Awesome job. I would change nothing but one thing....the q cel.
Swap it out for cabosil instead and do everything the same way.
Q cel is a thickener that only makes your resin heavier as it gets thicker.
Cabosil will ‘fluff’ up in volume. You were replacing foam so make the resin as big and as light as possible using cabosil.

You got it mixed up dude. Q-cell is comprised of tiny glass spheres filled with air, making it up to 6 times lighter than resin per equal volume. It's designed to fill volume without adding weight. Cabosil is designed to create thickness in the mix but it's heavier.

@@wakazuzu maybe I’m confusing qcel as aerosil which is just a thickener, the pot doesn’t get fuller, just denser. But I am sure that Cabosil is 100% micro balloons that make volume (the pot fills) without adding weight. I go through three bails of cabosil a year so I’m pretty familiar with the stuff. I have a bail aerosil, but use very little of it from year to year. Keep in mind I make boats but a surfboard is just a very little boat

@@pearsonmarine5565 You definitely have it back to front here Pearson Marine...
Cab-o-sil is a thickener that prevents dripping. Aerosil is the same but a different brand. Both are fumed silica. Fumed silica is used in the film industry when making fuel gels, including the stuff you smear on stunt guys before you set them on fire. It's also used to thicken toothpaste and cheap thick shakes from fast food joints. Toothpaste isn't light or aerated, just thick and non-drippy. When mixed with resin it creates a very strong bond great for gluing thanks to its microscopic 'branch' like structure. Use it for fin boxes and leash plugs when making surfboards.
Q-cell microspheres (PQ Corporation) and Micro Balloons (3M) aerates or 'expands' resin making it fluffier/lighter. Micro balloons are a fancier version of Q-cell as the size of the spheres are more consistent. Don't eat either of them. Also the bond isn't as strong as fumed silica as we're dealing with mini spheres here. Use it to fill gaps/dings.
Surfboards are VERY light boats in comparison which is why the difference between Cab-o-sil and Q-cell are so important.

@@topdeckdog ok, just so we are on the same page.....cabosil is a thickener....agreed. But my aerosil does not mix up like my cabosil. My bag of aerosil is heavier powder that isn’t fumed nearly as much as my cabosil so how can you say aerosil is the same as cabosil, just a different brand name? Confused.

@@pearsonmarine5565 I can say they're the same because they are both FUMED SILICA. They are different brands therefore have different properties as their manufacturing process isn't identical, as you've noticed. Microballoons and Q-cell are GLASS MICROSPHERES which is a completely different product altogether.
