Feb 89' "Secrets of the Shoalin Temple" by Steven Barnes details Lee's loss in a real altercation with Lebell on the set of " The Green Hornet". Contact Barnes and ask him what would give him the confidence to put this story in print in a national periodical such as BlackBelt magazine. This is especially more interesting since Ed Parker verified the story also. I also wonder why in after 40 years of reading martial arts publications, neither the Lee family or someone like Inosanto have said this story is false. It is especially intriguing considering to write this story in a Lee fanboy magazine such as BlackBelt would require a real sense of confidence to make this claim. Someone do so real research instead of internet searches and ask Barnes who his sources were.

  • @mrpopsicleman
    @mrpopsicleman 3 месяца назад +6

Gene LeBell may have been a martial arts expert, but he was also a pro wrestler. And like many pro wrestlers from the old school everything is kept "kayfabe" era, told a lot of bullshit stories to make himself sound good. It's no different than Hulk Hogan, who has made a number of ridiculous claims over the years. Some include:
    * Wrestled 400 days a year due to crossing the international date line, which makes no sense.
    * Fought PRIDE fighters in Japan in the 1970s, 20+ years before PRIDE existed.
    * Claimed Elvis was a fan of his and used to come watch him wrestle for Jerry Lawler in Memphis, Tennessee. In reality, Hogan had his very first pro wrestling match working for Eddie Graham in CWF in Fort Myers, Florida on August 10, 1977, which was only 6 days before Elvis died.
    * Metallica really wanted him to be their bass player. This is despite the fact that Hogan was no longer a musician and was already a wrestler working in WWF, AWA, and NJPW in 1981 when Metallica was formed. Oh, and Lars Ulrich says he's never even met Hulk Hogan.
    You get the idea.
I think Gene LeBell was no different. In most interviews over the years, he gave nothing but praise to Bruce Lee. The only exceptions are when he's cutting wrestling promos, like at 3:50 in this video, and in the middle of that terrible "I Am Bruce Lee" documentary (where again, he was cutting wrestling promos). He's never told any story about roughing up Bruce in any filmed interview, other than just stating that he'd throw him out the window in the above mentioned documentary. (I know you like that documentary, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.)
In my opinion, as demonstrated 13:35, LeBell tried to make himself more famous off the back of Bruce Lee. Quite frankly, to the general masses, he was a nobody until he became famous for being Rhonda Rousey's trainer. The story about roughing up Bruce Lee on the set of the Green Hornet is something he embellished to the Joe Rogans and the UFC fanboys of the world who all started kissing his ass in the past decade or so of his life. And apparently, Quentin Tarantino is one of Gene's fanboys.
Also, facts are fact. Outside of appearing in a couple of TV shows together, there's no evidence that either trained with the other. And let us be honest, if Bruce Lee actually taught Gene LeBell kung fu strikes, maybe he would have taught them to Rhonda Rousey, and her punches wouldn't have looked like shit. ;)
Even those in the wrestling world believe the Green Hornet story is rubbish. Here are a few clips from Jim Cornette's podcast on the subject:

    ruclips.net/video/7B0kfrCUYUM/видео.html

Lebell tells the media one thing and personal confidantes something else. Bruce Lee fanboys have no problems with stories of Bruce Lee winning fights on film sets, but if he loses fighting on a film set is unprofessional and impossible. Someone tell me how Barne's story got cleared by a Lee nuthugger magazine like BlacBelt without being true. He also mentioned that Gene said that Brandon Lee was in fact alot quicker and stronger than Bruce. Not sure if this is true but thats the story we were told. My cousin did go train with Larry at Gene's school in North Hollywood along with Gokor. Dont know if the story is true but did catch my attention 😬

