I still can't believe you went through a life changing, major surgery and had to deal with this, the travelling, the meetings, the run around and lying.
The side details are really good information for anyone thinking about moving to an underdeveloped country.... From the way the "judicial system" works, to the hospitals (no Dr's for certain surgeries, the way payment is expected, no supplies, etc), to the family having the sole ability to let you out of jail or send you to prison (that's the most blatant conflict of interest I've ever seen), to neighbors spying on you, etc etc.
Living in a country that has great weather & cheap cost of living is not always a good option when all the other factors are taken into account.

This is the side of living in a foreign country, particularly Latin American countries, that many do not know about unless they have lived there for a while, and even then may not know if they live in a bubble. It irks me to see RUclips influencers carry on about the glossy, trendy side of many places. It is exploitative in my opinion for many reasons. It is also delusional and not responsible. I am sorry to hear of all the misfortune this family had. The life of an expat poses good and bad challenges. Knowing the lay of the land is important. WOW...I had to pause this seven minutes in. So, the FAMILY basically decides your husband's fate???? Is the the way that it works in Nicaragua?? If there's a death in a vehicular accident, the family of the deceased gets to decide the other driver's fate no matter whose at fault? Was it ever decided what your husband was "guilty" of? The charge? I know that you can't tell us any of this but just so many questions.....P.S. I am so grateful for your mother-in-law and also Greg and Hannah. Greg...what a wonderful person he is for staying by his new friend even though he had been released and could have gone about on his way. That really touches me.
Yes, if you get into an accident in Nicaragua, no matter whose fault it is. The Nica will always want to get paid, a death makes it 1000X worse

It’s well known in Central America that Nicaraguan people tend to take advantage of the situation (specially if it involves money)…of course I’m not talking about everyone but yeah…I’ve had my personal experiences and people I know…so it’s good you had a lot of people tryin to help you through this…so sorry you had to go through this!

@@theflightoficarus4561 Yeah, I follow a RUclipsr who lives in the Philippines, and there's been stories of an expat interested in a rural Philippines lady who wanted to build his future wife a house because her family lived in dismal conditions. Philippine soon-to-be relative of the expat offered to handle everything, because of course, the expat price is twice or so of the Philippine's price for everything, but the Philippine relative said he could get a good price comparable to what a Philippine person would be charged. Turned out the $$$ that the relative said was a "good price" was the larger expat price, but the relative actually bought the stuff under the smaller Philippine pricing structure without telling the expat, and built a 2nd home (which the relative said he was planning to build with his own money anyway...LOL) on the difference between what the relative charged the expat and the 'real' reduced price the Philippine relative paid for everything. Thought nothing of screwing the expat. Yeah, I'd let the Nicaraguan lawyer handle it...I'm sorry you have to go thru this. God bless.

I don’t know how this whole thing ends financially other than your husband eventually gets released, thank God. I also understand that the family lost a loved one and would always believe that someone should pay for it. If the truth is that he was intoxicated then unfortunately he put his life at risk, your husband was in the wrong place at the wrong time and this was all about money for them, probably after talking to other people who saw it as a money grab. No money brings back their person and again, he put himself in that scenario himself by being a distracted driver. Unfortunately this is part of the risk of moving to a country whose laws don’t protect you as expats. Let this be a warning for all, you put yourself in danger when you cross a border outside of your own.

All true. She is very bravely putting their story out there. Its not all rainbows and unicorns when you leave your country. Warning bells went off when someone moves so far from family, with a chronic illness, small children, culture divides, and not speaking the language. I am so glad they are home and safe now.🙏🫶

When you were talking about the ostomy leaking and all the stress from that alone, I thought about how I would manage all that was happening around you and to you, and I am honestly in AWE about how you were able to cope. I would have completely fallen apart. You are an incredibly strong person.
The fact the deceased was intoxicated shouldve been factored in and your hubby given a fair trial. That system is so flawed.

My heart goes out to you!! Five years ago for three of those my husband had a ileostomy bag. We endured so many leaks, his skin became raw, both of us in tears. Big big hugs!!!!

