There is also the option to see the song as either a comment on music as a connection for people of all sorts. It flies in the ether and means different things to different people as shown quite vividly by how those people "use" their radios. Also it cannot be held down. That latter part makes me think this might be even more general in that ideas instead of music are meant. It ties in with an old german song "Die Gedanken sind frei" (thoughts are free) and they can't be contained or captured. Since that song is learnt by every german in school it would be typical for Rammstein to reference this.
A third explanation of the borders and fences lyrics is that the music they listened to in secret on the shortwave allowed for them a brief time to transcend the borders and fences and feel part of the world they were not allowed to visit or see. It ties into the "meine ohren werden augen" line in the chorus.

Impressive recession! I grew up in East Berlin. listening to western radio was forbidden, but the government couldn't technically prevent it. i grew up listening to west radio and west TV, but it was not allowed to speak about it in public.
Oh wow, i can only tell of what i saw in docus or read about, so i have no actual first hand knowledge like you do. Thank you for taking the time to share this

There is barely any history more interesting than German history when it comes to ww2, cause alot has happend before the war leading up to it, during and then after the war as aftermath. And the thing about it is, that most of it happend due to some sorta pact, made by some people that arent german, impacting the regular german citizens

Till's makeup is from the cabarets of the Berlin of the roaring 20's. If you know the movie "Cabaret" then you know where his makeup is coming from (especially in the scene with the song "Welcome").
The roaring 20's had the reputation to be especially kinky and decadent with a lot of orgies, crossdressers and homosexual activities. Especially in Berlin.
The rest is a mixture of Third Reich and GDR (DDR), because both dictatorships restricted the receiving of radio waves from foreign countries with foreign ideas and foreign music.
If you were caught listening to foreign (enemy) radio stations in the Third Reich this could be your end. In the DDR you were thrown in prison and / or your life was ruined by the secret service (Stasi).
In both states the radio was the life line of the people for listening to modern western music that was forbidden in both dictatorships.
Despite of those threats the most people in the GDR watched west-TV and listened to west-radio. There was an area in the east, where no western TV and radio waves were getting to. That area was called "Tal der Ahnungslosen" (valley of the clueless) by the east Germans.
The women protesting and going over the top with bare breasts and the women turning over the car were part of the women's rights movements. Then they had written on posters and their body in the 1960's & 1970's the slogan "My body belongs to me" (part of the pro abortion movement inside the womens rights movement of the 1960's and 70's).
In the video they had written on posters and bodies "My Radio belongs to me".
In the same women's rights direction goes the scene with the complaining man (about the food) and the woman throws him to the ground.
But to be honest: I don't know, why they brought up that women's rights stuff in the context with their song about the radio. Maybe the radio helped spreading those political ideas back then, too.
The music was in big parts a homage to the sound of the band "Kraftwerk" and their songs about radio waves and the radio itself (partly integrated into songs like "Autobahn").
My recommendation:
The band "Kraftwerk" and their song "Autobahn". If possible, take one of the latest versions. If possible from one of their latest life events with the 3D animation of the German highway in the background.

PS:
"fernes Weh" means literally translated "distant pain", right. But in this case it is an unusual, artistic version of the German word "Fernweh" (Wanderlust, travel nerves, travel bug, to have itchy feet).
All those English expressions and words for Fernweh (even the imported German word Wanderlust) aren't catching the real meaning of "Fernweh". It isn't just the wish to travel somewhere. It's like a sweet (at the same time wistful) yearning and thinking about distant places.

I was born in the eastern part of Germany and now live in the western part for 16 years. And the East-West topic is still a topic in Germany - not as big as it was once, but still there are differences in each part of Germany - culturally, monetarily, economically and so on. I am impressed, that a non-German knows so much about the German history. You are phenomenal (and by the cute when grooving with the music :) )

Great reaction, but you looking at your second screen resulted in you missing so funny short scenes of this video. Like the women giving breast to a radio or the hairdresser cutting off an ear. ;)
Fun fact, the video is actually playing on my big, second screen, so i see more on the second screen than the one where my camera is on 😅 i need to rethink my setting but its also my live stream setting on twitch. But i did see the women giving breast in the video, prob just didnt mention it
An interesting twist is seen at the end of the videoa when the color comes back. The flags have the star wreath of the European Union, but the flag is not blue but red, like most communist flags.
I see this as Rammstein's personal criticism of interference in their art. Some time before they had to experience how the album "Liebe ist für alle da" was censored by the authorities. The ban was only lifted after a legal battle.

