As a Polynesian, I think that we must take responsibility for our own life. I hail from a household of ten kids. During the 1950s, my parents were working class (Dad was a wharfie, Mum was a factory worker). They took charge of ensuring that we ate well by prioritising the money and purchasing high-quality food. Organic veggies were given from Dad's vegetable garden. Instead of going to the local shop on weekends, we went to fruit farms to get less expensive fruit. Mothers' weekend baking provided delicious family delights. My parents were responsible not just for our health but also for our education, and while I watched other Polynesian families choose the easy route, which frequently resulted in poor health and children in need, my parents chose faced the challenges. They were our role models for life. We're now in our 70s and 80s, and we've avoided ill health and developed great careers because to our parents' hard work, dedication, and commitment to family. We have witnessed our children and grandkids grow into exceptional people who realise that challenges are a part of life and that through those struggles, character and strength become your stronghold. IT IS IS TO BE IT'S UP TO ME.

I cannot agree with you more! Low carb diet is the way to beat Diabetes. I been a T1D for 23 years and still complication free. I dont eat more than 8 g of carb per meal. Keto is not very healthy though if you dont consume enough protein.
@@pickledrick5158 I eat blueberries, blue cheese and lots of sardines also. At least a can of mixed nuts a week. My blood pressure is 105 over 70 and I eat sea salt with every meal and with my coffee everyday.
Diabetes runs in my family. I’m so blessed to have the knowledge and resources to live a healthy lifestyle. So, I decided a long time ago many years ago in my life to eat healthy, exercise regularly and sleep regularly with properly managing stress. I’m never getting diabetes. I will prevent it.
It takes time to eat healthy. It takes a family commitment to prepare healthy meals. It takes parents saying "no" to spending money on unhealthy foods. And it takes a return to eating food the way God made it, not fake food.
the issue is once you start processing the hell out of it, that robs pretty much any nutritional value. I lost a family member to type 2 she drank her self to death with "mountain dew" and yes she did have her legs chopped off a few months later she was gone.. it happened real fast too no one even knew tell it was too late for her another issue is that guys family is enabled his Diabetes.. he should have lost 75-100 pounds being on a hospital diet for 5 months he was there. in hospitals they Don't give you very much 3 meals day, the foods they give you is designed to lose weight while you are there. that is how they are configured ( on the basis that most people are fat ) it's about 700 cal a day at the most . basically his family killed him.. the hospital should have BANNED his family from being there . or at least banned them from bring any outside foods not approved by doctors
People can say all they want about unhealthy foods being cheaper than healthier alternatives, or that it is time consuming to cook proper food, but people've got to realize that what might seem like the cheapest option when you're comparing prices at the store or cafe, won't necessarily be that cheap in the long run when you've got to pay your medical bills for your lost foot, missing teeth, potentially lost ability to work and ultimately your life. I know times are rough when money is tight, but if you can't invest a little bit in your health, you're most likely going to be quite miserable most of the time. A failing body makes it hard to enjoy anything because of endless worrying and pain, not to forget that it is more or less impossible to be there for the people you care about. So take care of yourselves before it is too late, your wellbeing is more important than you think! Wish you all the best!

4:12 I grew up in the 1970s and can literally count on the fingers of one hand the times we went to McDonald's. There was one that was walking distance, we just didn't go more than a very very few times. We just didn't have the concept of going there as a regular thing. I did, however, take a summer art class at the art academy downtown that was a good couple hours bus and walking to go to, and I was given money to get a Whopper at Burger King each day I went, and that Whopper supported a lot of walking, bus-riding, and doing the art stuff too for the day. It's funny too because much later as an adult I was making a go at being a "professional amateur" athlete and again the Burger King Whopper became a mainstay; one of those a day and I could skimp out on breakfast and dinner.
Our family also did not eat fast food in the 70s. We had home made lunches. I was made fun of for being "poor" turns out mom knew what she was doing! Thanx mom . 😊

