  • Forty years ago Type 2 Diabetes wasn't heard of... now our health systems are overwhelmed with patients on dialysis, having amputations, and losing their sight. What has changed and why are we becoming sick? Ropata Adams-Walker put his health on the back-burner, but with a seventh child on the way he's ready to face a diabetes test and get his health back on track. Brian Kairau was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes sixteen years ago. He's on dialysis and is facing losing his foot.

    Great doco. I think it might help if people had access to their traditional diets (for Pacific people, that’s lots of seafood, greens and taro), or adapted to a low-cost Mediterranean-style diet. You don’t want to replace a $1 pie with a lettuce. You want to replace it with a big place of brown rice, beans and a tasty sauce. But I get that pies and burgers are way more convenient.

He was never diagnosed with any form of diabetes, heart/liver/kidner failure, high blood pressure, etc.. He always had a balanced diet growing up and honestly I look up to him for that. Sadly, I can't say the same with my nana (his wife). My parent's also are diagnosed with diabetes. This need to stop. It's not just sugary food, but also fatty processed meat too.

    I am 100% insulin resistant. If I am lucky I eat one meal a day because when this genetic disorder hit me it took my appetite right with the angels flew right out of my stomach! I do not eat too much of anything I'm vegan and if I'm going to eat a large meal it's going to be mostly Whole Foods. I voice type so that came up like the store but I mean the other. I have full body nerve damage and the pain that goes with it but not from diabetes. That comes from years and years of not knowing I was seriously B12 deficient and not because I was vegan because I wasn't vegan then. It's because of intrinsic factor. I had a toe amputated my large toe on my left foot but that was because I tripped on a coffee table and the knuckle exploded had nothing to do with my state of health I'm in pretty good health considering this genetic disorder and what it brings with it!

    It isn't true that protein is converted into glucose. During the absorptive state after a meal, amino acids are converted only into fat or are used for energy. Only during fasting, protein is used for glucose production to keep a stable blood sugar.

    The key to beating it is to get rid of refined carbohydrates, and starchy veggies, and you need to track macros and calories eaten, plus add strength training and cardio. Muscle is a depository for sugar, plus gaining muscle increases metabolism. cardio burns off massive amounts of calories.

    Dude...you live on a lush, tropical island but you lack veggies? In Idaho, we have about three months to grow food, it's a desert, and the soil sucks, yet we can get seeds for cheap and grow a good deal of food on a very small bit of land. When I lived in Hawaii, did I pay 7$ for a mango from Mexico or did I walk a few blocks to pick one off of a landscape tree? Did I buy papaya at Walmart or pick them off the shade trees in the parking lot? Had I owned any land, I would have planted it, but even if not, there are parks and all kinds of random places to guerilla garden. It's not that difficult when you have all the warmth, sunshine, rain, and red dirt you could imagine surrounding you.

      Indoor Orchids and Tropicals
      Dude.. get your facts straight before making, ignorant condescending comment's like that. New Zealand is not a tropical Island, very far from it. It can get very, very cold in the winter (below 0 degrees C) especially in the south island where it snows. In places it doesn't get much above 20 C in the summer.
      Since you have all the answers and you so much smarter than we are, why don't you provide us with some instructions on how to grow Mangoes and Papaya in a "random guerrilla garden" when it's snowing!

    • @Suite_annamite
      @Suite_annamite 6 лет назад +5

      *The tropics are full of stuff that's either poison or poison in large doses.*
      Also, some people who live in the tropics have not yet adapted and are still allergic to everything around them.
      All of these disadvantages - on top of a cultural apathy about their own cuisine - all add up to what's happening there now.

My hemoglobin A1c went from 12.5 to 5.1. And his remained in that area between 5.1 and 6.2 my blood sugars are usually very good and when they're not I can't explain it. Because I may not have had my oats and my dinner that day but it's high the next morning fasting. I have many other health problems that have nothing to do with this but if any doctor happens to see this I need to know what's going on because my doctors in Boston have not told me and I am in the New England Journal of Medicine repeatedly my hair skin nails fat cells are in labs around the world they are growing my skin by the yard they have at least found out which Gene it's on the problem but it's been 30 years since I've spoken to them and they ruined my life for 13 years with their research on me. This may sound insensitive or uncaring but everyone knows that obseity is linked to type 2 diabetes and people with families who suffer from it should be aware to stay healthy keep a good diet but yet they continue with these eating habits and the cycle continues of being diagnosed with this disease over eating isn't fun and it doesn't make life better it makes you look like you don't have control over what your health means to you and once you get this disease it's permanent and then regret sets in after the fact we should stay vigilant and beat these statistics so we can remain healthy and live a longer life without all these medications

      @@gerardt3284 It's easier said than done. Unfortunately, eating disorders and food addictions are much more common than we think. The lot of us take no excuses from food addicts, all while failing to realize that overcoming a food addiction is no different from overcoming a drug addiction. The only difference is that most drug addictions are clear as day, while food addictions hide underneath the basic human necessity for food consumption. Treating most addictions needs therapy, which is virtually nonexistent (if not astronomically expensive) for food addicts.

      @@anawkwardsweetpotato4728 Exactly. That is why it's useless to judge an obese person. These judgements are from people who have never had an obesity problem. Physiologically, an obese person is different from a person of normal weight. Obese people have high levels of insulin and hardly any leptin and peptide YY to signal that they are full, so they over eat. When you're overweight, it takes a whole lot of will power to fight against what your body wants. Can it be done? Yes. Should it be done? For ones health, yes. But it is a HARD struggle.
      Then there is the environment. The problem is that process foods and foods with a lot of sugar are a lot more ubiquitous and cheaper. The food environment is important because for a person who does want to lose weight and get healthy, not only do they have to battle their biology, they also have to battle an environment where they are surrounded by high carb, high sugar, process foods that are cheap (which is important because economic interest is usually the first concern), convenient, and everywhere. That is why there is a push for government intervention and regulations.
      People who have never been that big will never understand the struggle. All they think is that all they have to do is stop being lazy and gluttonous when actually so many obese people have tried for YEARS to take off weight and keep it off just for them to put it back on.

      ant, because type 2 is a product of lifestyle and overconsumption of processed foods. Type 1 diabetes is more related to mothers who feed their babies cows milk. The proteins in cows milk is almost identical to the pancreatic beta cells of the infant, so when the cows milk stimulates an immune response in the child, its cells go to kill the cows milk proteins, they then turn on the pancreatic beta cells and destroy them so the child turns type 1.
      Point being, type 2 is easily curable. Type 1... well the dairy industry won't let people know they're causing type 1 diabetes in their own children.

    • @tarag7292
      @tarag7292 2 года назад +1

      That is very wrong and very outdated information. Yes, fat is causing people to get fat, but you have to bring in the physiology of it. Fat from fatty foods isn't what causes obesity and diabetes. It's the sugar and carbs in that food.
      When you are always eating carbs and sugar, you get an excess of it in the blood. And if the body can't use it all for energy, the liver converts that sugar into fat in a process called liponeogenesis. Then the insulin, the fat storage hormone, takes that fat and stores it in the fat cells.
      An obsese person's diet consist mostly of carbs, sugar, and processed foods so their body is always working overtime to convert that food into fat which keeps the insulin high.
      So does fat causes a person to get fat? Yes, technically, but it's not so simple. It depends on WHAT FOODS that fat is coming from and what the body does with that food that makes the person fat.
