and Win 2 anymore since i have the MAX, but they do still work without any problems. I modded the hell out of my WIN 2. I don´t understand how the steam deck or the ally is easier to repair? You can buy nearly every spare part for their devices and change them easily, these are no apple products ;-).
I also have an Ally and both steam decks and i like them a lot, but clamshell GPDs are much more than just candybar gaming devices.@@lyteedge
The Lord of the Minis: The Return of the King.
I have the 7640u mini and the form factor, size, and weight can not be overstated enough.
I have the Legion Go as well and I rather play at lower fps, with the much smaller screen of the mini just for the comfort factor, ergonomically, of using it. My 2¢
Can you please answer two simple questions?
1. Total weight in grams with the new shell?
2. Fan noise is tolerable at 15/20w?
Thank you in advance ❤
I think I seen a video of yours, don't you have one with you putting it in your pocket?
@@kadash977if you search for gpd win mini and order it by release on RUclips, there is a CoD video showing fan curve settings. It stays at 60% on 20w with cpu never going above 77
At 20w playing call of duty it does not go above 77°c and the fan at 60% which is good for me. At 80°c the fan goes to 80% which is loud but can be ignored when gaming with the sound on. 60% even when not gaming is not loud enough to be bad but 80% if not gaming and nothing coming out of the speakers is too loud for me
Yes, it's absolutely pocketable and I've been taking it with me everywhere just in my pocket. I will get a skin and screen protector for it to protect it at least a little but
Would love to know if you plan to use the Max 2 or the Mini mostly? 🙂
i might consider when they release a 8000 series APU in february
8000 series seems like it won't be a big jump. I would wait for an 8000 series APU just so the 7840U will be cheaper (unless GPD decides to make it OLED then I would get the refresh)
I love your zeal for the Win Mini! I almost bought one but I wanted it to function initially as a mini laptop, where I can write notes and such, then secondarily as a gaming handheld but the keyboard buttons are much too small for that. The GPD win max 2 fit that bill more so but it was too expensive considering for a similar price I could just get a new laptop.
people are getting rid of them left and right on Ebay
The win max 2 2023 model is pretty good if you are comfy with integrated graphics.
wow all those cancellations after the first video. Glad it’s sorted and I kept my place in line
gpd gave him a warning to release a new video or forever be out of their free products to preview
Ill be getting one of these when they make a 2024 update or something like that
I was planning on getting one because of the pocket-ability -- even though I'd be putting it in a purse -- though when the Legion Go came around at a much cheaper price, larger screen, and good purse-compatability (the tablet easily fits in a pocket of my small-mediumish purse) it was a no-brainer -- that and I could return it to Best Buy if anything was wrong.
Which is better
@@michaelbmw1931 legion has higher refresh rate, nicer screen, detachable controllers and a real actual warranty and is returnable if there are any issues. The win mini, good luck if you have any issue. You arent getting it fixed or getting a refund without a huge hassle.
win mini.
clamp shell, keyboard.
easy to carry, easy to use.
imo gpd win 4 is the best at portability.
Super cool, but after getting the win max, I'm just not a fan of the form factor. I tried a win4 in person and it's just so much better for me. Gonna hold out for a win5. For now it is super fun having such a powerful tiny laptop haha.
Can we have a performance and general comparison with the Rog Ally/Legion Go?
You mention at around 9:53 that its possible to get up to 8 hours of battery life during lite-load emulation. Its a question ive been trying to get an answer for from GPD for quite some time without success. As you yourself and other reviewers of the prototype model have mentioned the Win Mini prototype was quite powerhungry and had high total power consumption even at low TDP (higher then similar devices). Could you please elaborate further or even better make a video on how to achieve maximum possible battery life on light load and how long would that be? What settings would give 8 hours of battery life on lite emulation for example?
Yes! There is a LOT to talk about here even with other handhelds.
@@ThePhawx I would greatly appreciate it if you did! I have a Win 4 and love it but i still choose to bring my Win 2 on longer trips. On a 10+ hour flight its more important to have enough battery life and i much rather watch movies or play some lite emulation games for the duration then play a AAA-game for 2 hours and then spend the rest of the flight with a dead device.
@@Doint-wp5hobut larger flights have outlets
@@Drivenby low-Watt USB mostly. Enough to trickle-charge a phone but probably not a Win Mini or similar. Anyway its nice not to be teathered to an outlet if you dont have to.
