How to Give Without Expectation

  • I know the thumbnail seems a bit like clickbait, but I kept it because it's true. This philosophy and approach to life radically changed my worldview. It drives how I approach business, friendships, and charity.
When we give to others without expecting ANYTHING in return, we create.
    We create relationships.
    We create opportunity.
These things can change our entire lives.
When we create, good things happen. Usually.
Most people run into the pitfall of giving WHILE expecting something, even if they claim for it to be helpful.
You commonly see this in dating. A man could be very nice to someone he's interested in. However, this "nice" facade can suddenly turn sour when it's not reciprocated.
    He was giving with expectation.
When we give without expectation, this means we don't expect ANYTHING.
Not friendship. Not love. Not respect.
If this makes you uncomfortable, you don't have to do it. You can establish expectations of what you want in return.
However, don't claim to give selflessly while you secretly want something in return.
    That's called manipulation, my friend.
    Have a beautiful day.

Honestly opened my eyes. I was raised to believe that you should always expect respect and appreciation from people because it’s just the “right way to act” I guess. I’ve subconsciously been expecting things from people that I deem to be “simple” and almost basic common courtesy, but the disappointment and tank in self esteem when I don’t receive these things is not worth it. I don’t need the respect, kindness, and and appreciation from others to repay that of my own, because the lack thereof just makes my self worth decline until I feel like I don’t even deserve these things

Understand this : if you find yourself begging for basic respect, friendship and the same level of attention in return, you need to take a step back
*Because you're asking for the bare minimum*
And if they don't understand that, stop wasting your time, cut them out of your life 👍🏻

Hi Hampton, old senior lady, new viewer, and love your calisthenics videos; I am working to regain the strength the flexibility I had at age 8, nearly 60 years ago. Just wanted to share something our pastor told us last week about doing nice things for others, and he was talking in terms of Christians- it is a quote from the great reformer of the church, Martin Luther: “God does not need your good deeds, but your neighbor does!” It really helped me understand why we help others, because they are all our neighbors.

Oh Hampton, I just discovered you last night, had already gone, "I *really* like this guy," but with this video you've cemented it. This has pretty much been my philosophy through most of my life - you do things because they're the right thing to do, not because of what you're hoping to get out of them.
Whether it's picking up a piece of garbage laying on the ground, mowing an elderly neighbour's lawn for them, or starting a group or event to give back to the community that helped make your own life better, you do it because it's the right thing to do, and kindness matters.
    More power to you mate!

I also truly believe in this.. along my life journey I’ve been a giver, I’ve learned lessons from being this way as far as when I was young expecting back, resentment etc.. once I got wiser I was able to find more balance, for instance being able to say no, which I’ve always struggled with, although now I’m still very much a giver without expectation and a much healthier balance.. great video!🙌🏼

Wow so true, I realized it now that it is the reason for my misery. I did 'things' for my family, although I had a depressing childhood. At that time I didn't consciously thought about getting something in return.
But when I turned 30, I asked them for a little help for the first time in my life. They denied. And then I felt exactly as you described. It carried for me to my relationship too. Misery, schizophrenia, bipolar and toxicity all because I couldn't live with other people not helping me when I needed.
I need to get over this rage and forgive people in my life.