About the (at least for many Americans "controversial"… "Ahhhh… naked titties!")… breastfeeding scene:
In German breastfeeding a baby is called "Ein Baby stillen"… meaning the baby gets silent ("still" in German, like in the famous christmas tune "Stille Nacht" - "Silent Night") after crying loud to be fed.
But "stillen" also has another meaning as e.g. in the German phrase: "Seine Neugier stillen", which translates into English as "satisfying your curiosity".
So the radio on the breast of the woman to me is actually depicting the last meaning metaphorically and is not at all a shocking picture.
One more remark to the scene, when people (and in this scene you can only see women!) were protesting: one slogan on a transparent said: "Mein Radio gehört mir"… "My radio belongs to me" reflects a, in (West-)Germany very well known slogan of the early feminist movement: "Mein Bauch gehört mir", which you could translate to "My womb belongs to me", which was about the right of abortion.

The Soviets did not interfere in the cultural policy of the GDR. That's just not true. I don't want to say that I liked GDR cultural policy, but it was not Soviet policy, which since about 1960 has kept more and more out of the direct internal politics of the GDR.
Till Lindemann is a great artist, but also a great subjectivist, so to speak an egocentric. But I like him too.

In a Book by Anna Finder Stasiland, mentions in It how her Boss when she lived and worked in Germany, was originally East German and He was part of a band in DDR times, and because of censorship and having to meet State approval for the music and lyrics, they( the state) ended up banning the band , because of a song….
I like you very much because you´re thinking about this shit. You can´t imaging that people that tried to fled from the DDR got shot to deat on the border. Fishermans fished in their fisnets people who tried to fled by swimming . I´ve a very good friend from east germany and have seen people digging a tunnel from east to west germany. I recognized him as a former Boss "Proffessor Peter Lücker!"!
by the way - in this moment I don´t think very much about you (but I like you very much) I think of my friend who sits in the wheelchair and was such touch when we went to the irish Pub 2 times a week. Now he is in hospital since one years - 25 years ago I got one Flensburger-Beer - against Karl May Beer!!!!

I love that Germania in this video always wears the colors of Germany in the different time periods. She is wearing bones in shape of a tree ( tribal sign from armenius’s tribe who was the one who wiped out three Roman legions in teutebourg forest. )
She wears black and white in the early years or 20’s and then always wears red things and gold pieces with her black skin. The German flag. Black red and gold.
The red laser in each shot is “Det Rote Faden der Geschichte” red string of history.
I think the banned part of the German anthem was “Deutschland über Alles” which is Germany above everything else.
He changed it to Deutschland über Allen” which means Germany above all, but I think it’s a reference to the insane behavior of Germany during that time compared to other countries.

I played in Berlin shortly after the reunification. Met some interesting people. Like crazy, just frickin crazy. It was a weird time.

Western Music and Radio/TV-Stations were forbidden in the East, so it is like today ... what the system doesn´t like, is censored

You still see the border through Berlin, with Google earth. Orange Street lights east, and the more yellow ones west....

Rammstein are so special, they were literally prisoners of war and a product of WW2. I am the same age as them and can't begin to imagine what it must have been like for them, especially with how West Berlin was. Full of culture and life! Poor guys. Ganz so war es nicht. Ich wurde am 15.12.1954 in der DDR geboren und hatte dort auch Probleme, aber geliebt habe ich dieses Land trotz allem. Ich bin auch Musiker, Rentner und bald ein ganz anderer.
It is not entirely correct that we were not allowed to listen to western music in the GDR. There were even records of The Beatles or the Rolling Stones at the official label AMIGA. Maybe some few artists were forbidden for example DAF from Western Germany or Frankie Goes To Hollywood. But many were: I recorderd whole albums from the east German radio station DT 64. For instance Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Prince, oder The Cure in the 80s. What was not allowed: To listen to western radio stations. But we did it anyway.
I love these kinda first hand, lived the life comments. I obv wasnt born during times of the wall (i was born 5 years after the wall was taken down) so i love hearing and mostly, learning from people who actually have first hand experience

I am an East German person and have almost exclusively heard - and played - music from the West.