That's where the AYN ODIN 2 Shines the most. Battery Life @@Doint-wp5ho
Phawx, can you do a compare of GPD Win Mini vs Ayaneo Flip? The Flip just got announced and it looks like a good contender
So is it still portrait screen? And if so, why does that matter so much on, for example, the Legion Go, but doesn't get a mention here? Dealbreaker for me in any case.
Does it have a native landscape screen like the Win 4? If not, what are the disadvantages? Would it be better to get the Win 4 instead?
vs Steam Deck OLED? I'd love to see an apples-to-oranges comparison of this with the Steam Deck OLED as I'm considering both. Thank you for your great content. Cheers.
I would have been very tempted if the ABXY wasn't to the left of the stick. It's towards the right on Sony/Xbox/Nintendo/SteamDeck. Strange choice.
I had a gpd win 2 and a gpd win max, I preferred the symmetrical layout of the win 2 personally. The offset layout feels weird when the controls are aligned. They probably just don't have enough room internally to put the thumbsticks in the middle. I agree that ideally it would be like playstation/steam deck/gpd win 1.
Honestly I just got the SD Oled a couple of days ago I've been on it nonstop this weekend everything feels good about it except that it's bulky. I often look over at my Vita and want that form factor I'm think of returning my OLED and grabbing this which would also serve as my laptop's replacement but I'm not sure :(
Just get a ally. Much smaller.
@@MicaelAzevedo I've tried the ally although not as long, that was also too big for what I wanted I was hoping the OLED and better software would be the difference for me, it wasn't enough.
You can return it? Steamdeck
I was like you, that's why I bought a win 4. But I realised the win 4 is too small to game on it comfortable for hours. I didn't ever have that problem with the steam deck, and it's solely because it's bigger and more ergonomic. Btw I don't have big hands, rather small hands actually.
@@kevinpiot7317 I agree with you, it's the reason why I sold my WIN 3 but the WIN 2 I could game on for hours on end.
I wish they put in a full keyboard. It'd be my perfect pocket gaming laptop.
does anyone know how to keep the backlit keyboard on? for the win mini. i cant figure it out.
I really hope valve considers making a device like this. The Steam Deck is nice but its so big that I dont often take it anywhere
I don't understand...this looks even bigger to me than the Steam Deck (in terms of how you'd actually hold it) seeing as it's more or less a full laptop (just smaller than most, of course). Maybe it's a lot lighter than I'm thinking
@@zake64it's significantly lighter, but the issue is the size when being transported. This thing is the size of an Xbox controller when folded
@@creaturecore13are you sure it is significantly lighter????
@@zake64 It’s nowhere near as wide as the Steam Deck, so it should be much easier to take it with you. I also really like GPD’s clamshell design, since you don’t need to look as far down when holding it.
@@ThePC007 Also nor only is the GPD pocketable, the clamshell design protects the screen and most buttons.
The Steam Deck is not pocketable, and you really want to carry it in the case, adding more bulk.
I do love my Steam Deck, but it's not a pocket handheld...
What I don't like about the GPD Win Mini is Win 11. I wonder how much of the software is a necessity and can't be ported to another OS. I'd love to do a Steam OS GPD Mini, but if I lose functionality, such as calibrating joystick dead zones, I'm not sure it's worth it.
My gpd mini arrived yesterday and is awesome, but the dpad after playing a while turn warm, is the only complain.
I played a lot switch at 12 watts (mario rpg) and is almost 3 hours.
I been using this for a few weeks, and at and over 15 watts this thing gets hot as shit still.
Mine as well.... Was this fixed over a update or at the factory? Ive been thinking about sending mine back
@@user-du4pt2xt9h if ur in ur window send it back. They have a refresh that was announced with better thermals, vrr screen, and a few little upgrades. I sent mine as soon as I heard about this rumored
Refresh. If they need to refresh a product 6 months after launch they shouldn’t have launched it to begin with. (Also has the new 8840u in it )
I went off GPD when my Win Max 2 lost it's ability to take a battery charge after a few months, It only functions when the power cable is plugged in now, so its not really portable.
My max 2 randomly disconnects the micro sd card, it's irritating
LOL, yep I have the same issue, even after supposed bios update fix, I just don't use micro SD's anymore.GPD release some broken stuff obviously.@@Moes_Prep_and_Tech
Is there any way to get the mini working with 40hz? I keep getting image distortion with cru?
Can this just have a second monitor plug into it? Like what most laptops can do with an HDMI?
I need this. As a soon to be dad, going to handheld gaming could be my only real way to do some gaming.
Congratulations! Yes these devices will be your friends!
You use a gpd win max 2 7840u with a 4090 ?
Can you make a video about that ? performance and all ?
