Hey, nice work. It's true, we used to play a lot of Roland Synths back in the days :) The Gated Choir Sound in 05:33 has to be played with CC Volume Triggers ! 127 for Note on and 0 for Note Off. Thats how you achieve that gated Sound. And you´re right. The sound, that are not 100%, are stacked with other synths. Most of the custom Synth Sounds are programmed on Olivers JD 800. I still have an external sound card for the JD 990 with the original Sounds on it. If you want, I can send you sysex files :) The JV2080 didn't exist on the 1st Album, but was used a lot on the 2nd one. The additional sound on the Hand in Hand Intro was a custom sound programmed on a Nord Lead 1. As far as I remember we never used a M1, but a Wavestation Expander. But most of the Pianos are also Roland Sounds. The Vintage Expansion Card for the Roland JD990 was used a lot. Everything else you need is an Akai Sampler, a Moog Prodigy, and a Hugh & Kettner Cream Distortion Unit.
Thank you very much for this information Jens! 🙏 Many viewers and I love this background information. Especially the sounds of Dune were really good back then and still sound brilliant today. With the gated choir, I might also have thought of a "real" gate. But you can improvise a lot via MIDI. 😅 I have a Nord Rack 1 here, maybe I'll get to work on the intro of Hand in Hand. Yes, the JV-2080 came out after your first album, but the 1080 sounds are all on it as far as I know. That's right, I wasn't sure about the piano sound, so I used the legendary M1 House Piano. But many Roland pianos sound similar, of course. I didn't know the Distortion Unit, but I'll have a look at it. 👍 If you could send me the sysex files from the sound card, that would be super cool! I've been looking for some sounds for years (especially the lead sounds from Can't Stop Raving and Rainbow to the Stars). You can find my email address in the channel info. I would be very happy! 🙂
Thank you Jens and Oliver for this GREAT sound atmosphere. My favorite is the 1st album, believe or not I listen it EVERY week minimum once the whole album. I search similar quality hardcore techno stuff but...I did not found any similar so far ;) So I decided to create similar for myself. The problem is that I always stuck on the workflow as always found my track too busy and too “popular” sounding. I bought a JV-1080 just because I saw this post some Months ago :) I’m just very curious how the workflow were looks like creating this first DUNE album. How the tracks were born, who figured out the chords, keys, what was done first the verse or the full part and after was reduced the sound and created the intro and other parts...I would LOVE just hear or see a short video or a few words about this just to inspire me how to go further. I’m very sad that nobody make and made similar cultured hc. You guys are hero for me and thanks again for Dune! Favorite tracks on my favorite album are Future is now, Spice, Generation love.
Man, I literally cried because of this video. These tracks are the reason that I started my journey of making music. I've listen these tracks over and over and wondering where the sounds came from. Many of the sounds I found over the years, but these sounds I didn't know. Thanks a million😍
I was a big fan of the early Dune tracks back in 95-97, pure nostalgia. I'm a huge nerd about finding the origin of the sounds used in these old tracks. Great vid !
Korg did a great job with that M1 VST. I feel like I end up using it in pretty much everything. It's disappointing that the 1080 VST only has the base sounds. Though if it had all the sounds, I would have paid the full $150 and I would have missed out on getting an actual 1080 for $75!!
Den Leadsound in Cant stop raving kann man wunderbar mit dem Preset D50 Organ im JV-1080 nachbauen. Als Wellenformen benutzt man D50 HeavenB & A, Syn Vox 1, Voice Aahs A ;) Welche hast du beim JD-990 benutzt?
Many sounds of them can be found many vst"s. Since this video I think you got the original sound preset files. When i tried play the I Can't Stop Raving and Rainbow to the stars songs, i used any Flute sounds with random leads. The result was good.
Hey Thank you! To me it sounds like almost only samples were used. Both for the drums and for most of the melodies. Therefore you could only recreate it very inaccurately. Here you can find one vocal sample: ruclips.net/video/jpLVyZVRw3w/видео.html And this female high voice could be sampled from here, but I didn't try it. ruclips.net/video/4vgcYBwyw28/видео.html

@@DuckTronic I have to wait until the price of 990 is going back down to a fair level..but yeah that is the next! XD Just found on 1080 a string very similar to “Generation love” from Dune
Really love this video! Can you tell me which software you used to create this video? I'm looking for a program that is able to generate these vocal instructions too.
Thanks a lot! I use Logic Pro to record and mix the audio signals. For editing I use Final Cut Pro. I generate the voice in the browser with the free Google Text to Speach tool.
@@DuckTronic Ah okay, I thought a video editing program with a build-in text-to-speech functionality was used, but I couldn't find a proper app. Now I know why :-) Thanks for explaining how you did it!
I didn't know the exact sounds of hardcore vibes until then. Now I know where the vocal sample, the drum loop, the lead melody and the bass drum come from. If I find some more, maybe I can make another video about it. 👍
Hey, thanks a lot! That is quite different. For one thing, certain instruments were used a lot back then. There weren't as many as today and certainly no plug-ins. That makes it relatively manageable. Nowadays it's impossible. Then many producers tell in interviews what they used back then or where the sounds came from. I once wrote to Jens Oettrich and he told me, for example, that the pads for "Rainbow to the Stars" came from the Music Store Sample CD. I even have it here, but I wouldn't have thought of it on my own. 🙂
In this video, Rolf Mayer Bode explains a lot about the track "Spring", which also comes from that time. Very interesting! ruclips.net/video/mh4fVC6bABs/видео.html&ab_channel=RolfMaierBode
This is so cool. Thank you. By the way. As example in the song Rainbow to the stars you can hear a quick tb303 bassline with some cool slides. Do you think this is made by sending midi notes to a 303, or is this made by the inbuild sequencer of the 303?
Many thanks! I tried to hear the patterns of "Rainbow To The Stars", but no chance. Unfortunately they are not clearly audible. On the first one you can hear the second half of the bar, but everything that comes after that you can only guess. The 303 has no MIDI. I guess they synchronised it via DIN Sync and used the internal sequencer. Maybe it's not a 303 at all and they used 303 similar preset sounds from other synthesizers.
Thanks! Here is an example of the bass drum. To get the sound exactly right you would have to know which distortion pedal was used back then. Or may be they just used a sample. ruclips.net/video/sBFa8lvIC5c/видео.html
@@DuckTronic If you saw the videoclip from hardcore vibes I would say he had a modded tr707 with some distortion on the kickdrum but it sounds like a 909 which is distorted and I think dune used also alot of korg m20 which you also see in the clip
@@freakanoizer The 707 was most likely only used as decoration in the video clip. Wonderfull video👍Gives nice hints. Although the synth-scene is completely ignoring beginners. I don't have a Roland - instead a shitty Yamaha.
