I was diagnosed with t1 when I was 10. I wasn't surprised I had it. Two of my cousins have it and so does my grandpa. I wasn't comfortable at first to put in my own insulin shots, but then I was able to do it. The good thing about having two other diabetic cousins is that we always test together and guess eachothers numbers. But I'm so great full that I had my family and background information from my cousins I couldn't thank them enough.

    Danica,
I have had diabetes now 47 plus years and am very grateful to Drs Banting and Best. Not to mention the first night I was in the hospital and had been given an insulin shot I did not have to get up once!!! Such joy! Crazy I know, but it made me so happy! In those days we had to use test tubes and measure our urine and then drop a tablet in and use a color chart to see where our sugar was. Things have progressed so very much.......

when i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes i was 16 which is really old to be diagnosed since the oldest age to be diagnosed usually is 14. like her i was also drinking a lot of water, and urinating every hour about, my blood sugar (in mg/dl which is what i think she was using) was about 880, to give a comparison for me i'm supposed to keep it about between 60 and 100. it got so bad my vision was being affected because my eyes were thinly glazed with sugar, before i knew what was going on i got glasses which surprisingly helped. At this point i knew something was wrong so my parents drove me to the hospital and i stayed over night with two catheters in my arms. Weirdly enough i didn't have keystones. My attitude was it sucked but i could have been worse and i was old enough to better deal with it. my vision returned, which made it weird explaining to people how my vision miraculously got better. and now i just fit diabetes into my routine and try to keep it under control.

      @morninglory30 8 лет назад +3

Hi. Wow 880, sorry you had such a bad time at diagnosis, and with your eyes. You can get diagnosed with Type 1 at any age, really. I was almost 15 and my Mom was 36 when she was diagnosed.

You are so cute, and have such a bubbly and positive attitude. I wish you the best in life. I turn 60 next month, and I have had diabetes since I was 12. All in all, I am doing well for having this insidious disease for so long. I do, however, have stage 3B kidney disease, but my nephrologist is hoping I can get another 5 or 6 years out of my kidneys. I was diagnosed back in 1972 - and I remember the week or two leading up to my diagnosis like it was yesterday, but it is a long story. We did not have all of the tools that we have today - blood meters, insulin pumps. I never minded shots, even when I was doing them 5 or 6 times a day. I have lived a good life, and diabetes has not kept me from doing anything that a “normal” person does. I have played sports my whole life, and am still very active. I have a couple of advanced degrees, and have a good job. I have travelled the world. I would have retired a few years ago, but I am uninsurable. I live a pretty healthy lifestyle - although I was not a disciplined diabetic during high school and college. I also think that all of the supplements that I took during my body building days hastened my kidney disease. I have been on an insulin pump for about 8 years now, and it has been a tremendous help. I have tried to remain positive my whole life, but it does get frustrating that sometimes no matter how hard you try, your blood sugars just do not cooperate. This is normal, you must not beat yourself up over it. I also never felt sorry for myself - I realized that this was the hand I was dealt, and I can either roll up and die, or make the best of it. Besides - I felt pretty fortunate, as a boy I knew that was a year younger than me was diagnosed with leukemia about a month before I was diagnosed, and a girl I was friends with was diagnosed with MS. I realized that there are always people that are worse off. The boy died a few years later at age 14. Good luck managing your diabetes - it can be a very frustrating disease. Keep up the good work, and never give up.

@@sardarafeed3057 Hi!! I hope you are doing well. I am still hanging in there. I have progressed to stage 4 - well, deep into stage 4. My EGFR has been as low as 17 a few times, and sometimes bounces back up to 21. Fatigue and muscle wasting are my biggest problems. I have lost a lot of weight and strength. I struggle to find the energy to do chores around the house. I still work fairly long hours, then take a nap after dinner, and usually get to the gym - not that that does much for me. All in all, other than fatigue, I feel pretty good. My 3 siblings, as well as a couple of friends, have offered to donate a kidney when the time comes. My sister is the best match, so we are just waiting for my kidneys to almost get to the point of failure, then do the transplant before I have to go on dialysis. How are things going with you? Great to hear from you.