A blockage is incredibly painful regardless of stoma..
My dad has crohns disease and he's had 2 or 3 blockages in the last 30 years and he said he's never experienced anything more painful.
The smell of the fluids/air from the bags are soo foul its hard to describe. It's not regular human waste/gas
Only a few mins into this video but I'm guessing it's not just the family. The lady who denied mtgs, anyone who can get in on this blackmail scheme is holding up the process. They assume you're not from there, you must be rich. So so sad. Each time u said, "they said not to tell anyone" I'm screaming, "b/c they're plotting against u to get

I absolutely agree. I'm wondering just how much of this is the usual underfunded & corrupt legal system in Nicaragua, and/or exactly how much of this is other people participating in lying to her and her husband that they must go to this meeting and that meeting all over the place all the time and then the required people are never supposedly there, in an effort to wear her and her husband down because they are expats and helping the family of the deceased to get a bigger payout? I'm sorry they had to go thru all this, plus with complications of her surgery...sad and frustrating.
If you eat a few marshmallows before your plate change, it will slow down the motility for enough time to allow for a better seal

He probably did...and could have been the breadwinner. So, yeah, also the family thought they had won the lottery having a "rich" expat being charged with the death.

They don’t. If you mediate, you can avoid prosecution. He could have went to court, and fought his case. He chose to pay off the family instead. Basically a wrongful death can be settled civilly or criminally. They chose the civil route.
@@GoochGooch-cc7sj I understand but via her videos, they tried and tried and tried to mediate (pay off the family) but even with agreeing on a price, apparently a judge has to OK this "mediation" and a lot of judges or authorized civil servants had been laid off and/or weren't available to do this...which was a lot of their problems. So she goes on and on about going to meeting after meeting after meeting at various places to mediate (or pay off the family) and not being able to do so because the appropriate judges or civil servants who have to oversee this mediation were never available or there in the end. So the family of the deceased used this opportunity to extort a higher price from her and her husband. Even their Nicaraguan people representing her husband & her met with the deceased guy's family and tried to negotiate by saying they WOULD go to court and if so, it would come out that the deceased had been doing illegal stuff (drunk while drunk, etc.) and the deceased family could lose and would get no $$$ (altho it didn't work). I think the reason they didn't want to go to court is that could take months to years of the husband being in jail with the lack of judges, and no rights of the accused for a speedy trial as in the U.S.

This is why I don’t travel outside the United States anymore in the mid 90s I went to Mexico with the wrong people and got put in a Mexican jail for 8 days until my brother came to bribe them to let me out I was so glad to get out of that shit hole it was really bad some of the guards were ok but I’m good right here in the good ole

I wouldn’t want to stay somewhere like that either. The whole story is awful and could’ve been avoided if their family member wasn’t drinking and driving🤦🏻♀️ They don’t deserve a dime and karma will get them someday
They stated that Franklin was drunk and speeding on a moto that was shut off. I don’t buy any of that crap.
It’s crazy that this family was trying to make money off you guys when it was their family member’s fault that he died! They should be paying you for the damages. You weren’t even at fault!

A rep from their family met with the deceased member's family, via what we are told from this video, and reminded the family that the deceased WAS drunk at the time of the accident as well as may have made an illegal turn (as I understand it, her husband had the right of way), and if this all went to court, they would get no $$$. But I actually follow some emerging country RUclipsrs who are expats and it's not unusual to blame the expat or foreigner, no matter what. Her husband could have very easily been sentenced in court to life in prison...and the deceased member's family knew this. That's why, when they d-i-d negotiate that using that tactic, it didn't go far, IMHO. Yes, under ordinary circumstances, one would think that...I think that the fact they were foreigners gave them a distinct disadvantage...in everything.

What the fuck is wrong with you.
I am sorry your husband got into an accident, and I feel particularly bad for the family of the man he killed. However, almost everything you have described could have been avoided. Such a scenario is extremely rare and could have happened in any country where expats choose to live. For example, I don't recommend expats to drive at night, especially around SJDS and in-between cities due to dangers of drunks on the road. It's always better to hire a driver, take a taxi, or take public transit. Motorcycles are fine because you're only going to kill/hurt yourself, but driving around in a truck at night in areas full of bars and celebratory activity can be dangerous.
Too bad this has completely soured your experience of Nicaragua, and I think this series of videos will turn off potential expats to the country, but this experience is truly extremely rare and totally avoidable. It's a beautiful country full of very kind and non-confrontational people. In many years, I have NEVER heard any story even close to as bad as this one. A real edge case scenario.