These people always have eaten big portions, its cultural. ..But with traditional foods it was no problem. Because they had to work harder to obtaine it. Lots of home grown vegetable and fruits ..but also fresh fish and an occasional celebrated roasted pig from ground ovens. Now its most sugars and processed foods. What the big guy said in the end..its all convienent foods. They became lazy. Because traditional foods take more time and efford. If they want to survive this epidemic ..they have to go back to the old way's. And tis is a lesson for us all ..not only pacific Islanders (maori) Of what i think are the most beautifull people in the world. Its a shame to see what they have become. They dont need to tell the children, because they dont listen anyway....You need to show them ..children will copy. I hope they will overcome this problem.
"There's more fast food in the low socioeconomic areas" maybe these days. When I was a teen we lived in a lot socioeconomic area and I only remember an A&W Root Beer (and burgers and fries) place for miles and miles. There was a local burger place called "Grinders" miles the other way, and if you went further past the A&W, in the tiny town of Kahuku there was a little burger place across from the high school, and then in Hale'iwa there were some local saimin (kind of like a poor person's ramen) places. Lots of Samoan immigrants and they were poor, we all were. Cooking at home was the thing.

We eat for energy. Sugar which is what our bodies need for energy (glucose) is the scapegoat. Sad that you missed the opportunity to clarify what you mean by 'sugar' (ex. fruit contains sugar). And outrageous that the real culprit -too much fat in the diet, and vegetable oils specifically, was not mentioned. Fat blocks uptake of glucose and keeps it in the blood which causes all the symptoms. This was proven decades ago. Go deeper and treat the cause not the symptoms if you really want to effect wide reaching change. Health, gratitude and joy to all.
Sorry I can't agree with the old fellas comment near the end that he had no other choice and that because of economics he bought sugar or calorie deficient food. I get his point but it's sending a message to young people that it's our of there control as too what they choose to buy. Not true, there is no price too high to pay for health. Spend it on fruit not chocolate or processed sugar, may in some cases be a little higher in price but it's better habit for young people. A healthy young person is more active in mind and I believe will find ways to prosper in good health. It's not more expensive. An apple is under 50 cents. Can't get a candy bar or a bag of chips/crisps for that. It's just about convenience and a preference for the sweet, fattening tastes.
We constantly see tv ads tempting us to buy unhealthy foods, walk in to stores and it's right there, as you leave the store again your tempted to buy something unhealthy, drive home and you see McDonald's hungry jacks Red rooster Kfc, it hard to see a healthy store, at parties or celebrations you usually see unhealthy foods, Easter time we see Easter eggs etc, temptations are everywhere. Bad food is really the silent killer for us all.

For diabeitan whose blood sugar cannot be stabilized, how can what you say happen? If your blood sugar level is too low because of fasting, do you think that you can still be alive?
if you want to live and spend more time with your family then you should be willing to put the time in, I cook with my children it might take 30min or 1hour but I'm investing in my life and theirs, it's about educating your children not convenient that's just lazy and a sad excuse, forgive me if i hurt your feelings but if you really want to live that's where you start. all the best

