The 1080 still sounds amazingly good today for something from 1994. No other sound module from that era really comes close to the depth and realism of modern computer-based sample libraries and VSTs. Even though the technology is so simple by today's standards and there's no gigabytes of deep multi-sampling the thing just sounds so soulful and expressive.
@@jessihawkins9116 my friend i agree. Its a JV series. Its got that in your face kind of sound to it. Life❤❤❤ it fits our music status and taste for soul and kind emosions to it as well. These videos are so great because they beautifully demonstrate what these instruments can do in the hands of a fantastic musician. I would buy an album of Ujiie jamming on all the classic synths in a heart beat. Keep it up!!
I have the big brother, the JD-990, those 90s Roland expanders kick ass to most of the modern synths. They have a breathe, a soul, they seem alive when you play them.

Wow this video is amazing. The JV-1080 is my favorite synthesizer so I love this video so much. The demo is very good too, your piano skills really makes it interesting.
Still love my 2080. The quality of the presets really hides the fact that the synth engine itself is fantastic. "ROMpler" hate is silly, these were juggernauts.
Have you notice difference in sounds, 1080 vs 2080? Or 2080 is a 1080 with some improvements? Any midi issues with 2080 as people say? How are piano/organ patches? Thanks in advance!
I miss my JV1080 my first favorite piece of equipment i purchased from Roland along with the expansions cards I bought as well nothing but good vibes with this gear
It’s a great mashine for making those Well known 80’ish sounds, but people should serious think what they pay for this + serious overpriced pcm expansion cards when you can get the complete selection built in a 5080 or Integra. Both the 1080, 2080 and 5080 is not worth a whole lot of “retro” money when you can still buy a brand new Integra that has very near a “complete” 1980-2020 Roland Rompler sound collection. It’s both a curse for Roland and a Big plus for the user that Roland released the Integra that both gives the user an almost complete 40 years sound palette and shows Rolands complete lack of evolution during this period. But also shows that many of the JV sounds was already in the late 80’s a very high quality when its 90% of a 30 year later state of the art Roland sound module
@@mrdali67 Im with ya...Though still own some old keyboards (Korg/Roland/Ensoniq/yamnaha) but no way id buy a romper today,... I spend that on Vintage analog synths..... Well..the up keep! ;) But I've got a bit of a woody for the Polybrute... AMA....
My first synth was a Roland XP-30 which uses this same sound engine. I have to say it still sounds good today, no need to upgrade. I especially like the Keyboards of the 60's and 70's expansion, which I think is also compatible with this module.
Where is the difference most noticeable, all patches or just some? I dont think you can say a XV3080 doesnt feel like a real instrument as it sounds amazing.
@@maccagrabme It does sound amazing, ofcourse, but I didn't connect to it while playing. Most noticeable to me was the difference in the electric pianos (MIDIed Grand usw.) and the Strings (Orch. Could be confirmation bias ofcourse, but i think its the older lower quality converters that make it sound more raw...like the DX7 vs DX7 mk2 :)
@Xeraser ooh yes i've read about this on donsolaris page! But shouldn't the JV units too have this compression? There it says (if i remember correct) that only the JD 990 wouldn't compress...maybe thats the reason these units are getting so ridiculously overpriced on the used market (750€ and upwards in europe). But considering dynamics, nothing beats my MKS-20 ;) ...also i've never heard of these yamaha units you were talking about...whats special about them?
@Xeraser haha allright, thanks for your explanation! I owned a Motif Classic Rack - until i recently aquired a TG77 and never used the Motif so i sold it. My take on that whole yamaha vs roland thing is, that while yamaha shines with realism, Roland isn‘t bad at making very expressive sounds...so i think it comes down to what you personally value more. :)

I 100% agree! Todays modern VST's are just too soft, thin, and compressed! I wanna hear the loud, sharp, lush warm, sound of 80s and 90s synthesizers and reel to reel tape.
Iconic soundmodule, often referred to as bread-and-butter for music production, its sounds are versatile, practically useful and have overall great quality. Subarashi!
It probably is. Nintendo has used other Roland rompler sounds in N64 games. The underwater theme from Mario 64 ("Dire Dire Docks") uses the "Crystal Rhodes" preset from the JD-800 (though it is a much lower quality sampled version of it, due to the limitations of the N64 hardware).
@Xeraser Totally agree. It's a lot of fun to randomly find familiar sounds in old presets…much like listening to old music and recognizing a tiny part that was sampled many years later.
This is a classic machine. I owned & used a fully loaded one for a long time, on multiple projects. It sounded so good without doing too much tweaking. Multiple outs meant ease of use at the mixing stage too. Maybe roland will (or are) doing a boutique of this, in which case I'll get one. Thank you for uploading 👍🙏

Eric Persing is truly a sound designer genius. Thankfully I’ve got both the JV-1080 and his modern masterpiece Omnisphere.
It's in the compression of the sounds, according to Eric himself.
But still there is something simple and beautiful of the hard synths that the VSTs, incl Omni, just can’t match.
@@sebrura Right. A real conversation is always better than Skype.

Your opinion "best machine for pads" is noted.
Though IMO, 4 years before, and still a champ, the Wavestation.
The OST for Rayman was mostly created with the JV-1080. Rémi Gazel, the guy who wrote the music told me so himself when i asked him.