Contact Barnes and ask him what would give him the confidence to put this story in print in a national periodical such as BlackBelt magazine. Very well done and great analysis :)! Here are some things about LeBell in general:
Nobody, i repeat NOBODY from the Green Hornet crew, be it leading actor Van Williams, leading actress Wende Wagner, producer Charles Fitzsimons or even Stunt Chief Bennie E. Dobbins, ever mentioned this "LeBell took Lee over his shoulder" thing.
Only LeBell claims it in his own 2003 published Bio, and everybody can read it there. And of course LeBell told that story everyone who wanted to hear it.
Fact is Bennie E. Dobbins died in 1988, and only after he died LeBell claimed "Dobbins called me up to teach Lee a lesson". Ask yourself why he didnt say it before 1988? Because its a lie and Dobbins would expose it as such in a second.
He was already exposed about other lies. He most probably never choked Steven Seagal out, and there are also zero witnesses about his so called fight with American Football Legend James Nathaniel "Jim" Brown.
Here on the YT Channel "Viking Samurai", two first hand witnesses, Stunt Chief Conrad Palmissano and Stuntman Steven Lambert, said LeBell never choked Seagal out. Seagal suckerpunched LeBell in the groin, yes, and they both felt to the ground, but there was no choke out.
And even if its very hard for LeBell's fans, i cant confirm it nor i can say its not true, but Seagal said in an interview here on YT some of his japanese friends checked out any Kodokan, Budokan, Judokai etc to find out if LeBell has a black belt, and they couldnt find a single one.
One of the guys even came back and said LeBell never studied the original japanese art of Judo (founded by Jigoro Kano), but some american version of it, not Jūdō but Judo (watch the spelling!).
Jūdō is the original art from Kano, but in the USA there is Judo. Its an American version of it, but they promote their practitioniers differently.
I cant go to Japan and check it out, but fact is the Kōdōkan is the headquarter of Jūdō worldwide. And if no Gene LeBell, or Ivan LeBell, or Ivan Gene LeBell is listed there, then he indeed never archived a real black belt, or even 10th degree red belt which is the highest rank in Jūdō.
Any 10th degree red belt is listed there.
LeBell was in 1 episode of TGH, and it was Episode 11. He was never credited in any cast (including IMDB) being either in more episodes or being involved with choreography or what ever for some episodes. According to IMDB, he was in one episode. He is only credited as "Henchman" and "Stunt Performer" in one episode, nothing else. A year later he was indeed a "Stunt Coordinator" in the movie "The Happiest Millionaire".
    Buttom line:
Ask yourself the 100 million $ question: Why did LeBell never made these comments about being Lee's grappling teacher, or picking him up on the set of Green Hornet, during the time Dobbins was still alive?
    Ask yourself why?
It's the same with Seagal: He claims for years he met Lee in Jim Coburn's house around 1970/71, when Steven was only 18/19 yeras old.
Coburn died in 2002, and you wont find any record of Seagal claiming that pre 2002 when Coburn was still alive.
    Why?
Then a video emerge which was recorded around 1986/87 when Segal was according to the narrator 34 years old, and Coburn states:
"About 3-4 years ago, i met Steven Seagal. We became very close friends."
3-4 years ago means around 1982-1984. So how could Steven met Bruce at Coburn's house around 1970/71, when Coburn himself stated he met Steven around 1982-83?
Contradiction after contradiction after contradiction after contradiciton.
Bring all of this to a court room with judges and jury, and the outcome most probably would be:
    - LeBell never was Lee's grappling teacher (0 witnesses he was)
    - LeBell never took Lee over his shoulder on the Set of GH (0 witnesses he did)
    - LeBell never choked out Seagal (0 witnesses he did, to the contrary)
    - Seagal never met Lee (timeline doesnt match)
And maybe LeBell never studied the real japanese art of Jūdō which was founded by Jigoro Kano, but he ran around his whole life calling imself "Judo" Gene LeBell.