Hey phawx, i am looking to have a bit more minimalizm in my life. Owning few, but good things.
Would you say this would work well as an all in one pc? I own a tower and a steam deck with windows11.
While the steam deck is great, the formfactor is keeping me from selling my tower and only using my SD as my only pc.
What are your thoughts?
(The most graphically intensive game i play is helldivers 2 and i am ok with low-mid settings 720p in general)
I got a GPD win 4 now it's time to get GPD a win mini
I was so close to buying this....but then I looked up how their customer support works and got a legion go instead.
In your earlier review, you mentioned that the display being backlit in portrait mode along with the 120Hz display causes a lot of smearing.
This was one of the main reasons against the Win Mini.
Since you didn't speak at all about the display, I'm guessing this is still the case on the production model

awesome little pocket PC
Which Occulink dock are you using? And how is the reliability on these? My concern is that some part fails and your only choice is to ship it to China and pray.
Can the refresh rate be set to 40hz in the Windows display settings?
No, you can limit fps to 40 and since it's divisible into 120 you get a smooth picture. Actual power savings is very small. So far measured only .5w difference between 120hz and 60hz.
The only thing that bothers me is that we don't have a single regular usb type a port. Only the type c port ...
Any fan noise problem with production unit?
Which one better in usability and practicality GPD Win Mini or GPD Win 4?
If I buy one today, will I get this refreshed model?
What's the max tdp this can go to without throttling to use when docked
Does the gpd win mini have any kind of pen support?
I am on the fence between this, the GPD Win 4, and the Ayaneo Flip. I’d really love to see VRR, but I’m starting to feel like I should prioritize OCuLink over that (especially since I’m mostly casual in handheld mode and the screen on the Switch Lite I have doesn’t bother me).
Ayaneo’s attention to detail and software are suuuuuper compelling for me. I’m just not in love with the Flip’s overall aesthetic.
Anybody have opinions they wanna share?
New GPD Win Mini 2024 is coming out April
I GOT A QUESTION DO YOU STILL GOT THE SMACH Z PROTOTYPE??
Was very interested in this previously, but the heat issue with the shell in the preview + reveal of ayaneo flip KB/DS + steam deck oled just kills the interest in this.
Hope they learnt the leasons from this and may consider this if they refresh it with the zen 5 8XXX series next year.
Maybe they can even get a true landscape panel by then.
That king is gaming, forever may he reign!
Win mini vs god win 4 which one is better
Do a win 4 versus win mini video please
i am still confused about the screen wrapping situation, will I have to run a screen wrapper for some games with this thing? the gpd win 4 didnt right? does it do the same thing as that? if not how do i even run a screen wrapper, I tried looking on your channel about it but I didnt find anything, is it like a one time install program or a game to game thing??? someome answer PLEASE
no answer 😔
Once this arrives, I have af eeling my other handhelds are going to collect dust...
YAY
The heat still looks similar for the buttons, you never put it thr thermometer results
Visually, pay attention to the part where when I place my finger down on the plastic side and how you can see the entire area of my finger changes the temperature versus the metal. It's not just temps but how the plastic *stays* cool when heat is robbed from the shell, whereas the metal always stays hot
I love the thumbnail lmao
Hello! Can you change VRAM in Bios?
How about game streaming? Is it good?
If GPD makes Win Mini 2 OLED. I am so in!
When ,?
@@michaelbmw1931 There's nothing confirmed that I know of. But when I left a comment on the GPD Channel saying that I didn't buy the Win Mini because it doesn't have an OLED. They replied that since Steam & Nintendo have an OLED version that they will look into it. My dream would be that the refresh of the Mini (they seem to do refreshes of all their recent products) would have an OLED screen.
Here's hoping the Ayaneo Flip brings a new level of competition to GPD. A proper Dualscreen model for the GPD Win would be amazing
A DS Win-2/Win-Mini is the ultimate UMGPC/handheld, the amount of systems it would enable you to emulate would be awsome, and having a second screen for trainers, maps, huds, guides, videos, music players, artwork, web browsers, the list is endless, a DS is the end game handheld PC, especially if we got one 4:3 screen and one 16:10 screen, imagine being able to display every single game with the correct aspect ratio on a single handheld device.
Something that actually fits in your pocket would be amazing.
@@Wobble2007AyaNeo teased a dual screen Flip model, don’t know if they’re going to make it.
@@protocetid If you want to try to shove a Windows machine into your pocket, be my guest. But Windows runs hot, and I wouldn't try. Clamshell is better for other reasons
