Newsnight has been told by a source on Labour's ruling body, the National Executive Committee, that the new total figure is 576,000.
That would surpass the increase seen during the 2015 leadership contest.
The latest rise in numbers has been driven by the race to succeed Jeremy Corbyn, with the ballot to replace him opening on 21 February.
The last recorded high was in December 2017, where the total number reached 567,400. The party experienced a gradual decrease in membership numbers from 2018 onwards.
This trend only slowly started to be arrested as the general election approached but has reversed quickly in the weeks following.
All of these new members, so long as they joined before 20 January, will be able to vote in the party's upcoming leadership and deputy leadership contest.

last surge in membership elected Corbyn.. all you need to know about who is joining and why..
Tories seeking to make labour unelectable?
My god, this is like a paid advertisement for the Labour Party.
How is it?
Why were faces smudged, is it that embarrassing being a Labour member... Oh and is 'Continuity' the new name for 'Momentum', oh dear, chilling.....
None of them could run a small business, never mind the UK.
I support labour, but don't have much hope for any of these candidates, they seem to have ignored why it was that we lost the election.
I’ve recently joined the Labour Party ( having ridiculed my father and grandfather in the past) I got fed up of shouting at the TV news most evenings. Our political system does not work without a meaningful opposition party and not having one has cost us most dearly.
Doesn't matter what they do - they're out for the next 10 years. People aren't adverse to socialist economics - people hated the privatisation of Royal Mail. Etc. But the identity politics and liberalism is icky.
I couldn`t care who they choose I`ll never vote for them again
AS A LIFE LONG LABOR VOTER, I CAN'T SUPPORT ANY OF THE CHOICES. THE LABOUR PARTY IS DEAD!
Calm down mate, they'll win in an election cycle or two
And Corbyn killed it!
@@jimjoerobinson no they won't
Nothing there for you? Sounds like you're the dead one. Sorry, DEAD ONE
CAPS LOCK WANKER!
A surge in membership comprised of Tories joining to vote in the biggest no hoper into Corbyns job. Looking at the line-up, they needn’t have bothered!
It worked eventually we all voted for Corbyn I’m hopeful Lady Nugee makes late run
Labour will not see power in my lifetime and I’m 56.
The bbc fights back with a huge image of a red Britain 🤣
LOL
The BBC tries to convince us the Labour leadership contest is interesting.
Boris got the ball rolling for Brexit and Corbyn put the ball in the goal! I’m just luvin it! Labour Party members think long on this and get sorted!
The labour party can have as many members as it wants, but if the electorate don't vote for you, it's meaningless. Mind you all those lovely subscriptions will keep the secretariat of the party, their mates and their mates mates in jobs and champagne.
Let them count membership for decades to come, if it is not converted into winning election, what is the point of a £20 membership? The Labour leadership is in a deep state of delusion.
Beaconsfield members are trendy young things aren’t they? Average age 63.
Lmao I'm doubting this.
So 180 new members and perhaps 20 in the room deciding who the CLP will endorse? I wonder how the other 160 Tory voters, who joined to mess up the outcome, will vote in the Leadership election? Obviously K Starmer is the BBC choice judging by the boost they are giving him.
As a leftist I would also vote for starmer. You have to appeal to a broad base to be elected and starmer fits the bill ,but, and it's a big BUT, we now need to get away from identity politics and accept Brexit to get a large section of our core vote back. We were to expansive with policies at the last election. Stick to six. Hammer them home day after day. Don't get mired in the trans issues, toxic feminism, Palestine- israel etc etc etc. Consentrate on fighting globalisation. Reducing non skilled immigration, N.H.S. more radical thoughts on getting us less reliant on the financial sector. Free education for all. Electing more working class prospective M.P.'s and getting away from P.P.S's being put forward nationalising the railway sector. Ending the nanny state. Stop telling us what is bad for us, smoking , booze, gambling etc. We are sick of your preaching. Do the main things like improving minimum wage. The working class is sick of being preached to by the middle class. Please shut the fuck up. Your preaching within the bubble. We are not listening to that crap anymore
I think you've nailed it there mate.
Clowns every single one of them 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's all about Lisa Nandy for me
Proud to say my CLP nominated Nandy, but as it stands, I have no problem with a Keir leadership.
I agree
She’s the best choice and Starmer is also good
@pammens miss I'm not.
God this lot couldn't organise a booze up in a brewery
Workington is a Conservative seat.
Who's joining. Not more from the radical left I hope. We need a more center left Labour to fight the bad ideas of the Tories.
Fake news
Excellent bit of journalism, getting out and talking to people to find the story!
I only watch this to see what the latest lies are.
It’s likely all lies
V.O.M.I.T.
Still dead in Scotland 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
And the North of England....Plus the Midlands and Wales.
PMSL the last time this happened Labour membership was £3.00 massive amounts of Tories Joined to vote for the candidate least likely to win. They the put up the fee to £25.00 to stop this happening. Seems to me we have bigger pockets than thought, I have already made my deposit, however I think any of the candidates are onto a loser.
hee hee I was one of those £3 members - didn't realise we had been found out hahahaha. No way am I paying £25 just to meddle in their numbers....
Abolish the BBC.
And not a single working class person among them!
I have a nasty feeling this is going to be a big mistake
My gut tells me Lisa Nandy is more likely to win back the seats we lost than Sir Kier Starmer
Labour lost in large part because of its pro remain stance, even though Corbyn was by nature a brexiter. It was in large part Starmer who was responsible for the main policy responsible for Labour’s defeat. Lisa Nandy however is not tainted by the stain of this, having said from day one Labour had to go through with brexit after the referendum.
These new members joining the party, they are not representative of the views of the people Labour needs to win back
I like Starmer, I think he would make a great PM, but I think Sir Kier Starmer might be viewed as being exactly the kind of London metropolitan elite the voters Labour needs have rejected
Even though ironically of course so is Johnson
pammens miss racist eh?
Definitely Conservatives to vote in a hard left labour leader.
Anyone who condemns the Israeli government, the Saudi ruling family, Donald Trump, Boris "buffoon" Johnson, the DUP, Numpty Farage and his gang of racists and many more to the waste bin will get my vote.
true progressives good for them
Rebecca Long Bailey
It's always old people voting for labour. I was told a working man votes for labour.
That was till 2016 when I had enough off the country.
Boomers and Xers overwhelmingly vote Tory. You have no idea what you are talking about.
@@shamanahaboolist yeah ok, you ovs no nothing..
@@paulg8394 70% of Boomers that voted, voted Tory you goon. Look at the numbers.
@@shamanahaboolist what website did you get those bullshit statistics.
Stop talking crab and behave yourself, the uk population no nearly every old person and people over 45 vote labour.
As the general rule is, if you work you vote labour. That as always been said in the uk.
Times have changed were we the country has had enough off labour shutting on it's people.
Hence brexit........
You had enough off the country by 2016? Well at least you're not sponging anymore.
TRASH BBC. SHUT IT DOWN