Thx :)! Here is more, i guess many ppl dont know about it:
After watching a video about the Tarantino claims from Viking Samurai with Hollywood stuntman George Pogacich again, maybe the true story about Lee and LeBell was completely different, or at least it makes the most sense from all: LeBell proved actually he was lying, because the real incident took place during filming "Ironside" and not "The Green Hornet".
Pogacich has first hand informations about the Hollywood stunt scene since he is a well known stuntman, and he stated LeBell's original story was he took Lee over his shoulder while they were doing a stunt together, that's all.
Watch the two in "Ironside", there is actually a fight scene in which Gene's character "karate student" takes Bruce's character "Leon Soo" over his shoulder, but Leon comes back to his feet and kicks Karate student to the floor. You can find the scene here on YT ("bruce lee ironside").
This incident completely matches what Pogacich and LeBell described, but first of all it wasnt a fight, second it was done during filming a scene when karate student had to take Leon Soo over his shoulder, and third it had nothing to do someone [Bennie E. Dobbins] called up LeBell to teach Lee a lesson or what ever, that was all fabricated nonsesnse and lies by Mr. LeBell (RiP!).
The fact alone that LeBell stated it was during "Green Hornet", when in fact it most probably was during "Ironside", shows you Ivan Gene LeBell changed many things. And the reason why LeBell said it was Green Hornet is simple:
Because Lee was there for nine months and 26 episodes, while Ironside he was only in 1 episode, so the story about: "The stuntchief Bennie E. Dobbins called me [Gene] up to teach Bruce a lesson" wouldnt have worked. Lee's appearance in "Ironside" was only 2 minutes or so, and i am sure he filmed that scene in 1-2 days. And Dobbins wasnt even involved in "Ironside".
So it seems very likely Lee and LeBell had this one shoulder throw scene in "Ironside", and one little scene in "The Green Hornet", there was no call from Dobbins, there was no "teaching him a lesson", there was no "student-teacher relationship" between them afterwards.
Things like that are comon in other cases:
      JKF Assassination:
      Witness Lee Edward Bowers:
Shortly after JFK was assassinated, there was a witness name Lee Bowers. This guy was asked by the police if he saw someone on the picket fence, the so called "grassy knoll", and he said no.
In the months and years later he said he saw guys there, then they had guns and rifles, then he saw a puff of smoke, etc.. His story became bigger and bigger.
      Judyth Vary Baker:
This woman suddenly appeared in the 80s and claimed she was Lee Harvey Oswald's girlfriend from summer 1963 until November when Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby two days after the JFK assassination.
It's strange to me how many fans and supporters she have. Many ppl in the JFK assassinatio take that woman serious. She even wrote a book "Me & Lee" in 2011. Sure she worked in the same building as Oswald in the summer of '63, but there is nothing else.
I highly doubt she ever met Oswald, but like i said there are many ppls who buy her story.
You find things like that in many other cases too. Some people met someone famous for one moment, or worked in the same building or what ever, and then they claim they had an affair with him (Judyth with Oswald), or was the grappling teacher (LeBell-Lee), etc.
Pogacich's version sounds the most logical from all when it comes to Lee and LeBell.
And in the end, I wouldnt be surprised if Ivan Gene LeBell and Bruce Junfan Lee saw each other on these two occasions, never again afterwards, and LeBell stretched the story over the years.
And i would also be not surprised if Judyth A. Vary Baker and Lee Harvey Oswald never met each other.

The idea that Bruce & Gene may have not actually trained together is an interesting possibility to me, you certainly make a valid point in saying there doesn't appear to be any actual evidence (photographic, training diary, etc.) of it having taken place, but ... hasn't Dan Inosanto said something to the affect of "I could tell when Bruce had been training with Gene because he (Bruce) would want to practice submission holds on me out of the blue"? I can't remember where I read that (how many interviews/magazine articles with Dan have there been? More than I can recall), but I do remember reading some quote like that from Dan, & if I recall correctly he, Larry Hartsell, & even Brandon trained with Gene at least a little later on. I do think Dan would be a good person to ask about whether or not Gene "taught Bruce Lee grappling".
As for Gene's story of his first meeting with Bruce, Gene having been a "story teller" (though I don't consider him a flat out liar in the same league as Steven "Bruce Lee & I had sons the exact same age!" Seagal or Bob "Bruce & I actually filmed parts of that locker room fight together" Wall), it seems difficult if not impossible to tell how much if any of that particular tale is true. Sad note, it seems like no likely witness is around any more to tell what they might've seen, Van Williams, Wende Wagner, Bennie Dobbins (hope I got that name right), they're all gone.

The late Van Williams did confirm in an interview (that can be found here at RUclips) that Bruce Lee, did in fact, accidentally injure stuntmen on the set of The Green Hornet due to his inexperience at doing fight scenes.
Remember that Lee, up until that time, had only started in dramatic movies in Hong Kong and was not used to staging fight scenes where you can miss hitting someone by a mile using camera angles. Unknowingly, Lee was connecting with the stuntmen.
Also Lee would kick or punch fast which is unnecessary for screen fighting because the film is moving only at 24 frames per second. This did not allow stuntmen to react properly, and was a blur on playback. While it might be true that he was asked to slow his movements, this is not a metric of superhuman speed. Any competent martial artist, boxer, or athlete could punch too fast for film stock that was used in the day. It's more common to slow down movements, or to "undercrank" the camera.
The "lesson" Lee was taught on The Green Hornet is also talked about in the Van Williams interview and it was Dobbins relinquishing control of fight choreography and 2nd unit action directing to a very overconfident but inexperienced, Bruce Lee. But I'll let anyone interested hear it for themselves by searching and listening to the Van Williams interview here on RUclips.