As an individual, when the choice is between "dying by inches" versus paying extra on your weekly/monthly food bill, you bet your _life_ that healthy food is worth the price. When the choice is the weight of your children's casket on your shoulder, versus spending time with them, and teaching them what and how you to eat, you'd _better_ make the time! The 20 extra minutes you spend packing a lunch or fixing a meal are _hell_ of a lot better than the same minutes spent in the dialysis ward... No argument there. However, however, however... If you think that the entirety of the blame rests on the individual, then you have hearts of iron with no compassion. If you want to tear other people down to stroke yourself off, then that's a _great_ strategy. But if you're actually losing sleep over these issues, and want to make the world a better place, and want to be part of the solution, then _listen_ to people's problems and what obstacles they face. No you probably can’t afford healthy foods when eaten in huge quantities as you would with crap foods, but you won’t need it anyway. All I hear is one excuse after another. So you're telling me that these people cannot, because of the country they live in, eat apples or drink water? They can't eat roasted carrots + onions mixed with Raman noodles MINUS THE SODIUM RICH FLAVOR PACKET? That's a perfectly healthy option which is very cheap. Yes! It is extremely hard + takes discipline to change eating habits but it CAN be done. Any doctor would be tickled to death to work with a patient who wants to break the cycle early when they're 10 pounds overweight instead of waiting till their limbs are being chopped off! Are there no bicycles in that country? I was about 18 lbs overweight and was having chest pains one night and went to hospital and was told my cholesterol was a whopping 450 (no that isn't a typo). Then my sister died of a brain aneurysm at the ripe old age of 52-she spent the last 2 years of her life unable to even go to the bathroom by herself, all because she lived her life on fast food + cigarettes! That was my wake up call + I said I was gonna break our family cycle of laziness and unhealthy food choices. I always joke + say our family motto is "A meal is a terrible thing to waste". I swim 6 days a week and I ride my bicycle to the gym, round trip it is 3 miles. I DO eat fish so I'm not completely vegetarian but the main staples of my diet are fruit, vegetables, grains + nuts (ALOT of almonds).I use ramen noodles for alot of dishes without the seasoning package. Quit smoking. The HARDEST THING TO GIVE UP IS THE SOFTDRINKS.. i'll admit it. My weight has been at 115 for over a year. But 2 years later my total cholesterol is 186 and my LDL is wait for it.. 83, baby! 👏 I just cannot believe that this country had no access to bicycles + fruit + walking trails + healthy food.
I don't believe you can cure it or reverse it. What you are actually doing is managing it. Going back to bad food and lack of exercise you will be right back where you were. People ask me about mine and I am honest in my response. I will have it the rest of my life. I am just managing it. This keeps me focused and motivated to keep eating healthy and exercising.
Type 2 and even some Type 1 diabetics have absolutely been cured! The answer is a diet solely plant based and consistent exercise. There are many programs to teach people how to eat properly for their disease. Amazing results have been achieved with these plant based diets. However, the key to success with these types of eating plansis is committment & consi stency to a vegan way of life....forever!
There’s a lot of whining and passing the buck in this video. We live in a free society where people are allowed to choose to eat whatever they want. Business are allowed to open wherever they can and sell whatever kind of delicious food they want. It’s not the fault of fast food, or the junk food sold in supermarkets that people are fat. People are fat because they are eating too much. It’s the responsibility of each individual to take care of their health to the best of their ability. But the commitment to do so must be there. And the self control must be there. Both of these things seem to be missing in a lot of people today.
Nobody is giving them these skills as children. We need to teach prevention. But, the businesses don't like that. They suppress the information because it hurts their bottom line. It's the businesses fault.
10% of type 2 diabetics are NOT overweight - there can be a genetic component just like in type 1. (So if 10 mil ppl have type 2, 1 mil of them got it because of genetics) its a complicated issue and while diet can play a big part it is not the only part.. sad the guy diet but the sad fact is even if the son spent the rest of his days eating and exercising he would still have a 50/50 chance of getting diabetes.
They do not look fat from outside, but they have fat organs and fat in their muscles! Type I diabetics is not genetic but from cow milk in infant formula fed to infants!
Its not the governments fault neither the fast food industry. Its the individuals fault and weakness. I have money and i wouldnt eat fast food everyday look abuse and ugly, on occasions i can have it once a month, be healthy and exercise the whole month and that can be like a treat. I rather buy a beef steak with some veg yes it's expensive and takes time to cooks, no excuses you can make eggs with a brown slice of bread. The population needs to take care of themselves and STOP blaming others. UK sugary drink tax is there and on cigarette, alcohol but people still have them. Can the government change the individuals mental state? I dont think so. Its like saying pay ur rent first before u eat, they seem to be doing that one right or else homelessness. I always take my lunch and snack to college, university, work, appointments, when visiting family, friends, i don't eat influences.
I don't know.. part of me sympathizes with the notion that what goes on around us is to blame but at the same time we need to take responsibility for what we put into our bodies. It is not as if you do not notice the side effects yourself. You get a direct output of what you put in. The biggest issue here is misinformation. We have lost the desire to seek the truth. We've become lazy not only in what we eat & how we eat but far greater than that. We've become lazy in terms of our seeking out of information. PEOPLE do your research. Don't just take everything as truth, know that there are large industries behind products! Sugar is NOT the ONLY issue, yes it is part of the issue BUT what it truly is, is the consumption of FATTY PRODUCTS. Dairy & meat are very high in fat content! It is the FAT that coats that blood vessels preventing them from being able to absorb sugar from blood. Honestly, the research doesn't lie. STOP sitting back and take control of your life and your decisions. Make INFORMED ones!!!
M F Yes I agree. It sucks to work all day, run errands, get the kids, and then make a homemade meal from healthy, nutritious ingredients every single day. I’m exhausted, but I do it because I love my family and I want to be around to see them grow. There’s so much advertising and lobbying out there because unhealthy, processed food is hugely profitable business. Rather than using advertising as a guide to eating, you need to research what really is good for us. And honestly, that information hasn’t really changed much - there’s been lots of noise about following this particular diet or that one - but if you just eat vegetables, fruits, some lean meats and whole grains, you’ll be doing well. If you do that and maintain a decent exercise level, you are treating yourself with respect and will be healthy. If you run into problems, then it’s your responsibility to go get your health checked. It’s tough. It’s inconvenient. We’d all love a pill that will allow us to eat all that tasty stuff out there and remain in perfect health, but that’s not going to happen - ever. We need to educate ourselves and our children to make good food choices. Interestingly, if you eat a good and balanced diet long enough, you find that the cheap, sugary, processed foods don’t taste very good and aren’t worth eating.

