Great video!! Been looking for something like this for about a week as I have an EPS board with carbon rails and didn't want to damage the carbon. So thanks, great tutorial.
If there is no underlying damage, yes. On that particular board in the video there were a number of spots that where the paint had chipped off that had no fiberglass damage underneath that we just sanded and painted.
During step 4 wet the patch are you using the two part mixture or just the resin without the hardener? Please clarify if there are points in the repair when you would only use the resin or hardener individually vs as a mixture. Thanks!
We used peel ply over the repair which allowed us to get away with not hotcoating it. Otherwise yes, after laminating the patch and it sets, put a coat of resin over it before sanding.
If I am cutting away damaged glass I am usually only cutting back to where the glass is bonded well to the foam below it. The caveat there is that sometimes the glass will lift off the foam (actually the foam separates, usually just below the glass) but isn't damaged, in that case I'll use some resin and glue it back down. The taper that I will sand to bond the new glass over the repair area usually extends around 1/2" from the edge of the damage.
Most standup paddle boards require that an epoxy resin be used. On this board we used Resin Research 2000ce, which we sell. What is commonly referred to as fiberglass resin is a polyester resin that will melt the styrofoam core and isn’t compatible with any boards that have eps or xps (styrofoam) cores. Surfboards that have polyurethane cores can be repaired with surfboard grade polyester resin.
Thanks for the video! How would the process differ for a poly board? I think I have a poly board. It's a surf paddleboard made in HI. I started sanding it and it has a strong sweet, chemical smell - I read online that's how you might tell the difference. Anyways, grateful for any additional tips.
Actually the process is more or less the same. A couple differences are that poly boards you can use polyester resin on (you can also use epoxy) but you cannot use polyester resin with epoxy (stryofoam cored boards) and most polyester boards are going to be sanded or gloss and polish finished where most epoxy boards are painted. If the board has a sanded finish or a gloss and polish finish skip the painting and finish it off like a regular surfboard ding (seal with surfboard sealer on a sanded finish, and polish on a gloss and polish finish).
Spray paint from the hardware store, usually rust oleum or krylon brand is what I use, look for one that says it will bond to plastic. The colors may not match perfectly, fanning the spray (not taping off a hard line) where you want to blend and then color sanding will help make the difference in color less noticeable.
@@FiberglassSupply do you not use a finishing coat over the paint? Most SUP boards I see have a gloss over them. is it a gloss spray paint, or is it a gloss resin coat?
@@jonnyzuma6884 I was going to ask same. I don't think hardware store spray paint is made to be watercraft paint. I think I would hotcoat over the paint, no?
The short answer is no. Because we use the peel ply we don’t need to do a fill coat however if we had not used the peel ply we may have done a fill coat. Epoxy will self surface which means it does not need a coat with a surface agent in it to cure tack free, which means you could sand the patched area if it is built up higher than the surrounding surface.
Can you guys do one with a huge hole on epoxy board! Ive seen people just put a new cut out eps foam or q cell with slow harder? What do you guys usually do? Great video
If we get one come in we’ll video it. Huge holes in eps can definitely be plugged with an eps cutout, it gets tricky if you try to fill it with putty, slow hardener is a must and it may be necessary to do in layers if doing putty.
i have like 5 inch gash through the top of board. kid ran my girlfriend over. its epoxy but on the top not the rail and much larger. any suggestions? or supplies?
about how deep and wide is the gash? If it is not too terribly wide or deep I would fill it with putty and glass over it. Is the board a polyester or epoxy board (polyester has a urethane foam core, epoxy boards tend to have styrofoam cores). Here is a video where we fixed a crushed rail with putty and glassed over it ruclips.net/video/CKvN5XO09js/видео.html and here another video showing how we made the putty ruclips.net/video/eK1vlG46XAY/видео.html

Thanks for the good info
Awesome video. Thank you. I wonder if a dent on a fiberglass boat hull would take same steps to repair it.
Essentially yes.
What fibreglass fabric was used ? Any specification?
4 or 6oz, styles 1522 and 7533 E-glass. fiberglasssupply.com/reinforcements/fiberglass-cloth/
Excellent step by step! My white coating is chipping off my old Pau Hana in spots so I think I just need to paint and blend.

what was the piece of paper you put on the fiber glass
It is a fabric called peel ply

Always as a mixture.
Great vid. What is the peace of paper to hold the resin?
That is a polyester fabric called peel ply. We sell it under our vacuum bagging materials. It is optional but does make the process a little easier.
This was great! Thanks!
Thanks!
Fiberglass Supply what is the piece of paper Called to hold the resin? Great vid although!
Hi do you ever use microbaloons when fixing an epoxy resin board?
Yes, usually 3M bubbles. If painting over it phenolics would work too.
no hotcoat neccessary?
We used peel ply over the repair which allowed us to get away with not hotcoating it. Otherwise yes, after laminating the patch and it sets, put a coat of resin over it before sanding.
@@FiberglassSupplydo you need clear coat to seal the paint? Otherwise it will scratch/chip off?
How far do you cut outside of simple 2”-3” cracks on the rails or tail before applying the resin and fiberglass?

I know I am pretty off topic but does anyone know a good site to stream newly released movies online ?
@Keanu Lance Flixportal :P
@Draven Zachariah Thanks, signed up and it seems like a nice service :D Appreciate it!!
@Keanu Lance happy to help :)
I have light surface scratches on my board what can i use to get them out ?
if its from sanding with low grit sandpaper, you can use progressively higher grit sand paper, finishing with wet n dry to get rid of those scratches
@@tomnation7408 Thanks very much
what kind of epoxy resin are you using? does fiberglass resin work?