I was diagnosed T1 last year, at 39yo and my experience was similar in that I was drinking a LOT, peeing a LOT and at one stage both at the same time. I was 450 when they tested me and there was talk of hospital but for some reason and I don't remember why I didn't end up there but I think the symptoms went away very quickly after starting on medication. This is still new to me hundreds of tests and insulin injections later, but a year on, its better, the first 6 months were traumatising.

Your a star it took over 6 yrs. for me to get diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. The doctors in Missouri only listen to schizophrenics. Schizophrenia is a mental illness where someone hears voices in their head. I spent my entire life in Diabetic Ketoacidosis. The reason why Type 1 Diabetes never got diagnosed is because my step brother Jacob paid a doctor to say there is no such thing as Type 1 Diabetes. He also paid several doctors to become apart of the Holocaust.

I have several disabilities and it comes from being born at 24 weeks early and also the symptoms I had were quite scary
      1) Excessive thirst
      2) Frequent Urination
      3) Bed wetting so bad that if I ever got up in the middle of the night to go pee, I would be getting up over 60 times a night.
      4) I was vomiting from hell.
I had the brain hemorrhage after birth and the stroke at age 2 and everyone thinks it is funny to say I deserve to die because I am a dwarf or I was born at 24 weeks early. Yes I was born at 24 weeks early and I have multiple health problems.

I need help. For the past couple weeks i have been extremely tired to the point where i have to be constantly moving to keep myself awake in school. For the past 4 or 5 days, i have been EXTREMELY thirsty. I have a 32 ounce water bottle and i am drinking about 6 of those every day, which is about 15 pounds of water per day. I have also had stomach aches, head aches, and i look a lot thinner. I told my mom but she just told me that "its just puberty and you are just being healthy with all the water" i dont know what to do, so if someone replied it would be great!

Hey! I'm also diabetic! I was diagnosed when I was 15 and it was funny, because I didn't feel sad or anything. I just thought: "ah... Ok...". My mom freaked out, though. My friends at school were also very suportive. They would get super excited with my "tecnological" diabetes stuff, such as glucometer and insuline pen, and some of them would insist on taking my blood sugar just for fun. Congratulations on your channel! Cheers from Brazil!

Well I found out when I was 8 years old, I'm 22 now. Anyways my story goes like this, I was having a really bad asthma attack and nearly died from it, they doctors put me on prednisone (a steriod) and by the time I was released I went home very weak and dehydrated, also urinating a lot, then I passed out, my mother rushed me to the hospital because she didnt know why I passed out. Then hours later the doctor told me and my mother I was a Type 1 Diabetic

Three months after my 12th birthday, (1970) I passed out in math class and went into a coma. I came to a day later and they told my mum and dad I wouldn't live to be 30. Back then, there were no meters or pumps. I used a huge, stainless steel syringe and tested my urine in a test tube with strips. I weighed 78 pounds. My doc said I may have gotten it from scarlet fever I got at Woodstock.

Oh, I had the same symptoms, but none of us (in my family) paid attention. I was diagnosed when I fainted in class and at the time I was only 6. Apparently I was knocked out for more than 20 hours and was taken by an ambulance to Children's Hospital. I stayed there for a month and a half, when I came back to school no one really talked to me. So, basically I was a loner (the girl with a "contagious" disease), so I had to move. I'm struggling with it now and I'm 13.

I was diagnosed at 19. I was on weight watchers (new years resolution) at the time, and was losing weight like crazy. I was like dang this diet is really working. Well I fell off the wagon at one point and noticed that I was still losing weight while eatting little debbie cakes. I had all the typical symptoms, extreme thirst, frequent urination ,and weight loss. I ended up losing 100lbs thinking it was weight watchers. I felt really off one day and just made a doctors appt and they did a finger stick and checked my blood sugar and it was over 600. The blood draw was in the 800s dont remember the exact number but with a 14 a1c

Insulin is good for lowering blood sugars to sustain life, not black seed oil. Exercise can however increase the effectiveness of insulin by around 30%.