Go deeper and treat the cause not the symptoms if you really want to effect wide reaching change.

Sorry I can't agree with the old fellas comment near the end that he had no other choice and that because of economics he bought sugar or calorie deficient food. I get his point but it's sending a message to young people that it's our of there control as too what they choose to buy. Not true, there is no price too high to pay for health. Spend it on fruit not chocolate or processed sugar, may in some cases be a little higher in price but it's better habit for young people. A healthy young person is more active in mind and I believe will find ways to prosper in good health. Good health and active mind go together better choice making, more brighter minds.. better job prospects and getting hired for employment or sportsman and women to one day support good health for themselves.... benefits are way higher...and if you don't have enough to buy good food, save it up go without, not going to kill you and guess what you'll even lose some weight while saving money!! see, can't lose!!
It's not more expensive. An apple is under 50 cents. Can't get a candy bar or a bag of chips/crisps for that. It's just about convenience and a preference for the sweet, fattening tastes.
We constantly see tv ads tempting us to buy unhealthy foods, walk in to stores and it's right there, as you leave the store again your tempted to buy something unhealthy, drive home and you see McDonald's hungry jacks Red rooster Kfc, it hard to see a healthy store, at parties or celebrations you usually see unhealthy foods, Easter time we see Easter eggs etc, temptations are everywhere. Bad food is really the silent killer for us all.

The 20 extra minutes you spend packing a lunch or fixing a meal are _hell_ of a lot better than the same minutes spent in the dialysis ward... No argument there.

If you want to tear other people down to stroke yourself off, then that's a _great_ strategy. But if you're actually losing sleep over these issues, and want to make the world a better place, and want to be part of the solution, then _listen_ to people's problems and what obstacles they face.

Yes! It is extremely hard + takes discipline to change eating habits but it CAN be done. Any doctor would be tickled to death to work with a patient who wants to break the cycle early when they're 10 pounds overweight instead of waiting till their limbs are being chopped off!