Listening to West German radio was not officially forbidden in the GDR, but it was not welcomed. Officials (police, army, etc.), however, had to commit themselves not to receive West German radio or TV.
There were, however, bans on individual songs or artists whose music was not allowed.
At official dance events, there was a quota that a maximum of a certain amount of Western music could be played, if I remember correctly, 40%.
Since there was hardly any international music to buy on record in the 80s, it was very common to record music from the radio on cassette. There were special radio programs for this purpose, where no one talked into the tracks and you could record the tracks in their entirety.
I still have hundreds of cassettes with recordings from that time, some of them complete programs, because at that time I recorded the programs, which mostly ran at night, automatically via a timer (and then copied out the interesting titles).

I am pretty sure that their costumes are from the 30s and while uniforms of soldiers were from after ww2 uniforms the captain was having uniform that was ww1 style. Also some shots were from French revolution (like naked girl with the flag) My guess for them is that music is eternal and with no borders. And also radios were forbidden during world war 2 like for example in French while it was occupied by Germany.

Thank you very much for your video and also for your interest in the background of the Rammstein songs. But this is not about the history after the Second World War and the division of Germany, but about the jazz scene that existed in the Nazi era. These young people at that time risked their lives to listen to their music. This can already be seen in the clothing, which dates back to the 30s and 40s of the last century.

I'm of the opinion that it can't have anything to do with East Germany because it's all about radio. If it were also about television, then no people's receiver( "Volksempfänger") would be shown here and technology from the 30s and 40s. Almost everyone in the GDR watched western television, but that was in the 70s and 80s. Here is the source of what I mean.

(My fav of all time is Donaukinder, about a sad environemental devastation that happened in 2001 if i remember correctly, there is a fanmade video on youtube with the context at the start of the video that is incredible, with real footage of that time)

Wow - I am very impressed by your knowledge of the German history as a non-German person. It's maybe more than 90% of the German's itself know about their own history. Shame on us ! Compared to the reaction stories Rammstein from US I appreciate your dedicated interpretation and analysis of this song and especially of its extremely important lyrics which no-one from US understands. They are much more important than in any other hard rock band that I can imagine. Go deeper into that eg. in the song "Du hast" . I am your fan ! Thanks a lot for that.

The song reminds me a little bit of "Ich glotz TV" (I'm staring at TV) by Nina Hagen. When Nina published this song (1978), she had already emigrated from the GDR two years earlier (1976). Not everyone had such an opportunity. Her song is more of a blanket criticism of media consumption that tempts you to not get your ass off the sofa. Her song thus follows a different intention than that of Rammstein. However, the phrase "I'm staring from east to west" also occurs in her song.

People even dug tunnels under the wall. There's a story of a group of people who dug a tunnel and placed some kind of improvised railway into it so they could drag their grandma with them because she wasn't able to crawl through it anymore just so she would be able to be free again

What? The RAF was quite happy to be able to hide in the GDR. The last RAF member to escape, Wolfgang Grams, was shot dead by police at the train station in Bad Kleinen, just 4 km from Till's father's home.
@@tosa2522 Maybe, but it was thanks to them that the movement against the wall started , even though they were part of the GDR. You even see them appear in the Deutschland video. They were adressed as terrorists, but i called them freedom fighters, just like the IRA in Ireland.
@@geerteertmans6697 In the Deutschland video, the "freedom fighters" from the RAF took Germany hostage and put an explosive belt on her.

No Fences , No borders .... as an East German I would describe it as : everybody listen to western radio stations couldn't left the country physically but could it mentally. In that time we were far away from east Germany. I grew up with Neue Deutsche Welle, Depeche Mode aso .We always watched "Tagesschau", the western German TV Main News at 8 pm.
In 27, so i wasnt born when the wall was up, or when germany was still divided, so i only go off of what i see in docus and read about. Its so weird when u think about it, cause its actually not that long ago, while we live in a completely different culture right now

Another great job Evy - love the deep dive into the meaning of the song and lyrics. Too many today do not know history and the reasons things happened in the past. It is much more important that people realize - To me the sexual images indicate how much the elite loved the music and could get to it because they were the elite, even though they were in East Germany. The holograms etc were more that the police could not stop their minds from enjoying it, or the music itself over the airwaves. Just a few thoughts. I suggest the produced official video for “Ich Will”. Has a cool story you can try to break down…. I won;t give it away.. LOL
