Okay, I think I got it. Here's my notes if helpful to anyone and feel free to let me know if I missed anything...
1 - Use 40 grit sandpaper using orbital sander and take out all loose edges pieces, keep edges beveled & rounded.
2 - Mix resin solution of 2 part Epoxy Resin (used resin research systems 2000PH Ultra & 2100F) and Micro Balloons to thicken (used this: fiberglasssource.com/collections/resin-thickeners-fillers/products/3m-microballons-1-gallon-jug)
3 - Smear resin mix into hole (do in 2 layers if a big area because it gets hot).
4 - Once resin cures, sand flat using orbital sander, sanding area beyond repair to roughen surface ( what grit?).
5 - Cut fiberglass cloth in rounded shape with about 1” overlap over filler.
6 - Brush on resin over cloth working it into cloth.
7 - Once that coat is sticky, apply 2nd coat of resin.
8 - Once cured, sand with 60 grit using orbital sander and flatten it all out.
9 - Make Sanding Resin by taking UV Laminating Resin and mixing in Waxing Agent (aka Surfacing Agent - probably this: fiberglasssource.com/products/wax-solution-surfacing-agent-2oz?_pos=2&_sid=336d9a736&_ss=r)
10 - Apply the Sanding Resin (this is called the "hot coat") extending about an inch further than patch area - not too thick and thinner on the edges.
11 - Once cured sand with 60 grit sand paper using orbital sander, then 150 grit, then 220. Each time you change grits, extend out the sanding area.
12 - Use good quality spray paint in mat finish and match color as much as possible (used MTN 94 brand paint), paint area.
13 - Once painted, cover with clear coat (used Rust-Oleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover Gloss Clear), apply 2 or 3 coats.
14 - Once dry, wet sand by hand with 320 or 400 grit wet sand paper until flat, smooth, and edges blend in with rest of board.
15 - Apply polishing compound using buffer wheel. Keep moving the buffer so it does not get too hot.
Great info!👍
Ive been binge watching repairs videos. This is hands down the best video on the tube !!!
Thanks 👍
Hey, can I possibly get a list of all the products you used to fix the board?
The DingDR in San Clemente is an artist and a real pro when it comes to repairs. He repaired a huge gash in my sup with excellent results. Even matched the original graphics on board since that is where the gash was.
Excellent!! Thanks for sharing this!! Fantastic information!!!
awesome, thanks for taking the time to post .. wish you were local to me
BOOM!!!! Love it 🥰
Great video. Any chance you can provide a materials list for the various steps? Thanks
Thanks a ton for this. Very helpful! Quick question though... did you switch to a poly resin for the hot coat, or is that still an epoxy? (I saw it is UV cure, but curious if you went poly on top of the epoxy lam or epoxy all the way.)
First off, I apologize for the late response... Anyways, epoxy is always a "hot coat". When you initially laminate your cloth with epoxy, then the second coat needs to be applied with more epoxy when the first laminating coat is tacky in order for it to fully adhere. Then once the two epoxy coats have fully cured, then the final "hot coat" is applied after sanding, using regular poly resin with surfacing agent to make it a "hot coat". This is done to prevent fisheyes. Just do it like I show in the video. It covers this.
Can you post a supply list?
Rad to see you do an "onsite" repair. What's the total time on this repair?
Yea thanks, it was a cool experience. The repair should take about three 30min sessions with about 6 hours of dry time in-between each session and the second session will require about a 1 to 2 hour wait between coats. These factors will all depend on the temperature and moisture.
hi mate, would this cloth work for composite boards? im unsure about what cloth to use on a carbon board i cracked: carbon fiber cloth or regular one like you and a lot of repair kit use. awesome vid.
Hey Joel, good question… For the most part, I would recommend using regular, 4oz cloth, and using a couple layers. You can use 6oz as well. The only time I would use actual carbon fiber to repair carbon fiber is when the area is rather large. Generally speaking, using carbon fiber on a repair smaller then say a spread out hand is unnecessary. At least regarding a paddleboard. Even in terms of aesthetics, carbon fiber patching on carbon fiber looks much worse then simply applying a shot of black paint over the area. I could talk about carbon fiber all day but I hope that’s enough info to point you in the right direction.
Great video...can you recommend where to get microballoons?
Definitely! fiberglasssource.com/collections/resin-thickeners-fillers/products/3m-microballons-1-gallon-jug
What brand are you using, and where can I purchase these products?
I'm assuming that paddle board the was repaired was an epoxy board?
Could you kitty hair fiberglass from bondo company work to patching? If not where is a good place to buy epoxy at?
Where is. The list of material ? Can't barely hear what you said
Epoxy, microbaloons, 4oz cloth and sand paper
If you still don't know what to do after watching this video then I would strongly recommend that you find someone else to fix your board for you
DingDrx thank you sr.