I was diagnosed when I was 11, I had been sick but it was just water (wasn't surprised , all i drank for 3 weeks before was water) and I started falling asleep so my Mam asked my sister to test my blood sugar (she has T1 Diabetes aswell) and the moniter said was 333 + so then my mam told me to to a Keaton test and it turned bright purple.. I was in the hospital for a week and i had drips in me constantly. But I was proud cuz i was the only one who didnt need the docter to do my injections :P

I wish I could have caught mine early like you did. But unfortunately I went into a diabetic coma, and that's how I found out. Almost died. It was so scary. I also had lost a lot of weight and had all the same symptoms. Just didn't realize soon enough I guess.

ah! i was 14 when i found out. i also had no idea what diabetes was. my mom took me to the dr because i lost soo much weight.. when i was at the dr she said that its the style now (losing weight and drinking water). my mom made the dr to give me a blood test.. so i did. next morning the dr called my house super early and asked my dad if they could wake me..my mom got on the phone and started asking what he meant if they could wake me up... the dr was mean and said "do you understand that your daughters blood sugar is 956 and she could go into a coma" . my came and she woke me up... when i woke up she said that the have to go to the dr again because they needed to retake my blood...... so i took a shower and got ready.. the car ride there my parents explained to me that we are going to the hospital because i have diabetes i said ok but it will go away... when we finally got to the hospital the dr walked in and said ok listen you have diabetes and this will bring your family together or it will tare it apart! now i thought that this so call diabetes was going to make my parents get a divorces because of me! but thank god for my mom that she noticed something was wrong!!

This is my first comment on RUclips....been trying for a while :-(>.
I'd have been like, "why don't you sit in a wheelchair." Cool you want to be diabetes educator. I wanted to be a nurse 35 years ago after I'd had diabetes a few years. It would have been a good career. I remember the sadness and overwhelmededness at age 15 coming back from the hospital. Testing urine, keeping an inflexible routine not, low carb. I don't remember hypo symptoms ever. One shot a day. Why did they say I could have a normal life? The "15 things I like about diabetes" video blog was so positive. I like being safe. I like that sporting accomplishments are more impressive. I like that we are the first to be helped by genetic engineering. I like that a cure worth more than a lottery win is possible someday.

I was 4 when I was diagnosed and I am 13 now. When i got diagnosed I was in preschool and I had a lot of the same symptoms like drinking a lot of water and going to the bathroom a lot. I also lost a lot of weight and I was really skinny. One night in December I woke up in the middle of the night and I was sick and I was throwing up. My parents knew something was wrong so my dad took me to the hospital. When we got there we were in a room and they checked my blood sugar and I was over 700 and I was really sick and I was dehydrated. It was like a small hospital so I needed to be taken to a bigger hospital and my dad was going to drive me but the doctor said that I was to sick and I needed to get there quickly so I had to be air lifted by helicopter to a children's hospital. I remember that I was crying because in the helicopter it was really uncomfortable because I was strapped down and they were trying to get an IV started but I had really small arms and they kept having to poke me and at the time I was really scared of needles and shots. When we got to the hospital my dad was already there and they pushed me to a room right away.I was in the intensive Care Unit. When I was in the room they finally got the IV in my arm.I remember that I was trying to fall asleep but there was an alarm and when ever I would move my IV it would go off and the nurse would come in my room. The nurse also came in the room and woke me up to check my BG every hour. I was also really thirsty but they wouldn't let me have anything to drink and they wouldn't let me eat anything. My parents stayed in the room with me but whenever they left I would cry because I didn't want them to leave.I was in the intensive care unit for 2 days and then I was moved to another floor.I remember a lot of people came to visit me and they gave me stuffed animals and stuff. The life flight people that air lifted me visited me in the hospital and they gave me a life flight tee- shirt. It was in December around Christmas so Santa also visited me.We had all these educators that were teaching my parents how to give me shots since I was really young. They were also teaching us what diabetes was. I got a teddy bear that had different colored patches on all the places that you can give shots and it had a little diabetes bracelet on it. I was in the hospital for 5 days. I was on shots until I was 7 and then I got a pump.

23.1 * 18 = 415.8. They measure it to the first number I would believe. So I guess they would say their sugar is 415

I just got diagnosed at 43 a late age for it but happens. I had a uti but they found sugar in my urine and blood sugar was 298. I went the doctor and they did tests. This confirmed it. I use an insulin pen which isn’t too painful.

complete bullshit. Had literally one 30min session where I was educated on stuff during that whole week.
Should have just done that first, give me a meter and pens and send me home.