Fung Sifu even said something to the effect that when he taught Bruce judo in his younger years, Bruce was just a beginner. However, when Bruce return the Hong Kong later to make those films, he claimed that Bruce had “surpassed him“. I don’t believe this meant in judo I think this meant in martial arts in general. Nothing new. Bruce Lee once said during an interview with Black Belt Magazine. He said that there are many professionals martial artist who are stronger than me, but there was no one who was stronger than me in artistic martial movements. He did not hide this information, for which he is respected.

They made it like a salesman trying to sell you the best made car. As they advertised themselves, there are lies and jealousy towards Bruce Lee... even today ...

Its very easy to say things ,when the only other person who could back you up is dead ,
Unfortunately people have a perseption that martial arts like karate ,kunfu ,and even tykwondo ,they only know how to punch and kick ,many martial arts have grapling and close fighting techniques, you dont see in competition or films ,judo is a fairly modern martial art ,wich was chosen over Jujitsu for the Japanese armed forces ,
Considering Bruce lees interest in Western boxing ,it is foolish to think he wouldnt of known or studied judo before the late sixties

Feb 89 blackbelt "Secret of Shoalin Temple column" by Steven Barnes (its online) ......Lebell gets in real fight with Bruce Lee because he wont have his stuntmen do stunts Lee wants.....Lebell takes Lee down and gets him in an jiu-ji gatame armbar.....This is also why Lee has the scene with Saxon breaking the hold in ETD as a sort of defense to it (but far too late) Story is actually verified by Ed Parker who would probably know as well as anyone......what Lebell tells confidants about this incident such as what Stripey describes seems closer to this story.....It seems Lebell shades the truth with outsiders and media....it also makes sense that Lebell is not in any of Lee's diaries because Lee doesnt seem like a guy who is going to train with someone who kicked his ass.

One other thing. If he liked Gene and if they were freinds then how come Bruce never put Gene in any of his movies. He didn't give him any part in anything he did.

Gene was a Pro wrestler for a LONG time. He was always "working" people. Just watch Gene's mannerisms when he talks. You can kind of tell that he's goofing around. That's why he was never consistent with his Bruce Lee Stories. He was constantly making them up to get a reaction out of people. Look for the difference in his mannerisms when he compliments Bruce and then when he was saying that Rhonda could beat him. It's like watching two different people.
Think of it this way, have you ever heard a Hulk Hogan interview where he isn't lying his butt off. The only difference between the two is that Gene knew he was working everyone. Hulk isn't. He actually thinks that he's telling the truth despite that he never tells the same story in the same way twice...Brother...
I have actually heard that Tank Abbot is always working people too. Remember when he said he wanted to fight Rhonda Rousey and beat her and afterward he'd make her make him a sandwich. He was working people to get a reaction. I thought that it was hysterical when he said that.

I think if there was any proof of this happening then surely Van William's would have mentioned it in atleast one of his many interviews. Whether he was a witness or atleast heard about it. 😂

Tarantino’s reasoning for bringing Gene LeBell to ‘teach Bruce Lee a lesson’ makes absolutely NO sense from a professional, production, and business standpoint. If a stuntman injuries a star or co-star of a production ON PURPOSE-what do think would happen to the stuntman/fight coordinator? Tarantino just doubling down on him saying his Bruce Lee character in Once upon a time was what Bruce Lee was really like. Ridiculous.

Me personally I do not believe Chuck Norris taught Bruce Lee high kicks, when Bruce Lee already know how to do high kicks. I feel Chuck Norris and others claim that they taught Bruce Lee to put their name out there. What people should do is just tell the truth. Of course in this society that is too much to ask. And according to what I have read the stuntmen couldn't keep up with Bruce Lee's movements because Bruce Lee was so fast. So Gene LaBelle was bought in to work with Bruce Lee because Gene LaBelle could keep up with Bruce's movements. Gene LaBelle was the only stuntman that could keep up with Bruce Lee while the other stuntmen could not. Don't know if it's true or not like I said according to what I have read.