I was about 18 lbs overweight and was having chest pains one night and went to hospital and was told my cholesterol was a whopping 450 (no that isn't a typo).
Then my sister died of a brain aneurysm at the ripe old age of 52-she spent the last 2 years of her life unable to even go to the bathroom by herself, all because she lived her life on fast food + cigarettes!
That was my wake up call + I said I was gonna break our family cycle of laziness and unhealthy food choices.
I always joke + say our family motto is "A meal is a terrible thing to waste".
I swim 6 days a week and I ride my bicycle to the gym, round trip it is 3 miles.
I DO eat fish so I'm not completely vegetarian but the main staples of my diet are fruit, vegetables, grains + nuts (ALOT of almonds).I use ramen noodles for alot of dishes without the seasoning package. Quit smoking.
The HARDEST THING TO GIVE UP IS THE SOFTDRINKS.. i'll admit it. My weight has been at 115 for over a year.

I've read many posts, not here, where people have reversed type 2 diabetes. So in this case, is there a point at which it can't be reversed ?
I don't believe you can cure it or reverse it. What you are actually doing is managing it. Going back to bad food and lack of exercise you will be right back where you were. People ask me about mine and I am honest in my response. I will have it the rest of my life. I am just managing it. This keeps me focused and motivated to keep eating healthy and exercising.
Type 2 and even some Type 1 diabetics have absolutely been cured! The answer is a diet solely plant based and consistent exercise. There are many programs to teach people how to eat properly for their disease. Amazing results have been achieved with these plant based diets. However, the key to success with these types of eating plansis is committment & consi stency to a vegan way of life....forever!

There’s a lot of whining and passing the buck in this video. We live in a free society where people are allowed to choose to eat whatever they want. Business are allowed to open wherever they can and sell whatever kind of delicious food they want. It’s not the fault of fast food, or the junk food sold in supermarkets that people are fat. People are fat because they are eating too much. It’s the responsibility of each individual to take care of their health to the best of their ability. But the commitment to do so must be there. And the self control must be there. Both of these things seem to be missing in a lot of people today.
Nobody is giving them these skills as children. We need to teach prevention. But, the businesses don't like that. They suppress the information because it hurts their bottom line. It's the businesses fault.

10% of type 2 diabetics are NOT overweight - there can be a genetic component just like in type 1. (So if 10 mil ppl have type 2, 1 mil of them got it because of genetics) its a complicated issue and while diet can play a big part it is not the only part.. sad the guy diet but the sad fact is even if the son spent the rest of his days eating and exercising he would still have a 50/50 chance of getting diabetes.
They do not look fat from outside, but they have fat organs and fat in their muscles! Type I diabetics is not genetic but from cow milk in infant formula fed to infants!

Its not the governments fault neither the fast food industry. Its the individuals fault and weakness. I have money and i wouldnt eat fast food everyday look abuse and ugly, on occasions i can have it once a month, be healthy and exercise the whole month and that can be like a treat. Don't just take everything as truth, know that there are large industries behind products! Sugar is NOT the ONLY issue, yes it is part of the issue BUT what it truly is, is the consumption of FATTY PRODUCTS. Dairy & meat are very high in fat content! It is the FAT that coats that blood vessels preventing them from being able to absorb sugar from blood. Honestly, the research doesn't lie. STOP sitting back and take control of your life and your decisions. Make INFORMED ones!!!
M F Yes I agree. It sucks to work all day, run errands, get the kids, and then make a homemade meal from healthy, nutritious ingredients every single day. I’m exhausted, but I do it because I love my family and I want to be around to see them grow.
There’s so much advertising and lobbying out there because unhealthy, processed food is hugely profitable business. Rather than using advertising as a guide to eating, you need to research what really is good for us. And honestly, that information hasn’t really changed much - there’s been lots of noise about following this particular diet or that one - but if you just eat vegetables, fruits, some lean meats and whole grains, you’ll be doing well. If you do that and maintain a decent exercise level, you are treating yourself with respect and will be healthy. If you run into problems, then it’s your responsibility to go get your health checked.
It’s tough. It’s inconvenient. We’d all love a pill that will allow us to eat all that tasty stuff out there and remain in perfect health, but that’s not going to happen - ever. We need to educate ourselves and our children to make good food choices. Interestingly, if you eat a good and balanced diet long enough, you find that the cheap, sugary, processed foods don’t taste very good and aren’t worth eating.
